The present investigation has the purpose of characterize the ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE-Gur- 1050), irradiated at 100 and 50 kGy in argon atmosphere at 25ºC, and at a rate of 4.8 kGy/h; After that, they were stored in vitamin E at a concentration of 0.1 wt%. In order to obtain better properties for the use in orthopedics, the samples irradiated at 100 kGy where annealing at 120ºC and the ones at 50 kGy at 140ºC. The crosslinking predominant reactions, in the case of 140ºC remelting temperature, has a greater effect than at 120ºC, showing also greater hardness and resistance to compression, In spite of that they showed a 10% decreasing in the Young module. The FTIR analysis shows a lesser relation of carbonyl groups, related to the transvilidenes groups. It was not found the presence of oxidant species by means of UV and ESR spectroscopy. From the results, can be inferred that the UHMWPE, remelted at 140ºC is more appropriated for the design and manufacturing of prosthesis due to its longer lifespan DEVELOPMENT AND ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCES IN TECHNICAL SUBJECTS OF ENGINEERING STUDIES: AN APPROACH http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100003&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en El presente trabajo trata sobre una metodología de enseñanza aprendizaje basada en desarrollar competencias en asignaturas pertenecientes a titulaciones de Ingeniería Técnica Industrial.
This study attempts to reconstruct the path that the teaching of this professional field in the country has taken. As such, we present both a detailed inventory of the historical events that mark the process of the formation of engineers in Venezuela (something that as far as we understand has not been studied before systematically) as well as putting forward a tentative scheme that divides these events into periods that allow us to understand the process better. This scheme begins in colonial times and ends in 1998 and comprises the following phases: 1) From the Colony to Guzman Blanco (1760-1872);2) From Guzmán Blanco to the beginning of the petroleum era (1873-1922); 3) The beginning of the petroleum era (1923-1957); 4) Modernization and representative democracy (1958-1982); 5) Crisis and the teaching of engineering (1983-1998). We conclude that examining the national historical process of the teaching of engineering as a whole validates the usefulness of the elements of analysis employed and proposed in this study to understand the role of this professional field in the social dynamic of Venezuela MAP OF MAGNETIC ANOMALIES OF VENEZUELA DERIVED FROM SATELLITE DATA http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100005&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se presenta un mapa a escala 1:2.000.000 de la anomalía magnética de campo total en Venezuela, proyectada a cuatro mil (4000) metros de altura sobre el nivel medio del mar, en la ventana geográfica 0° a 13° de latitud Norte y 58° a 74° de longitud Oeste.
The main aim of this work was the design of an injection mould with the purpose of preparing test specimens, using a new system of interchangeable and sliding cavities. The proposed mould is able to hold inserts able to, manufacture the individualized test specimen by injection moulding. Nowadays, the trend toward the design of moulds with interchangeable cavities intended for easing the process of obtaining diverse plastic parts in the same mould, present the characteristic of fixing the system of plates by means of several screws. This system presents important drawback, at the moment of a rapid change of them, like the trend of having to make a great manual effort and to spend considerable amount of time. The present work presents the design of a mould with sliding and interchangeable cavities, under ASTM 6141 and ISO 294-1 norms. The design of two interchangeable and sliding cavities is developed: one with the purpose of producing tensile test specimen and the other for manufacturing rectangular bars (for flexion or impact tests). In order to shape and validate the designed mold and the proposed cavities, the Pro/ENGINEER and C-MOLD software were used. Two preliminary designs were formulated considering horizontal or vertical possible movements of the interchangeable cavities in the system of plates of the injection mould. The comparative evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of every mould favoured the horizontal system, due to its operational facility associated with the guaranty of an easy manipulation and immobilization of cavities Influence of cutting parameters and material properties on cutting temperature when turning stainless steel http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100008&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Cutting temperature is one of the most relevant aspects of machining operations, since it influences tool life. The feed, the cutting speed, the depth of cut and the workpiece material are some of the most important factors that affect the cutting temperature. In this study an empirical relationship between cutting parameters such as: cutting speed, feed, depth of cut as well as maximum strength and thermal conductivity of different stainless steels, on the cutting temperature is presented. Experiments were conducted on AISI 304, AISI 316L and AISI 420 steels during a turning process. For the measurement of the cutting temperature the “Tool- Piece-Thermopair” method was used and the design of experiments was based on the factorial design method. Results showed that the cutting temperature increases when the values of cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, and material maximum strength are increased and that the cutting temperature decreases with the increase of material’s thermal conductivity, being this last variable the one that showed most influence on the cutting temperature
The environmental and socio-cultural impact assessment (EIASC due to its abbreviations in Spanish) of a project has the measures that should be implemented by the project’s promoter in order to protect health and the construction’s surroundings. Also EIASC has a plan in order to check in situ effectiveness of these measures (environmental supervision plan). The environmental law (2006) states that the deposits given in compliance with the established in EIASC will not be freed until such observance will be verified. It is raised the need to define indicators that provide information to the national authority of Venezuela to decide about that. This work makes a proposal for such decision, keeping the “planning-makingchecking- acting” model of environmental management according to FONDONORMA-ISO 14031 regulation. The main management indicator proposed is the grade of environmental measures fulfilment. The operational performance indicators proposed are those referring to natural resources affectation during the deforestation and soil movement, as well as the use of water at works and the wastes production. The environmental condition indicators proposed are equal to guidelines selected from the environmental follow-up programs project made at EIASC FUZZY CONTROLLER DESIGN BASED ON THE DIAGRAM OF THE PARALLEL DISTRIBUTED COMPENSATOR (PDC) http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100010&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en En este artículo se presenta una metodología para la estabilización de sistemas no lineales.
A methodology for stabilization of non-linear systems is presented in this article. The fuzzy model proposed by Takagi- Sugeno (T-S), which shows the possibility to approximate non-linear systems by means of modeling using fuzzy logic techniques, assigning a linear equation to the consequent of each rule, is used. This characteristic allows that, for each linear subspace or model rule, a fuzzy controller can be derived that combines the action of the linear controllers of each rule. In the method of the parallel distributed compensator (PDC), a linear controller from each rule is obtained and the result is a fuzzy controller which is a fuzzy combination of the obtained controllers in each rule. Three examples of non linear systems that reach stability by means of the proposed method are presented EXPERIMENTAL TESTS OF A SEVEN LEVEL MULTILEVEL CONVERTER WITH AUXILIARY SWITCHES CIRCUIT http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100011&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Este trabajo presenta las pruebas experimentales de laboratorio de un conversor de siete niveles en la configuración puente H con conmutadores auxiliares.
In this work, a study was performed on the carboxymethylation of cassava starch in aqueous media by employing monochloroacetic acid as the modification reagent. All the variables that can affect the process of chemical modification were systematically studied. The five selected reaction variables were: activation time, activation temperature, starch/solvent ratio (w/v %) and the molar ratio between the following reactants: activating agent:modifying agent:anhydroglucose units (NaOH:MCAA:AGU). These variables were analyzed with the aim of optimizing the reaction conditions which could yield the highest degrees of substitution (DS) and the highest viscosity values in aqueous solution. This represents a novel approach to the chemical modification of starch since it balances the degree of substitution obtained with the minimization of chemical degradation during the reaction. It was observed that even though factors like temperature increases or longer reaction times favored higher DS values, they also lead to viscosity reductions. The conditions that yield the products with the highest viscosities are: a starch concentration of 5% in water, 50 ºC as activation temperature, 2 hours of activation, 3 hours of reaction and a molar relationship between reactants equal to 2:1:1 (NaOH:MCAA:AGU). The maximum viscosity value at low shear rates obtained was 0.26 Pa•s when it was measured in a saline solution at 3% w/w of modified starch and 0.1 M of NaCl TATISTICAL DIFFERENCES AMONG PORE DISTRIBUTION MODELS OBTAINED FROM REJECTION PROFILE OF ULTRAFITRATION MEMBRANES http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652011000100013&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en La distribución efectiva de poros de las membranas de ultrafiltración, se obtiene a partir de datos experimentales de curvas de rechazo de diferentes tipos de membranas y solutos.
The effective pore size distribution of ultrafiltration membranes’ is obtained from the experimental rejection profile of different types of membranes and solutes.
The API 5L steel (American Petroleum Institute) is an alloy extensively use in oil and gas industry particularly for manufacturing pipeline to transport hydrocarbons. Several of main features of this steel are its excellent mechanical properties and weldeability, with a ferritic-perlitic microstructure. The GMAW-P weld is a kind of GMW (Gas Meeting Welding) Process which uses an electric arc between the filler and the charco of the weld. The process of continuous introduction of the electrode is replaced by a metal introduction where the transfer is carried out by tiny drops which are inducing by interval spaced regularly. In this study it was determined a set of welding parameters (Tp, lp, Tb, lb) for GMAW pulsed process to beveled joints of the API 5L steel with 9mm of thickness using a filler wire of ER70S-6- The results were satisfactory because a weld bead with good penetration was obtain, just as a excellent superficial finished and mechanical properties similar to the base metal after the process application
