The Caiman crocodilus crocodiles is a species that has existed in nature for over 200 million years and has practically remained unchanged during this time. From the clinical pathological point of view, the morphological studies as well as the cellular dimensions are of great usefulness when describing and comparing hemograms. The aim of this investigation was to study the dimensions and morphology of blood cells. A sample of 100 animals from a wildlife reserve in Guaritico region, in the State of Apure, aged 2 to 5 years, was taken. Samples of whole blood using EDTA tubes were obtained and processed in the laboratory. Blood smears were stained with Giemsa and the morphological characteristics of each cellular group were analyzed. For measuring cell dimensions, randomly distributed holes were punched to acetate templates. Subsequently, photographs of the fields were taken and analysed using the Sigma Scan Pro 5 morphometric program. Results show the size of the different cells: erythrocytes: 12,5-19,5 µm; heterophils: 11,3-18,5 mm; eosinophils: 11,5-14,9mm; basophils: 12,7-16,0 mm; lymphocyte: 6,5- 8,9 mm; monocytes: 9,4-14,6 mm, respectively and thrombocytes 9,3-12,0 mm. The morphology of these different blood cells coincides with that described for the Alligator mississippiensis, Caiman crocodilus yacare, Caiman crocodilus lacostris, the Agrionemys horsfieldi and other reptile species.
Cryptosporidium spp. is an intracellular coccidium distributed worlwide, which is responsible for an enteric syndrome in the immunoincompetent and immunocompromised host. This investigation was conducted to study the immunosuppressing influence of methylprednisolone (MP) during the course of experimental cryptosporidiosis in albino mice. A total of eight young male albino mice were studied and alloted into two groups: Group I: four infected mice treated every other day with a oral dose of 16 mg/kg of body weight of MP given through a stomach tube for four weeks; Group II (Control Group): four infected but untreated mice. A volume of 0.1 mL of an inoculum prepared from Cryptosporidium spp., obtained from stools of a patient with enteric cryptosporidiosis was given via a stomach tube. Every week, stool samples were collected for a diagnosis of intestinal cryptosporidiosis using the Kinyoun staining. The visceral dissemination of the parasite was studied by sampling weekly one animal of each group, and obtaining necropsy samples of each organ for histopathological examination. The parasitic forms observed in tissues were as follows: oocysts, falciform sporozoites, sexual forms, free merozoites, and trophozoites. The parasitic forms that prevailed during the experiment were the free merozoites. Parasitic dissemination to trachea, thyroid gland, intestine, spleen, and lymphatic ganglion was seen. In contrast, the parasite was not observed in esophagus, liver, kidneys and lungs. In Group II, the presence of the parasite was confined to the intestines. Mice survival was 100% for both groups during the study period. The results show that the observed response of animals treated with MP was evident with the parasite dissemination in organs other than the digestive tract, effect not shown in animals from Group II. Nonetheless, the total number of parasitic forms did not show overt differences during the duration of the experiment, although it was demonstrated that a high degree of immunosupression is not required to allow for the Cryptosporidium spp. dissemination in the extraintestinal forms of this disease.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of age at first calving (AFC), some non-genetic factors, and breed group on milk production, adjusted to 244 d (P244) in the first (PL1) and second (PL2) lactations, and the first calving interval (FCI), in dual purpose cows. A total of 2471 observations for PL1, 1589 for PL2, and 1491 for FCI, from two commercial farms located in the tropical humid forest life zone, in the State of Trujillo, Venezuela, were analyzed. All the animals were grazing and received salts and minerals ad libitum, with reproductive and sanitary management, adequate to the conditions of each farm. An analysis of variance was used for the three variables studied. This included the fixed effects: Farm (F: Agrounica; Valle Verde); Year of Calving (YC: 2000-2007); Season of Calving (SC: Jan-Mar; Apr-May; Jun-Aug; Sep-Dec); Breed Group (BG: 50% Zebu, 50% European; mainly Zebu, milking crossbred); AFC (24, 30, 36, and 42 m). The following interactions were included for PL1 and PL2: FxYC; FxBG; and YCxSC. The results show that the average for PL1 and PL2 was 1430.9 and 1579.8 kg, respectively. All main effects included in the model significantly affected PL1 and PL2 (P<0.05), with the exception of AFC and SC (P>0.05). For the FCI, all the effects included in the model were statistically significant (P<0.05), except for AFC and SC (P>0.05). The dissimilarity for extreme SC was 51.4 kg in PL1, 39.2 kg in PL2, and 23.4 d for FCI, correspondingly. The difference between farms was 146.5 kg for PL1, 267.4 kg for PL2, and 16.3 d for FCI, respectively. The difference in YC was 294.0 kg 183.7 kg, and 83 d in PL1, Pl2, and FCI, in that order. Neither AFC nor FCI affected milk production in PL1 and PL2.
To determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp., an epidemiological transversal study in stray dogs from a shelter was conducted. Thirty dogs were sampled from a population of 53 animals, disregarding both age and sex. Animals with poor body condition were excluded from the study. The diagnose was made by the Micro Agglutination Test (MAT) using a battery of eight serovars (icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola, ballum, pomona, grippotyphosa, hardjo, hebdomadis, and wolfii) to challenge sera. The results of the study show that all samples analyzed were positive to microagglutination, which represents a 100% seroprevalence. All sera reacted to more than one serovar, being coagglutination more frequent to icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola and hardjo. The highest titer (1:400) corresponded to the hardjo and canicola serovar. Histology of Rat Livers Treated whit a Leaf Infusion of Fig Plant (Ficus Carica).
The liver is the major organ involved in the processes of detoxification and biotransformation of drugs and toxic substances, which can cause serious lesions. Medicinal plants have long been used as curative agents without taking into consideration their side effects to the individual. For example, infusions of Ficus carica leaves have been traditionally taken by pregnant women in an empirical way. This investigation described those liver histology of rats subjected to the ingestion of an infusion of Ficus carica leaves. A total of twenty female Sprague-Dawley (320-350 g) rats was allotted into two groups: group I or control (G I): 10 rats which received tap water for 7 d; Group II (experimental group): 10 rats which received an infusion of Ficus carica leaves for 7 d. The results showed a moderate liver congestion and collapsed hepatic sinuses in three zones of the hepatic lobule in GII. Also, cellular hyperplasia was evident (P≤0.05) in rats from the same group. The intracytoplasmic glycogen was qualitatively lesser than in GII compared to GI. Collagen and reticular fibers kept their normal distribution pattern. Although research on the possible toxic effects of Ficus carica is scarce in our region, it is mandatory to warn health professionals about the possible impact this plant could have on both pregnant women and their newborns.
