The red rice, Oryza sativa L., causes severe losses in the production chain of this crop in Venezuela, mainly in the seed production, where the quality standard doesnot allow more than 2 grains of red rice (RR) perkilogram of certificated seed. The objective of this workwas to characterize morpho-physiologically the genotypes of RR found in seed lots subject to certification located in Portuguesa State. In this investigationthere were characterized plants that were originated ofrice caryopsis that showed red pericarp, found in seed lots subject to certification and were comparedagainst the varieties of rice FONAIAP 1, Fedearroz 50, D-Sativa; ZETA 15® and Cimarron. Seventeen (17) characteristics of morphology of the plant and grainswere evaluated, and a descriptive statistical analysis toeach variable was made. We found that 85% of the evaluated RR showed straw color glumes, 73% did notshow awn; 75% showed medium and large grain sizeas rice varieties; however, the grains of RR were morewidth than rice varieties. We also found that 58% of the RR had erect growth habit and position of the flagleaf; the flowering, Nº tillers plant-1 and Nº paniclesplant-1 were similar to rice varieties, although there wasa lot variation between them. The Nº grains pl-1 was variable, but of very importance due to the highproduction of some genotypes joined to great percentof shattering. The major RR evaluated in this workprobably are evolving to mimetic forms called the Weedy rice-variety types (WRVT).
Red rice (RR) continues to be a serious threat to rice seed production, Oryza sativa L. The objetive of this work was to classify RR coming from lots where certified rice is grown, according to their affinity with the varieties of rice FONAIAP 1, FEDEARROZ 50, D-Sativa; ZETA 15® and Cimarrón. Some morphologic characteristics of the plant and grain were evaluated following rice variety descriptor, using Multivariate analysis for principal component and Hierarchical clustering (Euclidian distance). The cluster analysis showed that 7 group were formed. The first four of them corresponded to 32 RR and 1 wild rice (Oryza rufipogon), which could be easily distinguished from the varieties. The last three groups had 15 RR that could be considered as weedy rice-variety types due to their affinities with the varieties evaluated in this study. Due to its great similarity in plant height and flowering time with rice varieties, it is considered that 29 RR (60.41%) included in the groups I and III, could be evolving towards Weedy rice-variety types. Only 8.33% of RR had substantial differences in morphologic characteristics with the rice varieties evaluated.
Saline-sodic soils, which are rich in salts and sodium, are degraded soils common in zones from subhumid toarid climates. This study was carried out to identifyfactors and processes related with the genesis, undernatural conditions, of a saline-sodic soil (Sodic Haplusterts, fine, smectitic, isohyperthermic) in Tucupido(Guárico-Venezuela), under a semiarid climate. Therewere evaluated morphological, physical, chemical andmineralogical characteristics and properties of the soil. The pH, exchangeable sodium, and electric conductivity(saturation extract) varied between 7.55-8.4; 2-32% and1.0-8.7 dS m-1 respectively. NaCl was the dominantsalt (> 66% below 0.1-m depth). Bulk density, macroporosity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity varied from 1.8 to 2.2 Mg m-3, 4 to 5% and 3x10-7 to 1x10-5 m s-1, respectively. Smectites were the dominating clays, butchlorites and hydrated micas there were present too.High quantities of Ca- and Mg-carbonates were alsofound precipitated in the soil (18%). The conclusionwas that these soils were probably formed by alterationof calcareous shales, formed in sedimentary environments in contact with saline waters rich in sodium, to produce saline-sodic soils during the arid phase at theend of the Pleistocene period. The very low permeabilityof these soils limited salts washing during the wetterHolocene period. High electric conductivities probablywould allow the collapse of interlayer space ofsmectites, and the high content of Ca-carbonates the production of Ca-Al silicate compounds which couldbe acting as cementing agents in the interlayer space ofsmectites, and these processes probably could preventedthe increase of the exchangeable Na% in the soil tovalues higher than 32%. Carrizo (CAR), Troyer (TRO) y Uvalde (UVA), mandarino Cleopatra (CLE) Citrus reshni ex Hort.
In 1976 was found for the first time in Venezuela the citrus tristeza virus transmitter, the Toxoptera citricida Kirk., and in 1979 occurs the first outbreak by the death of trees. All of those successes brought about the introduction of different Citrus cultivars to be evaluated as rootstocks. However, little is known about the fruit characteristics of the introduced rootstocks. The objective of this work was to study the fruit characteristics of eight Citrus rootstocks: Citrus volkameriana Pasq. (VOL), the citrumelos Poncirus trifoliate Raf. x Citrus paradisi Macf. Swingle (SWI) and Yuma (YUM), the citranges Poncirus trifoliate Raf. x Citrus sinensis Osb. Carrizo (CAR), Troyer (TRO) and Uvalde (UVA), Cleopatra mandarin (CLE), Citrus reshni ex Hort. Tan., and Citremon 1449 (CIT) Poncirus trifoliate Raf. x Citrus limon L. There were selected five trees for each rootstock of uniform size and vigor. From each tree ten fruits were harvested in a randomize form, and we measured the mean weight, distal and equatorial fruit diameter, thickness of rind and number of seeds. In addition, it was calculated the distal/equatorial relation, mean seed number by fruit in a 100 g and a kilogram base, and seed weight. In this paper it is shown the characteristics of the fruits of the evaluated rootstocks.
The genealogy of 19 varieties of irrigated rice, Oryza sativa L., liberated in Venezuela during the years 19782006, were analyzed with the objective to determine the number of ancestors present, also to estimate its relative genetic contribution. The results indicated that the majority (56%) of the ancestors were originated in Asia, while the ones of American and African origin provided 10% each one. The pedigree analysis showed that 59 ancestors contributed with 99,99% of the genetic base and only 5 ancestors are present in all the varieties studied, with a genetic accumulated contribution (CGA) of 51,89%. When the genetic base of rice in Venezuela is analyzed, only 16 ancestors lines possesses a CGA of 80,47%. If the material that contributed with more than 2% of the genes are considered, this number is reduced to 12 ancestors and its CGA is of 74,48%. The results allow to infer that the genetic base of rice in Venezuela is more stretch than that of Latin America and similar to that of irrigate rice in Brazil. It is recommended to increase the genetic base of the Venezuelan varieties, which will allow, in the short and middle time, to win in selection, in addition to avoid possible genetic vulnerability. This information is of great importance because it allows to address future crossing in the breeding program of rice in Venezuela.
Five Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cultivars with different tolerance to aluminum toxicity were evaluated. The aim was to determine their phosphate absorption efficiency under greenhouse-controlled conditions. The evaluated cultivars were four grain sorghum (Chaguaramas III (Ch III), Chaguaramas VII (Ch VII), Dekalb-59 (DK-59) and Criollo-26), and one forage sorghum (Ismael). The experiment was carried out in a low phosphate availability soil (Typic Paleustults). A completely randomized design with factorial arrangement with two factors was used. Treatments were: T1 (control) = 0P (no phosphate applied); T2= RPR (Riecito phosphate rock), and T3 = TSP (Triple superphosphate). A nutrient solution (mg pot-1) of 58.54 K (KCl-60 % K2O) and 117 N (Urea-46 %N) was applied to all treatments. Phosphorus dose was 97.56 mg pot-1, where phosphate sources were Riecito phosphate rock and highly soluble Triple superphosphate. Determinations were made in the rhizosphere: acidic phosphomonoesterase activity, arbuscular mycorrhiza colonized root lenght (%CRL), pH soil-water relation 1:2,5 (in soil and rhizosphere), and phosphate efficiency use. Cultivars that better absorbed and used P showed mechanisms such as > % de CRL and rhizospheric pH increments. This was markedly showed in cultivars tolerant to aluminum toxicity which had higher dry matter yield. However cultivars less efficient in P absorption or use, showed an increased acid phosphatase activity, as a mechanism to grown in acid soils: this was particularly typical in D-59 cultivar, sensitive to aluminum toxicity.
In this investigation the break dormancy evolution and emergence to three seed burial depth (0, 5 and 10 cm) in 11 populations of weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) and 4 wild rice (O. rufipogon Griff y O. latifolia Desv) were evaluated. The populations were named according to their origin. The germination tests were carried out in a germination chamber at temperature of 30 ºC, and the emergence trial in pots with 2.5 kg of soil under greenhouse conditions. We used a randomized completely design with four replications. The results showed that the populations of weedy rice and O. rufipogon broke dormancy between 42 and 70 days after harvest (dah). We found that a major proportion of the evaluated populations (46.6%) germinated (> 80% of germination) at 56 dah. The greater lapse to break dormancy was observed in O. rufipogon (Barinas 10 y Barinas 12). The populations Portuguesa 4 (O. latifolia) did not break dormancy in the time that lasted the experiment. In the burial depth of 10 cm there was not emergence of seedling. The seed buried at 5 cm, compared against the superficial sowing, induced them to a secondary dormancy to populations of weedy rice and wild rice. We found a greater degree of secondary dormancy in Cojedes 3, Portuguesa 7, Portuguesa 9 and Barinas 10. Similar that found in the germination experiment, Portuguesa 4 (O. latifolia) did not emerge at the three evaluated burial depths.
