Two sugar cane genotypes differing in salt tolerance (‘PR692176’, salt tolerant and ‘V78-1’, salt sensitive) were evaluated to know the role of the Na+ and/or Cl- exclusion, the K/Na selectivity, and the accumulation of organic solutes in their differential salt tolerance. The plants grew four months under controlled conditions, and during the last two months, they were subjected to salt stress using simple sodium salts, with or without additional calcium supply. The concentration of Na+, K+, Cl-, soluble sugars and proline was determined in roots and in leaves differing in age. In the salt stressed plants, the foliar concentration of K+ was reduced, and Na+ y/o Cl- was increased, but the last two ions were accumulated mainly in the oldest leaves and the sheath. The foliar concentration of Na+ in NaCl-treated plants was higher than in Na2SO4-treated plants. Calcium supply to simple salts increased the concentrations of K+ and decreased Na+ y/o Cl- contents. The non-reducing sugars and proline contents were increased with salinity stress in both genotypes. Under saline stress, PR692176 showed a lower foliar concentration of Na+ and Cl-, and higher K/Na ratio in leaves, in addition to a higher content of non-reducing sugars, than V78-1. These results indicate that salt tolerance in sugar cane is related to a better exclusion capacity and a higher ability to accumulate non-reducing sugar for osmotic adjustment.
The selection of the suitable species is fundamental for the forestry of cities; however, the supply of appropriate ornamental trees suitable for tropical conditions is scarce; so it is important to develop the most convenient production techniques. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of different pre-germinative treatments on the plantlet emergency, following the germination of pink orchid tree (Bauhinia monandra Kurz) and yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana (Pers) Schum). In pink orchid tree, treatments of soaking the seeds in hot water and sulphuric acid for different times were evaluated, along with mechanical scarification in electric blender for two different times, and a control of intact seeds. In yellow oleander, the treatments were partial or total mechanical removal of epicarp, along with a control consisting in the intact fruits. Two experiments (one for each species) were established in completely randomized design with four replications and 75 seeds per plot. Emergency curves were developed, and the beginning time of the process (TI), number of days to 50 % of total emergency (TE50) and the lapse between the occurrence of 10 and 90 % of emergency (TE10-90) were determined. In pink orchid tree the chemical scarification with sulphuric acid by 5 minutes of soaking favored the emergence (95.6 %) and the speed of the process (1 day for TE10-90), whereas the treatments with hot water did not allow any emergency. In seeds of yellow oleander, the complete removal of pericarp allowed a maximum of 61.6 % emergence, while very low values were found when using intact fruits.
During December 2006- February 2007 transmission of TYLCV to tomato potted plants mediated by Bemisia tabaci (Biotype B) was evaluated in insect proof cages. Tomato plants of Río Orinoco hybrid (ROH), Río Grande hybrid (RGH), Cid hybrid (CH) and Río Grande variety (RGV) were exposed for 48 hours in individual cages to whiteflies raised either on viral infected tomato plants or healthy cotton plants. Thereafter, plants were observed daily for symptoms detection. Presence of Begomovirus in source plants was determined by PCR amplifying the 550 and 851 bp fragments of the central region of the gene coding for the viral coat protein. The sequences of the amplified fragments have 99% and 96% identity respectively with a TYLCV isolate. For experimental plants only presence of Begomovirus was determined amplifying by PCR the 550 bp fragment. ROH, RGH and RGV showed symptoms 11.3±1.4, 11.2±1.5 and 11.2+1.4 days post exposure period to the whiteflies, respectively. No symptoms were observed on CH tomato plants despite detection of Begomovirus by PCR. Symptomatic plants reached 100% for RGH and RGV, as well as 95% for ROH. These results suggest specific resistance of CH tomato plants to TYLCV infection.
In vivo ileal nutrient digestibility of five tropical foliages was determined in 72 New Zealand x California rabbits (45 days age) fed with diets containing 30 % of forage from either leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala), trichanthera (Trichanthera gigantea), mulberry (Morus alba), peanut forage (Arachis pintoi) or sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). A completely randomized experimental design was used with six treatments and 12 repetitions. The treatments were conformed by the control diet and those that contained the five test foliages. In vivo ileal nutrient digestibility indices were determined by an indirect method that uses acid-insoluble ash as inner marker. There was not significant effect of the treatment on the dry matter, ash and organic matter ileal digestibility. However, ileal digestibility of protein in the diet with leucaena was significantly lower (P≤0.01) than in the basal diet. In this index, the rest of diets containing the other four tropical forages showed intermediary values, ranging from 37.8% for trichanthera to 50.2 % for peanut forage. The dry matter, ash, organic matter and raw protein ileal digestibility of the evaluated forages were similar (P>0.05). The ileal digestibility determination in the diets and forages and the estimate of the caecal degradation, allowed to evidence that the proportion of cecal dry matter disappearance in leucaena and mulberry foliage was highest. The inclusion of leucaena, trichanthera, mulberry and peanut foliage did not cause substantial changes in ileal digestibility indexes in rabbits fed with those diets.
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schn.) is a plant wich seeds produce oil of high commercial value used in cosmetology and as lubricant. Experiments were conducted using the rotable central composite design (RCCD) in order to get the optimum of its proliferation in vitro and to evaluate the effect of the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria PGPR). Nodal segments were cultivated in Murashige & Skoog basal medium with different relations of sucrose (S) and 6- benziladenin (BA), calculated by the RCCD. According to the response surface graph, it was obtained that the optimun number of buds developed as shoots was 5.68, corresponding to 22.3/1.6 S/BA relationship. The biotization with 5 x 10(6) cfu·bud-1 of Azotobacter chroococum increased significantly the number of shoots generated per bud (rate of multiplication). In presence of 0.5 and 1 mg·L-1 of BA, increments of 46 and 28 % were obtained, respectively. The inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and A. lipoferum did not show any significative increase in the rate of multiplication.
The potential of yagua palm fruits for oil production was evaluated in several parts of the fruit. The maximum potential for oil production was estimated to be higher than 2000 kg·ha-1. The epicarp and mesocarp have 47.7 ± 1.37 % of dry matter (DM), 34.2 ± 0.75 % of ether extract (EE), 4.8 ± 0.21 % of simple phenols (SP), 6.9 ± 0.97 % of total polyphenols (TP), 2.2 ± 0.15 % total tannins (TT) and 5.88 ± 0.57 kcal·g-1 gross energy (GE). Epicarp and mesocarp oil have pH 4.7 ± 0.60 and GE 9.3 ± 0.01 kcal·g-1. Among the extracted oil fatty acids profile the oleic was the predominant fatty acid in the mesocarp (64.0 %) and the lauric in the endosperm (42.9 %). There was 25.8 ± 0.57 and 74.2 ± 0.91 % of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, respectively. The iodine index was 74.75 ± 0.21 and the saponification index 186.65 ±1.27. The oil solid fats of mesocarp varied from 0.31 % at 10 ºC to 0.01 at 35 ºC, without dropping. The palm fruit showed their potential for oil production for animals or humans, since its mesocarp oil showed to be superior to that of the african plam, the mesocarp oil was higher quality.
Due to the fruit importance within Venezuelan diet, and the changes in the consumption habit, an study was carried out in Maracaibo municipality, Zulia State, Venezuela, to evaluate the association among behavior variables in the purchase of fruits. An interchange analysis was used to define the attributes considered by the consumer at the time of buying fresh fruit. The attributes were color, damage, shape, ripeness, size and smell, and the selected fruits were banana, citrics, pineapple, guava, cantaloupe, papaw, sapodilla, watermelon, and strawberry. The surveyed population was represented by family homes distributed in 18 parish, for a sample of 384 families randomly and stratified selected. The survey was applied as data gathering instrument, which were codified later analyzed by SAS statistical package. The results obtained in the perceptual map suggest that consumers take into account damage and ripeness when buying guava and papaw. In bananas, besides the former attributes, size and color were considered. Size and color are also considered for citrics and watermelon were size and color. Smell was the highest attribute associated with sapodilla and pineapple. Strawberry and cantaloupe did not show any special attribute although might be associated to damage and size of the fruit.
With the purpose of performing a comparative economic analysis between canola and wheat (Triticum aestivum) in three municipalities of Jalisco State, México, four possible scenarios, based according to the selling price of these products, which vary according to some subsidies established in the country. It was found that the lower yield of canola as compared to wheat is compensated by its higher selling price. However, the production cost of canola is much lower than that for wheat. This implies that rentability of canola is higher than wheat, which even showed negative number for rentability in some municipalities. It is concluded that the canola represents an alternative for Jalisciense agriculture.
The relation predator-prey between the river shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum (Crustacea:Decapoda:Palaemonidae) and the peacock bass Cichla orinocensis ( Pisces:Perciformes: Cichlidae) were evaluated at laboratory level, with the aim of using this fish as a biological controller. The river shrimp is considered a plague by the “cachama” fish farmers of the central-western and high plains regions of Venezuela, due to its high rate of reproduction in cultured ponds. The high number of river shrimps affects dissolved oxygen concentration in the water, partially consumes fish feed, and hampers the mobilization of networks in ponds. The equation that correlates the peacock bass mouth opening (MO, mm) with its weight (Wp, g) and standard length (SL, mm) was expressed as MO = -48.2060 + 2.0544 SL + 2.0505 Wp. Also, the following equations that express some morphometric relations were established: Wp = 1.131 · 10 -5 · SL3.217, and Ws = 7.8311 x 10-3 TL 2.9737, where TL is the total length for shrimp and Ws its weight. A positive correlation between sizes of predator and prey was observed, but with no preferences for any particular size. In function of the oral cavity capacity, the peacock bass can consume river shrimp up to 80 % of its own size.
A new disease, caused by a pathogenic fungus, was found in 2003, affecting leaves and fruits of guava of the Red Dominican variety in the municipalities Ricaurte and Rómulo Gallegos of Cojedes State, Venezuela. In order to diagnose the disease, visits to commercial plantations were made, collecting fruits and leaves with symptoms characterized by reddish spots. The samples were initially transferred to the Fitopathologic Laboratory of FLASA, where isolations and sowings of the fungus in PDA were made; the fungus was subsequently identified in the INIA-CENIAP as Phyllosticta psidiicola (Petrak) Van der Aa. The pathogen causes diminution in commercial value of the fruit, and it has been scattered to other producing zones of guava in Cojedes State.
