(PTT-2).
A study has been carried out in order to investigate the effect of thickness and post heat treatment of an autocatalytic electroless Ni-P deposit (EN), plated on an annealed AISI 1045 steel, on the fatigue behavior under rotating bending conditions. The thickness of the coating was of approximately 7, 17 and 37 μm. The post heat treatments were: firstly, at 200°C for 60 min. (PHT-1) and secondly at 200°C for 60 min. followed at 400°C for 60 min. (PHT-2). It has been determined that the deposits have a mean hardness of 663 and 1044 KHN50, after PHT-1 and PHT-2 respectively. Also, it has been found that the flow stress and the ultimate tensile true stress decrease slightly, whereas the true fracture stress decreases significantly as the thickness of the deposits increases for both PHT. It has been determined that the deposit of 7 μm in thickness after PHT-1 does not give rise to any significant change in fatigue life, as compared with the uncoated substrate. Also, it has been observed that as the thickness of the EN plating increases, the fatigue life of the coated samples decreases markedly. The deposits subjected to the PHT-2 treatment give rise to a more pronounced decrease in fatigue life as compared with the deposits subjected to the PHT-1, although such an effect is less marked as the thickness of the coatings increases.
The recrystallization process of a commercial 0.04%C Al-killed steel, cold rolled up to 80% subjected to a annealing heat treatment at variable heating rates was evaluated in the present study. For this purpose, samples were isothermally annealed at various heating rates (12ºC/h, 20ºC/h, 40ºC/h and 650ºC/min) and then soaked at 700ºC for 15 hours. The microstructural evolution of the samples followed by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, showed that the recrystallization process took place between 600 and 650ºC for the samples heated at low rates (12ºC/h, 20ºC/h and 40ºC/h), and the grain structure developed was the so called “pancake” type. The grain size for these samples showed an insignificant growth during the holding stage at 700ºC. On the other hand, with the samples heated at 650ºC/min, the recrystallizaction occurred on reaching 700ºC, the grain structure was more equiaxial and the grain size changed appreciably during the holding stage. The spheroidization process of cementite occurred in significant amounts during the holding stage at 700ºC. The precipitation and coarsening of AlN particles were also evaluated during the holding stage at 700ºC.
The hot ductility and fracture behaviour of a C-Mn steel susceptible to transversal cracking in the corners is studied. In order to evaluate the influence of residual elements and inclusions, this steel was compared with another one with the same main composition obtained by electro-slag from almost pure iron. Tensile tests at temperatures ranging from 1000ºC to 650ºC and an initial strain rate of 1·10-3s-1 were carried out for reheated samples of both steels. The reduction in area of the samples tested to fracture was used as a measure of the hot ductility. For each temperature, the ductility behaviour was related both to the phases and to the fracture mechanisms present. For this purpose, the fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy.
The aim of this work is to establish the state of the art related to a tribological focus on tool steels with different duplex treatments based on nitriding (gaseous or ionic) + hard thin coatings by plasma assisted techniques. Tool steels are used to forge and machine other materials, and are thus designed to withstand extreme conditions, such as high contact loads, high temperatures and aggressive environments. Duplex treatments offer excellent possibilities to improve tool steel performance. Although their beneficial characteristics to improve service life are well known, at present several combinations (and several tool steel specifications) make it difficult to obtain a unique and universal duplex treatment. For this reason duplex treatments require a broad knowledge of tribological performance. This review is focused in terms related to adhesion and tribological performance of duplex treatments.
Changes in the average surface roughness of hot and cold rolled low carbon steel strips were analyzed by two different techniques: atomic force microscopy and optical interferometry. The values of roughness were related with rolling speed and force to evaluate their relationship. It was found that both methods show the same trend, but with a different magnitude, a feature that is attributed to both the area being measured and the resolution and precision of the different techniques. It is concluded that either method yields useful advantages in this type of study. Dynamics of two-phase downward flows in submerged entry nozzles and their influence on the two-phase flow in the mold http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-40652005000100006&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Gas-liquid flows inside the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) of a slab mold and their influence on the flow field in the mold were studied using video recording, mathematical simulations and Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) approaches. Coalescence-breakup phenomena of bubbles in liquid steel flowing through a slab mold were studied using a water model. At low gas loads (ratio of mass flow rates of gas and liquid in the submerged entry nozzle) bubble dynamics consist of coalescence-breakup and dragged processes from the SEN until close to the narrow wall. At high gas loads, bubbles are accumulated close to the narrow wall where they coalesce, break and ascend toward the bath surface forming bubble swarms or descend along the narrow wall by dragging forces exerted by liquid phase on the surfaces of the bubbles. These swarms consist of coalescing bubbles and agglomerating groups of bubbles. The presence of bubbles in the flow decreases the magnitudes of vorticity values in the flow field of mono-phase flows. Thus, to increase the casting speed, the injection of argon should be adjusted to an appropriate level to avoid an excess of liquid entrainment to the flux phase. Bubbly and annular flows in the SEN yield structurally-uncoupled and structurally coupled flows in the mold, respectively. High gas loads at high casting rates lead to increases of bubble population and bubbles sizes due to coalescence processes whose rate exceeds that of their breakup. The presence of gas bubbles or gas layers inside the SEN lead to periodical twisting of the liquid flow that induces biased flows through both ports yielding uneven flows in the mold. A multiphase mathematical model predicts acceptably well the flow dynamics of two-phase flows inside the SEN.
Using hot rolling simulation by means of hot torsion tests, non-recrystallization temperature (Tnr) and phase transformation temperatures during cooling (Ar3, Ar1) have been determined for a Nb-microalloyed steel under several deformation conditions (interpass time, pass strain). The three above mentioned rolling critical temperatures have been determined by application of the Jonas et al. method, consisting in the graphical representation of Mean Flow Stress (MFS) against the inverse of temperature. This method allows us to measure simultaneously a magnitude known as "accumulated stress", which is a simple and useful way of quantifying the progressive strengthening of austenite when deformed between Tnr and Ar3, without the need to perform metallographic studies. It has been found that for those rolling conditions where accumulated stress at the end of hot rolling has the highest values (shortest interpass times and lowest strains), final ferritic grain is finer. As long as the interpass time or the pass strain applied increases, accumulated stress drops and the final grain is coarser. The temperature interval limited by Tnr and Ar3 establishes the limits where the final industrial rolling steps should be accomplished in order to obtain a strengthened austenite, higher accumulated stress values and therefore finer final microstructures and improved mechanical properties.
Samples of AISI 304 stainless steel were nitrided during 30 and 40 minutes at a temperature of 400º C in a chamber, employing the incandescent discharge method. A pulsed DC source was employed, with 400 V and 100Hz, and a gaseous environment with a 1:4 N2-H2 ratio. For the plasma nitriding time of 30 min, a single phase of expanded austenite (S-phase) was obtained in the modified surface. For 40 min of exposure time, the presence of incipient Fe4N and CrN compounds in the more external zone of the surface was also observed. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), the depth of the nitrided zone was examined. Both the microhardness tests on the nitrided surface and the SEM studies showed the same nitriding depth, ~24 µm, also the same for the two nitriding times. It was determined that the hardness for the S-phase, around 1500 HK0,025, is five times greater that the one for the steel without nitriding. Both the wear behavior and the friction features of the modified surfaces were studied by sliding wear tests under pin-on-disk configuration, at room temperature without lubrication, using AISI 52100 steel and alumina balls, respectively, as static counterparts. The balls used are of 6 mm in diameter. As additional parameters for the test, velocity of 0,1m.s-1, load of 5N and sliding distance of 1000 m were chosen. Using the AISI 52100 steel, the wear behavior mainly presents a combination of abrasion, adhesion and oxidation mechanisms, achieving a friction coefficient (µ) of 0.55 for all the tribological pairs. With alumina balls, only an abrasive wear mechanism for all the pairs was observed, and the respective friction coefficient was slightly greater than the first case, and equal to 0.6. For all the sliding wear tests, it is shown that the nitriding process improves the wear resistance of the stainless steel, because there is no significant difference between the loss in volume for each nitriding time.
