The martensitic microstructure behavior of stainless steel AISI 420 has been used as a comparative pattern with austenitic microstructure. Both microstructures were subjected to three different loads during five different contact times and to a constant turn speed. The wear in the sample type disks of each one of the microstructures was determined by means of the weight lost. Tests result analysis based on weight lost and the hardness changes on austenitic microstructure show that strain hardening effect improves the wear strength of this microstructure.
Behavior of metals (Pb, Zn, Fe, Al AND Ni) during coal mine drainages treatment in constructed wetlands http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200002&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt In the present investigation the behavior of heavy metals Pb, Zn, Fe, Al and Ni, during the treatment of coal mine drainages in constructed wetlands dominated by Typha dominguensis was studied. The tests were done in tanks provided with two different support materials (sediment of storage drainages pit and grave), implementing the hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 24, 72, 120, 168 and 216 h. The metal determinations by atomic absorption spectrometry showed good precision (standard relative deviation = 2.41%) and accuracy (recovery percentage between 96.08 and 103.66%). The metal concentration (mg/L) was 0.48-1.36 Pb, 0.67-28.28 Zn, 0.13-3.38 Fe, 0.62-146.80 Al and 0.08-4.39 Ni. In general it was observed a noticeable tendency towards the reduction of metal contents as the HRT was increased, especially in the wetlands with pit sediments (initially release). The Pb showed minor trend to removal. The release from pit sediments, plant secretions and material atmospheric deposition, could be the related mechanisms to metal mobility. The necessity arises to evaluate the wetland systems like possible sink or metal sources.
Stabilization of a brushed DC motor with the port controlled Hamiltonian approach http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200003&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt The main objective of this paper is to present an application of the port controlled Hamiltonian approach to achieve stabilization of electromechanical systems. For this purpose we have selected the model of a DC brushed motor, which have been shown to be useful in illustrating some nonlinear control techniques. By means of the application of conversion of energy principles, the brushed DC motor is modeled in a suitable form, allowing instrumentally to dispose of the total energy function of the system, which carries on the mechanical and electrical effects. On the ground of the total energy function, it is possible to express the system in the port controlled Hamiltonian form, which clearly describes the interconnection and damping structures of the system, and the input and output ports of energy. Once we have reached this representation, the result is the passivation of the system, hence by means of the application of the interconnection and damping assignment passivity based control methods, we obtain the synthesis of a static feedback stabilizing control.
Concentration of K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, proteins and fatty in the lined catfish Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum of the middle Orinoco in Venezuela http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200004&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt An analysis of the concentrations of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, proteins and fat, was made in the muscular tissue of the lined catfish Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum from the middle Orinoco in Venezuela, as a contribution to the knowledge of the ecofisiology of the species and of its importance from the nutritious point of view. In this work, we study the impact of the choice of a turbulence model, as part of a study of the behavior of air-water two-phase flow in a cylindrical cyclone separator using the finite volume method(FVM).The study was conducted with a commercial CFD code to simulate single-phase flow of water in the cyclone separator, using the standard Kappa-Epsilon (κ-ε), Renormalization-Group Kappa-Epsilon (RNG) and Reynolds Stress (RS) models with both low-order and high-order interpolation. Simulation results were compared with experimental data of angular velocities and flow rates at different heights in the separator. The results show that the RNG and RS models with high order interpolation agree satisfactorily with the experimental data, while κ-ε and low-order RNG model are able to capture the trends of the experimental data but fail to match the observed values.
Formulation of asphalt emulsions with lignin derivatives and its behavior with mixtures of stony materials http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200006&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt On the present paper, the use of lignin derivatives in the formulation of asphalt emulsions and its behavior as mixture with qualified rock aggregates was evaluated. In this investigation of descriptive nature, the asphalt emulsion was formulated with laboratory experiments and pilot plants, and the behavior with mixtures of rock aggregates with the Modified Marshall Method of Illinois. Three types of commercial lignin were used and one recovered in the laboratory from black liquor by means of a process of extraction with sulfuric acid (H2S). The formulation lead to an emulsion of the nonionic type, with an adapted behavior as it resulted from the mixture with rock aggregates with controlled properties. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the designed mixture presents optimal properties as base layer in highway paving, limited its use for surface layer by the percentage of loss of stability, where the determining factor could be the setting time.
Regression models for the prediction of high impact polystyrene properties using operational variables http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200007&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt In this work, we proposed models based on multiple linear regression analysis and artificial neural networks in order to predict some properties used for the quality control of different grades of high impact polystyrenes. These models were based on recipes and operational conditions in an industrial plant. The properties considered were melt flow index, Izod impact resistance, yield stress, break stress, percent elongation. In validation, the sum of the squares errors were 38,4, 7,16 × 10³, 116 and 103 for melt flow index, Izod impact resistance, yield stress and break stress, respectively. According to standardized coefficients of the regression equations, variables with most significant effects on the considered properties were the modifier concentration (tert-dodecylmercaptane), and lubricants (zinc stearate and mineral oil) concentrations. In the studied region, the performances of both models (linear regression and neural networks) were similar.
Vulnerability to the Contamination of underground waters in the Coquivacoa Parish of the Maracaibo Municipality-Zulia State http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702006000200008&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt The cartography of the vulnerability of the aquifer mantels is one of the most appropriate alternatives to preserve the quality of the underground waters. She allows differentiating the natural characteristics of the land to protect to the aquifer of the action of multiple pollutants that can infiltrate from the surface, associated to natural phenomena or to the man’s activity. In Venezuela, the underground waters occupy a fundamental paper in the population’s supply, agriculture and the industry. The presented work evaluates the natural vulnerability of the aquifers in the Parish Coquivacoa of the Municipality Maracaibo, to inclination, of a methodology that calculates the vulnerability index that Index of PATHS has been denominated. This index is obtained starting from the analysis of: Precipitations, Half Aquifer (Depth of the Phreatic Level, Litology of the aquifer), Topography (Slope of the land) and Hydraulic Resistivity of the floor. The whole information was processed using the theory Convolution of Gosh and the algorithms of the Nested Regression and as a result the Parish Coquivacoa was represented to scale 1:5000 that it constitutes the starting point to decide on investigations and monitoring nets to detailed scales, to dictate political of control to the agricultural, industrial, urban activities, and besides evaluating the danger of contamination of the underground waters.
The kinetics data of the ionic systems were fitted by the Fick’s law with a variable diffusion coefficient expressed by the Gilliland model. The experimental methodology involved the use of batch tests under agitation, constant temperature, between sample milk and cationic resin type Ionac C-249, during a contact period of 6 hours. The ion-exchange reactions were followed by sampling the liquid phase every one hour. In the milky phase the concentrations of sodium and calcium were determined by spectrophotometry of atomic absorption. The results show that the exchange of Na+ ions into resin presents a distribution pattern S and the kinetics can be expressed by Gilliland model as , on the other hand, the exchange of Ca++ ions presents a distribution pattern C and the kinetics given by .
