The Maracaibo basin has been catalogued as one of the most important basins worldwide, the La Luna Formation (FLL) being the main source rock. Nonetheless, other formations have been defined as source rocks of secondary importance. This is the case of some of the formations included in the Cogollo group (Apón and Maraca formations). The purpose of this study was to determine and compare geochemical parameters in order to characterize the Cretaceous sequence represented in the well core 26D-2. In order to do that, first a physical description of the samples was made, together with mineralogical analyses and the determination of the total carbon, inorganic (carbonate) and total organic carbon (TOC). Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses were also made to determine the type of kerogen and the maturity range of the samples. The bitumen was extracted and separated into maltenes and asphaltenes. The maltene fraction was then separated in saturate and aromatic hydrocarbons and resins. To obtain both biomarkers and aromatic markers, a gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis was done. Lastly the asphaltene fraction was analyzed using gel permeation chromatography to determine the molecular weight in number (Mw) and in weight (Mw). Considering the results obtained through pyrolysis, biomarkers and aromatic markers, the Cretaceous sequence analyzed presented a mixed organic matter input, the sedimentary facies were marine, carbonatic and siliciclastic and the samples show an early to intermediate maturity range STUDY OF LATERITIC WEATHERING PROFILES NEAR UPATA, BOLIVAR STATE http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200004&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se estudiaron perfiles lateríticos del tope de los cerros Algarrobo, Copeyal, El Chorro, Mesa de la Carata y El Toro, ubicados en los alrededores de Upata en el estado Bolívar, Venezuela.
Lateritic profiles from the tops of Algarrobo, Copeyal, El Chorro, Mesa de la Carata and El Toro hills, located near Upata in Bolivar State, were studied. The aim of this study is to establish the complexity of the lateritic profiles which form the upper part of the mentioned hills, in order to clarify the processes that gave rise to them. Idealized profiles were established using field relations. Textural elements were studied on macro (hand specimens and binocular magnifying glass) and micro (EPMA) scale. The recognized and proposed profiles on these hills do not correspond to the classical lateritic profile evolution, but represent sequences of lateritic materials of a different nature deposited after the erosion of preexisting lateritic and bauxitic substrates. On Copeyal Hill, in a 50 m thick profile, the limits of sedimentary sequences deposited on the slope of an old valley can be seen. Two erosional surfaces (S1 and S2) were identified. Above the S1 surface, the contact of the strata has an apparent ‘sawteeth’ shape, which could correspond to ‘flame type’ structures, a paleoseismicity indicator. The EPMA analysis allowed us to infer the spatial distribution of elements in minerals. Results confirm the complex nature of the samples, showing evidence of diagenetic processes supporting the sedimentary origin of these profiles. Based on the texture, mineralogy and chemical composition of the bauxite and laterite samples from these hills, a petrographic fabric suggest that polygenetic origin and diagenetic nature becomes evident GEOCHEMISTRY OF CRUDE OILS FROM THE ORINOCO OIL BELT, VENEZUELA http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200005&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se presenta el estudio de biomarcadores S y los elementos traza V, Ni, Mo, Cr en crudos de la Faja Petrolífera del Orinoco (FPO), Venezuela.
This work presents the study of biomarkers, sulfur and trace elements V, Ni, Mo, Cr in crude oils from the Orinoco Oil Belt, Venezuela. The results are interpreted based on the identification of the origin of the oils, their correlation and secondary processes in the reservoir. All oils are biodegraded, with the absence of n-alkanes and isoprenoids phytane and pristane. Based on the scale of biodegradation, three oil groups can be distinguished: Group A: level of biodegradation 4 with abundance of tricyclic terpane (C23-3), without evidence of alteration of hopanes (C29 and C30), homohopanes (C31 to C35) and steranes (C27-C29); and absence of demethylated hopanes. Group B: level of biodegradation 6 to 7, with abundance of the tricyclic terpane (C23-3), presence of hopanes (C29 and C30), homohopanes (C31 to C35), and steranes (C27-C29), presence of demethylated hopanes. Group C: level of biodegradation 7 characterized by the abundant tricyclic terpane (C23-3), alteration of hopanes (C29 and C30), homohopanes (C31 to C35), and steranes (C27-C29), and the presence of demethylated hopanes. Based on the distribution pattern of methyl the dibenzothiophene isomers, all oils were generated by a carbonatic source rock, with the exception of the oils from the Carabobo area, which present evidence of generation by a siliciclastic source rock. These crude oils have been generated by a mature source rock, based on the methylphenanthrene index and the calculated vitrinite reflectance (Rc). The V/Ni and Mo/(Mo + Cr) ratios and the S concentration indicate the presence of three oil families (Groups I, II, and III). Nevertheless, the possibility that these oils have been generated by the same source rock deposited under variable redox (Eh) conditions cannot be ruled out MILESTONES IN THE SOCIO-HISTORICAL PROCESS OF VENEZUELAN ENGINEERING 1958-1998 http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200006&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se presenta un detallado registro en secuencia temporal de eventos, circunstancias y personajes relacionados con la evolución de la ingeniería venezolana en la parte final del siglo XX, desde 1958 hasta 1998.
We present a detailed register of events, circumstances and protagonists involved in the evolution of engineering in Venezuela in the latter part of the twentieth century from 1958 to 1998. The first date was chosen as, with the end of the military dictatorship, it marked a transition between quite distinct socio-economic and politico-institutional phases in our contemporary history, a fact that has been widely accepted and recognized as such in research on the subject. The closing date also appears to signal a moment of change, even though this is still under debate mainly due to it being so recent. Our inventory of events is a necessary step towards building a holistic vision and interpretation of a fundamental period in the history of engineering in the country which, in turn, helps us to understand engineering today and what it may become in the future. The value of this study is that it provides a compilation that has not been previously presented in this way, both for the relative proximity to the present of the period covered and because other efforts have tended to concentrate on specialized areas rather than give a broad view of the development of Venezuelan engineering NITRATE LEACHATE FROM UNDISTURBED SOIL COLUMNS FROM TWO SOILS IN THE VALENCIA LAKE BASIN http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200007&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se cuantificó el nitrato lixiviado en columnas de suelo sin disturbar de 2 suelos agrícolas diferentes en cuanto a sus propiedades químicas y físicas durante cuatro meses.
Nitrate leaching was assessed in undisturbed soil columns in two agricultural soils. Initially, nitrate content at different horizons was much higher in lacustrine soil than in the alluvial soil. In lacustrine soil, nitrate leaching gradually increased, reaching the highest peak at day 72, when it started to decrease, while the alluvial remained virtually constant throughout the experiment. Nitrate leaching concentration in lacustrine soil (50.48 mg L-1) is 5 times higher than the maximum tolerable limit for environmental standards. In alluvial soil it was lower (20.78 mg L-1), but it is still twice the maximum acceptable concentration. Therefore, it is considered that irrigation acts as a promoter of the processes of nitrification produced by microorganisms in the soil at the expense of organic matter, which leads to loss of NO3- through lixiviation. Because of the higher content of organic matter, high permeability and higher requirements of irrigation water, the absolute amounts of nitrate leaching in lacustrine soil were much higher (436 mg) than that of alluvial soil (30 mg) after 4 months CADMIUM CONCENTRATION IN DIFERENT PARTICLES SIZES OF LAKE VALENCIA BASIN SOIL http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200008&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en La investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar las concentraciones de cadmio en fracciones hidrosolubles, unidas a los carbonatos y totales en partículas de diferentes tamaños de un suelo de la cuenca del Lago de Valencia, Venezuela.
The objective of this study is to determine the concentration of cadmium in hydrosoluble fractions, associated with carbonates and totals in different sizes in a soil particles from the Valencia Lake (Venezuela) basin. Lacustrine soil from the Guacara zone with important concentrations of cadmium was used, sifted through a 2 mm screen. The soil was physically fractionated according to particle size, through 1mm, 0,5mm and 0,25 mm stainless steel sieves in a sequential order. For the chemical analysis, the soil was screened with each sieve. For the cadmium total extraction, the methodology used was the 3050 (Carter, 1993) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, (USEPA), while for the hydrosoluble and carbonate associated cadmium, Martinez’s (2005) proposed methodology was employed.. The cadmium concentration for each extract was determined by atomic absorption. The obtained concentrations were subject to statistical analysis. The results point out that the 2 mm sieved soil is 42% made up by ≤0,25 mm particle size. The total cadmium soil concentration resulted over the agricultural soils limits (0,7 mgCd/kg-soil) and lacustre lacustrine sediment norms (0.1-1,5 mgCd/ kg-soil). For the small particles, the highest hydrosoluble fractions (6%) and carbonate associated (24%) were obtained.
The aim of the present work was to study the spatial and temporal distribution of the total atmospheric suspended particles (TSP) in the city of Caracas (Los Ruices, Bello Campo, Cementerio, La Yaguara, La Trinidad and El Silencio). The TSP has been collected by using a high volume sampler and glass fiber filter, collected each six days during 24 hours, as has been established by Venezuelan regulations. The concentration of TSP was calculated by dividing the weight of particles deposited on the filter and the volume of air sampled. This information has been processed to obtain its distribution (geometric average) monthly, annually and for the entire period. The value of TSP concentration for each station during the first six months of the year is higher, especially during March and April. The average TSP concentrations for the El Silencio, El Cementerio, La Yaguara, La Trinidad and Los Ruices stations were 97, 57, 88, 46 y 63 mg/m³, respectively for the 1981-1991 period and during 1992-2006 were 71 mg/m³ for El Silencio, 48 mg/m³ for Los Ruices, 45 mg/m³ for Bello Campo and 43 mg/m³ for El Cementerio.
The design and construction of two PIFA configurations is presented: the first is capacitively fed by a parallel plate and the second by an array of two elements with an L shape capacitively fed probe operating in the 800 MHz band. The cavity model was chosen to find the preliminary value of the structures; and with simulators the dimensions and height of the feed structure is adjusted. In the first design, the bandwidth was 10,35% (VSWR ≤ 1.5), and in the second design, it was 10%. The structures were mounted to check VSWR. The relative error for the first antenna was 26 % in the range of 800 MHz to 900 MHz, and with the second antenna, the error was 16 %. The cavity model gives good approximation for the preliminary value. The feed that shows best performance in terms of mechanical rigidity, feed point and matching coupling was the probe feed in L shape SIMULATION OF A MULTISTAGE RADIAL PUMP FOR BIPHASIC WATER-AIR FLOW http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652010000200011&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en El siguiente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal la simulación de una bomba radial multietapas para flujo bifásico aireagua, en dos etapas consecutivas.
The main aim of this study is the simulation of a multistage radial pump for biphasic water-air flow in two consecutive stages. Bladegen and AnsysWorkBench Modules were used for rotor, stator and block geometry generation. Firstly, grid validation was performed. The system was assembled, and nine runs were carried out, corresponding to 80% nominal discharge, nominal and 120% nominal discharge. Monophasic flow, biphasic flow with 1% and 2% of gas void fraction were considered. It was observed that for biphasic flow with 1% GVF, the second stage presents, compared to the first stage, an increase of 10% for pumping head, a similar increase in hydraulic efficiency, and a decrease of 1,65% for theoretical head. The larger the gas void fraction at the entrance of the pump, the more noticeable these tendencies were observed. It was concluded that the decrease in pumping heads is due to flow contraction, friction and choke in rotors, and deflection in stators. The flow is better directed in the rotor 2 entrance, and there is less deflection in stator 2.
Environmental pollution caused by the oil industry is an issue of increasing concern and interest among research groups, due to the high content of pollutants, the impact on the environment and the effect on the quality of life of the inhabitants who live close to these industries.
This research attempts to develop a proposal for the development of biodegradable polymer film based on Chitosan, synthesized from chitin extracted from shells of shrimp species L. vannamei that can be found on the Peninsula of Paraguaná- Venezuela. Chitin was isolated from the shrimp shells selected through various chemical methods giving yields between 79 % and 94 %. Then, through thermal alkaline desacetilation, at 120 °C, chitosan was obtained, reaching levels of between 94 % and 97 %, and viscosimetric molecular weights between 3 x 10(5) y 4 x 10(5) g/mol. With the obtained chitosan, solutions were prepared using the solvent casting technique (at a temperature around 50 ºC) to prepare pure chitosan film and plastifiant chitosan adding 0.2 % of glycerin using dilute acetic acid as solvent. The mechanical properties of samples were determined, finding a good plasticizer effect through the presence of the glycerin. The study of degradation of the plastic film and the pure chitosan film was carried out in compost systems in different parts of the country (arid zone in Punto Fijo city and a wet zone in the city of Los Teques ). The degradation was measured by weight loss (%) and the superficial morphology of the films using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The degraded films in the arid zone showed a decrease in the degradation rate compared to the degraded films in wetlands, as expected, due to the conditions given to the process of enzymatic hydrolysis that can occur in wetlands
