In this work, the cadmium (CD) and temperature effect on the red cell osmotic fragility and blood cells count in the tropical fish Colossoma macropomum were evaluated. The fishes were exposed to 0.5 mg/L of cadmium chloride during 24 days and two temperatures (25 and 30°C). At 0; 10 and 24 days of Cd exposure, blood samples were taken from fishes to determine the osmotic fragility curve, the differential white cell and reticulocyte count. The erythrocytes osmotic fragility began at 90 mmol/L of NaCl and total hemolysis was observed at 10 mmol/L of NaCl. Lymphocytes were the more abundant cells (>62%). These cells increased in Cd-exposed fish; moreover, the lymphocytes absolute percentage (control and exposed) decrease at 24 days of experimentation, being more significant at 30°C. After the granulocytes acidophils, trombocytes were the third cellular type, they were not affect by Cd neither temperature. However, trombocyte absolute number increased than fishes at 25°C/24 d as fishes at 30°C/24. On the other hand, the Cd/30°C exposed fishes showed a significant increase of thrombocytes. Both, cadmium and temperature affect thrombocyte number. The reticulocytes decrease due to cadmium exposed fishes. A synergic effect is produced by Cd and temperature on trombocytes; however, these factors exert an individual effect in fish reticulocytes.
It was determined the concentration of fat and protein in the muscular tissue of 40 fish of each one of the species Pygocentrus cariba, Prochilodus mariae, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Piaractus brachypomus and Hypostomus plecostomus; captured in a lagoon flood of the middle Orinoco river using gillnets. The protein content and fat were determined by the methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemistry (AOAC), being considered an average in the concentration of fat for P. cariba of 0.30 ± 0.01%; 0.60 ± 0.01% for H. plecostomus; 0.65 ± 0.01% for P. mariae; 0.90 ± 0.01% for P. squamosissimus and 1.55 ± 0.01% for P. brachypomus. The average in the protein concentration was of 19.60 ± 0.10% for P. mariae; 19.70 ± 0.13% for P. squamosissimus 19.70 ± 0.09% for H. plecostomus; 19.80 ± 0.15% for P. cariba and 19.80 ± 0.15% for P. brachypomus. A variance analysis (ANOVA) and a later test of Duncan it demonstrated differences statistically significant in the content of fat among species, with the bigger values of fat corresponding to P. brachypomus and P. squamosissimus and the smallest to P. cariba. The protein contents did not present significant differences. Seemingly the species P. cariba, P. mariae, P. squamosissimus, P. brachypomus and H. plecostomus, in general have a low content of fat and a high protein concentration, depending their concentrations mainly of the food, reproduction time and migration. This work constitutes a contribution to the knowledge of the chemical composition of these species, some of commercial importance as P. squamosissimus, P. brachypomus and P. mariae and other ecologically important as P. cariba and H. plecostomus. Coprotiella Venezuelensis, a new record of cleistothecia genus of the ascomycetes in the world http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592009000100004&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt A new record, Coprotiella venezuelensis was isolate on rhinoceros dung collected at south park Maracaibo zoo in Zulia State, Venezuela.
The described reference values for creatinine in dogs are variable, and for its establishment, the volume of the muscle mass where they belong has not been taken into account. For that reason, the influence of the body mass on the values of serum creatinine in a sample of 123 adult normal weighted dogs was investigated. The dogs were separated in three groups according to their body mass. The technique of Jaffé was used to determine the serum creatinine and a veterinary electronic balance with rank of measurement 0.3 to 300 kg was also used to calculate the body mass. The creatinine values found were: Dogs of Class I (<10 kg): 53.0 ± 18.6 µmol/L (0.60 ± 0.21 mg/dL); Dogs of Class II (10 - 25 kg): 77.8 ± 26.5 µmol/L (0.88 ± 0.30 mg/dL); and Dogs of Class III (>25 kg): 98.1 ± 32.7 µmol/L (1.11 ± 0.37 mg/dL). Statistic differences were found between creatinine levels (P<0.0001). The Spearman ratio between body mass and serum creatinine was determined, obtaining a high positive and significant association between them (r=0.6037; P<0.00001). These results conclude that it is necessary to establish a reference value rank for serum creatinine in connection to the body mass, so that greater certainty can be given when originating and interpreting results for normal dogs against those with kidney malfunctions.
Soft or infrared laser is widely used by their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, biostimulant and curative effects, specially on veterinary clinical procedures destined to treat injury and to improve scarring process. The actual study has the object to detect the AsGa IR laser effects (10miliwatt, 780 nanómero, 2 joule /cm²) on natural rabbit Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) tissue. Ten rabbit specimens from 2.5 Kg average weight reared and nurtured under the same conditions were used as the experimentation subjects in this study. Laser irradiation was performed at the right TMJ of each specimen only, while the other side was left as a control. After each specimen sacrifice their respectives TMJ were removed and dissected having cared to measure on the articular disk, mandibular condyle and mandibular fossa samples their respective diameters employing a digital calibrator. At the same time several samples were taken from the articular structures to perform a hystologycal analysis. Important changes in size and dimension were found on the anatomy of the irradiated structures specially at the level of both mandibular disc and fossa. Instead by optical microscopy were detected several variations on the collagen disposition as also some alterations on the cell layer distribution at the level of the articular disk and mandibular condyle surface. Finally,it can be concluded the soft laser induced macro and microscopic morphological alterations on natural rabbit TMJ tissue.
Leptin is a 146 amino acids hormone that it is secreted predominantly by white adipocytes. It has been associated to different productive and reproductive traits of farm’s animals. The aims of this study were to determine polymorphisms of three molecular markers of the leptin gene: A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP), the microsatellites ST (or BM1500) at the 3’UTR region, and WD at the 5’UTR. The amplification was made for PCR technique and was run in agarosa gel after the restriction for SNP and polyacrylamide gel for microsattelites. In order to establish the association of these markers with body weight, rib eyes area, and backfat thickness, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used and data was obtained using ultrasound images. Samples were taken from 252 animals of three creole and one Colombian breed cattle out of different nuclei from Colombia. For the SNP, T allele frequency was larger in Sanmartinero breed and lower in Chino Santandereano breed. For the microsatellite BM 1500 five different alleles were found (136, 138, 144, 146 and 148). Among these, alleles 136 (between 0.31 y 0.76) and 144 (between 0.15 and 0.65) appeared more often. Also, in WD 13 alleles were identified, being allele 183 (between 0.038 and 0.630) and allele 177 (between 0.14 and 0.46) the most common. Finally, for the Velasquez breed the only association found occurred between the microsatellite ST allele 146 and larger body weight in individuals between 18 - 24 months (P £ 0.05).
An experiment with 46 pigs from crossbred sows (Landrace x Yorshire) was done to determine the effect of four housing systems: outdoor (OD), deep bedding (DB), pens (LP) and cages (LC) on performance of pigs born and finishing in each. A completely randomized design was used whose treatments were shaped by the types of housing. Six repetitions in OD, LP and LC and 5 in DB, for a total of 23 experimental units (female and male castrated for site). were made. Found differences (P< 0.05) in all the variables assessed in the period born-weaning: Birth weight, weaning, increased (IW) and the average daily gain (ADG). At initiation, the final weight (FW) and IW showed difference (P< 0.05), while the ADG was similar (P> 0.01) in all housing. In growth phase effect (P< 0.05) was found in all variables evaluated: FW, IW, feed intake (FI), ADG and feed conversion (FC). In the finishing phase, the housing had effect (P<0.05) on the FW, IW, FI and ADG, while the FC showed no difference. In the evaluation integral of growing-finishing phase it were differences observed (P< 0.05) in FI and FC while the IW, ADG and the carcass quality did not follow the same behavior (P> 0.05). It concludes that the performance of pigs weaning and initiation are similar in traditional and alternative housing, but during the growth phase is difficult in the alternative lower IW and less efficiency in the FC. However, at the finishing phase the differences between the housing it minimizing both performance and the carcass quality is equivalent regardless of the housing system. Effect of the nutritional substrate in the chemical composition and nutritives value of red worm (eisenia spp.) Las variables químicas cuantificadas fueron: materia seca (MS), proteína cruda (PC), proteína verdadera (PV), proteína soluble (PS), grasas totales (GrT), ácidos grasos saturados (AGS), ácidos grasos mono-insaturados (AGI), ácidos grasos poli-insaturados (AGP), energía bruta (EB), fracción fibrosa (FDN y FDI), perfil aminoacídico, minerales (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn) y ceniza (Cz).
Chemical composition and nutritive value of Red Worm (Eisenia spp.) dehydrated meal were evaluated previously fed with 4 substrates characterized in dry base (BS) [S0: bovine manure 100%; S1: bovine manure 97% + banana cook stump 1% + remainder of bovines feed 2%; S2: bovine manure 95% + cane stump 3% + remainder of bovines feed 2%; S3: bovine manure 96% + cane stump 3% + banana cook stump 1%]; an experiment was carried out in Trujillo State, Venezuela, using a randomized design and five replicates per treatment. The quantified chemical variables were: dry matter (MS), crude protein (PC), true protein (PV), soluble protein (PS), total fats (GrT), saturated fatty acids (AGS), mono-unsaturated fatty acids (AGI), poly-unsaturated fatty acids (AGP), gross energy (EB), fibrous fraction (FDN and FDI), aminoacidic profile, minerals (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn) and ash (Cz). Pepsin and pancreatin digestibility (MS, PC and MO), in vitro ruminal digestibility (MS, PC and MO) and in situ ruminal degradability (MS, PC and MO) were determined. Only significant differences were observed in ash, Fe and Mn contents (P<0.05). High protein concentrations (>53% MS), energetic fraction and amino acids levels were observed. Not important variations in the chemical composition and nutritive value of Eisenia spp. meals with tried substrates were observed. This source could be satisfactorily used as proteinic supplement in animal nutrition. The kelp macrocystis pyrifera as nutritional supplement for goats http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592009000100010&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt The present study was aimed to evaluate Macrocystis pyrifera (MP) meal as a nutritional supplement for goats. There is an increasing interest to look at nutritional alternatives to guarantee a continuous supply of good quality forage for goats, in many communities around the world. Given its abundance and chemical composition, the algae M. pyrifera is an important potential resource as animal feed. Three diets with 10, 20, and 30% of MP meal concentrations and a control diet, with no algae, were evaluated. Four rumen cannulated goats, housed individually in metabolism cages, were used. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 Latin-Square. Feed and water intake, excreted urine and faeces, were measured. Digestibility in vivo, dry matter (DM) disappearance, and the metabolic variables of pH and ammoniacal nitrogen in the rumen, were determined. There was no significant difference in the feed intake but there was in water intake and urine excreted. No significant difference in digestibility in vivo among diets (P>0.05) was found. A significant difference (P<0.05) for degradability in situ was found for the algae diets containing 10 and 30% MP concentrations at 96 hours of sampling (78.3 and 82.2%). The raw algae in situ digestibility was 77%. A potential degradability of 87.3% was obtained with 30% MP diet. The highest effective degradation was obtained at an estimated rate of 0.02 h-1. Ruminal pH was higher (P<0.05) in all MP treatments (10% MP: 6.83, 20% MP: 6.85, 30% MP: 6.91). As suggested by the results, M. pyrifera represents a good unconventional feeding as a nutritional supplement for goats.
The effect of ultrasonic treatment on some functional properties of egg white http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592009000100011&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt This work studied the effect of treatment with a high frequency ultrasound bath (40 kHz and a power of 80 W.) on the pH, foaming capacity and stability of the foam of the white of hens eggs (sample 1/120 hours post laying and sample 2/24 hours post laying). Exposure time was at varied intervals of 0, 5, 10 and 15 mins at 20°C. The samples were stored in refrigeration at 4°C for 3 days. The comparative study of the data was carried out using variance analysis(ANOVA) and surface response analysis (RSA); where it was found that the pH did not show any significant changes(P<0.05) due to the effect of the treatment and remained during storage. On the other hand, the results showed that treatment with ultrasound for ten minutes increased the foaming capacity by 15.84 and 13.07% in samples 1 and 2, respectively. However, the stability of the foam in both samples was seen to diminish by 13.89 and 8.50%.
Genetic and environmental factors affecting productive performance in a brown swiss herd in the tropic: 2.
In order to evaluate genetic and environmental effects on calving interval (CI) and its relationship with 305-day milk yield (305L) in a Brown Swiss herd, data of 1343 calving intervals and 1890 lactations from 589 cows-years were collected on an intensive handling ranch located in Carabobo State (Venezuela) between 1995 and 2001. Mixed models and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses were carried out to evaluate environmental fixed effects. Models included: calving year (CY: 1995,…, 2001), calving month (CM: Ene.,…, Dic.), lactation number (LN: 1,…,7 or more) and age of dam at calving (DCA: 22,…,156). Univariate and bivariate animal models and Multiple Trait Derivate - Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood (DFREML) were used to estimate heritability (h²), to calculate repeteability (r i) and to estimate correlations between CI and 305L. CY, CM, LN and DCA were important sources of variation (P<0.05). Adjusted mean was 418.7 ± 2.6 days. Estimates of h² (± standard error) and r i were 0.05 ± 0.044 and 0.10, respectively. Estimates of genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations between CI and 305L were 0.69, 0.004 and 0.09, respectively. These estimates indicate a positive association between both variables. Thus, the increase in the capacity of milk production of the cows will result in less reproductive efficiency.
In order to study the relationship between the levels of technology and productivity indicators of dual-purpose cattle farms located in the Jesus E. Lossada, La Cañada de Urdaneta y Rosario de Perijá Municipalities, 102 farms were selected by random sampling and K-mean algorithm to create the technological groups. Three technological groups (TGs) were identified: low (TG1), middle (TG2) and high (TG3). Later, the partial productivity means of different groups were compared by variance analysis and the Duncan test was utilized to evaluate the differences among the means. The TG3 showed high partial productivity in several indicators but only milk liters by total-cow and by labor productivity were statistically significant (P<0.05). Also, economical indicators such as income by total-cow, total income, profit and gross profit resulted statistically different from TG2 and TG1. These results allow concluding that TG3 showed a higher herd and labor productivity and lower cost-income relationship due to differences in the farm management of TG3 with respect to other groups. There is a straightforward relationship among technological levels and economical indicators. Profit and gross profit increases as the farm move into higher technological level. An alternative method for evaluation of resistance to low ph and bile salts in probiotic characterization of lactobacillus reuteri strains: A technical note http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-22592009000100014&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt A considerable amount of attention has been focused on the use of lactobacilli as probiotics. The use of microorganisms as probiotics must meet certain criteria, among these; the resistance to low pH and bile salts is of great importance. Different procedures have been designed to evaluate tolerance to gastrointestinal transit. Since resistance to low pH and bile salts is critical in the evaluation of probiotic strains, the aim of this study was to compare resistance to bile salts for 20 strains of porcine Lactobacillus reuteri that had been isolated from healthy pigs, using two different procedures based on exposure to low pH. Statistical analysis revealed no difference in resistance of the strains to bile salts whether pH was low or not. The use of low pH prior to exposure to bile salts therefore more closely represents physiological conditions that should be used for the evaluation of potential porcine probiotic lactobacilli. Further studies using digestive enzymes are required to evaluate resistance to gastrointestinal transit, since it is an important factor in the evaluation of strains with potential probiotic activity.
