In order to determine the hematological characteristics that could be used to diagnose the health condition, there were examined 30 specimens of cachama of each one of this categories: breeder, juvenile and alevins; respectively, kept up in conditions of captivity, in lagoons of the Experimental Station of Delta Amacuro. For the hematologic analysis, the samples from juvenile and breeders were taken through puncture of the caudal vein, and those from the alevins were taken through cuts of the caudal peduncle. There were determined the values of hematocrite, hemoglobin, the recount of erythrocytes and leukocytes; and also were calculated the hematimetric indexs: medium corpuscular volume, medium corpuscular hemoglobin and concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin .The analysis and interpretation of the results were realized by descriptive statistics, and the comparison between the quantified variables in the blood by the test of t-student, between the categories of size of the studied specie. The test of t showed differences for the hematocrite and hemoglobin variables between alevins-juvenil and alevins- breeders, but there were not differences between juvenile and breeders. There were not found differences for the variavel concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin. The values of hemoglobin and hematocrite for alevins ranged between 28.58-31.16 and 9.51-10.37 g/dL, respectively, whereas the values for juveniles ranged between 30.70-32.84% and 10.77-12.15 g/dL. The values for breeder ranged between 30.66-36.74% and 10.77-12.15 g/dL. For the juvenile and adults of cachama, in the conditions of captivity, the index of concentration of the medium corpuscular hemoglobin presented itself as a characteristic of great reliability for the condition of blood quality. Their values were between 33.27 and 33.34 g/dL. The obtained results allow to visualize the potential use of the values of the hematocrite, hemoglobin and concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin as indicators of the corporeal condition of alevins, juvenile and adults of cachama in lagoon conditions.
At “La Esperanza” farm of the University of Zulia, located in Zulia state, Venezuela, 24 non-pregnant predominantly Holstein crossbred cows in the first 45 to 60 days of their third or fourth lactation were used to evaluate the effect of substituting 50 to 75% of concentrate feed (C) with 17% crude protein by grazing of a leucaena bank during 2 h/day (LB) on milk production and properties and liveweight (LW) gain. There were used 12 cows in the dry (DS) and wet (WS) season, respectively. The treatments during DS were: T1: 1 kg of C/cow/day + LB; T2: 2 kg of C/cow/day + LB, and T3: 4 kg of C/cow/day. An additional treatment T4, 2 kg of C/cow/day + LB during 2 h on alternate days, was evaluated during WS. A switch-back design was used in both seasons, with four (DS) and three (WS) cows per treatment and three 4-week periods. Basal diets were Brachiaria humidicola hay (DS) and grazing on Panicum maximum (WS) plus water and minerals ad libitum. Milk productions (kg/cow/d) for T2 (10.5 and 10.8) and T3 (10.8 and 11.1) were higher (P≤0.05) than those for T1 (9.9 and 9.7) in DS and WS, respectively. During WS, T4 (10.2 kg/cow/d) was higher than T1, but similar to T2 and T3. Treatments were similar (P>0.05) for LW gain (360 and 423 g/cow/d), milk fat (3.5 and 3.6%), and protein content (3.3 and 3.4%), acidity (16.5 and 16.6 mL NaOH 0.1N/100 mL) nor density (1.030 and 1.029 g/mL) during DS and WS, respectively. Evaluation of the cutting frequency and fertilization types on three elephant grass genotypes (Pennisetum purpureum). 1.
In order to evaluate the effect of the cutting frequency and types of nitrogen fertilization on three elephant grass genotypes, a field trial was carried in the Universidad de Los Andes farm, in El Vigia, Merida state, Venezuela, located at 67 masl. A random bocks design with three replications was used; treatments were two cutting frequencies (F1: 49 and F2: 63 days), three genotypes (G1: Taiwan A-146, G2: Morado, and G3: Maralfalfa) and three types of fertilization (N1: cow manure, equivalent to 91 kg N/ha/year, N2 and N3 urea with 343 and 686 kg N/ha/year). The FxG interaction was significant over pasture yield (TDM) and crude protein (CP). Yields were 40.9, 29.7, and 37.7 t DM/ha/year for G1, G2, and G3, respectively. Dry Matter (DM%) content was different (P< 0.01) for FxG, with higher values obtained at F2 (21.5%) and G1 (20.4%). Crude protein content decreased with the regrowth age, and the relation CP = 17.7 - 0.18 x F(days) was estimated. It was concluded that higher yields were obtained with Taiwán A-146 and Maralfalfa with F2 and N2, while high CP content was obtained with Morado elephant grass and F1.
With the objective to determine the potential yield of the mulberry variety Tigreada, two pruning heights (50 and 100 cm) and two cutting frequencies (45 and 90 days) were studied, by using of a completely randomized design at the Experimental Station of Pastures and Forages "Indio Hatuey", Cuba. The agronomic variables: dry matter yield of total biomass (TB), dry matter yield of edible biomass (EB), dry matter yield of leaves biomass (LB), and dry matter yield of fresh stems biomass (FSB) were evaluated in the rainy (RS) and dry seasons (DS) in a year of exploitation of the crop. The height by frequency interaction was significant (P<0.05); the highest values in TB were found when cutting the plant every 90 days and at 50 cm of height in the RS (134.72 g DM/plant). The interactions found in the FSB were mainly determined by the more intense pruning and the lower pruning height, and up to 13.62 g DM/plant was obtained. The cutting height showed a significant effect on TB in the DS and on LB in both periods. The highest plant production was obtained with the lowest pruning height. It is concluded that, in general, for the variables studied there was a significant interaction cutting height and frequency. With 90 days and 50 cm of pruning height, acceptable dry matter yields were achieved. An accentuated difference in terms of dry matter production was found, when mulberry it was exploited with the lowest pruning height.
Agroforestry systems are an alternative to obtain a sustainable land use. The initial step in research in these systems is the selection of the experimental sites, which must be very well characterized to evaluate the relationships among the components of the system. The objective of this study was to use Ikonos satellite imagery: 1) to delimit the experimental plots and 2) to evaluate the spatial pattern of the arboreal cover.
The study was carried out at the Faculty de Agronomy of Universidad Central de Venezuela. There were evaluated 88 gilts of the Camborough 22 genetic line during the gestation and lactation, which were maintained individually in four types of lodgings: cages with solid floor, corrals with solid concrete floor, deep bedding, and field that constituted the treatments. The evaluation was made every 15 days (September to March) by 14 weeks. The degree of damage was measured with a scale of measurement from 1 to 5, being 1 the worst and 5 the best. The results were added to obtain another scale from 1 to 20, in which different analyses were made. In order to measure the effect of treatment and week of evaluation, a variance analysis was made following a multinomial distribution. The sows maintained in corrals with concrete floor and cages with solid floor presented the highest values of damages in the helmets (50.6 and 43.3%, respectively), in comparison to the females lodged in field and deep bedding (P<0.05). The damage on the helmets considered as severe did not appear in any of the treatments (P>0.05); the slight damage showed a probability of occurrence of 3.1% in all the lodgings (P<0.05), whereas the damage called as excellent was 59.3% (P<0.05). It is concluded that sows lodged in corrals with concrete floor and cages with solid floor suffered more damages in the helmets that the sows lodged in deep bedding and field, but with lower degree of affectation in all the cases Effect of antihelmintic and antianemic treatments on gain weight and haemato chemical indicators in tropical sheep infected under natural conditions http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692007000400007&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Reconociendo la importancia de las infecciones por estróngilos digestivos como limitante de la explotación de pequeños rumiantes, se planteó un estudio cuyo objetivo fue conocer el efecto que el tratamiento simultáneo antihelmíntico y antianémico puede ejercer sobre la ganancia de peso, valores hematológicos y algunos indicadores de química sanguínea.
Recognizing the relevance of the infections by digestive estrongile as a limiting factor to the exploitation of small ruminants, it was planned a study to evaluate the effect of that a anthelmintic and antianemic simultaneous treatment might exert on the gain weight, hematological values, and some indicators of blood chemistry. Forty West African cross breed sheep with a weight average of 22.2 kg and 19.2 months old, were raised under an agroforestry system and infected under natural conditions. During the intermediate rainfall time, the sheep were evaluated every 15 days during four months and the following items recorded: strongylid egg per gram counts (epg), daily gain weight (DGW), haematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), total proteins (PT), albumin, and globulins. During the fourth sampling it was applied simultaneously an anthelmintic and antianemic treatment. The results showed a high effectiveness of the product (95.7%) when compared before (BT) and after treatment (AT). The DGW was significantly higher after the treatment application (P<0.05). The observed values BT of Ht and Hb were compatible with anemia, but these values were increased in AT sheep (P<0.001). The PT in BT was attributable to a protein deficit in the diet, associated with a reduced appetite which is common in strongylid infestation process. No significantly differences were observed in the values of globulins, indicating a moderate humoral response.
In order to determine the effect of different phosphorus sources on growth, bone mineralization, and phosphorus retention in birds, 440 male chicks of the commercial hybrid Cobb x Cobb, one day born, fed up to the fourth week on age, were distributed in five treatments, in a completely randomized design, using a factorial arrangement 5 x 2 (5 phosphorus sources, 2 levels of phosphorus additions), with four replications with 10 birds each. Phosphorus sources were calcinated bone (HHC), a fertilizer, triple superphosphate (SFT), and three raw rock phosphates, Riecito (RIO), Lizardo (LIZA), and Jají (JAJI). Phosphates were added to a basal diet (0.35% P) at two phosphorus levels (0.25 and 0.50%). Diets contained 3,100 kcal ME/kg, 23.5% CP, with a constant calcium level (1%). Body weight and feed intake were measured. Four birds per treatment were sacrificed to take both tibias to determine density, ash, and phosphorus. A balance technique was used to determine phosphorus net retention and utilization efficiency. Body weight (g/bird) at 0.25 and 0.50% P levels was greater (P<0.05) for SFT, followed by HHC, intermediate for RIO and JAJI and lower for LIZA, with values of 813 and 805, 747 and 745, 436 and 760, 393 and 661 and, 286 and 415, respectively, for treatments and levels. RIO phosphate was similar to HHC and SFT when added at 0.50% phosphorus level. Differences between levels were significant (P<0.05) only for sedimentary phosphates. Feed intake and feed efficiency showed similar tendency in relation to body weight. Bone ash content (%) for 0.25 and 0.50% added phosphorus, was higher (P< 0,05) for SFT followed by HHC, RIO, LIZA and JAJI, with values of 40.7 and 45.5, 38.7 and 43.7, 36.8 and 42.4, 35.0 and 40.1, and 33.2 and 38.2, respectively for phosphates and levels. Bone ash content expressed in mg/cm3 presented similar tendency to the percent expression. There were not differences in bone phosphorus content and values ranged were between 16.8 and 18.5%. Apparent phosphorus net retention (%) for 0.25 and 0.50% added phosphorus was greater (P<0.05) for SFT, followed by HHC, RIO, and LIZA and lower for JAJI, with values 76.4 and 73.7, 71.8 and 69.3, 71.5 and 65.5, 69.4 and 66.2, and 62.7 and 58.6%, respectively for the same order of treatments and levels. Phosphorus utilization efficiency (%) was greater for SFT (66.7) and HHC (63.1), followed by RIO (61.5) and LIZA (62.0) and lower for JAJI (57.0). It is concluded that sedimentary phosphates had variable limitations, depending upon deposit origin, for growing chicks feeding and that absorption measures showed similar tendency as body weight and bone mineralization, in relation to a better response for SFT, followed of HHC, RIO, LIZA and JAJI Evaluation of two probiotics upon productive parameters in suckling piglets http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692007000400009&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Se realizó un experimento para evaluar el efecto de dos tratamientos sobre el peso corporal al destete (PCD) y la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP) en 194 lechones Yorkshire x Pietrain y Landrace x Pietrain en una granja comercial del estado Zulia, Venezuela.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two treatments on body weigh at weaning (BWW) and average daily gain (ADG). In this trial were used 194 Yorkshire x Pietrain and Landrace x Pietrain piglets, in a commercial farm in Zulia state, Venezuela. Experimental units were randomly and distributed in two treatment groups, control (C) and experimental treatment (E). The first of them was represented by a commercial probiotic (Lactobacillus reuferill, L. lactis, L. acidophillus, L. casei, Pediococcus acidilacti; Streptococcus termophillus, and S. faecium) with addition of vitamin B12, copper, inmunoglobulins, and triglycerides selectioneers. The experimental treatment (E) was represented by fermented milk, which number of lactic bacteria was log UCF/g of 7.48. A completely random experimental design, with one independent variable (Treatment) was used, and each sow was nested into treatments. The body weight and daily weight gain were reported as dependent variables. Data was analyzed using GLM procedures of SAS. There were no significant effects (P>0.05) between treatments. The results suggest that the use of handmade fermented milk could be a good alternative to achieve good average daily gain at weaning decreasing the diarrhea rate in sucking piglets Masculinization in three strains of Nile tilapia using the synthetic androgen 17-á-methyl-testosterone http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692007000400010&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a masculinização de pós-larvas de três linhagens de tilápias do Nilo tailandesa 1 (LT-1), tailandesa 2 (LT-2) e linhagem local (LL).
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the masculinization of post-fry in three strains of Nile tilapia: thai strain 1 (TS-1), thai strain 2 (TS-2), and local strain (LS). Fishes were fed using a ration containing 60 mg of 17-á-methyiltestosterone/kg for 28 days, and biometric parameters were obtained at 7-days intervals. Later, it was observed the percentage of males and mortality. There was no significant differences on growth and male percentage (97.1±1.4%, 98.10±2.1%, 99.05±0.8% for TS-1, TS-2, and LS, respectively), although the mortality was higher for LS (52.8±7,5%) when compared to LT-1 (20.8±2.6%) and LS-2 (20.8±3.6%). These data suggest the utilization of LT-1 e LT-2.
