A physical and biological characterization was carried out on three soil profiles characteristics of Lixiviated Red Ferralitic soils (Rhodi Eutrhic Nitisols) which had been under different tillage and managements practices (permanent ficus groves, fruits plantations older than 30year-old, and intensived cultivated soils for more than 30 years). In each soil, there were evaluated some physical (color, soil structure, soil organic mater content, dispertion soil factor, and soil bulk density), and biological determinations (total microbiota, number of endemic AMF spores, mycelial number, endophytic weight, visual density, infection percentage, and glomalin content). A close relationship between the soil degradation level with soil structure and edaphic biodiversity was observed; the highest values were recorded on the most preserved soils, but them progressively decreased with decreases in the soil degradation, as a result of an anthropic influence.
The orange, Citrus sinensis, variety 'Criolla' of Curimagua, is adapted to the climatic conditions of this area, and it normally present high relations of total soluble solids (tss), titratable acidity (tta), and the tss/tta ratio, which made it an attractive alternative to be used in plant renovation programs. Normally, the farmers have plantations of 'Criolla' and of 'Valencia'; the first without grafted and the second on rootstock 'Volkameriana' and 'Cleopatra'. So far, at the present time, there is not report of grafted orange 'Criolla' behavior. In this work we evaluated the effect of differents rootstock (Volkameriana, citrumelo Swingle, and Cleopatra) under nursery conditions, for the propagation of the variety 'Criolla', in a completelly randomized desing with three repetitions, and three plants in each experimental unit. The length of the graft, the number of leaves, and the ratio diameter of the graft/diameter rootstock (Dg/Dr), as well as the length, fresh weight and dry weight of the root, were measured. The results were analyzed using the InfoStat program (P<0.05). It was found that the 'Volkameriana' and 'Cleopatra' shown similar effect in the growth from the graft, but both of them were significantly higher than the citrumelo, which shown the lowest longitude. However, the biggest ratio Dg/Dr was observed in citrumelo. The length and fresh weight of the root were superior in the 'Volkameriana', but the highest dry weight was observed in the Volkameriana and in the citrumelo Swingle.
Field studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of Paclobutrazol (PBZ) and pruning on the growth and development of mango, Mangifera indica L. The experiments were performed in the North-central region of Venezuela, in a ecozone characterized as a Tropical Dry Forest. The experimental site was an orchard consisted of 6-9 year old mango trees belonging to the cultivars Haden, Edward, Springfels and Tommy Atkins, grafted on the 'Criollo' dwarfing rootstock, and planted 6m x 6m apart (278 pl h-1). The treatments were a combination of remotion or not of apical, prunning, and application of PBZ: 1) No pruning (control), 2) No pruning + PBZ, 3) 2 m high pruning, 4) 2 m high pruning + PBZ, 5) 2 m high pruning + lateral pruning, 6) 2 m high pruning + thinning. A factorial experiment (6 treatments x 4 cultivars) with three replication was set up in a split-plot randomized complete block design, with treatments as mai .n plot and apical bud removal as a subplot. All trees received potassium nitrate as flowering regulator. The results shown that the different pruning treatments combined with PBZ controlled the size plant, and stimulate developing of new shoots. Also the apical bud remotion, stimulated the developing of more and larger new shoots with more internodes, while no alterations were found on internodes length. Either increasing the number and size of inflorescences. Sweet-corn production in the rioverde region, San Luis Potosi, Mexico http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0002-192X2008000400005&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en In the state of San Luis Potosi Mexico, a land extent of 29022 hectares to produce maize, Zea mays L., under irrigation management are cultivated every year; from these 21 079 hectares (72.6%) are used for grain production, and 7 943 (27.4%) for sweet-corn. 99.7% of the surface used for sweet-corn is located in the Rioverde region, in communal plots of 3 hectares in average, where the corn is planted in crop rotation with chili, Capsicum annum L., tomato, Licopersicum esculentum Mill., tree tomato, Physalis philadelphica Lam., and squash, Cucurbita spp. Sweet-corn production is obtained with cultivars and traditional culture techniques; however, the productivity and profitability is lower than in other regions of the country. The objective of this work was to analyze the production system of sweet-corn and to know its limitative factors. To collect the information, farmers from the region were interviewed to summarize the cultural practices: the data was sorted and classified through multivariate analysis. The results shown that sweetcorn production system is under a process of transition from traditional to intensive. Also we found that the farmers with the best results, normally use low plant density, apply nitrogen fertilizers opportunely and adequately, and sell the harvest before or after the majority of producers.
Fourteen mudstone-formed Ultisols located in Capaz River basin (Mérida, Venezuela) were characterized. Aspects such as fine texture, acid reaction, abundance of resistant materials, and coexistence of well-crystallized clay fraction kaolinite, degraded illite through interstratified minerals under disorder arrangement, and well-crystallized vermiculite are associated with inheritance from parent rock (cretaceous and acid mudstone having undergone various transformation cycles) and moderate alteration. Ultisols development in the region of this study is mainly related to parent material of sedimentary origin, being characterized by fine texture and low deposits of unstable minerals (lutite or mudstone), independent of the bioclimatic conditions.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a biofungicide, Trichoderma harzianum, on the incidence and severity of the disease maize banded leaf caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn fungus, anamorph of Thanathephorus cucumeris, in commercial fields of corn, at the Portuguesa State, Venezuela, during the rainy season of the 2001 year. We selected commercial plots in eight locations normally affected by the disease. In each place the plots were divided in two areas, each one of about 5 ha; in each place one of the 5 ha was treated with the biofungicide, and the other one was allowed without any application. The biofungicide dose was split: at the sowing time in the seed (100 g of biofungicide /20 kg of seed), and 30 days after sowing in a dose of 3 liters of the commercial product /ha. Treated and no treated plots were sowed at the same time. We evaluated the incidence and severity of the fungus at about 70 days of the crop cycle, in 5 areas inside each plot. The incidence was analyzed using a factorial arrangement in a randomized block design with 5 replications, while the severity was analyzed using the Friedman non-parametric test. We found that the biofungicide reduced the disease in 50% in all locations. This result showed the beneficial effects of the biofungicide, and it represent a valuable, successful and environmental friendly alternative to control the disease.
The effect of native strains of associative nitrogen-fixing (NF) and phosphorus-solubilizing (PS) bacterias on the growth of maize cultivar INIA-SQ-1, was evaluated in greenhouse experiments, in an Haplusterts soil of high fertility (Soil A) and a Typic Paleustults soil of low fertility (Soil B). We evaluated eight treatments: T1: 0N + 100%P +100% K; T2: 100% N +100% P + 100%K; T3: 70% N+100% P+100% K + strain of NF; T4: 70% N +50%P +100%K + strain of NF + strain of PS; T5: 100% N + 0 P +100% K ; T6: 100% N + 50% P+100% K+ strain of PS; T7: 100% N total+ 0P+100% K + strain of PS; T8: 0N + 0P + 0K, where the percentages in each treatment represent the proportion of the nutrient recommended in each soil in accordance with its fertility. The biofertilizers doses were 50 ml/pot of NF and PS respectivelly. In the soil A the NF strain acted as an emergence promoting rizobacterial: in this soil there was 30 and 24% more germination and plants with the first true leaf at the 6 days than in the soil B. The plant high, stem diameter, leaf long and wide, root and aereal biomass showed the effectiveness of NF in both soils, and the effectiveness of PS in the soil B. The effect of NF and PS on Plant Growing Promoting Rhizobacterial (PGPR) was demonstrated in the soil B. The content of N and P in plant tisssue confirmed the results.
In order to contribute to the knowledge on the distribution of the worm, M. viatrix, of the pineapples in Trujillo State, the varieties attacked, and to determine some factors that allow its dispersion, there were settled traps with attractive based in hydrolyzed protein (a month/parcel) in pineapples farms in the agricultural municipalities of the state. Additionally, in a random way, we run out interviews to farmers, buyers, and salesmen of pineapples to know about fitosanitary issues of the fruits, destiny of the fresh product, and handling of the rejected ones. To evaluate the distribution of the worm we took into account the presence of the fly in the traps, the entrance of pineapples samples into the laboratory of INIA-Trujillo, and the information from the interviewed people. The results shown that M. viatrix is spread all over the municipalities where pineapples is cultivated (Andrés Bello, Carache, Carvajal, Miranda Motatán, Pampán, Pampanito, Rangel, Sucre, Trujillo), which are located from 50 to 1300 meters above the sea level, and attack all the varieties of pineapples (Yellow Valera, Red Valera, Joba, Capachera, Puerto Rico). Moreover we found that the truck drivers are the main way of dispersion, since they take the fresh product (Fruit) to the sales point through the different states, and we found that the residues (sobremature pineapples) normally is throw away near the sites of sale.
The potato-seed, Solanum tuberosum L., is considered a fundamental factor to guarantee high productivity and good tuber quality in the potato crop. In spite of their importance and the great number of studies on the potato crop, under tropical conditions, investigations on the mineral nutrition in potato-seed in varieties for industrial use, as much in field as in protected conditions, are scarce. The hydroponics system production, already consecrated in diverse crops, has been shown as an alternative for the production of potato pre-basic seeds, due to increases in the productivity, reduction of production costs, and elimination of contamination for soil pathogens. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of N and K interactions in nutritive solution, on the production of potato seed. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse, in the Center of Nuclear Energy in the Agriculture (CENA), University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, and we used in vitro material of the "Atlantic" variety. Five doses of N and K in a factorial arrangement (5 x 5), were established in a complete randomize block desing with three repetitions. There was positive interaction between nitrogen and potassium, which resulted in decrease of the loss of weight of tubers during the period of storage. With the combination of 12,65 and 7,03 mmol L-1 of N and cause the K the lowest percentage of dehydration.
The characterization of the root growth of maize, Zea mays L., and characteristics related to water and nutrient uptake, could be used to development management practices to promote efficient use of them, and better yields. In this work we evaluated the accumulation of root dry matter (RDM), and root length density (RLD) of maize (Hybrid INIA 68), sowed under minimum (MT) and conventional tillage (CT) in a Fluventic Haplustoll soil of Maracay, Aragua State. There were significant differences in RLD and RDM among soil layers of the same tillage type, but not between MT and CT. The RLD and RDM there were higher in the 0-10 cm layers, that in the others soil layers: 93% of the RDM was found in the 0-20 layer, and between 50 to 80% there was found under the plant. We also found that between 50.7 and 62.3% of the total RDM was accumulated during the reproductive period (60-75 days). Under MT there was significantly more DMR in the 0-5 cm layer than in the 5-10 cm layer, while under CT there were not differences. During the firsts 15 days of the crop cycle, there was horizontal root growth until 37.5 cm in NT, while for CT that position was reached at 30 days, although under CT there was faster vertical growth than under NT. At the 45-60 and 60-75 days period there was an important root length growth for CT and MT respectively, which was probably associated to higher soil water content under MT than under CT.
