The reproductive phenology, floral and pollination biology of nine species of Qualea, Ruizterania and Vochysia in the Venezuelan Guayana were characterized. The abundance of reproductive structures was estimated in each population. Floral morphology and another attributes were described, and dimensions of floral structures were quantified. Observations of the visitors during the antesis were made. A group of species produces flowers and fruits throughout the year and other species flowering and fruiting in an annual period (seasonal). All the species display diurnal antesis and floral longevity between 12 and 15 hours. The flowers of Qualea and Ruizterania are hercogamous and enantiostylous and flowers of Vochysia exhibit secondary pollen presentation. The effective pollinators are Anthophoridae and Apidae bee species. The floral attributes determine the behavior and the body zones of transport of pollen by the pollinators. The implications of enantiostily and the secondary pollen presentation are discussed. Reproductive efficiency of Pachira quinata (Jacq.)
The reproductive efficiency of clones of Pachira quinata was evaluated under cultivation conditions in the garden and seed clonal orchards at El IREL, Barrancas, State Barinas, Venezuela. Four variables of reproductive efficiency were considered: abortion of seeds, production of seeds by ovule, production of fruits by flower and the relative fecundity, which is expressed as the number of good seeds produced by ovule by inflorescence. Each one of these variables was determined for each clone and then compared according to the origin of the clones (four of Venezuelan origin and four of Central American origin). The percentage of seeds aborted by fruit shows that the impact on the total production of seed set is highly variable (1.3-29.2%), although most of the percentage values of seeds aborted by fruit were inferior to 20%,with an average value of 10.9%. The production of seeds by ovule was from 20.3 to 49.5% with an average of 33.7% seeds per ovule. The relation fruit/flower was low and varied between 7.1 and 50.0%, nevertheless, most values of fruit production were around 20%. The relative fecundity varied from 3.7 to 14.5%, averaging 6.61%. The production of fruits per flower and the relative fecundity were the only reproductive variables statistically different among clone origins. According to the results of correlation matrix,60.8% of the variance in the fecundity is explained by the production of fruits per flower. According to the information of previous studies, the results obtained in the reproductive efficiency may be associated to the genetic self incompatibility, pollinator limitation, resource limitation and the neighborhood of ramets of the same clones in the plantation.
The reproductive biology of 17 species of Melastomataceae was studied in the Gran Sabana plateau (Bolívar State, Venezuela) by means controlled crossings in the field; the pollen/ovule ratio, the allocation of floral biomass and the natural reproductive efficiency for each species and its relation with the breeding system were estimated. Agamospermy (three species (17.7%) and six (35.3%) facultatives) was the reproductive system, followed by selfcompatibility (seven species, 41.2%), and only Tococa guianensis was selfincompatible. Most of the studied species displayed high pollen/ovule ratio, which does not correspond with agamospermous reproductive systems. Floral biomass revealed that the selfincompatible species has the greater androecium/gynoecium biomass ratio, which agrees with the hypothesis of biomass allocation. Nevertheless the patterns of biomass allocation in the other reproductive systems did not show clear tendencies. Fruit production was highly variable and independent of the reproductive system; however, all selfcompatible species showed low levels of fruit production and the selfincompatible species display high fruit production. Microsporogenesis in Hymenocallis caribaea (L.) Herb.
An embryological investigation was undertaken for the first time in a member of the genus Hymenocallis, to describe the microsporogenesis in Hymenocallis caribaea. Meiosis takes place when flower buds are still inside the bulb. Microsporogenesis follows a successive type, common in monocots. The process is asynchronous between buds of the same inflorescence (undeterminate or acropetal), anthers of the same flower, and between the apex and the base of each anther (basipetal). Anthers have stomata, the tapetum is ameboid, or periplasmodial, and the endothecium doesn’t develop wall thickenings, contrary to what happens in most family representatives. Tapetum invades anther cavity early and produces pollenkit, a yellowish lipid secretion which is deposited over the mature pollen grains giving them adherent properties. When released from tetrads, microspores are uninucleate and show an undeveloped pattern of wall sculpturing. Pollen grains are monosulcate as in most monocots; the exine shows a dense sculpturing pattern at the ends and a loose reticulum at the central zone. At the time of anther dehiscence, pollen is binucleate, a condition which is considered ancestral within the angiosperms as is the presence of stomata in the anthers.
Iridaceae is an interesting plant family from the viewpoint of reproductive biology because the diverse floral structures of its species attract a gamut of different flower visitors. This work reports some reproductive aspects of five species of Iridaceae of the Salado river basin in the Argentine pampas: Cypella herbertii, Alophia lahue and three species of Sisyrinchium. C. herbertii exhibits a specialized interaction with oil-collecting bees, while the rest of the species studied had rather unspecialized visitors. For A. lahue and the species of Sisyrinchium analyzed estimations of expected mating system tend to underestimate the de-gree of autogamy found in previous experiments. Field observations verified the production of nectar in the flowers of C. herbertii and suggested that the reproductive success of this species might be pollen limited in one of the population studied. Megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis in Hymenocallis caribaea (L.) Herb.
The main objective of the present research was to characterize the processes of megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis in Hymenocallis caribaea and some characteristics of its seed development. To achieve it, there were followed the anatomical methodology suggested by Johansen (1940) for embryological purposes. Ovules of H. caribaea are bitegmic and pseudocrassinucelate. Outer integument rests undifferentiated until the postfertilization stage and it is profusely vascularized. Both integuments form a zig-zag micropile, which is considered evolutionarily primitive. Meiosis occurs while flower buds are completely immersed in the bulb. Megaspore mother cell origins directly from megasporocite. During megasporogenesis four megaspores are formed and only the one at the chalazal pole remains functional (monosporic type), giving rise to the embryo sac. Megagametogenesis follows the Polygonum pattern, with eight cells in the mature embryo sac: three micropilar cells (two sinergids and the egg cell), three chalazal cells (antipodes),and two polar nuclei in the center-side of the embryo sac. More than one embryo sac per ovule sporadically occurs, but they do not appear to lead to the formation of more than one embryo per seed. Development and differentiation of the ovule of H. caribaea to form a green, fleshy, low weight/volume, profusely vascularized seed, with a rudimentary embryo until its development is well advanced, appears to reflect an adaptation to the particular environment where these plants grow.
Due to the scant knowledge about the reproductive biology of the genus Chamaecrista (Caesalpinioideae-Leguminosae), the two herbaceous species Ch. serpens and Ch. nictitans subsp. patellaria var. paraguariensis were studied in order to produce basic information about their breeding and mating systems, considering the pollen/ovule ratio, floral biomass allocation to floral functions, atural efficiency in fruit and seed production and reproductive efficacy. The results show that both species are parcially self-compatible and partially autogamous. Nevertheless, the high polen/ovule ratio and the biomass allocation mainly to attraction and male functions showed the necessity of the visit of pollinators, which seem to be quite effective in the studied populations due to the high natural efficiency in fruit and seed production and the high reproductive efficacy showed by both species.
The diversity of floral visitors (DFV) and the frequency of visits (FV) were related to some reproductive traits, in 30 co-occurring Asteraceae species of Chaco forests from Córdoba (Argentina). DFV and FV were very different between species and Apis mellifera was the most frequent visitor of flowers. The DFV and the FV showed significant correlations: negative with flowering period and positive with the number of open flowers per plant. Results suggest that the reproductive assurance by autonomous selfing may be limited, since pollinator activity plays an important role in plant reproduction. Both, species with and without autonomous selfing, showed an increase in the number and size of the fruits produced. Reproductive phenology and regeneration capacity of two cardones, Stenocereus griseus (Haw.) Buxb. and Cereus repandus (L.) Mill.
Stenocereus griseus and Cereus repandus are two of the most abundant and widely distributed columnar cacti in the arid and semiarid regions of Venezuela. Despite their value as keystone species for wildlife and their potential economic value, information on their reproductive activity and regeneration capacities is quite limited. These aspects were evaluated in natural populations from Padre Diego, Lara State, and Paraguana Peninsula, Falcon State. These cacti have broad time windows for reproduction and considerably high fecundity levels (S. griseus: 44,225 seeds/ind, C. repandus: 322,749 seeds/ind), which confer them great advantages in terms of natural regeneration and propagation. These species depend on nurse plants for their establishment. The highest percentages of survival occurred under the shadow of trees. Under natural conditions, these species can produce half a ton of fruit pulp per hectare. Pollen tube growth and reproductive output in Acacia glomerosa Benth.
Three trees of a natural population of Acacia glomerosa were studied. The following sexual reproduction variables were measured: number of flowers by inflorescence, number of stamens per flower, number of polyads per stamen, number of pollen per polyad, number of gynoecia with viable and no viable polyads, and numbers of pollen tubes per viable polyad growing at the styles (TPP). The number of fruits per inflorescence, number of seeds per fruit and number of ovules per ovary were also measured. It was found that the pollen/ovule ratio was 3699.14, the seeds/ovule ratio was 0.81 (seed-set), and the fruits/flower ratio per head was 0.08 (fruit-set). These two last ratios show that the total of ovules that produces a plant, only 6.5% (seed-set × fruit-set × 100) becomes seeds in natural pollination. Not only the high pollen/ovule ratio, but also the low percentage of ovules that becomes seeds, are coherent with the results of the most of the allogame species. The study of the stigmas in natural pollination reveals that 35% were not pollinated, and from those which were pollinated about 39% contained no viable polyads. These results might indicate that the pollinators in the population are limited, without finding important differences among the three trees studied. The moderate sterility of the polyads or the gynoecias, are both factors limiting the fruit-set. When the stigmas receive a viable polyad, a high percentage of pollen grain fertilizes the ovules of the ovary. This increases the number of seeds in the ripe fruits (ca. 80% of the ovules of ovary becomes a seed). Outbreeding depression and reproductive biology of Nymphaea ampla (Salisb.) DC.
The reproductive biology of Nymphaea ampla was studied in a herbaceous wetland of the Oriental Coast of Maracaibo Lake, Zulia State, Venezuela. Anthesis is diurnal; flowers remain open from 8:00 until the 15:00 h during 3 to 4 continuous days. The flowers are adicogamous, anther dehiscence occurs in buds and stigmas are receptive during the first day of anthesis. The early dehiscence of anthers and visits by Apis mellifera facilitate self-pollination. The highest activity of bees occurs during the morning, between 9:30 and 11:30 h, with 14,28 visits per flower each 30 min. Pollen load deposited naturally on the stigmas was 5,72 times higher than the number of ovules per flower, and the percentage of germination was 50,23%. Natural fruit set (96,29%),seed set per ovule (98,64%),and the lowest levels of seeds abortion contributed to a high relative fecundity (89%). N. ampla has a mating system with autogamy predominance, which was correlated with a low polen/ovule ratio (195,8), low pre - (0,23) and post-cigotic (0,01) biomass allocation to male function in the flower, and a low pericarp/seed ratio (0,14). The proportion of fruit and seed set via self-fertilization was considerably higher than via outcrossing which suggests that high levels of autogamy may be associated with outbreeding depression, favouring genotypes highly adapted to water bodies where the population remains relatively isolated.
