Oil production in Venezuela has generated a variety of environmental impacts, including contamination of ecosystems and land under agricultural use. In order to establish the impact of oil contamination on the germination of Megathyrsus maximus and Urochloa brizantha, two tropical pastures used as fodder, short-term toxicity bioassays were performed in which seeds of both grasses were exposed to soil contaminated with increasing concentrations of four crude oils with different API gravity. Crude oils were extra heavy crude (9.3 ° API), heavy crude (12.1 ° API), medium crude (27.0 ° API) and light crude (30 ° API). At the end of the trial the germination percentage of seeds, radicle elongation and germination index were evaluated. The results showed that a) with the increase of the crude concentration decreased the number of germinated seeds, radicle elongation and germination index, b) as the API gravity decreased, the seeds achieved germination at higher concentrations of the crude oil, c) for the same type and concentration of crude, both species presented a response similar in germination percentage, radicle elongation and germination index, and d) EC50 were higher and similar between extra heavy and heavy crude, and smaller and similar between medium and light crude, confirming that the former are the less toxic crudes.
In maize, studies on the importance of epistasis in the inheritance of quantitative traits have shown contradictory results; therefore, is of great importance to determine the influence of epistatic effects involved in the inheritance of these characters in the crop. Thus, this research was conducted to (a) to verify the presence of epistasis, (b) to verify the importance of epistasis by environment interaction and (c) to estimate epistatic effects in plants F2 for grain yield and plant traits using the triple test cross design in a tropical maize population developed from two inbred lines genetically divergent. One hundred F2:3 progenies backcrossed to both parental lines and F1 were evaluated in eleven environments. Epistasis was detected for all traits, except for root and stalk lodging. For grain yield, plant height and anthesis-silking interval the additive x dominance and/or dominance x dominance epistasis were more important than additive x additive epistasis; however, for ear height, ear placement, days to anthesis and days to silk emergence, both types of epistasis were important. Epistasis by environment interaction was significant for days to silk emergence and anthesis-silking interval. Significant epistatic non-unidirectional effects were identified in F2 plants for all traits. The results suggest that, in the studied population, epistasis is an important component of genetic variance; therefore, the dominant additive model is not sufficient to describe the genetic variation of the studied traits.
Wrinklegrass (Ischaemum rugosum Salisb), is a weed very difficult to control in Venezuelan rice fields. The purpose of this study was to assess the bispyribac-sodium mechanisms of resistance in accessions of I. rugosum and its pattern of cross-resistance with others ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Three experiments were established: (1) Bioassays on synergism between bispyribac-sodium and malathion, (2) ALS activity and (3) Cross-resistance patterns bioassays. The first experiment corresponded to dose response bioassays, using the resistant (R) accessions: IR90G, IR269P and IR301CO, exposed to increasing doses of bispyribac-sodium alone and 1000 g·ha-1 a.i. of malathion applied 24 hours before (0; 5; 10; 20; 40; 80; 160 and 320 g·ha-1 a.i.) and the susceptible (S) accession IR143G (0; 0.312; 0.625; 1.25; 2.5; 5; 10 and 20 g·ha-1 a.i.). In the second experiment, plant tissue extracts from both R and S accessions were incubated with concentrations of 0, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 nM of bispyribac sodium, and in the third one were applied the recommended dosages indicated in the labels of the following herbicides; bispyribac-sodium (PTB), imazethapyr + imazapyr (IMI); nicosulfuron (SU) and penoxsulam (TP) at 40; 154; 30 and 60 g·ha-1 a.i., respectively. The results showed that the IR269P accession has two bispyribac sodium resistance mechanisms; by the alteration of the herbicide active site and a mechanism outside the site of action, a metabolic degradation mediated by the enzyme P450. It was determined that the bispyribac-sodium resistance displayed by the accessions IR90G and IR301CO is due to the alteration of the site of action of ALS.
It is estimated that Ecuador has a production area over 3500 ha of tree tomato. These production areas have been established due to the high demand for this fruit; however production levels have been affected by pests and poor nutrition of the crop. This research evaluated the efficiency of the use of native mycorrhizae in developing of seedlings of cujacu (Solanum hispidium) and tabaquillo (Nicotiana glauca) which are used as rootstocks for tree tomato. In the country there are no records about management, uses and benefits of inoculating arbuscular mycorrhizae in those species. Sampling of soil and roots were carried out in four sites where grafted tomato tree is grown by using the mentioned rootstocks. The best results about number of spores and percentage of root colonization were showed by soils from Mindo and Mitad del Mundo localities. In the aforementioned soils, the highest percentages of root colonization in trap plants were found, and increases of 145 and 127% in the amount of phosphorus in the plant tissue were obtained, respectively, in relation to the control (sterile sand). Likewise, the highest root colonization occurred in inoculated seedlings of cujacu and tabaquillo in which the phosphorus concentration showed a respective increase of 39 and 33%, on average for the soils of Mindo and Mitad del Mundo The commercial control (Glomus sp.) showed an acceptable performance; however, it always was lower as compared to the results from the inoculum of native strains.
Over time, agricultural communities in periurban areas suffer reductions in crop area and changes in agricultural activity and land tenure. The objective if this study was to compare based on variables of agricultural activity and demographic characteristics two farming communities located closed to urban centers. Two groups of farmers from communities surrounding the so-called Camino de Los Españoles, but located on different hillsides of the mountain that conforms the Waraira Repano National Park, in the central region of Venezuela, were selected. The data were obtained from a survey applied to 69 farmers, 30 of the northern hillside and 39 of the southern hillside. The results reveal that in the group of the southern hillside, nearest to the main urban center of the area, is lower the percentage of individuals who have resided during all his life in the community (59 vs. 83.3%), who practice agriculture as exclusive job (54 vs. 83%) and who produce for sale (71.1 vs. 96.6%), but the percentage with agricultural financing is higher (27 vs. 10.3%). The median size of their farmland is significantly lower (0.15 vs. 0.51 ha) but the profile of agricultural products of this group is more heterogeneous. It is argued that these differences may be the result of the greater urban influence to which the farm community of the southern hillside has been exposed.
Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is an important pest in onion culture of Lara State, Venezuela, which makes it necessary to have instruments that allow its accurate monitoring. In this research, geostatistics was used for the study of the spatial distribution of the insect in order to provide information for the establishment of management programs in onion culture. The crop cycle corresponding to March-June 2015 was evaluated in Quíbor, Lara State, in a 5 ha onion field, Campo Lindo variety, where 56 sampling points were located 25 m apart. Each point was georeferenced in UTM coordinates, Regven system. Eleven samples were taken with a weekly frequency, and 5 plants per point were selected in each sampling to evaluate the number of insects per plant. To determine the spatial distribution, the ArcGIS version 9.3 program and the Kriging interpolation method were used. Predictive maps were used to determine insecticide applications according to the pest distribution pattern. The structural analysis showed that all the samples were adjusted to the exponential theoretical model, and the spatial dependence of the data was high in almost all samplings. The distribution pattern of onion thrips was found to be aggregated, so the management of insecticide applications should be performed in the insect clustering foci.
Edible coatings constitute a potential strategy to reduce the harmful effects caused by minimal processing on sliced fresh fruits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cactus mucilage as edible coatings on some physic-chemical and sensory parameters of cut pineapple fruit. The edible coating was prepared with mucilage at 10 and 20 % (w/v). The fruits were treated with sodium hypochlorite, cut into 1 cm thick slices, immersed in solutions of mucilage for 1 min, and stored at 6 ± 1 °C for 7 days. A control group immersed in distilled water was used. Five replications per treatment were analyzed after 3, 5 and 7 days storage. The parameters evaluated were loss weight, firmness, pH, total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), ascorbic acid and dry matter percentage. Sensory evaluation was performed at 7th day of storage. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan test, while Friedman nonparametric test was used to analyze the sensory evaluation. The coated samples differed significantly (P≤0.05) in the ATT, SST, and ascorbic acid. Further, the coating showed to be effective in retarding the weight loss and firmness. Sensory analysis revealed that the judges had preference for coated samples at the end of storage for taste, color, texture and appearance attributes. It is concluded that coating with cactus mucilage helped to reduce the detrimental effects caused by minimal processing on fresh cut pineapple.
The inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a simple and sustainable practice that promotes growth and nutrition of plants. The objective was to evaluate the effect of AMF and cattle manure (C) on the initial growth and pigment contents in “Misterioso” chilli (Capsicum frutescens). Five treatments were evaluated: plants cultivated in sand (T1), T1+C (T2), T1+Scutellospora fulgida (T3), T1+Funneliformis mosseae (T4), and T1+Glomus manihotis (T5). A completely randomized design with ten replications was used. After 55 days from transplant the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization (PMC), plant height (PH), number of leaves and nodes (NL, NN), root length (RL), dry biomass of roots and aerial part (DBR, DBA), proportion root-aerial part dry biomass (PRADB), leaf area (LA) and index (LAI), content of chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids, were determined. The statistical analysis showed significant differences for all the studied variables by effect of the treatments. The best response was obtained in T4 for most of the variables, except NL, NN, LA and LAI, followed by T3 and T2. The treatment T2 was superior in LA, ILA, FBA, and also recorded the largest PH, NL, NN, RL, FBP, DBA and DBP, except pigments. It is concluded that treatments with F. mosseae (PMC=58.47 %), S. fulgida (PMC=26.31 %), and the use of cattle manure influenced positively in the initial growth of the plants. Chemical control of Pteridium esculentum (G.Forst.)
The effectiveness of metsulfuron-methyl (10 g·ha-1) glyphosate (4 L·ha-1), metsulfuron-methyl + glyphosate (10 g·ha-1 + 4 L·ha-1), picloram + 2,4-D amine (1.5 L·ha-1) herbicides, and manual control (cutting) was evaluated on the regrowth, leaf damage and aerial biomass of P. esculentum fern in cattle production unit located at 1,229 masl in Bolivar Municipality, Yaracuy State. An area of 720 m² set for grazing, with a predominance of guinea grass (P. maximum) and high incidence of fern (12±4 fronds/m²) was selected. Each product was applied manually in 180 m² plots and the effect was monitored at 30, 60 and 90 days post-application. The metsulfuron-methyl showed high efficiency by reducing regrowth after 90 days, inducing foliar injury of 76.3 % at 60 days and decreasing fern leaf biomass by 88.3 %. Combining glyphosate + metsulfuron-methyl caused further damage to the fronds (81.4 %), while the picloram + 2,4-D amine was effective in delaying the regrowth although it showed low residual effect. It was observed that glyphosate, alone, has a low residual effect on the fern, but significantly affected the forage supply. In conclusion, because of its efficiency, the rational use of metsulfuron-methyl incorporated into the integrated management of fern, is a good alternative to maximize control of this invasive plant in pastures of highland livestock systems.
