Geographic Information Systems are defined as a set of computer technology, methods and procedures used in the handling and analysis of geographically referenced data. They can be used to map the distribution of diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis is a disease of genetic etiology with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, although it has a low incidence, complications of this disease are very severe and require treatment daily and frequent hospitalizations, representing a high cost to society. In Venezuela it is not known precisely the spatial distribution of this disease, which is why there was a descriptive research, documentary, retrospective, which allowed developing a geospatial model with 69 CF patients who were diagnosed in the Project Aragua Unit (UPA) during the period June 1993 - June 2011, resulting in the most common places of origin were: Capital District, Aragua and Carabobo; it also facilitated the identification of the pattient of distribution of georreferencial such patient and their relatives up to the second degree of consaguinity and presents the possible migration or “path” genetics of the genes for Cystic Fibrosis.
For public health management with political and ethical criteria of equity, it is imperative to focus the search for indicators towards areas with lower levels of aggregation that are more homogeneous in their living conditions. Documentary research was conducted under the critical epidemiology approach, in order to analyze trends in infant and maternal mortality in the State of Carabobo, during the periods 1990- 1998 and 1999-2007 and its relationship with the national trend and inter-municipal territorial inequalities during 1990-2005.
The Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). At present, more than 1900 mutations have been identified. The most common CFTR mutation is pF508del, it is predominant in Europe. Few mutations have been reported in Venezuela: pF508del, pG542X, pR553X, 3120+1G'A. The objective of this work was to determine the frequency of six CFTR mutations in patients from the Western Central Region of Venezuela and to identify CF geographical focuses. Sixty unrelated patients with clinical features consistent with CF diagnosis and sixty healthy relatives were included. The clinical records were reviewed to investigate: sex, age at diagnosis, sweat chloride values and birthplace of patients and grandparents. Two mL of whole blood samples were drawn from patients, after informed consent and DNA was extracted; the pF508del, pG542X, pR553X, pG551D, pN1303K and pG85E mutations were investigated. The mutations found and their frequency were: pF508del (39.16 %), pG542X (4.17 %) and pR553X (2.50%). There were 54.17% different mutations from the six investigated and they were called OTHER. Seven genotypes were identified, but only 25% are complete (pF508del/pF508del, pF508del/pG542X and pF508del/pR553X). Fifteen CF geographical focuses were identified, which are located in the following regions: a) Western Central (05), b) North Central Coast (03), c) Central (01), d) South-West (03), e) South-East (01), f) Oriental (02). The results of this research contribute to improve the quality of life in patients and their families, and they are important for the National CF Program.
Visceral Leishmaniasis is an infectious, parasitic, endemic and cosmopolitan, of wide geographical distribution, considered a reemerging disease emerging in urban and suburban areas, produced by L. (L.) infantum and transmitted to humans by the bite of small dipterous the genus Lutzomyia involving small and large mammals in the family Canidae. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the series of cases of visceral leishmaniasis in Aragua state in the period 2000-2010. We performed an epidemiological study, a retrospective case series, we reviewed the records of 13 of notification and registration of cases of visceral leishmaniasis, obtained from the National Programme for Control of Visceral Leishamniasis, and its annexes. Of these 10 (76.9%) were children under 15 years and 7 (53.8%) were under 4 years. In males, 61.54% was observed predominantly. The 84.62% of cases had symptomatic triad: persistent fever splenomegaly and progressive weight loss, which is accompanied by hepatomegaly and Soft Painless at 76.92%. For the secondary clinical, the main sign was anorexia 84.62%, followed by anemia (64.51%). Visceral Leishmaniasis in Aragua State was characterized as hypoendemic from 1941 to the present, with the presence of index cases and temporary disruption in the urban areas of the different municipalities. The formation of health professionals for knowledge of clinical and epidemiological aspects is essential for early diagnosis and treatment of disease.
