To detected alterations in the productive ecosystem of the Castillero Lagoon (Caicara of the Orinoco, Cedeño Municipality, Bolivar State, Venezuela), results are presented for granulometric measurements and heavy metals concentrations: Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb and Co made in June 2001 on superface sediments and of the muscular tissue of several native species of fish (Plasgiosium squamossimos, Pigocentrus cariba, Pheudoplastyloma fasciatum, and Hypostomus spp. By using atomic absorption spectrophotometry with an air-acetylene flame, it was determined that the highest concentrations of metals are represented by manganese, zinc and lead. It was determined that the highest concentrations of metals are represented by manganese, zinc and lead. In the most internal part in the lagoon the type of predominant sediments is the mud, constituting among 30% and 65% of the material collected by station. Is that those levels fall toward the mouth of the lagoon, product of the interaction of the flow / reflux currents that washes the sediment and that is reflected in the biggest presence of fine sand. The statistical analysis of ANOVA shows significant differences among the concentrations of the metals in the stations, tipificated for the presence of different averages. The averages levels for the superficial sediments of the area are the following ones: Fe (3365.44 ± 261.61), Mn (132.17 ± 25.46), Zn (253.04 ± 86.48), Pb (17.02 ± 2.21) y Co (4.65 ± 0.76) µg/g. In similarly way, in the muscular tissue of the fish the following concentrations were quantified: Fe between (31.26 ± 0.06) and (68.36 ± 0.05); Mn between (2.02 ± 0.05) and (4.16 ± 0.03); Zn between (19.09 ± 0.01) and (28.89 ± 0.01); Pb between (0.38 ± 0.01) and (0.47 ± 0.03) µg/g. The analysis reflects a remarkable association between the high securities of concentrations of metals and the sediments type, with a growing gradient toward the sediments type mud. These are alarming values in concentration of Pb and Zn, attributed to the stress that produces the anthropogenic activities surrounding the Lagoon of Castillero. It can be concluded that based on the diagnosis that the ecosystem of the lagoon is in evident state of deterioration with implications that could affect the species inhabit, and the economic activities of the population that exploit the resources biotiques of that body of water.
Taura syndrome virus considerably affects the cultures of peneid shrimp causing elevated mortalities, reflected on the decrease of the production and the increase the operational costs. This work describes the clinical signs of an infection with Taura Syndrome Virus on cultivated Litopenaeus vannamei in farms located in Western Venezuela. Shrimp samples with very conspicuous clinical signs and those that had overcome the illness were taken from affected farms. The effects of TSV were observed in juvenile, subadults and adult shrimp. The farms located off the coast of Maracaibo Lake were the most affected. The acute and chronic cases showed typical spheroids in the lymphoid organ. The RT-PCR analysis confirmed that the clinical signs shown by the affected shrimp were due to infection by the Taura virus.
There are a great number of evidences about the usefulness of analgesic drug administration before the surgery (preventive analgesia) in animals. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of flunixin meglumine (FM) administered before the surgery upon the perioperative signs of pain in bitches that underwent ovariohisterectomy (OVH). The signs and levels of pain were measured using the scale of the University of Melbourne. Two groups were used, the experimental group which was treated with FM and control group. The experimental group showed median values lower than the control group, which indicated less level of pain during the trans-operative period and immediately after surgery. According to total values of the scale, animals in experimental group showed light to moderated levels of pain, whereas light to severe pain levels were found in control. Also in control group, the heart frequency increased during the trans-operative period (116.87 ± 29.61 beat/min) and immediately after surgery (133.94 ± 29.82 beat/min), when they were compared with the pre-operative period (98.3 ± 21.0 beat/min); in contrast, animals in the experimental group did not show heart frequency increment. These results suggest that the use of FM in preventive analgesia during OVH reduces the level of pain in bitches and it may improve the analgesia during the perioperative period. Detection of the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Subunit-1 (NMDAR-1) in the Hypothalamus of the Sheep by Western Blot Analysis. http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592008000200005&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Los aminoácidos excitatorios (AAEs), L-glutamato y aspartato, son considerados las principales sustancias endógenas neuroactivas involucradas en la transmisión excitatoria.
The excitatory amino acids (EAAs), L-glutamate and aspartate, are considered the major endogenous neuroactive substances involved in excitatory neurotransmission. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is one of the main excitatory amino acid receptors. Exogenous activation of the NMDAR results in the release of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and subsequent release of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary. The present study had two aims: to standardize the optimal amount of total protein required to identify the NMDAR subtype-1 (NMDAR-1) in the hypothalamus of the sheep; to determine whether a difference exists in the distribution of NMDAR-1 in different hypothalamic regions (dorsal-rostral, ventral-rostral, dorsal-caudal, and ventral-caudal quadrant) in male sheep. The optimal amount of total hypothalamic protein required to visualize the NMDAR-1 was 100 µg. There was an effect of quadrant on the expression of NMDAR-1 in the hypothalamus of the intact male sheep. In particular, dorsal-rostral quadrant (31.5567 optical density ± 13.0831) expressed more receptor than ventral-caudal quadrant (17.1517 optical density ± 13.0831; P<0.05) and ventral-rostral quadrant (16.4683 optical density ± 13.0831; P<0.05). These data suggest that NMDAR is more expressed in the rostral area of the hypothalamus, where the cell bodies and axons of the GnRH neurons are localized. Thus, these data allow suggest that glutamatergic pathway potentially is involved in modulating the reproductive activity in the ovine. Evaluation of varied dietary crude protein and lysine level at 5.7% of crude protein on productive parameters in broiler chikens. http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592008000200006&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of 1-18 d broiler chickens to dietary crude protein (CP) levels from 170 to 250 g CP/kg diet and the dietary lysine level formulated at 5.7% of CP level. Thus, the dietary lysine level of diets increased as CP increased. Body weight gain of chicks was affected at ages from 1 to 18 days by the CP and lysine levels. Birds fed the most protein diets at ages from 0 to 7 and 7 to 14 days were heaviest (P<0.05) for dietary CP of 25 vs 19 and 17%. Increased body weight gain (0-18 d) (P<0.05) was found with increasing dietary CP from 210 to 250 g CP/kg diet compared to lower CP levels. Dietary treatments had no effect on daily feed intake (g/b/d) when CP levels were 190 to 250 g CP/kg diet (P>0.05). There was a reduced feed intake with dietary CP at 170 g CP/kg diet (P<0.05). As dietary crude protein increased there was an increase of about 31% in carcass nitrogen deposition (mg/b/d) when chicks were fed diets from 210 to 250 g CP/kg diet compared to the lower CP diets (P<0.05). A decrease in carcass fat deposition (g/b/d) was found as dietary CP increased from 170 to 250 g CP/kg diet. This study indicates that if lysine to CP ratio is kept constant at 5.7%, maximal productive performance of broiler chickens to 18 days can be achieved among 21 and 25% CP. Choosing among diets will depend mainly on cost of the dietary protein.
The objective was to evaluate the goodness of fit of 16 equations to estimate lactation curves of six cattle genotypes. Monthly or weekly milk production records of Brown Swiss (n=826 lactations), Bos indicus (BI, n=52), ¾BI¼Bos taurus (BT, n=507), ½BI½BT (n=462), BIBT (n=167) and ¼BI¾BT (n=62) cows were analyzed. Fitting of equations to individual lactations was performed by linear or non-linear regression. The residual mean squares obtained after fitting of the equations were ranked within genotype and compared by Friedman’s test. Additional criteria to compare the equations were the proportion of cases of abnormal daily milk production, and cases with positive autocorrelation. Equations differed (P<0.05) on their suitability to properly describe lactation curves across genotypes. However, for all genotypes the equation of best fit (P<0.05) was a reparameterization of Wood’s equation in which the first test date is considered as time zero. The use of this equation is recommended to fit lactation curves of cattle genotypes such as the ones evaluated in this study.
The objective of this study was to describe the growth until weaning of crossbred calves in a dual-purpose system in the Mexican tropics. The calves were ¾ European (Holstein, Simmental, Brown Swiss) ¼ Zebu, equal than their mothers. The calves help to the let down of milk during milking and drunk the residual milk for 30 minutes (restricted suckling) and were maintained in a Star grass (Cynodon plestostachyus) paddocks having access to an energetic-proteical supplement (1 kg/calf/day). Animals were weighed at birth, and thereafter every 28 days. Data on 361 (190 males and 171 females) calves (4.678 weights) were analyzed through out linear and quadratic regressions. The determination coefficients were similar for male and female calves. The model that included the linear and quadratic effects described better the data, than the linear model. T A: Control.
The objective of this study was measure the effect of using nutritional high quality protein and its interaction with recombinant growth hormone over the ovulatory response and embryo viability in hair ewes. Twelve adult multiparous Pelibuey ewes were used and randomly submitted to two different treatments. In treatment A (T A, Control group), the ewes received a superovulation treatment without the application of recombinant growth hormone (rbST) in treatment B (T B), the ewes received the same superovulation treatment with the addition of 100 mg of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST). The induction and synchronization of the estrous cycle was realized by the insertion of vaginal sponges impregnated with 40 mg of FGA during 14 days, with sponge change at the seventh day. To induce the superovulation follicle stimulating ovine hormone (oFSH) was used in decreasing doses levels (every 12 h) starting 72 h before the sponges withdrawal. In the first application 2 mL of prostaglandin PGF2a were additionally applied. The application of 100 mg of rbST was done during the eighth administration of oFSH. The ewes were inseminated 56 ± 1 h after the sponge withdrawal with refrigerated semen (108 sperm/ straw). The embryos were collected 5 days after the insemination and the embryo viability was measured by morphological evaluation. An increase was observed in all the variables evaluated in the rbST group: corporea lutea (89 vs 119), corporea lutea considered (77 vs 117), embryos recovered (64 vs 78), viable embryos (35 vs 64), and viable embryos by ewe (5.8 vs 10.6), with statistical significance, considered ovulation rate (86.52% vs 96.64%) and embryo viability rate (54.69% vs 82.05%) (P<0.01), this is probably due to the effect of rbST over the growing insuline factors that control the follicular esteroidogenesis. The rbST application before the ovulation influence the maturation of higher amount of follicles and increase the quantity and viability of the embryos obtained.
The effect of fibre particle size on apparent digestibility, ingestive behaviour and microbial-N supply was investigated. Six Bos indicus x B. taurus cows (450 ± 60.7 kg LW) fitted with ruminal canulas were used in a 2 x 2 cross-over design. The diet was made of 40% roughage and 60% concentrate. The difference amongst them was the particle size of hay (36 g CP/kg DM) which was reduced to 3 mm (small particle) and 25 mm (large particle). Diets had 150g CP and 9.3 MJ /kg DM. Apparent digestibility of DM, OM and CP and N balance were measured. Saliva production was estimated via bolus collection at the rumen. PEG was used to measure rumen liquid kinetics. Microbial-N supply was assessed with the urinary purine derivatives technique. No effects were found due to particle size on DM, OM, CP and Microbial-N supply (P>0.05). Large particle size caused and increase on the time devoted for rumia (233 vs 159 min/d) and saliva production (74.17 vs 55.77 L/d) (P<0.05). However, liquid outflow rate and rumen turnover rate were not affected (P>0.05). It was concluded that fiber particle size can increase time devoted to rumia. However, apparent DM, OM and CP digestibility, as well as microbial-N supply are not affected.
An experiment was carried out in order to evaluated the DM ruminal degradability parameters (a, b, a+b and c), 48 hours degradation of DM, CP and NDF and CP intestinal digestibility in matures sheep of Enterolobium contortisilicum, Lysiloma latisiliquum, Moringa oleifera, Morus alba, Schizolobium excelsum and Trichantera gigantea at Trujillo State, Venezuela. All forages showed substantial differences regarding proximal composition (P<0.05); while L. latisiliquum and S. excelsum showed the highest polyphenolic compounds level. E. contortisilicum exhibited superior DM degradation (a: 31.1%) and M. alba showed considerable degradable fraction and degradation potential (b: 71.2% and a+b: 92.8%, respectively). The forages degradation rate not showed significant differences to each other (P>0.05). M. alba showed the highest 48 hours DM degradability (86.5%), CP (84.4%) and NDF (73.5%) and E. contortisilicum and M. oleifera a superior posruminal protein digestibility (39.0 y 37.8%, respectively). Based on their chemical compositions, the evaluated feed with higher potential to be used for fed ruminants are: E. contortisilicum, M. oleifera, M. alba and T. gigantea. Its speculated that the lowest nutritive value of L. latisiliquum and S. excelsum for feeding ovines perhaps is due to the presence of polyphenolic compounds.
The indicator microorganisms present in the food notify on the inadequate manipulation of the commodity or the food, the presence of a hazard for the consumer or a processes deficiency. These indicator microorganisms are important tools to develop historic microbiologic records, from which own values of compassable reference with the methodology of work developed in each business can be established. These values will permit, besides, to implement the systems that guarantee the food safety, as is the case of the Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP). The objective of this work was to study the main hygiene indicator microorganisms in raw milk as tool to evaluate the sanitary conditions in the primary production, in such a way that they permit to devise a diagnosis of the initial situation like prior step to the implementation of a HACCP system. For the study, and to way of pilot experience, raw milk originating from a producing establishment of the Santa Fe Province, Argentina, was utilized. The samples were collected directly from the udder, after the first cooling, bulk tank, milker hands, teat cup and water employed in the dairy farm. One sampling was carried out for week until completing 44 samplings distributed along the year. The indicator microorganisms studied were: psychrotrophic count, mesophilic count, thermoduric, molds and yeasts, coliforms and Staphylococcus aureus. It was determined, besides, the presence of sulphite-reducting clostridia and Salmonella spp. The correlation analysis among the indicator microorganisms did not permit to establish predictions on the behavior of a microbe group based on the behavior of another. Nevertheless, the information that each one of the indicator microorganisms turned out to be adequate to evaluate the sanitary conditions in the milk primary production and to generate records that will be useful for the HACCP system implementation.
The aim of the study was to determine and compare total, reactive, digestible and digestible reactive lysine contents in pelletized (PF) and extruded fishmeal (EF), the latest as an indicator of available lysine, which could be affected by prolonged storage or inadequate thermal processing. Twenty nine Sprague-Dawley male rats with an average initial weight of 100 ± 5 g divided into three groups were used, which were individually allocated under control conditions. Nine rats were fed with a diet based in enzymically hydrolyzed casein to determine endogenous ileal aminoacid flow. The another twenty rats were divided into two groups of ten rats and were fed with PF and EF base diets containing chromic oxide as indigestible marker for sixteen days. The rats were sacrificed to remove 20 cm of the terminal ileum. In PF and PE, diets and ileal digests, chromic oxide was determined by atomic absorption, total and reactive lysine after reaction of these materials with O-methylisourea to form homoarginine by high pressure liquid chromatography. True reactive lysine digestibility was determined after correcting for endogenous lysine loss at the terminal ileum of rats fed an enzyme hydrolyzed casein-based diet, followed by ultrafiltration of the digest (10,000 Da). Total and reactive lysine contents for PF and EF were 5.7 and 5.5%; 5.1 and 4.4% respectively. Digestible lysine and digestible reactive lysine were 5.5 and 5.1%; 4.5 and 3.8% respectively. Digestible lysine overestimates lysine contents in 22.2% for PF and 34.2% for EF. Digestible reactive lysine value for PF was similar to available lysine values reported in literature of 4.2 and 4.3%. Digestible reactive lysine could be considered as a good indicator of lysine availability.
