In order to evaluate the effect of the level of hen manure on the intake of diets for stalled fed growing lambs, an experiment was carried out using a Latin square 3x3 design, with 12 days periods and two squares. The treatments consisted in three levels of hen manure in the ration: 30 (TA), 40 (TB) and 50% (TC) and mean differences were analyzed by the Tukey test. Six male lambs crossed from tropical breeds (West African and Barbados Black Belly) were used, with an initial live weight of 15±1.3 kg. The animals were housed in individual pens provided with feeding troughs and drinking water. The ingredients of the diets were maize cobs, sugar cane molasses, tallow, and wheat meadling, included to complete 100% of the complete rations. These diets were offered ad libitum and weighed daily in order to estimate individual intake. Chemical composition of rations TA, TB and TC were 18.7, 18 and 17.5% CP, 4.8, 7.9 and 9.4% Ca and 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9% P. The level of hen manure in the ration did not affect significantly the intake, so it could be included in the highest level (50%) without effect on growing lambs intake.
To evaluate two levels of maize cobs (t) in diets containing poultry litter on the productive behaviour of growing lambs, an experiment was conducted for 60 days, using a split plot design. The main plots where the animals and the secondary plots the different measurements in the time, to compare two treatment according to maize cob level in the diet: T1: 26% and T2: 13%. Other ingredients were poultry litter (50%), sugar cane molasses (5%), tallow (3%) and wheat meadling, included to complete 100% of the complete rations. Fourteen crossbred (West African x Barbados Black Belly) male lambs (initial body weight mean 15.5±1.4 kg) were divided in two groups and were located in individual pens. The chemical composition of the rations T1 and T2 were: 16.9 and 17.5% CP, 6.7 and 5.8% EE, 36.1 and 37.8% NDF, 11.3 and 9.4% Ca, and 2.0 and 1.9% P, respectively. Average DM consumption was 856 g/day and no differences between treatments were found (P> 0.05). Body weight gains (BW gain) in T1 and T2 were 58.2 and 99.2 g/day (P <0.05), respectively. Feed conversions were 18.5 and 9.4 g DM feed/g BW gain. It was concluded that in complete rations with 50% poultry litter, an increase in the content of maize cobs from 13 to 26% did not affect DM intake, but decreased the BW gain and increased the feed conversion. The use of low cost abundant resources in rations for lambs, such as maize cobs and poultry litter, may allow similar BW gain to those usually found in tropical conditions.
To evaluate the effect of the partial substitution of the feed protein by urea (U) on dry matter intake (DMI) and on daily weight gain (DWG) in lambs, two experiments were undertaken in the Ovine Unit in the Ceniap-INIA, Venezuela. In the first, twenty West African lambs (av. wt. 21±1.5 kg) were assigned to five diets, where urea replaced part of the protein from fishmeal (FM). In the second, twenty West African lambs (av. wt. 14±0.48 kg) were assigned to five diets where urea replaced the protein from soybean meal (SBM). In both experiments, urea was included at the levels of 0, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3% of the supplement. The daily ration of lambs was 300 g of supplement plus chopped hay of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) offered ad libitum. In the first experiment with FM, the daily intake of MS was the same among treatments, averaging 904.2±43 g/d. DWG was found to be different among treatments (P<0,05), with the higher value for 1,5, 2 and 3% U (60.0, 67,5 and 3% U (61.0). The 1% U (32.5) was similar to the control (40.0). Similarly, feed conversion was improved (P<0.05) for the treatments with 1.5, 2 and 3% U, with values of 16, 15.5 and 14.8, respectively, which were lower than control (21.0) and 1% U (27.5) treatments. In the second experiment with SBM, there were observed differences (P<0.05) in DMI between control (0% U) and 1% U treatments (763.07 vs. 631.82 g/d). Higher levels of U showed intermediate values (654.77, 688.41 and 717.72 g/d, for 1.5, 2 and 3% U levels, respectively). DWG was significantly different among treatments, with the highest gain for the treatment with 1% U (98.75 g/d). This value for 1.5% U (75.42 g/d) was similar to control (75.00 g/d). Higher levels of substitution showed intermediate gains (87.92 and 88.75 g/d for the 2 and 3% U treatments, respectively). In this experiment, feed conversions were similar among treatments, with an overall value of 8.27. Independently of the protein source, in this experience, urea replaced the protein of the daily ration, without affecting lamb’s growth, approximately 25%.
A study in the experimental field of the Animal Production Institute, Agronomy Department, of the Universidad Central de Venezuela was carried out in order to evaluate the N fixation of Leucaena leucocephala, Gliricidia sepium, and Albizia lebbeck and its transfer to an associate mixed pasture (Cynodon dactylon x Digitaria swazilandensis). Associated plots of 10x2 m were used with two densities (4,000 and 8,000 plants/ha) and grass plots of 4x5 m, fertilized with six nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 kg N/ha). A randomized design with three repetitions and 11 treatments was used. The following variables were evaluated: grass dry matter, herbaceous legumes dry matter, dry matter of shrub legumes, edible dry matter, weeds dry matter, nitrogen total yield and fixed and transferred nitrogen. The results obtained in biomass production, yield of N, fixation and transfer of N evidenced that with three shrub legumes is possible to substitute the nitrogen fertilization in a range from 0 to 200 kg N/ha. On the other hand, the sowing density factor had an effect on L. leucocephala only, for fixation and transfer. Also, the ability of A. lebbeck of giving a bigger proportion of the fixed N suggests its potential to be associated with grasses with more demand of N, under the conditions that the experiment was developed.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the ileal and faecal digestibilities of various dietary components of toasted Canavalia ensiformis (194±2°C x 18 min) in pigs. Eight castrated male pigs (20 kg, on the average) were surgically modified to create an ileo rectal anastomosis for use in an ileal digestibility trial. In addition, eight pigs (29.5kg) were used in a fecal digestibility trial. In both experiments, apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, nitrogen, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), ether extract, energy and amino acids were estimated. Chemical analysis of raw and toasted canavalia, including canavanine and haemoagglutinating activity, were determined. A standard basal diet was prepared. Twenty percent of toasted canavalia were mixed thoroughly with the basal diet. The data indicated that toasting of raw canavalia seeds reduced total amino acids and their digestibilities in approximately 50%. The original canavanine content in raw canavalia beans was reduced by 95% following toasting. No haemagglutination activity was detected in toasted canavalia beans. NDF and ADF contents in the raw seeds were markedly increased due to the toasting procedure employed. Total amino acid digestibility in toasted seeds was estimated to be 52.8%. In summary, although toasting the raw beans of Canavalia ensiformis at 194°C/18min was effective to reduce or abolish the antinutricional effects of the raw seeds, the resulting nutritional value of the toasted seeds for growing pigs was rather low.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding growing pigs diets with 20% Jack Beans (Canavalia ensiformis L.) toasted under various conditions of temperature and time. Ninety six pigs (16kg average BW) were employed in both trials. In Experiment 1, three diets were tested: a Control diet (C); C+20% Jack Beans (JB) toasted at 177ºC/25min; and C+ 20% JB toasted at 187ºC/15min. Experiment 2 evaluated the same C diet; C+20% JB (184ºC/20min); C+20%JB (194º/18min), and C+20%JB (198ºC/14.5min).Forty eight pigs (24 castrated males and 24 females) were used in each trial. The experimental period lasted 7 days. Raw and toasted JB were analyzed for canavanine, haemagglutinin activity (HA), reactive lysine , proximal composition and cell wall components. Data indicated that HA was completely abolished by toasting whereas canavanine content was reduced by 45.2% following toasting at 177ºC/25min and up to 95% at 194º/18min. Reactive lysine was also reduced. Toasting marked increased crude fiber content and NDF/FDA fractions. Pig performance varied depending upon the severity of the toasting conditions but only the diet with 20% JB toasted at 194º/18min showed no significant differences (P<0,05) in feed intake and gain weight as compared with the C diet. In summary, this short term study indicates the potential of the toasting procedure as a means to improve the nutritive value of JB for pig diets.
