The antifungical effect of castor extracts Ricinus communis L.; sweet basil Ocimum basilicum L.; wild peppergrass Lepidium virginicum L.; garlic Allium sativum L.; neem Azadirachta indica A. Juss and fungicides benomyl (Benlate) and iprodione (Rovral) was proved on the mycelium growth in vitro of Sclerotium rolfsii and Thielaviopsis basicola. Sodium hypochlorite at 3% and distilled water were used to disinfect and to wash the vegetal parts. For the obtaining of juicy extracts, materials were macerated, the extract filtered with Whatman Nº1 paper and then sterilized with Millipore filters of 0.45 mµ. All tested extracts and fungicides showed some inhibit activity on the mycelial growth of Sclerotium rolfsii and Thielaviopsis basicola, in a papa dextrose (PD) mean, resulting in garlic a total inhibition of grow until 7 days. Benomyl and garlic reduced the grow of Thielaviopsis basicola virtually to cero during 21 days. Significant differences were found with iprodione (79%), benomyl (54.1%) and castor (8.3%) in relation to the witness. The number of sclerotium was lower in treatments with garlic, neem and benomyl compare to the witness (27.6, 49.3, 68.3 sclerotium vs 143.5 sclerotium). According to these results garlic might be considered as an alternative to be used in a handle strategy of these fungi.
To establish a survey and forecast program for black sigatoka disease in Musa AAB cv Harton plantain stablished on growing in small production system. The severity average index (SAI), youngest spotted leaf position (YSLP), foliar emission (FE), daily precipitation (PP), relative humidity (RH), evaporation (EVA), maximun and minimun temperature (Tmax and Tmin), cloudiness (CL), insolation and radiation were determined every 2 weeks. The averages per month for some of these climatic variables were: PP 143.5 mm; Tmax 29°C; Tmin 21°C and RH 78.5%. The SAI was correlated to the climatic variables during 8-consecutive weeks, previous to evaluate the disease severity. The variable with the best correlated coeficients were analized by using multiple regression method. The higher values of SAI were observed in January 1.31; May 1.14; September 1.32; October 1.20 and December 1.21 during this study. The YSLP average was 5.38 with a maximun of 6.88 and minimum of 4.40; while the SAI average was 1.13 with a minimum of 0.64 and a maximum of 1.32. A negative correlation were observed between SAI and YSLP (r = - 0.7132), and between SAI and FE (r = - 0.2556). The disease behavior is 33,32% explained by the following equation: SAI = 3.7241** - 0.0047**CL 0.0015**Tmin + 2.019**RH 0.0051**EVA, according to acumulated values during 6-consecutive weeks previous to the last week of SAI observation. Intraplant distribution of immatures lifestages of Antichloris viridis Druce, 1884 (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) on plantain (Musa AAB, sub group plantain, cv.
The intraplant vertical distribution of the Antichloris viridis, was determined at Francisco Javier Pulgar and Colón counties, Zulia state, Venezuela, in two commercial plantain plantations. According to the number of leaves and physiological stage of the plant were determinated the stages of development growth of the plants (GD) in six growth stages. It was determined the % of defoliation and the numbers of eggs, small, median, large larvae and pupae per leaf. Each plant was divided into 3 stratums: upper, middle and lower. The greatest numbers of A. viridis inmatures were found on GD4 y GD5 plants (P<0.05) in la Providencia orchard, and GD4 in El Manantial orchard. Values > or = 10% of defoliation in GD3 and GD4 were observed in both orchards. Significantly higher defoliation was found in the presence of 5 or more larvae in the Providencia orchard and <=2 in El Manantial. Regarding the distribution within plants of A. viridis stages, the largest number of immature stages was found on the middle stratum GD4. These data suggest that monitoring for immature stages of A. viridis could be best accomplished by examining the middle stratum of plants on GD4.
With the purpose of characterizing agronomic behaviour, yield components and their correlations with yield for six genotypes of Vigna identified as JA-01-00-02, JA-01-00-05, MEM-02-00-19, AM-02-00-016 and MS-01-00-09, and a commercial variety, `Tuy', experiments were conducted in Saman Mocho, Carabobo State and Maracay, Aragua state, during the period November 2001 to February 2002. The experimental design used was a randomized block with three replications. In this paper, genotypes are briefly described, plant height is measured at five phenological stages during growth cycle, and yield and its components are evaluated at harvest. For both sites, MEM-02-00-19 had the tallest plants due to its indeterminate climbing growth habit. Results of the variance analysis and Duncan´s Multiple Range Test indicated significant differences for yield in Maracay. Treatments with highest yields, belonging to the species Vigna unguiculata, were MS-01-00-09 (2114.1 kg/ha) and JA-01-00-05 (1605.6 kg/ha). MS-01-00-09 (Vigna unguiculata) also had longest pods (14.2 cm) and greatest number of seeds per pod (10.9 seeds/pod). The genetic material belonging to the species Vigna umbellata, MEM-02-00-19, exhibited the greatest number of pods per plant (17.5 pods/plant). Yield was positively correlated with pod length and number of seeds per pod. Because of differences in growth habits, genotypes belonging to species Vigna unguiculata (JA-01-00-02, JA-01-00-05 and MS-01-00-09) and species Vigna radiata (AM-02-00-016) were easier to handle in field conditions than Vigna umbellata, which had a climbing behaviour and is better suited for mixed cropping systems.
To determine the time of initial infection by Dothiorella sp. (Teleomorph: Botryosphaeria dothidea) in guava (Psidium guajava L.) fruits and the onset of disease symptoms, a field trial was installed three times (between December 1999 and July 2000). During 16 weeks, the following treatments were established weekly: 40 fruits covered and inoculated (FCI) with 3 mL/fruit of a conidia suspension, 40 fruits non covered and non artificially inoculated (FSCSI), and 40 fruits covered and non inoculated (FCSI), the latter one used as a treatment control. Seven days after inoculation, 20 fruits from each treatment were taken to the laboratory, disinfected, the pericarp cut in small segments, planted in agar V8-Juice and incubated for one month. The remaining 20 fruits of each treatment were left on the plants until the end of the trial, to observe the onset of disease symptoms. Significant differences (P<0,01), with regard to infection, were found among treatments and fruit age. Initial infection was observed at week 7 of fruit age, with 2.39% for FCI, and 19.05% for FSCSI. Infection increased progressively up to 100% (FCI) and 42.46% (FSCSI) in week 10. A low infection throughout the trial period (4.7 to 7.2%) was obtained in the control treatment (FCSI), due to contamination inside bags. First symptoms were observed in week 11, in treatment FCI (20%), and in week12, in FSCSI (15%) and FCSI (5%), increasing in the following weeks. Results show the critical stages in fruit and fungal development, which should be taken into account for disease prevention.
This work was conducted at Páramo Negro in order to characterize its soils and evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization over the pineapple production. Texture, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, organic matter, electric conductivity, aluminum and cation exchange capacity determinations were done to seventeen soil samples, coming from the seventeen production units in the area; multivariable analysis was used. Two 42 m² plots located at two different farms were selected, and three different nitrogen doses (100, 200, 300 kg.ha-1) were applied, another plot was control treatment (0 kg.ha-1). A random block design was used for analysis of yield. Results indicate that Páramo Negro soils are medium in natural fertility, with low pH and high aluminum content. Significant differences (P<0.05) among treatments were found; increments on the production on fruits of 6520, 15827 and 10247 kg.ha-1in yield were obtained compared with the control treatment. It is concluded that pineapple fruit production could be incremented with nitrogen application doses at 200 kg.ha-1.
To establish the appropriate conditions of fermentation it is necessary to know the factors that influence on this, in such a sense it is of supreme importance to define the physical parameters that you/they reveal with more precision the particularities associated to the quality of the cocoa Porcelana. The index of more fermentation was obtained in square fermentadores (65,4%) and for the interaction (AMxFR) the best combination is endurance five with removals every 24 hours at the 96 hours of initiate the process. Finally the results allow to conclude that both variables obtain their maxima values in square fermentadores, endurance zero, removals every 24 hours and 72 hours of fermentation for temperature and 96 for the index of fermentation.
An experiment was established to determine the performance of 20sugarcane (Saccharum spp., hybrid) clones (17 experimental and 3 commercial checks) to Smut disease (Ustilago scitaminea, Sydow). An artificial inoculation method was used by immersing 1-bud cuttings in a suspension of spores for 20 min. Sixty buds per cultivar were inoculated then planted in pots. After a month, sugarcane plants were transplanted into the field using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The evaluations were made every two weeks during plant crop and ratoon cycles. The percentage of stool infection was measured to determine the sugarcane reaction to the disease, according to a scale established by the Sugarcane Breeding Program at `Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrícolas (INIA).' During both cycles, ten varieties reacted from moderately resistance to resistance, and the other ten ranged from susceptible to highly susceptible. The V91-4, V91-7, V91-11 and V91-14 varieties were eliminated from the program due to their extremely susceptibility to this disease. The V91-8, V91-9, V91-13 and V98-76 clones resulted susceptible, however, it is recommended to evaluate them for another cycle to give the pertinent recommendations. On the other hand, V91-1, V91-2, V91-3, V91-5, V91-6, V91-10, V91-12, V91-13, V91-15 and V91-16 showed moderately resistance to resistance.
In order to compare the fertilizer location form through the mother's pseudostem after harvesting with soil fertilizer application, from 1998 to 2000 an experiment was carried out in Francisco Javier Pulgar municipality, Zulia state. To this effect were used three kinds of fertilizers (urea, potassium chloride and urea-potassium chloride combination), placed at three height levels, two in the mother plant after harvesting (at 0.75 m and at 1 m tall) and another on the soil. An additional treatment was included; it was based on the farm's fertilization. The statistical design was a 3²+1 factorial arrangement in randomized blocks with four replications and ten treatments. The highest values, both for the growing, production as well as for the relative economic index (REI), were obtained with the application of urea-potassium chloride combination in the mother's pseudostem at 0.75 m tall (T7). For the production variable bunch weight, the maximum value was 15.23 kg similar to the values obtained with the application of the combination at 1 m tall in the mother's pseudostem (T8) and the application of 150 gr of potassium chloride in the mother's pseudostem at 0.75 m tall (T4). In the same way this treatment produced the highest value of the REI (2,185.22 Bs plant-1). These results allow recommending this fertilizer practice to plantain producers, in order to get a better fertilizer efficiency use for the plant.
