The purpose of this study was to describe surgical approach for a percutaneous discectomy of the T11-L6 intervertebral discs in canine cadavers. A percutaneous dorsolateral approach, guided by fluoroscopy, at the level of the T11 to L6 intervertebral discs in six healthy adult fresh canine cadavers of different breeds was performed. A minimally invasive mechanical percutaneous discectomy with a 2-mm forceps and a thermal discectomy with radiofrequency, were carried out. Both the percutaneous approach and the discectomy were possible in 96% of the samples. The average distance of needle penetration with respect to the midline was 4.3 ± 1276 cm. With respect to the horizontal plane, the mean angle was 50.1 ± 14785 degrees. The amount of disc material removed was approximately 10 mm, and the implementation of the entire procedure left a 4 mm wound. It was demostrated that the dorsolateral percutaneous approach in dogs enables a direct access to the intervertebral disk through a minimally invasive procedure. Percutaneous discectomy could be an alternative for decompression in patients with degenerative disc pathologies and protruded hernias in the thoracolumbar segment. It is deemed clinical studies to evaluate the efficacy of this procedure. Clinical and Histopathological Study of the Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Cattle of the Cordoba Department, Colombia http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0258-65762013000200002&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Se estudiaron los aspectos clínicos e histopatológicos del carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) en bovinos del Departamento de Córdoba, Colombia.
A quantitative genetic study for birth weight (BW), weaning weight corrected at 205 days (WW205), and weight at 18 months corrected at 548 days (W548), was conducted in a Brahman herd located in the State of Cojedes, Venezuela, under a supervised genetic and environmental program. The records of 5137 animals born from 1996-2007 were analyzed. Components of covariance, genetic and non-genetic parameters were estimated through three univariate animal models, using the MTDFREML set of programs. All models included random effects, such as direct genetic additive, maternal genetic additive, and permanent environmental of the dam; and as a fixed effect, the contemporary group. The direct heritability indexes were 0.45, 0.20, and 0.34; and the maternal heritability indexes were 0.02, 0.13 and 0.04 for BW, WW205 and W548, respectively. All genetic additive direct-maternal correlations were positive. The estimates for the annual phenotypic trends were 0.285 for BW, 2.045 for WW205, and 0.503 for W548; respectively. The direct additive annual trends were 0.075 kg, 0.523 kg, and 1.072 kg for BW, WW205, and W548, respectively. The results of the investigation indicate the existence of enough genetic variability for growth in the evaluated population, which favors the selection program for growth. Prevalence of trypanosoma spp. by ELISA and indirect fluorescent antibody test in three water buffaloes herds from the State of Cojedes, Venezuela http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0258-65762013000200004&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Animal trypanosomiasis is a disease caused by parasites of the genus Trypanosome. This malady is widely distributed in many countries, located in tropical and subtropical areas of the world where blood-sucking flies are present. Water buffaloes are important domestic animals used for meat and milk production, and draught power. Buffalo herds are raised in areas where trypanosomiasis is endemic. In Venezuela, the buffalo industry is becoming a very important and common livestock. However, animals imported from non-endemic areas may suffer severe infections. The development of methods which ensure an efficient epidemiological surveillance against this disease is of great relevance. The immunological tests are of great importance for this purpose, because of the low sensitivity of the current parasitological methods, due to the low parasite burden that occur in subclinical and chronic infections caused by trypanosomes. To estimate the serological prevalence of trypanosome in water buffaloes, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in buffalo samples of healthy animals from the municipalities of Rómulo Gallegos, Ricaurte and Girardot, in the State of Cojedes, Venezuela. Additionally, samples were also assessed with the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and the microhematocrit test (MHCT). A total of 180 blood samples, none of which had an active parasitemia by TMC, were assessed. The prevalence determined by ELISA was 45.56%, which was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that obtained by IFAT (28.89%). The results of the experiments showed a moderate Kappa index of concordance of 0.45 (95% CI: 0.31-0.58); whereas the concordance value for both tests was 73.33%. Both the sensitivity and specificity of ELISA, compared to the IFAT, was 82.69% and 69.53%, respectively. The predictive positive and negative values were 52.44% and 90.82%, respectively. The findings suggest an endemic condition, with moderate infection values caused by Trypanosoma spp. in buffaloes from these regions of Venezuela and show, for the first time, the usefulness of ELISA for epidemiological studies of trypanosomiasis.
The purpose of this research was to diagnose Hepatozoon spp. in dogs from rural areas in some municipalities of the States of Lara and Yaracuy, Venezuela, and its relationship with potential arthropods vectors involved in its transmission. Babesia canis vogeli, Ehrlichia canis, and less frequently, Hepatozoon canis, are the most important hemoparasites of dogs, all having as a common vector Rhipicephalus sanguineus. These hemoparasites frequently infest both domestic and rural animals without overt clinical symptoms; in other cases, they cause diseases of varied severity. Coinfections by hemoparasites are very common, which favors the severity of clinical symptoms. Besides R. sanguineus, other tick genera like Amblyomma and Ixodes, can be found infesting dogs. To carry out this study, thin blood smears from peripheral ear veins of 300 dogs were performed; and 604 ticks were collected by manual extraction. These ixodids were taxonomically identified at the Parasitology Laboratory, with the help of dichotomous taxonomic keys. Then, they were subjected to dissections looking for evolutionary stages of Hepatozoon spp. Results obtained were analyzed through non-parametric statistics, showing the presence or absence of Hepatozoon spp. and the identification of the involved vectors. Hepatozoon spp. was found in samples of peripheral blood in 11 of the dogs studied, three from the State of Lara and eight from the State of Yaracuy. Regarding vectors, 557 Rhipicephalus sanguineus, 11 Amblyomma ovale and 10 Ixodes spp. were identified in Lara, whereas only 26 specimens of Amblyomma ovale were identified in Yaracuy. It is important to underscore the presence of Hepatozoon spp. in rural areas where R. sanguineus was not identified.
Inborn errors of metabolism are defined as genetic disturbances that occur in the structure and/or function of protein molecules. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a good example of this type of disturbance, which is due to an alteration in the enzymatic reaction responsible for phenylalanine (Phe) hydroxylation. Treatment of this disease is basically nutritional. In Venezuela, new raw materials with a low content of Phe are being tested, so that they can be included in the diets of children suffering from PKU. Previous administration to humans, these raw materials should be validated by in vivo biological tests, using laboratory animals. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the plantain (Musa paradisíaca) meal, as the only ingredient, in the nutritional management of experimentally induced PKU in laboratory mice, using a-methyphenylalanine, as the agent responsible for blocking phenylalanine hydroxylase, at a dose of 24 µM/10 of body weight (BW). To help blockade, a dose of D-phenylalanine (52 µM/10g of BW), was also administered. The results of the investigation showed that during the pre-weaning stage, mice exhibited a slight elevation in Phe levels that was statistically significant (P≤0.05), reaching a hyperphenylalalinemia level of 4-10 mg/dL of blood. In contrast, when mice were subjected to a post-weaning diet with plantain meal as the only nutritional source, a difference (P≤0.05) in their development could be observed, which evidenced marked deterioration and malnutrition. It is recommended that additional studies be performed that include a glycomacropeptid along with the plantain meal, so that minimum nutritional requirements can be supplied, keeping low levels of Phe in PKU patients. Bibliometric analysis of published scientific literature in the facultad de ciencias veterinarias journal of the Universidad Central de Venezuela: Period 2002-2011. II.
To improve the understanding of the processes of technology transfer between university-business and communities, is one of the concerns of the university academy of any nation, for its self-evaluation, appointed to redirect their impacts, being the bibliometric analysis (Scientometrics) one of the assessment tools. The aim of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature published in the Journal of the Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (FCV-UCV)during the period 2002-2011. Research published in each journal during that time was considered, applying the consumer bibliometric indicators (density, half-life, Price index, isolation index, document typology, and language capacity). The review articles, letters to the editor, reflections, editorials, and informative notes, were not included in the scientific study. A total of 2651 bibliographic references in 106 scientific articles were evaluated. The results of the investigation showed a density close to 25 references/article, with an average half-life of 10 years. The Price index exceeded 24% and the isolation index was approximately 16%. More than 66% of the documents listed as bibliographic references were scientific journals written in English. It is recommended that the age of the consulted literature be revised, due to the high risk of using outdated or superseded information.
