We present in this paper the first results of on-going research aimed at studying the cultural representations that shaped the concept and practices related to feminine honor in the city of Maracaibo an the end of the XIXth century, considering the same as a privileged means to achieve a deeper understanding of this society. From the theoretical and methodological points of view, honor is approached as a notion related to both collective identities and personal identity, through the analysis of a series of lawsuits dealing with promises of marriage kept at the Civil Registrars Office in Zulia State. It was found that honor was an important element in the construction of personal identity and in social differentiation, incarnating a sense of virtue and a sense of social reputation. We conclude that the Maracaibo residents involved in the cases studies seemed to share the symbolic codes expressed in the official discourse of cultural unity and national identity, addressed at “regenerating” the Venezuelan society and at protecting the family as the basis of society, making the honor-virtue of women, particularly their sexual honor, the moral foundation of the family.
The universality of interdictions and the almost similarity from one society to another suggest that cultural codes are sexually distinct based on roles and functions of man and woman. Not a single society has known a fixed sexual morality which on the contrary seems to change regarding historical circumstances. Every individual is subject to his or her culture which he or her auto reproduces without realizing it. From the first steps into sexuality to an adult and active sexual life, individuals react regarding their specific roles and social frames. Sexual initiation is much ritualized in Venezuela and contains family’s honour as well as the social status of the individual. In France, it’s personal and private and only concerns the individual. Despite all this, the first sexual experience is an obliged passage experienced as a love act or as an initiation act. We shall see that depending on gender and social class, the conditions of the first sexual experience’s advent follow different schemes.
This paper attempts to describe, from the typological perspective, the structure of coordination in Yukpa, a Venezuelan Caribbean language spoken by approximately 4.000 people in the west of Venezuela, specifically in the Perija Mountain Range in Zulia State. It is based on the definitions of Sanders (1974), Mallinson and Blake (1981) and the typology of Haspelmath (2000,2004). As supports to the study of the coordination in Carribbean languages we also considered Hall (1988), Monsonyi & Monsonyi (2000), Gutiérrez (2001), Chavier (2005) and Sousa (2005); concerning the Yukpa, Vegamián (1978), Obregón & Armato (1986) and Niño (1999). To obtain the proposed objective 80 sentences were reviewed as to conjunctive, disjunctive, adversative and causal coordinates. It was found that this language uses as conjunctive coordinators etet, etperat, eterat and the suffix -rat. The FNs and the FVs unite by way of any of these elements; the clauses, on their part, prefer the suffix -rat. As disjunctive coordinators we have waipo -rat and vepo-rat and as causal coordinator ishi. The use of the particle -rat is a common strategy to express the conjunctive, disjunctive and adversative coordinates. Changes in the Cultural Distances Between Countries: An Analysis of Hofstede’s Culture Dimensions http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1012-15872007000100007&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en En los setenta, Hofstede (1980) identificó y cuantificó cuatro dimensiones de la cultura nacional.
In the seventies, Hofstede (1980) identified and quantified four dimensions of the national culture. Two decades later, Fernández et al. (1997) quantified these four dimensions using a different scale (Dorfman and Howell, 1988). Hofstede proposes that economic, demographic and geographic variables, among others, can affect these dimensions. Consequently, one would expect the cultural distances between countries not to be static. In order to verify this hypothesis, a standardized index of cultural distance was used in both studies (Kogut and Singh, 1988). Subsequently, multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used to represent these distances. The analyses performed confirmed the research hypothesis.
