Because of the results of the microscopic study, it was determined that the dolphin presented a systemic infection, because of a primary infection by Herpesvirus spp., related with a secondary infection by Cryptosporidium spp., which was complicated with stress due to the beaching. The bibliographic revue reports that the parasitosis by Cryptosporidium spp. is not present to Venezuela in the Cetacean order, according to the compiled information about the studied parasites for this order. The skeleton is currently in the Scientific Museum of the Biological Station Rancho Grande - MARNR.
Bovine oocytes vitrification has been used as one of the most promising cryopreservation protocols. Fear of the effects of cryoprotectant additives on the oocytes structural integrity have been posed. In this study, trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of vitrification over meiotic spindle structure and development capability in bovine oocytes. Based in this evidence, oocytes recently released from their follicles and in vitro matured were exposed at room temperature to vitrifying solutions (ethylenglicol and sucrose), also immature and in vitro matured oocytes were vitrified. Oocytes were stained in toto to assess nuclear maturation stage and meiotic spindle structural alterations were studied by immunocytochemistry. Oocytes at GV stage are more sensitive to the toxic effects caused by cryoprotectant agents at room temperature and to the cryopreservation procedure, assessed through meiotic progression and immunocytochemical analysis of meiotic spindle. The most frequently encountered anomaly was absence of meiotic spindle. Meiotic spindle structure in vitrified and IVM oocytes endure better the cryoinduced injuries compared with oocytes vitrified the GV stage. It is recommend the vitrification of in vitro matured bovine oocytes. Detection of Estrogen, Progesterone Receptors and Corticosteroid Binding Globulin in the Canine (Cannis Familiaris) Reproductive Female Tract.
The sexual steroid receptors of the genital tract of the female have significant importance since though them the hormones responsible acting. In their mechanism one of the factors to be kept in mind is the possible differences among the diverse species, the objective of this study was to evaluate in canine (N= 8) the presence of receptors of estrogens (ER), progesterone (PR) and the presence of corticosteroid binding globuline (CBG) in ovaries, oviduct and uterus of prepuberal female (N=.3) and matures: (N=5) It was used H-E and immunohistochemical study according to the technique of Stenberger (1979). The results during the oestrus showed: Immune reactivity (IR) positive, ER in uterus and ovary being much stronger in oviduct. The PR varied according the stage of oestrus cycle. In puberal female dog ER and PR were undetectable. The CBG revealed positive in reproductive tract of cycling females but negative in prepubertal. It was concluded that the presence of ER and PR are detectable in uterus, oviduct and ovary of mature female dogs varying their concentration according to the cycle. In prepuberal, its presences come undetectable differing from other species (ovine), in which they are detected at this stage of development. The constant of CBG presence during oeustrus cycle and such variation in other stages of the cycle, it might suggest its participation in the several reproductive activities.
Faecal nutrient digestibility of five tropical foliages was determined in 72 New Zealand x California fattening rabbits of 45 days old fed diets containing forage from either Leucaena leucocephala, Trichanthera gigantea, Morus alba, Arachis pintoi or Ipomoea batatas. Nutrient digestibility indices were determined by a direct method (total collection). There were differences (P<0.01) for the organic matter digestibility (45.41, 37.38, 60.51, 48.25 and 37.58%), content of digestible energy (2092, 1860, 2378, 1981 and 1388 kcal/kg) and digestible protein (14.97, 12.49, 12.79, 13.90 and 6.74 g/kg) for L. leucocephala, T. gigantea, M. alba, A. pintoi and I. batatas, respectively. Overall, diets containing mulberry foliage or sweet potato forage determined the highest and lowest values for faecal digestibility, respectively. The content of energy digestible and protein digestible, and the digestibility of nutriments in L. leucocephala, T. gigantea, M. alba and A. pintoi foliage allow to suggest that they present an interesting nutritious potential and constitute usable ingredients in rabbits diets formulation.
The objectives of this study were to identify and quantify the determinants of artificial insemination (AI) and to evaluate the effect of AI on the partial productivity indices of dual-purpose cattle farms located in Zulia State, Venezuela. A Logit model was used, resulting as the explanatory variables of the use of AI: degree education of farmer, size of farm, geographic location, and frequency of visit of producers to own farms. Regarding to partial productivity indices, the AI only had effect on animal productivity. Pedigree Analysis in Criollo Limonero http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592008000300008&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en In order to continue the genetic program for the conservation of the Criollo Limonero population, a study was carried out to evaluate the genetic variability of this local breed. For this purpose, 2552 genealogical records from the Criollo herd at the Carrasquero Local Station (INIA) located at Playa Bonita, Mara County, North of Zulia State-Venezuela, during the 1985-2003 period were used. Global inbreeding of the herd (fH) and animal inbreeding were determined; in addition, Average of relatedness (AR), probabilities of gene origin, number of founders (NF), effective number of founders (f e), effective ancestors number (f a), genome founders number (Ng ) and number of founders explaining 50% (F50) of the genetic variability. For the year 2003 fH was 0.35%, whereas AR, NF, f e, f a, Ng and F50 were 3.4%, 386, 63.5, 38, 27.71 and 18 respectively. Even though AR showed a high relationship among the individuals in the herd, fH did not have a significant increase. For this reason, mates should be planned carefully in order to avoid related mates. Probabilities of gene origin suggest that genetic variation has decreased in this population due to a bottleneck effect and genetic drift, without increasing inbreeding. An important genetic diversity exists in this population which should be preserved, given the importance of this genetic resource for the region and the country.
The objective of the present study was to establish a characterization of the lactation curve in milk production and milk composition of the Siboney of Cuba genotype in a basin of the La Habana province. A total of 310 cows were included, distributed in 10 herds, during approximately two years. Milk record was distributed during the 305 days of lactation length, that which corresponded to a weekly record and a total of 2125 production and milk composition data. In order to analyze the lactation curve, Ali and Schaeffer’ regression model was applied. The parameters of the curves were highly significant (adjusted R2 and bigger R at 0.90 and 0.92, respectively, P<0.001). Siboney of Cuba genotype is well adapted to tropics conditions, and shown a lactation curve with great persistency; milk components (milk fat, lactose and protein) had a uniform behaviour throughout lactation.
The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and protein System for sheep (CNCPS-S) was evaluated on its prediction capacity for daily weight gain and food intake of hair sheep. A data base containing information from 29 experiments, 1189 Pelibuey sheep and 93 diets was utilized. Data were grouped by sex, model adequacy was analyzed using correlation and lineal regression analysis (r and r²), the mean square error or standard error of the estimate (MSE), the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC, “Cb y Pc “), the mean square error of prediction (MSEP), the model efficiency (MEF), and the determination coefficient of the model (CD). Daily gain prediction was sub estimated by the model. The r, r² and Cb were higher in females than males with values of 0.84, 0.71, 0.87, 0.48, y 0.69, 0.79, respectively, the MEF values indicated a better efficiency with males as compared with females with values of -0.004 y 0.443, respectively; ewes have lower MSE than males, similarly MSEP and CD, the last one closer to the unity, indicated a better prediction by the model. It was concluded that the CNCPS-S model was more accurate for females and more precise for males. The evaluation of the model indicated that the CNCPS-S can be used for predicting daily gain on hair sheep, however some adjustments are needed in order to improve the estimations with hair sheep.
Evidences exist that during the testosterone synthesis there is production of free radicals, which could increase the testicular antioxidant answer to avoid the cellular oxidative damage. The aim of this investigation was to determine if exists association between the seric concentration of free testosterone (Tl) and the testicular activity of the enzyme glutatión peroxidasa (GPx) in mice of different ages. 40 male mice of stock NMRI coming from the Central Bioterio of the Universidad Centroccidental “Lisandro Alvarado” selected themselves, and they were divided in 5 groups of 8 animals, according to the age in days (d). Group (1): 21d, (2): 28d, (3): 35d, (4): 42d and (5): 49d. Under light eterización they were sacrificed, the blood was collected and in the serum the concentration of Tl by electrochemiluminescence was determined. The testicles were dissected, weighed and they were placed to 4°C in in a solution buffer 50 mm Tris-HCl and 5 mm EDTA to pH 7.6 to obtain homogenate in which one the activity of the GPx and the protein concentration was determined. To the results expressed in mU/ml and mU/mg proteins, were applied to a test of multiple comparisons (DMS) and Pearson‘s correlation. The concentration of Tl as the catalytic activity and specific of the GPx they were increased with the age (P<0.01). The increase of both variables was correlated in positive form (r=0.47) and this association was statistically significant (P<0.05) to the 21 days (prepuber stage) and 49 days (postpuber stage).
Many intestinal protozoa and helminthes species are pathogenic for domestic animals, including dogs, and several of them provide a source of potential infestation for humans. During July and August 2006, a total of 255 dogs with owner (148 females and 107 males) were surveyed in the community of La Vela, Falcon State, Venezuela. Parasitological examination was made by employing direct, and Willis-Molloy (NaCl) and Faust (zinc sulphate) flotation methods. One or more intestinal protozoa and/or helminthes were found in 195 (76.47%) of the examined dogs. Monoparasitism and multiparasitism (up to 3 parasitic species) was observed in 78.46 and 21.54% of the dogs, respectively. Ancylostomídeos (45.88%), Toxocara canis (31.77%) and Cystoisospora spp. (14.90%) were the most prevalents intestinal parasites. There was not a significant association between the prevalence of any intestinal parasites and canine agegroups neither between sexes. Most of dog owners were in poverty (>70%). A significant association was found between prevalences of T. canis [X²=24.7; Odds Ratio (OR) = 6.79; P=0.00001], Ancylostoma spp./Uncinaria spp. (X²= 34.49; OR=7.64; P=0.00001) and Cystoisospora spp. (X²= 10.25; OR=5.91; P=0.01) and socioeconomic status. 89.41% of the dogs were mongrel. A statistically significant association was detected between prevalences of T. canis (X²=13.97; OR= 4.45; P=0.00001) and Ancylostoma spp./Uncinaria spp. (X²= 5.25; OR=2.61; P=0.02) and the animal breeds.
The aim of this study was to optimize the mass transfer occurred during the vacuum pulse osmotic dehydration of sardine sheets by surface response and desired function methodologies. Sardines were cut into sheets and simultaneously immersed into a brine at given concentration and temperature according to a composite central rotatable design with 3 blocks. The experimental condition were 17; 19; 22; 25; 27 and 28.6% NaCl, 28.6; 30; 32; 34 and 35.4°C and 113; 140; 180; 220 y 247 min. Each sheet was weighed and moisture and salt contents were determined, then water and mass loss, and salt uptake were calculated. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and multiple lineal regressions to obtaining the models for studied variables, and then optimum zone for osmotic dehydration was found by response surface and desired function methodologies. By response surface, an optimum zone of concentration from 23.9 to 24.6% of NaCl, time from 204 to 208 min and temperature of 32.2°C was attained related to a water loss of 0.23 g water/g, uptake salt of 0.07 g NaCl/g and mass loss of 0.17 g/g. The optimum conditions of 23.9% NaCl, 207 min and 32.2°C were attained by desired function.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the physical and chemical parameters of lebranche (Mugil liza) fillets during frozen storage at -18°C for five months. Initially the raw fish were characterized for proximate analysis (moisture, protein, fat and ash), size and weight. Test for frozen fillets stability were performed monthly in order to determine: pH, lactic acid, colour (L, a and b), moisture, solubility of proteins in saline solutions (SPs), water-binding capacity (WBC), nucleotide degradation adenosine monophosphate (AMP), inosine (Ino), hypoxantine (Hx) and texture. Lost of the protein quality was more evident at the second month of storage, when parameters like SPs drop to 45.12% and WBC increased to 17.05% in comparison to the beginning of the study with values of SPs of 74.88% and WBC of 3.52%, these results showed significant protein damage during the storage time. In the frozen fillets autolytic changes were basically in pH, lactic acid, and Ino but these were considerably slowly for the low temperature employed in this study. Colour changes were detected in the white and red muscle fillets, and they showed different behavior during the storage time; in the first the red colour (parameter “a”) decreased, meanwhile in the red muscle redness was increased, but the luminosity (parameter “L”) were increased in the white muscle and decreased in the red muscle. In this research the storage time shows significant differences (P<0.05) with: pH, lactic acid, colour, moisture, SPs, WBC, nucleotides and texture. Fillets showed good grade of freshness until the second month, after that quality decreased.
