The simulation embraces a 20 year-old horizon, considering the increment in the energy demand and the decrease in the unitary costs of the cells of fuel. The results show that the main operation variables: current density, efficiency and voltage present the typical behavior of this type of cells, while from the economic point of view, the cost of the produced electricity diminishes continually for effects of the scale economy. The use of the cells PEM to provide from energy to population’s rural Venezuelan sectors is viable in principle when contributing to the improvement of the quality of life and sustainable development of these isolated and depressed regions, those which, for its distance of the development of these isolated and depressed regions, those which, for its distance of the electric net and surface that embrace, they have not been covered by the electric net.
Corrosive differentation of SRB isolated from injection waters used in secondary crude oil recovery http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300002&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en The purpose of this study is to differentiate the corrosive aggressiveness on iron of two predominant types of Sulphate Reducing Bacteria: SRB, Desulfovibrio (D) desulfuricans and D. termitidis, found in the injection waters frequently, using measurement of open circuit potential, ohmic drop, weight loss, Tafel polarization, polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance. The attack morphology was also studied over time through optical and scaning electron microscopes, every 3 hours during 24 hours. Additionally, a comparison was made among the different electrochemical techniques applied to establish which of these is the most appropriate and reliable for evaluating MIC processes. Results obtained showed values of weight loss and corrosion rate increasing up to 9 hours, at which time they began to decrease, reaching a minimum close to 15 hours of exposure, and then increasing up to the end of the experiment at 24 hours, with D. termitidis always demonstrating greater aggressiveness, a fact corroborated by observed the attack morphology. Of the techniques used for measuring corrosion rate, it was established that weight loss and Tafel polarization reflect most appropriately the best behavior of iron exposed to a medium inoculated with sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and ferrous ions.
Biological nitrogen, COD and phenol removal in a sequencing batch reactor in synthetic chemical effluent http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300003&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) process has been shown to be efficient for the treatment of agroindustrial, chemical, and municipal effluents. The SBR accomplishes equalization, aeration, and clarification in a timed sequence in a single reactor basin. Experiments in a lab-scale SBR were conducted to demonstrate the possibility of joining biological DCO, phenol and nitrogen removal in treating synthetic chemical effluents. For this study, a lab-scale a 2,0 liter reactor was used. Operation conditions were establish to obtain highest removal rates with a well established microbial community with a suspended biomass configuration and operating under aerobic conditions, operating the system for 112 days, using an operating strategy with four combination phases fill, react, settle, draw and idle. Various organic loading rates (1,05 kg COD/m³/d. and 3,18 kg COD/m³/d) were employed. The system worked successfully obtaining removals of nitrogen, COD and phenol of 34.7%, 83.3% y 96,0% respectively, for hydraulic retention times HRT 8 h, setting: 1 h, discontinuous aeration and idle: 0.5 h.
Axial dispersion model performance a reactor of up flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) under laboratory scale http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300004&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Organic load removal on Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket UASB reactor can be affected their hydraulic variables: due to liquid upflow velocities, height, hydraulic retention time and dispersion number such affect the dispersion coefficient under reactor condition. This investigation evaluated the hydraulic performance for a 4,14 L UASB lab scale using Li+ (LiCl) and Rhodamine WT (RWT) as a tracer in order to compare the hydraulic behavior reactor and the efficiency of treatment, varying retention time and increasing liquid upflow velocities. Glucose was used as substrate for food reactor (500 mg/L) and granular sludge as inoculum (20% v/v) from a local brewery. The hydraulic performance was accessed using two tracers simultaneously with a theoretical retention time (TRT) varying from 5 to 10 hours. Liquid upflow velocities and the coefficient dispersion was large for the lower HRT (D = 1,52 E-2 m²/h> D = 5,62 E-3 m²/h) for a hydraulic efficiency (b) of 1,23 and 1,22 respectively. COD removal was lower for HRT = 5 hours (89,29%) HRT = 10h (93,85%) instead. Tracer recovery mass was 77,03% and 99,34% for the Li+ and 23.90 and 52.66% for RWT for a TRT of 10h and 5h respectively, Li+ was strong recommended. Hydraulic efficiency results was higher than one, maybe due to short circuiting and recirculation pathway, such retention of tracer delay on the sludge blanket.
Microclimatic study of the space between buildings: Case: Urban housing developments, Maracaibo (Venezuela) http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300005&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en The paper presents the results of an investigation on environmental variables that impact the space -between buildings- in urban housing developments (UHD), in Maracaibo (Venezuela). The graphic uses two rainfall indicators, one indicator representing the short-term rainfall (recent hours) and the other one the long-term rainfall (recent days), to define a critical line which separates a safe zone from a risky zone. To determine the critical line in the evaluation graphic, a historic investigation was necessary as to represent both debris-flow events occurred in the past (causing rainfalls) and extreme past rainfalls that did not cause debris flows (non-causing rainfalls). The chart is currently being used as a tool in an early warning system that has been installed to protect the town of Catia La Mar. The system is composed by rainfall stations and water level stations that transmit real time data to a control station. The data will be used to calibrate and adjust the threshold line with the purpose of improving, progressively, the debris-flow-alert prediction in the region.
Influence of basic catalysts on the decarboxylation kinetics of naphthenic acids http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300007&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Processing of high acidity oils causes corrosion problems in transfer pipelines and distillation units. In this work, the basicity of MgO has been increased by means of humid impregnation with alkaline earth metals. The influence on the decarboxylation reaction of a solution with mineral oil and naphthenic acids was evaluated. The process was carried out at 150, 200, 250 and 300°C and the reaction time was varied from 0 a 360 minutes. The increase in the basicity of the catalysts caused an increase in the decarboxylation reaction rate even if the superficial area of the catalyst was diminished by the superficial modification. The activation energy and the frequency factor of the catalyzed and non catalyzed reaction were determined by the kinetic study. The activation energy for the decarboxylation of naphthenic acids decreased in 45% with regard to the non catalyzed reaction. Finally, tests of catalytic decarboxylation were realized by using heavy oil at 300°C and 360 minutes. It was calculated a higher removal of naphthenic acids in the heavy oil than the removal found in the solution of mineral oil and naphthenic acids.
Dependability assessment by simulation of a dynamic system with different modes of ageing http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300008&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en The concept of dynamic reliability aims to take into account the interactions between the dynamic and deterministic functional behavior of the system and the stochastic dysfunctional behavior of its components. Some problems must be taken into account in the dynamic reliability: (i) the dynamic interactions between the physical parameters (usually represented by the continuous variables) and the nominal or dysfunctional behavior of the components (usually represented by the occurrence of events), (ii) the instant and the order of the events occurrence, including failures, (iii) the modes of ageing of the multiple components according to the system state. The traditional tools of the reliability can not be applied effectively to solve these problems because they assume an invariant structure in time for the system. This paper presents the reliability assessment of a dynamic system in which there are reconfigurations involving various modes of ageing for some components (changing laws, changing the parameters of laws etc.). The performance indices of the system, such as the reliability, the availability and the maintainability, are determined by Monte Carlo simulation.
Reclassification queries in a geographical data warehouse http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300009&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en A data warehouse is a specialized database designed to support decision-making and is usually modeled using a multidimensional view of data. A multidimensional model includes dimensions that are composed of levels. The levels of a dimension are organized in a hierarchy, e.g., salespersons are grouped into stores. Throughout its lifespan a member (instance) of a level can be associated with several members of a higher level of the hierarchy, e.g., the salespersons can rotate between the stores. This succession of associations enables the formulation of queries such as: “How much did a salesperson sell in his n-th season (stay) in the store X?” In this paper, we enrich this type of query, known as season queries, with spatial features. This enhancement enables the formulation of queries such as: “How much did a salesperson sell in his n-th season in a given geographic region?” (A spatial query window that contains a set of stores.) In order to facilitate their formulation, we propose and incorporate an operator into a multidimensional query language to demonstrate their feasibility of implementation.
Fractional Fourier transform of coherent optical systems application http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702010000300010&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en In 1980 Namias presented the Fourier transform of Fractional order as a generalization of the well known Fourier transform, establishing the mathematic character of this with its set of theorems and properties. Initially he used it to solve problems with the harmonic oscillator quantum mechanics. Recently, the Fourier Optics area has expanded with new contributions related to non conventional transformation, the so called fractional ones. For example, it has been proposed the applications of fractional Fourier transforms (FFT), for spatially variant filtering, characters recognition, encryption, water marks, implementation of neural networks, etc. In this work, we present a mathematic development of continuous fractional Fourier transform. It is applied to optical systems coherent to the signal processing.
