This paper develops an inquiry about creativity through the philosophy of Charles S. Peirce. The author deals, first of all, with the general characteristics of the creative phenomena. Later, the notion of abduction is explained, which constitutes for Peirce the engine of creativity. The study of abduction leads to the idea of reasonableness, understood as the purpose to which growth and creativity are orientated, and to a new way of understanding human reason as essentially creative. Finally, the author analyzes how the previous notions could be applied to a new model of education.
The article discusses the theoretical and analytical relevance of spontaneity, the basis of creativity, considered as a central aspect of the semiotic model of C. S. Peirce, through the study of its incidence on human identity, on the self. To do so, I work with a series of technical concepts from the Peircean theory of signs, which are applied to an analysis of a contemporary realistic fiction film. In its plot, in the mode of an allegory, it is possible to contemplate the process whereby the creative tendency to change emerges in everyday life, in a strong tension with its opposite, the conservative tendency which, if it acquires an excessive hegemony, aims to transform a concrete state of things into something permanent and oppressive for human life, which is construed as the continuous increase of reasonability.
In this paper creativity is considered as a metaphysical question, with a mathematical ground on the notion of continuity. Of Peirce’s hand, and going beyond his claims, the author examines first the metaphysical grounds of creativity and then the aspects related with logic and semiotics.
The purpose of this article is to present a model of creativity in the light of the thought of C. S. Peirce. Artistic communication is an event (as such, of the order of Secondness) by which the possible (Firstness) infiltrates itself into symbolism (Thirdness). Moreover, we describe more extensively the process of the production and the reception of a work of art. The Peircean system may contain an implicit theory of the production of a work of art, that establishes a double parallel with scientific investigation and with the evolution of the universe, respectively. The reception of a work of art consists in a cognitive activity, a thinking on the level of Firstness, an ‘iconic thinking.’ Along the process, the work of art makes Firstness circulate, so as to make it intelligible.
Some creativity modes in art and mathematics are studied, both looking for specificities and possible transits. Peirce’s “pragmaticist” architectonics -and, in particular, its attention to reasonableness and creativity- help to weave a counterpoint between art and literature on a basis of phaneroscopy and logic. A generic “conceptography” is proposed in order to diagram (in a Peircean sense) the dynamics of transfers and obstructions in culture.
In this lecture, delivered on 23 November 1903 at the Lowell Institute in Boston, Peirce refutes “a malady” that has broken out in science: the idea then in vogue that rationality rests on a feeling of logicality, and that it is futile to try to find an objective distinction between good and bad reasoning. On the contrary, Peirce claims, that distinction is not at all a matter of what we approve of, but is a question of fact. Good reasoning is that which tends to carry us toward the truth. Peirce discusses the significance of a tendency to guess correctly, and claims that reasoning is a form of controlled conduct, and thus has an ethical dimension. Sara BARRENA: La razón creativa.
