In the present work the theory of the Three-dimensional Geodesic Models is developed, its mathematical formulation and the conversion between Systems of Coordinates like solutions fit to the establishment of Environmental Control Systems of Regions and Cities where their natural terrain features and economic importance require an Plane Rectangular Coordinates System to link detailed surveying and Civil Engineering and Topographic scales for the correct development of applications in GIS.
The paper presents a methodology to perform a simplified stochastic analysis of discrete linear structure responses under seismic actions. The structural dynamic response is determined in time domain by means of modal analysis, and the simplified stochastic analysis is performed by means of the Point Estimate Method. Structural system’s mass and stiffness are considered as independent stochastic variables. The development of an application example allows us illustrating the implementation of the proposed methodology. The results obtained with the Monte Carlo Simulation Method allow us to validate the methodology as well as to emphasize its advantages for practical purposes. Experimental development of the scuffing load carrying capacity of pseudo-lubricated materials.
This research corresponds to the first experimental validations of the mechanochemical friction (MQf) for the simple and direct verified calculation of the s-LCC: Scuffing Load Carrying Capacity, which are interacting the following: base material, superficial treatment, lubricant additive and operation conditions. The good obtained correlation confirms the true non-equilibrium irreversible thermodynamic nature of the wrongly so called friction "coefficient". In other words, it is confirmed that the empirical on-site friction, or mechanochemical friction, based on the notion of the 3rd tribological body, is-NOT- a thermally dominated phenomenon. With this new mechanochemical paradigm, it would not be necessary to extend beyond a few minutes (even seconds), the s-LCC projection technique for MQf. The new method is on-site applicable (to clients).
This study shows the characterization of a superduplex stainless steel SAF 2507 after aging treatments at 875 and 970 °C. The first treatment promotes the precipitation of the sigma phase and the second one, its dissolution. The microstructural evaluation of both treatments was carried out by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed an increase of the sigma phase fraction with the time of aging treatment at 875 °C, and an almost complete transformation of the ferrite phase in sigma and secondary austenite. On the other hand, increasing the time of treatment at 970 °C promotes a reduction of the sigma phase and the corresponding increase of the ferrite phase fraction. Furthermore, the study also showed the effect of sigma phase precipitation on the hardness.
The fractal nature of fracture surfaces in metallic alloys is discussed on the basis of the present investigation and some previous results for seven aluminum alloys and three stainless steels. Four aluminum alloys were of the 7000-series; two of the 2000-series and the Al-0,57Si-2,03Ge alloy. Two stainless steels were austenoferritic: the duplex SAF 2205 and the superduplex SAF 2507. The other stainless steel was the austenitic 304 type. The relation between the fracture mechanisms, fractal dimension and mechanical properties, particularly toughness; is explained from some of the current empirical and theoretical models, whereas the main methods for fractal characterization of metallic fracture surfaces were reviewed. The results related with the observed changes in toughness, roughness and fractal dimension are discussed and it is shown that the higher the toughness the rougher the fracture surface, which is related with an increase in fractal dimension. Fractal dimension values depend on the method of experimental measurement, but show the same general trend.
By applying the techniques of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Electrical resistivity (ρ) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out a study of phase transformation in two types of microalloyed low carbon steels. The non isothermal transformation kinetics was studied on normalized samples and on austenitized samples at 1100 ºC for 30, 60 and 120 minutes followed by quenching in water at 20 ºC. DSC curves for normalized and quenched steels show different behaviors demonstrating its sensitivity to microstructural change. In both cases was reported three endothermic and three exothermic transformations, corresponding the exothermic peaks to the precipitation of carbon-rich phases in different proportions with respect to the iron matrix, while the first endothermic peak is associated to the dissolution of cementite in the normalized samples and to the martensite in the quenched samples, and the two very specific peaks was associated with the transition from ferrite magnetic to ferrite non-magnetic and α → γ, allotropic transformation, respectively. The good definition of the endothermic peaks permitted to calculate the fraction transformed and evaluates their respective activation energy. The resistivity as a function of austenitizing time present a downward trend to a plateau, indicative of the fraction of carbon atoms trapped in solid solution and thus associated with the fraction of martensite formed. Micrographs obtained by Scanning electron microscopy showed a ferritic-pearlitic microstructure in the normalized samples and a martensitic microstructure on quenching samples.
The electrodeposition of polyaniline (PANI) on carbon steel plates (AISI 1010) was performed in order to study the PANI’s behavior as possible hydrogen sensor and corrosion protection. The deposition was obtained using a cyclic voltammetry technique (CV) in an aqueous solution containing 0.3 M oxalic acid and 0.1 M aniline. The PANI deposition on steel was achieved after 15 cycles, to obtain its reduced state (Emeraldine, green) and 15.5 cycles to obtain its oxidized state (Pernigraniline, blue). Hydrogen permeation tests were carried out on steel sheets by the classical Devanathan-Stachursky technique to estimate the flow of hydrogen which diffuses through the steel. For the evaluation of PANI coating as a sensor the cathodic half of permeation cell was used. This permitted to follow possible changes in color of PANI during hydrogen permeation. The PANI coating showed a great potential as hydrogen sensor, experimenting changes in color due to its variation in oxidation states due to the presence of diffused hydrogen atoms. PANI was evaluated as corrosion protector using electrochemical techniques: potentiodynamic polarization and immersion, both of them in 3.5%NaCl solution. The PANI coating protected the steel cathodically, and it had an acceptable behavior during immersion, at least in the short period of evaluation.
This work arises from the need to estimate the condensate profile of a natural gas well tubing, as part of the development of a commercial simulation package, that employs the thermodynamic models proposed by Soave, Peng-Robinson and Kabaddi-Danner to estimate the condensate and condensed water formation in natural gas well tubing was studied. A calculation algorithm to estimate the condensate profile using tubing segments was designed using the Phi-Phi equilibrium model. The study included the development of the mass balance equations for vapor-liquid equilibrium (VL) and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium (VLL), and the use of cubic equations of state to determine the fugacity coefficients and the equilibrium constant of each substance; the Wilson equation was used to determine the initial values of the equilibrium constants. The obtained results using each cubic equation were compared with field data, it was determined that the error in the condensate estimation was less than 20% for vapor-liquid equilibrium and less than 6% for vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium. The estimated error for the difference between the results obtained by each equation of state was less than 7%. The Kabaddi-Danner equation of state and the model of three-phase equilibrium represent with high reliability the phase equilibrium of single-chain hydrocarbons and water systems.
