For Thomas Aquinas, man and woman express human reason differently. The female-mother, material and embodied reason, is identified with nature and resembles prime matter. The male resembles form, encloses the fullness of being, and tries to be a pure and disembodied reason, separated from nature, and necessary to complete woman. Axiologically, woman is whatever is indecent and dirty, and the instrument to make man stumble, while man is whatever is good and desired, for he was created before woman to mean his superiority in dignity and government.
The text displays the complexity of the discussion about the sense and the direction of history, and above all the great difficulty of endowing any sense to historical development in the present world. The article reconstructs briefly the pessimist position of the Frankfurt School, which represents a response to the conventional optimism of liberalism and marxism, conceived from a critique of the results due to technology and in view of today’s ecological problems. Finally the essay sketches the moderate scepticism of Karl Löwith as an acceptable compromise.
The influence of the hobbesian model, and especially the idea of war in the development of modern political thought in the centuries XVII and XVIII, has been amply documented. But this influence has not been outlined enough in regards to the continuity it has in contemporary political thought. This article presents some interpretative lines with which it is possible to observe the presence of the hobbesian idea of war in different and even antagonist political doctrines, such as those of the juridical liberalism of Immanuel Kant, the decisionism of Carl Schmitt and the neomarxism of Antonio Negri.
This essay critiques the position of multiculturalism, a philosophico-political movement which is in vogue nowadays and that defends cultural equality, but this equality is not implied in the natural equality of men, and relativism, which defends cultural equality, presents problems from a logical point of view. The notion of equality itself would lead to the paradoxical conclusion that societies which are egalitarian are superior to those hierarchical ones. In the same manner, it is valuable to outline West’s singularity with respect to other cultures. But to reject cultural equality does not exclude a limited form of multiculturalism.
This article gives a panoramic vision of the life and work of the Venezuelan thinker Julio César Salas, outlining his sociological, anthropologic and historical analysis of Venezuelan and continental reality. Being a freethinker, positivist, and militant evolutionist, as follower of the ideas of Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer, he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
