In fact, several studies suggested an association of body fat distribution with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc. On the other hand, psychotropic medications have come to play an increasingly central role in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and many patients consuming psychotropic drugs as medication tend to become obese and they are sensitive to the diseases mentioned above. In addition, it has been associated that a healthy and equilibrated food intake could help to prevent diseases. In this review we will address the effects of psychotropic medication intake and how this relates to obesity, risk of cardiovascular diseases of patients who suffer from severe mental illnesses. It will also evaluate the potential use of healthy diets and exercise to improve the well being of the patient.
With the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in 1981, the frequency of the opportunistic infections in the immunosuppressed patients, especially the infected ones by the HIV, it has experienced a notable increase. Inside these there are those of micotic aetiology, which present a high grade of mortality, if they are not diagnosed and treated on time. In our country with the instauration of the highly effective antirretroviral therapy since the year 2001, a significant reduction has been seen in the morbidity and the mortality of the opportunistic infections, specialle those caused by fungus, in this type of patients. In the present study the positividad was analyzed in the mycological diagnosis realized by conventional methods of the different clinical samples received in the National Laboratory of Reference of Mycology, from patients infected with HIV/aids during the period between January 2005 and December 2009. Of a whole of 1173 biological samples processed only 324 turned out positive, for 27, 6 % of positivity, being the oropharingeal candidiasis and the cryptococcal meningoencefalitis, those of major incidence observed. In the clinical samples analyzed, a concordance of 56,2 % was obtained in the positividad of the samples studied by means of direct examination and mycologycal cultures, which confirms the importance of direct preparations of clinical samples for the visualization of fungal elements from clinical samples.
Meningoencephalitis due to opportunistic germs has an important place among the neurological diseases in AIDS patient. Treponema pallidum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (bacteria), Cryptococcus neoformans (fungi), Toxoplasma gondii (protozoa), and Papovirus JC (virus) are the most frequently germs found in each group. Likewise, in immunodepressed patients in general and in HIV/AIDS patients in particular, mixed infections have been frequently found, basically as a consequence of the patient’s deteriorated immunological barrier. Tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of presentation of the extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Its unspecific symptoms, the delay in the etiological diagnosis, and the severe neurological sequelae that can appear in this specific type of patient make of this disease an important health problem, in both developed and developing countries. This study describes the "first case" of meningitis and disseminated infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a Cuban patient infected by the human immunodeficiency virus.
