The amino acids composition of the muscle tissue of pintado (Pseudoplatystoma corruscans) was determined with basis on the ideal protein concept. Ten fishes with initial weight of 2.58 ± 0.52 kg were used for analysis. The AAE/L ratios [(each essential amino acid content including cystine and tyrosine/lysine) x 100], of 29.58, 42.35, 33.50, 11.25, 68.02, 23.89, 42.73, 49.81, 43.36, 76.86 e 52.47%, for methionine, methionine + cystine, threonine, thriptophan, arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucinae phenylalanine, phenylalanine + tyrosine, and valine, of muscle tissue, respectively, suggest that the amino acid requirements of "pintado" are not greatly different among species. The AAE/L ratio will provide valuable index for supplemental amino acids in diets for "pintado".
In order to evaluate some feeding strategies after weaning of calves receiving a base diet of chopped forage, an experiment was carried out to compare two levels of concentrate of 1 and 2 kg/day, with or without the supply ad libitum of gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) foliage, and its effect on intake and live weight gain (LWG). Twenty four Bos indicus x Bos taurus calves were used, stalled in individual pens and the intake of diet components was determined from birth to weaning, at 17 weeks old, and during the following 12 weeks, when treatments were applied. LWG were 0.54 ± 0.20 kg/day before weaning and 0.49 and 0.68 kg/day (P<0.01) after weaning in treatments with 1 and 2 kg/day concentrate. The supply of gliricidia did not improve LWG, as a consequence of its low intake, of 0.30 and 0.47 kg/day, during the two months after weaning, when the animals had 5 and 6 months old. However, intake increased during the last month of the trial, with an estimated supply of metabolizable energy and crude protein similar to the treatment with 2 kg/day concentrate. It was concluded that the supplementation with gliricidia foliage after two months of early weaning is insufficient to substitute the use of 1 kg/day concentrate.
A study was made to determine correlation between ingestion rate and survival of blue shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, through its larval development when it was fed with different nutritional regimes. Shrimps were fed with four different concentrations of Chaetoceros calcitrans combined with Tetraselmis suecica and nauplii of Artemia franciscana. Results showed that the highest rate of ingestion and survival was obtained with a combination of 90x10³ cél.•ml-1 of C. Calcitrans; 10x10³ cél •ml-1 of T. suecica and 6 nauplii•ml-1 of A. franciscana. It was found that a positive correlation between survival and ingestion rate exist in all larval stages, showing the highest correlation (r= 0,72) in transition from mysis 3 to postlarva 1. Significant correlation values were found in all cases (P<0.05).
In a tropical dry forest, in the south area of the Aragua state in Venezuela and during the dry season, the native woody leguminous fruits, Chloroleucon manguense, Pithecellobium saman, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Acacia macracantha, Senna atomaria, Caesalpinia granadillo and Caesalpinia coriaria, commodnly consumed by the ruminants were evaluated. To know their chemical and structural composition, and mineral contents, these fruits were divided up in entire fruit, seed and fruit without seed. Furthermore, ruminal degradability of the dry matter of different fractions was evaluated by means of the nylon bag technique. There was observed a great variation among species for PC and ELN contents in the entire fruits. C. manguense showed the higher PC (21%) value, while C. coriaria and C. granadillo the lowest (4%). PC contents of the seeds were located in a range between 16 and 29%, with the higher value for C. manguense. Similarly, values for FDN and FDA ranged from18 to 62%, and 13 to 41%, respectively. In both cases, the lowest values of these fractions were observed for C. coriaria fruit and the highest to S. atomaria. In all cases, the entire fruits showed higher degradabilidad than the fruits without seed, with the higher values for P. saman (62%) and E. cyclocarpum (81%) fruits. Ca. P Mg, Cu, and S contents on these fruits seem to be important to complement ruminant diets.
Over the basis of experiences that generated between 95% and 100% of sprouting of Gliricidia sepium, in function of stake diameters and lengths, weight and volume of G. sepium fodder (Villa del Rosario ecotype) were determined by using one year old shoots from trees grown in Tucapé, Táchira state, Venezuela, planted in 1993, at an altitude of 1135 masl. After a full pruning of the trees, the biomass was measured and the edible foliage was eliminated. Afterwards, stakes were cut at lengths of 10, 20, and 50 cm, with diameters of > 5.5 cm, 4.5 - 5.5 cm, and 2.5 - 4.5 cm, respectively. In order to assess the agro-economic impact of using different lengths and diameters of G. sepium stakes as reported in the literature, weights and volumes needed to be carried were estimated mathematically, to establish 634 stakes per km of live fence, using long stakes, and 10.000 plants per ha using either long or short stakes, according to the reports. To obtain 3.850 kg of short stakes from Villa del Rosario trees requires 8 day wages, haulage and 350 truck freight or its equivalent, a chain saw and a power saw. Long stakes with lengths of 250 cm and diameters ≥6 cm are the most efficient for establishing live fences. The best measures of short stakes near the agricultural optimum for propagation were: >1, ≥4.5 and ≥5.5 cm in diameter and 50, 20 and 10 cm in length, respectively. Using stakes with different diameters and lengths, as those reported in several sources, increase the effort of propagating G. sepium 3.5 - 17.2 times more than required to sow agronomical efficient stakes.
An experiment was carried out in Yaracal Municipality Cacique Manaure, State Falcon, to measure the effect of the fertilization with four phosphorus levels (0 [control], 50, 100 and 200 kg P2O5/ha, on the biomass (DM production), height and relationship leaf/tiller(L/T) of Brachiaria humidicola, B. decumbens and B. brizantha. The soil used shows a franc-oozy texture, acid pH and very low phosphorus content. A block design was used in with sub-divided plots; main plots: phosphorus, sub-plots: species and sub sub-plots: cut date. The phosphoric source comes from: phosphate rock coming found in Riecito. The fertilization was completed with 100 kg N/ha and 100 kg K2O/ha. Four cuts were carried out to the fourth and sixth week of the regrowth. The DM in P1, P2 and P3 was similar, but it registered significant differences (P<0.01) with the control (P1:2116, P2:2233, P3:2404 vs P0:1544 kg DM/ha/cut to the fourth week and P1:3495, P2:3744, P3:4107 vs P0:2,551 kg DM/ha/cut to the sixth week). The B. humidicola was superior (P<0,01) to that of B. brizantha and B. decumbens (2384, 1945 and 1895 kg DM/ha/cut respectively to the fourth week and 3919, 3246 and 3261 kg DM/ha/cut to the sixth week). Likewise the cut date affected significantly (P<0.01) the DM. The height presented a similar behavior to the DM and the relationship L/T it diminished significantly (P<0.05) with the treatments with fertilization in relation to the control. In conclusion, the amount of phosphorus content in the fertilizer did not show a significant effect, the differences within the control are attributable mainly to the effect of the nitrogen content. Agronomic potential of Centrosema pubescens in well drained savannas of Anzoátegui state, Venezuela. http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692003000200007&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Centrosema pubescens es una leguminosa forrajera, ampliamente distribuida en América tropical, considerada como intolerante a suelos ácidos.
Centrosema pubescens is a widespread distributed forage legume in tropical America. It is considered intolerant to acid soils; however some accessions or similar species like Centrosema acutifolium can be tolerant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate both the adaptability and productivity of 23 accessions of C. pubescens to well drained savanna conditions, with acid and low natural fertility soils, of Venezuela. The experiment was conducted at the experimental station located in El Tigre, Anzoátegui State (8° 51’ N, 64° 12’W, and 265 masl. The accessions used in the experiment were collected in Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, obtaining the seeds from the International Center of Tropical Agriculture, CIAT, Colombia. A standardization cut was made 15 weeks after planting. Forage dry-matter production, rooting capacity, and stolon length were evaluated every 12 weeks, during two years. A randomized complete block design was used, using 27 treatments (accessions) and three replications. Twenty three accessions of C. pubescens selected for good performance in an infertile acid soil were tested along with two control lines consisting on two accessions of C. pubescens and C. acutifolium. Means were compared using the Duncan test (P<0,05). Flowering onset and seed production were evaluated in an additional plot and the data were analyzed using confidence interval. The results showed that two accessions of C. pubescens collected in Venezuela were outstanding among the others: CIAT 15160 for its high forage and seed production and CIAT 5169 for high seed production and rooting at the stolon nodes. It is highly recommended to do further studies with these accessions considering legume production and persistence under grazing when mixed with grasses.
