Los valores promedio fueron: 4,37 g/dL proteínas totales, 1,50 g/dL albúmina, 119,63 U/L fosfatasa alcalina, 27,60 mg/dL urea, 0,17 mg/dL creatinina, 3,36 mg/dL ácido úrico, 180,77 mg/dL colesterol, 32,24 mg/dL triglicéridos, 130,07 mg/dL glucosa, 5,20 mg/dL fósforo, 7,94 mg/dL calcio, 44,02 µg/dL hierro, 196,68 meq/L sodio, 4,75 meq/L potasio, 4,99 mg/dL magnesio y 2,11 mg/L zinc.
Sea turtles have been widely investigated and reviewed over the last decades. Blood biochemistry represents a valuable diagnostic tool for monitoring the health condition of wildlife. The aim of this study was to determine the blood biochemistry values of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) present in the Alta Guajira, Venezuela. Blood samples were collected of the dorsal cervical sinuses from 28 green turtles captured in gill nets. The turtles were released later. The curved carapace length (CCL) and curved carapace width (CCW) were measured with a flexible measuring tape. The following values were established using commercial kits: total proteins, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and phosphorus by colorimetry; the minerals were determined by emission (sodium, potassium) and absorption spectrometry (calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc). The mean values obtained were: total proteins (4.37 g/dL), albumin (1.50 g/dL), alkaline phosphatase (119.63 U/L), urea (27.60 mg/dL), creatinine (0.17 mg/dL), uric acid (3.36 mg/dL), cholesterol (180.77 mg/dL), triglycerids (32.24 mg/dL), glucose (130.07 mg/dL), phosphorus (5.20 mg/dL), calcium (7.94 mg/dL), iron (44.02 µg/dL), sodium (196.68 meq/L), potassium (4.75 meq/L), magnesium (4.99 mg/dL) and zinc (2.11 mg/L). These results fall within the reference intervals documented in this species, except for the alkaline phosphatase, triglycerides, cholesterol, and urea, which showed the largest variations.
A documental research of 63 livestock owners and managers with chronic poisoning by Pteridium’ genotypes of the Municipalities of Sapopema and Sâo Jerónimo da Serra, Paraná State, Brazil, was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the attitudes, behavior and knowledge level of rural producers of the chronic toxicosis and weed syndromes, in order to design strategies focused minimizing on economical features in those geographical areas. In the farms visited, the 1.6% of the animals showed clinical sings of the losses, being females 3 to 5 years old the most affected. Of the clinically sick animals, 96.1% showed bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH) symptoms, including animals not older than 2 years old and 3.9% were identified with upper alimentary syndrome (UAS). The 10.3% of producers admitted that cows with BEH were regularly milked. This and other observed facts were a cause of growing concern in public health issues. 61.9% of the owners used various paliatives because hey have strong believes in recovering the affected animals and selling them, because they have strong believes in recovering the affected animals and selling them afterwards. On the other hand, it is clear that important reforms heading to the establishment and improvement of the pasturing fields are absent, for strategies of supplementary feeding are not being planned, although rural owners are concern about poisoning because of its serious economic consequences, effects on public health, not with standing. Such behavior obeys to cultural reasons, lack of information and financial conditions. This compromising result require the urgent intervention of the public sector to adopt educative actions that can modify in an effective way the today’s behavior and also begin an integrated program to control the problematic situation.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of estrous synchronization with PGF2a vs cidr + 500 IU of eCG on interval to estrus, ovulation and steroidal hormones plasma concentrations during early luteal phase in sheep. Fourteen ewes were treated, distributed in two groups: Group 1 (Control), synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin-F2a (PG), given 9 days apart, and Group 2, was treated with CIDR for 12 days and 500 IU of eCG. Estrous presentation was 100%. The interval estrus-ovulation was 36.0 ± 0.72 h in Group two. The control group presented an interval estrus-ovulation of 53.42 ± 3.0 hours (P<0.001).There were significant difference (P < 0.01) in P4 plasma concentrations among treatments. In Group 2, the animals showed significatives increases (P < 0.01) in P4 plasma concentrations during day 6 until day 10 when compared with control animals. It was observed significative difference at interaction treatment by day (P < 0.05). E2 plasma concentrations were statistically differents (P < 0.001) among control group and synchronized group with CIDR + eCG. There were significant difference (P < 0.001) in E2 plasma concentrations among treatments after ovulation day (Day 0) with significative difference among days (P < 0.001) and interaction treatment x day (P < 0.05). These results indicated that estrous synchronization in Bergamacia females, using CIDR + eCG diminished interval estrus-ovulation and elicit higher levels of steroidal hormones in plasma.
A scolopendra sting in humans and domestic animals is an acute and highly painful accident. The present study was an attempt to raise specific hyper-immune polyclonal antibodies against scolopendra centipede (Scolopendra gigantea Linneaus 1758) venom. A group of hens were injected with venoms subcutaneously and intramuscularly according to three different routines. This protocol was found to be effective for hyperimmunization. Eggs were gathered daily and antibodies were purified from yolk with a polyethylene-glycol and chloroform modified method. Titers of antibodies in yolk were estimated with an agar gel precipitation test, and a serum protection (ED50) test. Eggs harvested at 15 days post-injection had maximum antibody titers. After six months, antibodies lyophilized and stored at 5°C still maintained their activity. Envenomed mice were injected with purified antibodies, which induced 100% recovery as compared to those not treated with the antibodies. The cleanliness, effectiveness, and simplicity of producing antibodies against scolopendra venom in avian egg yolk, and their incapability to attach human complement, formulates an interesting option to equine and other mammalian antivenoms. This study infers that avian egg yolk antibodies may be useful as a therapeutic tool in treating scolopendrism in humans and domestic animals. It also opens a field for the production of other antivenoms against the wide spectrum of toxins as well as the use of these antibodies as a diagnostic tool.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of some environmental factors on the constants of the growth curve of crossbred calves in a dual-purpose system in the humid tropic of Mexico. Calves were: ¾ European (Holstein, Simmental, Brown Swiss) ¼ Zebu, as their mothers. The calves help to the let down of milk during milking and drunk the residual milk for 30 minutes (restricted suckling) and were maintained in a Star grass paddock having access to an energetic-proteical supplement (1 kg/calf/day). Three hundredth and sixty-one (190 males and 171 females) were weighed (4.678 weights) at birth and thereafter every 28 days until weaning. The linear and quadratic constants for each animal growth were analyzed through general linear models. Year and season of birth had significant effects (P<0.05) on the linear and quadratic regression coefficients, sex of the calf on the quadratic coefficient and parity number on the linear coefficient. Under cattle dual-purpose systems in the tropics, bio-climatic factors during the seasons of the year bring about conditions, which result in different daily weight gain of the calves. Milk consumption had an important effect in the rate of weight body gain. Feed supplementation to the calf might reduce the importance of the milk effect mainly in the last part of the rearing period.
In order to evaluate complementation effects of hay-molasses-urea on average daily gain, lactation length and lactation yield with 31 native goats, a trial was carried out in San Jose de los Ranchos, Torres Municipality, Lara State, Venezuela. Goats with average weight of 28.87 ± 2 kg, were submitted to a completely random design to To: Control (grazing and browsing only); T1: To + hay (55.55%), molasses (44.45%) and T2: To + hay (53.19%), molasses (42.55%), urea (4.26%), being complemented both groups when animals were gathered during night time. There was significant differences (P<0.05) on average daily gain with means of 91.61, 55.86 and 25.40 g for T2, T1 and To, respectively. Milk yield and lactation length were no statistically different (P>0.05), with means of 16.30, 17.51 and 18.70 kg/week and 9.0, 8.43 and 9.0 weeks for To, T1 and T2, respectively. So, it can be pointed out that hay-molasses-urea complementation, constitutes a potential nutritional source to recuperate body condition of lactating native goats raised under extensive conditions similar to those described in this trial. Shedding of lawsonia intracellularis by fattening pigs in two production systems in Yucatan, Mexico http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592008000400010&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Se realizó un estudio longitudinal para determinar la frecuencia e incidencia de Lawsonia intracellularis en cerdos de engorde en una granja de múltiples sitios y otra de un sitio en Yucatán, México. Diets containing 22 and 20% PC, 3,100 and 3,200 Kcal EME/kg, 0.7 and 0.67% total P and 1 to 0.90% Ca, for starting and growing, respectively. Body weight, feed and water intake were measured weekly and feed conversion. At four and six weeks were estimate density, P and ash in bone. Body weight at week 4 resulted elevated (P <0.05) in T1 (1.093), T2 (1.024), T3 (957) treatments compared with T4 (888). At week 6, body weight was lightly higher in T1 and T2 compared with T2a,T2b,T3,T3 and T4 with values of 1.874; 1.783; 1.934; 1.887; 1.881; being the lowest (P < 0.05) T3b (1.761). Feed intake was high for T2 (3.799), T1 (3.733) compared with T2a (3.590), T2b (3.610) and T3 (3.538), T3a (3552), T3b (3.520), being lowest (P < 0.05) T4 (3.376). Feed conversion was similar (P > 0.05). Water intake was lightly higher for T2 (8.488), T1 (8.442) comparing with T2a (7.696), T2b (7.948) and T3 (7.642), T3a (7.546), T3b (7.955) and the lowest (P < 0.05) T4 (6.733). Ash bone content and P were similar (P > 0.05), however this indicates a tendency to diminution of mineralization in treatments without to cover the requirement of P in both growing periods. The results indicate high potential of UP for birds.
In order to study the genetic variability of the Criollo Limonero Breed, a dairy breed considered National Patrimony of Venezuela, 95 purebred animals were analyzed using 14 DNA microsatellites. The animals belonged to the local Carrasquero station, assigned to the National Institute of Agriculture Research of Zulia (INIA-Zulia) and located in the northwest of Zulia State. Average values of observed and expected heterocigocities (H O, H E), between families (HM O, HM E) respectively, exclusion probability (PE), Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) and number of alelles by locus were considered and discussed to measure the genetic diversity. The average of alleles by locus, H E and PIC were: 8.7; 0.689 and 0.651, respectively. H E ranged from 0.355 to 0.787 and PIC fluctuated from 0.302 to 0.757. The least polymorphic locus was ILST5 and the most polymorphic was the CSSM66. PE with the 14 markers was of 0.9962 and 0.9999 for one and both known parents, respectively. The results indicate that this set of markers are efficient to make paternity tests in this breed, it is also evident that there are heterozigosity levels indicating the existence of a high molecular diversity in this population, which should be maintained as a strategy for the conservation of the Criollo Limonero breed, a bovine genetic resource of Venezuela for animal production in the tropical regions.
The changes on the color parameters (L, a, b, DE, whiteness index) of sardine sheets during osmotic dehydration were analyzed at different temperatures and brine concentrations. Sardines (Sardinella aurita) were cut into sheets (20.1x15.0x6.4 mm³), color was measured and 175 groups with 4 sheets in each were formed. Seven groups were introduced simultaneously in an osmotic solution of a desired concentration and temperature for carry out osmotic dehydration, one group was removed at 20; 40; 60; 90; 120; 180 and 240 min, and color of sheets was determined. This procedure was performed for each test condition according to a 5x5 factorial design where the temperature and concentration were 30; 32; 34; 36 and 38°C, 0.15, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, and 0.27 g NaCl/g brine, respectively. Initial values for L (36.48 ± 0.77), a (6.47 ± 0.64), b (8.74 ± 0.49), DE (0) and WI (37.42 ± 0.69) were obtained. Final values ranged for L from 40 to 47, for a from 4.2 to 2.6, for b from 7.5 to 5.7, for WI from 39.5 to 45.0 and for DE from 5.3 to 10.4 according to dehydration conditions. Values for a and b decreased (P<0.05) with increasing both dehydration time and temperature while those for L, DE and WI index increased (P < 0.05). The decreases in a and b values were lesser with increasing temperature while increases in L, DE and WI values were higher. Models for prediction of color changes as functions of the conditions of osmotic dehydration were obtained. Study of the “queso de mano” (hand cheese) quality sold in girardot municipality, Aragua state, Venezuela http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592008000400014&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Se investigó las características físico-químicas y microbiológicas de 32 muestras de queso de mano provenientes de cuatro centros de mayor venta en el municipio Girardot, Edo. Aragua, Venezuela.
The physical-chemical and microbiological characteristics of 32 samples of hand cheese purchased in the four best sales centers in the Girardot Municipality, Aragua State, Venezuela, were studied. The average values for the physical-chemical evaluation were the following: 51.3% moisture; 49.40% (dwb) fat; 45.52% (dwb) protein; 3.74% (dwb) NaCl; pH 4.51 and 0.76% acidity. The bacteriological evaluation gave as average values: mesophilic aerobic bacteria, 4.3×10(9) colony-forming units per gram (CFU/g); total coliform, 2.2×10(6) most probable number per gram (MPN/g) and Staphylococcus spp 2.9×10(6) CFU/g, of which 25% recorded as coagulase-positive. The results obtained in the physical-chemical analysis showed that there was a important variation for each evaluated variable between each production or lot and among centers of sales. The above-mentioned may be due to multifactorial causes such as lack of standardization in the manufacturing procedure, inadequate handling in transportation and storage and deficiencies in the time-temperature control during storage. The results of the microbiological evaluation showed that for all the samples from the four centers studied, the microbial load was above the maximum values recommended by the Venezuelan norms COVENIN. Thereupon, the consumption of hand cheese in studied centers could represent a health hazard for consumer.
