The aim was to show the relationship between serum retinol level, Conjunctival Impression Cytology (CIC), anthropometric status, and morbidity in low income school children. 445 children (both genders) between 4 and 13 years old were assessed. Serum retinol levels (HPLC-r), Creactive protein (nefelometry) and CIC (ICEPO), anthropometric indicators (Weight-height (WH), height-age (HA) according to national references values), morbidity (diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, measles, and parasitosis) two months prior to the evaluation, were determined. The poverty was 92.3%, wasting (WH ≤ p10) 7%, overweight (WH > p90) 10.8%, and stunting (HA = p3) 1.5%. 18% had one or more diarrhea episodes, 39.8% upper respiratory tract infections, 28.1% lower respiratory tract infections, and 32.8% intestinal parasitosis; 10.3% showed a high level of C-reactive protein (CRP > 10mg/L). The average retinol level was 35.7 ± 9.2μg/dL, with 0.7% low level (< 20μg/dL), 27.4% of the children at risk of vitamin A deficiency (20-30μg/dL), and 9.5% deficient according CIC. There was a significant correlation between serum retinol and CIC, and a significant association between serum retinol and upper respiratory tract infections, but not between morbidity and CIC. There was not a significant association between anthropometric indicators and vitamin A status and morbidity. In this study it was not possible to demonstrate the relationship between vitamin A status and diarrhea, measles, lower respiratory tract infections and parasitosis but the high prevalence of marginal serum retinol levels and morbidity in this group makes it susceptible to nutritional surveillance. An Venez Nutr 2008;21 (1): 14-19.
Lead is a versatile metal used since prehistoric times and has been distributed widely in the environment becoming a risk factor for human exposure. The present analytical-ecological study was performed in a sample size with a confidence of 95% and a maximal error of 10%; 60 children between 4 and 9 years of age belonging to Michelena sector in Valencia District in 2004. The objective was to relate blood level values to nutritional and socioeconomic status. Blood levels, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit values were determined and nutritional evaluation was performed. Mean Blood Lead in boys (11.1±3.1 μg/dL) was significantly higher in boys with regard to girls at a p<- 0.05 than in girls ( 9.5±2.7 μg/dL).Mean Blood Lead was 10.5±3 μg/dL. Girls showed a higher % of low nutritional status. Also in stratum IV, the highest prevalence was found. Hemoglobin and Hematocrit values were inside permissible limits. and levels of Lead were found at a non-critical level. It is suggested that activities of primary prevention should be carried out to diminish the levels of Blood Lead observed in children. An Venez Nutr 2008;21 (1): 20-24.
Oxidative modifications of lipoproteins of the plasma play a causal and important role in the beginning and progression of the atherosclerosis. Studies in vitro indicate that the speed and extension of the oxidation of LDL and HDL are influenced by its fatty acid composition. In the present study the effect of the consumption for 60 days of a diet purified containing 10 % of either palm, sunflower or fish oil were evaluated on the susceptibility to in vitro oxidation of LDL + HDL lipoproteins from the plasma of male Sprague Dawley rats. For this evaluation we performed two methods: determination of reactive substances with tiobarbituric acid (SRTBA) proposed for Kosugi et al, and the peroxides as described by Al -Saadani. It was found, by both methods, that a statistically significant difference (p<0, 05) existed between the susceptibility to oxidation of LDL and HDL fractions for the three dietary groups. The greatest degree of oxidation was observed for the group supplemented with fish oil followed by groups of sunflower and palm. This suggests that the incorporation of monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic) in the diet instead of polyunsaturated protects the oxidative modification of LDL and HDL by reducing the concentration of PUFA available for peroxidation.
