It produced to baseline data for further investigative research, help fish clinicians in pathology and aid nutritionists in feed management. After cropping from a commercial aquaculture, apparently healthy fish were immobilized and euthanized by using chloroform. The samples were dissected and slices of cardiac, fundic and pyloric stomach processed through routine histological procedures. Grossly, the stomach was J-shape. Cranial to the stomach was the oesophagus but no sphincter was seen separating them. Caudally, a pyloric sphincter separated the stomach from the proximal intestine. The stomach contained three regions cardiac, fundic and pyloric. The entire stomach surface was lined by a simple columnar epithelium containing mucin at the apical cytoplasm. Only the cardiac and fundic regions contained gastric glands in the lamina propria, but the glands were more developed in the fundic region. The tunica muscularis contained smooth muscle cells in an inner circular and outer longitudinal orientation. Mucin histochemistry revealed the presence of only neutral mucin in the stomach. The results obtained in this study suggest that the absence of gastric glands in the pylorus may be an adaptation of this species to reduce the quantity of acid entering the proximal intestine; hence it might help the alkaline medium to maximize pancreatic enzyme actions in the proximal intestine. The presence of only neutral mucin in the stomach will act as a buffer to neutralize the high acidic stomach content. Neutral mucins are also associated with transport of macromolecules.
An experiment was conducted to determine the activities of trypsin and lipase pancreatic enzymes from growing pigs fed peach palm meal (Bactris gasipaes H.B.K.; PPM) and synthetic lysine (SL). Forty-eight barrows, with an average live weight of 30 ± 0 5 kg, were randomly distributed and allotted to six experimental diets in a 3x2 factorial arrangement of treatments, with three levels of PPM (0, 16 and 32 %), with or without the addition of 0.27% SL, with four replications per diet and two pigs per experimental unit. To collect pancreas samples, four pigs per diet were slaughtered at third and sixth weeks. The results of the assay showed no effect of diet (PPM xLS) on the activity of the enzymes. An effect (P <0.05) of the diet x week interaction on trypsin and lipase enzymatic activities was observed. There were no significant differences in the activity of trypsin in the third week, after consumption of diets. In the sixth week, all diets, except that containing 0.27 % of SL and 16 % of PPM, showed lower (P<0.05) trypsin activity than the basal diet. In the third week, the pancreatic lipase activity was greatest (P<0.05) in pigs fed the diet with 16% of PPM without SL; and in the sixth week, the activity was less (P<0.05) in pigs fed diets containing 32% of PPM with and without the addition of 0.27% of SL, when compared with the basal diet and that which contained 32% of PPM and/or SL. In summary, the PPM and/or SL diets affect the trypsin and pancreatic lipase activities after sixth weeks of consumption.
Haemonchosis caused by the abomasal nematode of ruminants, Haemonchus contortus, represents one of the biggest problems in sheep farming by its impact on production losses and cost of anthelmintic treatments. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Haemonchus sp. and the estimated values of the hematocrit (Hto) and hemoglobin (Hb) of sheep from the municipality of Oicatá, Colombia. A random sampling of 201 creole animals belonging to extensive farms was carried out. Individual fecal samples were analyzed by the method of concentration formol-ether and the Haemonchus sp. infection determined. Blood samples from the same animals were obtained from the cephalic vein in EDTA containing tubes. Four hematological parameters were estimated: haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (Hto), red blood cells count (RBC) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Results were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS18 with a level of statistical significance of p<0.05. A prevalence of 31.3% was found for Haemonchus sp. Only 6% of the animals showed Hto below normal values, while 6.5% had abnormal Hb values in the presence of the helminth. RBC presented normal values in the presence of the parasite. In this study no correlation was found between the presence of the parasite and the haematological parameters determined.
Trypanosomosis caused by Trypanosoma vivax (T. vivax), is distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Latin America and Asia, causing great economic losses. Previous biometric analysis report that T. vivax measures between 18 and 31 µm; but few such studies have been conducted in Venezuela. The aim of this study was to describe and compare the morphometry of five isolates of T. vivax, to demonstrate the variability in size of the protozoa obtained from naturally-infected cattle in different geographical areas of Venezuela. To accomplish this, experimental infections were induced in sheep and blood samples were taken at the first peak of parasitemia. Micrographs of stages of hematozoa (20 micrographs of each specimen using scanning electron microscopy) were recorded for morphological studies. The results of this research revealed significant (p<0.05); (p<0.01) statistical differences in length among them. The total average length was 20.99 ± 2.10 µm, with variations which ranged from 18.12 ± 4.42 µm, for smaller lengths, and 24.35 ± 5.55 µm, for greater lengths, respectively. Therefore, the existence of variability in the size of these hemoparasites in Venezuela was demonstrated.
During an assay to evaluate the efficacy of two bovine anthelminthic formulations (Moxidectin as Cydectin NF® and Doramectin as Dectomax®), the in vivo parasitic burden and the strongyles species present in four adult Venezuelan Creole horses with a high strongylid count were studied. The study was carried out at Estación Experimental “La Iguana” de la Universidad Simón Rodríguez (UNESR), Municipio Santa María de Ipire, estado Guárico (Venezuela). A total of four adult horses with a high strongylid count (more than 1000 eggs per gram of feces) through a post treatment parasite recovery were used. Horses were allocated into 2 groups (one male and one female per group), as follows: Group I: two animals treated with a subcutaneous (sc) injection of 0.4 mg/kg body weight (BW) of Moxidectin; Group II: two animals treated with a sc injection of 0.3 mg/kg BW of Doramectin. Samples of feces (approximately 500 g) were collected at 24 and 48 h post-treatment for the in vivo recovery of the strongyles species present. The results showed that nematodes were only seen in animals from Group I 48 h post-treatment: 325 individual parasites of the Strongylidae family were recovered in males and only 201 in females. In Group II, nematodes were observed at 24 and 48 h post treatment, with 136 parasites recovered in males and only 3 in females. Six genuses were observed: Cylicocyclus, Coronocyclus, Cyathostomum, Cylicostephanus, Triodontophorus y Poteriostomum and sixteen species, being Cylicocyclus nassatus the species with more abundance and intensity. Posteriostomum imparidentatum is reported for the first time in Venezuelan Creole horses. The post-treatment parasite recovery is a good alternative for the estimation of the parasite burden and the composition of the strongylid parasite community when necropsy studies are not available or desirable.
To determine the effect of two types of bedding material on parasitic burden in growing and fattening pigs housed in deep litter, an assay was conducted using 92 immune castrated males, with an average initial weight of 30.00 kg and 70 days old until finalization weight. A completely randomized design was used, with two treatments based on bedding material, as follows: grass hay (GH) and rice husk (RH), with six replicates/treatment and 46 animals/treatment, according to a density of 1.37 pigs/m². A commercial feed was given ad libitum. During the course of 90 days was evaluated: amount of bedding material required per animal (ABA), bedding moisture (BM) ammonia emission (AE), chemical composition of the bed, areas of use (% of clean and dirty area), presence of ectoparasites (PE), parasite burden in bed (PBB) and feces of pigs (PBF). The data obtained were analyzed using the PROC GENMOD methodology, of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Statistically significant (P<0.05) differences were found between GH and RH for the variables ABA (107.32 and 84.157 kg/animal/cycle), AE (9.462 and 3.3274 ppm), PE (14.04, and 4.34 flies/animal/day), areas of use and chemical composition of the bed in their nitrogen, protein, fiber, crude fat, ash and phosphorus fractions:. No significant differences between treatments were found for PBB. In contrast, significant differences were shown for PBF. The presence of ectoparasites in pigs housed in deep litter with HG was greater. Additionally, a less amount of bed material was required per animal with RH, in comparison with HG.
