The aggregate of meanings and signifiers in a magazine has the purpose of communicating a message and expressing an emotion determined by the intention and subjective practice of the editor-designer. Among the responsibilities of this arranger of visual elements -graphics and photographs- the designer brings to bear his aesthetic experience in defining the selection of images to create visual discourse and the receiver’s consequent reading of it. Connotation of the photographic code is constructed starting with selection of the object to be captured by the camera and continues through the manipulation or alteration of the image. The selection and repetition of determined visual variables define their artistic qualities; today, the authorship of graphic designers and photographers is valued.
Gender studies award language, and consequently, discourse analysis, an important position because through them we build representations of events, societies and even our own character, shaping ourselves as subjects and helping us establish our own identities (Caldas Coulthard and Rojo, 1997). The field of study composed of sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics and critical discourse analysis, coupled with feminist studies, pays special attention to the analysis of discourse in women’s magazines because they are social circulation agents presenting representations of women. In the ‘90s, the Argentinean women’s magazine Para Ti published biographical accounts portraying supposedly real women, in which motherhood appeared to be associated with self-fulfillment, and it built a discourse around these stories that promoted attitudes and positioning. The aim of this study is to describe the different modes of representing maternity in these personal accounts and to reflect on the imagined social situations they create and disseminate through the magazine, based on the concept that identity is a construction of a social nature (Castoriadis, 2001) and that our society organizes the universe of meanings about womanhood around the Woman=Mother equation (Fernández, 1994).
This paper seeks to establish a conceptual bridge between chaos theory and linguistics, a field that has been unwilling to accept this new paradigm. It explains that this situation is due principally to the influential work of F. de Saussure, impregnated with positivist linguistic doctrine. Nevertheless, based on concrete examples, the paper shows that an interdisciplinary perspective makes it possible to discern manifestations of chaos laws in language. Conclusions are that, notwithstanding differences, it is possible to visualize language as a chaotic system and thus interrelate these two apparently incompatible areas of knowledge.
This study is oriented by presuppositions about linguistic planning and is exploratory, descriptive and documental in nature. It succinctly reviews the current diverse situations of the indigenous and deaf communities in Venezuela, in the light of the 1999 constitutional text and the political, educational, social and linguistic reality of each group, to try to explain why marginalization and exclusion are still constants. From the theoretical viewpoint, the study proposes a re-conceptualization of communicative competence, the initial theoretical objective of education, which becomes essential for developing a communicative and above all, a democratic culture, the final aim that integrates all others. Results show that besides the disparity in political and social considerations, both communities require priority in educational services centered on a review of the interculturality concept, and therefore of bilingualism, in a new ideological framework that does not put the need for building a multiethnic and pluricultural society aside. This study will serve as a basic component for developing programs and projects oriented toward integrating minority groups.
This study analyzes informative strategies used by a regional newspaper for scientific journalism. Among the theoretical bases for this interpretation are Manuel Calvo (1992) of the Spanish Association of Scientific Journalism and Ferrer, Argelia (2003). The research experience used a documentary investigative procedure, drawing up a study of the discourse printed on the Science and Arts page of the daily newspaper, La Verdad. Results show that the aforementioned newspaper does not take on all scientific themes, but only those related to health and education. The greater percentage of the total coverage on the page is dedicated to publicity, and in the information dedicated to spreading science, few visual resources are used.
The centaur of Greek mythology and the biographical summary of General Páez’s warlike feats contributed to an analogical interpretation of the symbolism of the Centaur of the Plains. Results show the use of this metaphor and that of the Iberian Lion to split the population into Americans and Spaniards and give the war for independence the character of an international war, when the American nation (Gran Colombia) did not yet exist. The metaphor of the centaur of the plains combined the foundational myths of western culture with the symbolic codes of the plainsmen and converted it into a foundational symbol for the Venezuelan nation.
This study developed some theoretical, methodological and practical proposals for analyzing the meanings and aesthetic dimensions of speeches, whose most outstanding manifestations are in literary texts. In the elegies selected for investigation, some metaphors, visionary images and synesthesia were studied, grouped into domains of experience and lexical fields, using analytic instruments taken from aesthetics, semantics and linguistic pragmatics. This approach makes it possible to present as results the tension of causal and determinist forces between life and death, and at the same time, due to its intentionality and literary mediation, send us back to possible worlds of symbolic imagination, poetic liberation and aesthetic pleasure.
The present work tries to understand the problem of scientific explanation, centering on one of the models that has been gradually monopolizing the attention of most philosophers of science: the pragmatic model of Bas Van Fraassen. The most relevant aspects of this model will be examined in order to define what a “correct explanation" is, as well as his disagreements with attempts to propose a universally valid schematic model for explaining all the sciences.
