SUMMARY In order to evaluate the effects of maize meal by-product (MM), wheat middling (WM), and bovine tallow (T) added to poultry litter (PL) on the productive response of yearlings with restricted grazing, an experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Experimental Field in Maracay, Venezuela. A completely randomized design with a factorial 2x2 arrange was used to compare concentrates with 50% PL with or without 4% of tallow and complemented to 100% with the addition of MM or WM. Twenty animals of both sexes were used with 151±17 kg average of initial weight and 12±1.5 months old. The trial lasted for 90 days and the animals were stalled in individual pens and were allowed to graze during four hours on paddocks of Cynodon nlemfuensis grass. Concentrate intake was influenced by either by-product with average daily consumption 0.33 kg/100 kg live weight higher on treatments with WM (P<0.0166). A possible explanation of the lower intake of concentrates with MM is due to higher energy content and its negative effect an intake in diets with high level of concentrate. The high MM starch content and its negative effect on fiber utilization also could have reduced the intake. Live weight gains were not different in diets with WM or MM in spite of the lower intake of the latter, possibly because a higher energy quality of this by product. The addition of T did not affect any of variables analyzed GROWTH OF ALL-FEMALE AND MIXED SEX TROUT IN A VENEZUELAN FISH HATCHERY http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692003000100002&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN Este trabajo se realizó en el Campo Experimental Truchícola La Mucuy, ubicado en el Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada en Mérida, Venezuela, a una altitud de 2300 msnm.
SUMMARY This research was carried out in the Experimental Station La Mucuy, located at 2300 masl in the National Park "Sierra Nevada" near Mérida, Venezuela. The water is from glacier origin. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth of all-female and mixed-sex trout. The all-female trout represented the experimental group, while the control group was represented by the offspring of the crossing between normal male and normal female. The average weight and total length of the all-female trout were 106.92 g, and 17.33 cm (n = 1440), respectively. The control group reached values of 58.77 g and 14.37 cm of weight and length, respectively. The weight and length of the all-female trout were significantly greater than control group (P<0.05). The growth of the all-female trout and the control group showed similarities during the first months of the experiment, but differences showed up after 207 days. Growth of the experimental group was 43.57% higher than control group. The all-female trout represent promissory material for trout farming because its superior growth in relation to mixed-sex trout, which constitute the traditional farming system in Venezuela.
SUMMARY The sex reversion technique is widespread in many countries of North America and Europe to get all-female trouts. The development of these techniques is desirable because trout males reach their gonad maturity at the first year of age, while the female do it after two years of age. The objective of this research was to masculinizate trouts to get genotypic females with capacity to produce semen and behave as a functional male. The sex reversion is produced by feeding the animals for 932 °C/days with food containing 3 mg/kg of 17 α-methyl testosterone. We found 57% sex reversal female, 27% with atrophic gonad, and 16% were not affected by the treatment. The offspring of the crossing between normal female and sex reversal female were 100% females, while the control group displayed a sex ratio of 1:1. The products of this research are of mayor importance for the trout farmer in Venezuela because this technology would allow reducing the fattening cycle, increasing the profit.
SUMMARY Management under traditional production system were selected twenty two goats at postpartum from two farms located in Los Ranchos, Lara State, Venezuela, to evaluate the productive performance (body weight, body condition, milk production and hematocrit blood levels) due to supplementation of a feeding mixture. It was used a totally randomized design and the data were analyzed by a T-test. The goats were assigned to two groups: Control, grazing traditional vegetation, and Experimental, grazing the traditional vegetation plus 50 g/an/d of a supplement. This supplement consisted of (%): corn (50), molasses (30), minerals (15) and ammonium sulphate (5). The body weight variation, body condition and hematocrit level of goats postpartum, were not different during the 60 days of this trial. Hematocrit increased significantly (P<0.05), in both group sixty days postpartum. Milk production showed a highly significant increase (16%) when the goats were supplemented.
SUMMARY The presence of the legume Teramnus labialis SW cv. dark seed in the soil cover of citric plantations seems to reduce ovine browsing to the branches of the fruit-bearing significantly. However, this behavior could have been determined by previous adaptation of the animals to the consumption of this species, and palatability of the legume. In the present trial, we determined the influence of adaptation time to the grazing environment in the ovine behavior during the grazing of the cover in the citric plantation. The experiment was carried out during a period of seven weeks, in 2 ha of Citrus sinensis (L) Osbeck cv. Valencia Late (Sweet Orange tree). It was used a complete randomized design with 3 treatments and 6 repetitions (ovine) for each of the following treatments: 1, and 2: twenty one, and fifteen days of adaptation to the grazing environment, respectively, 3: without adaptation to the environment. We evaluated the botanical composition of the covers as well as the browsing and grazing behavior of ovine. We did not found effect of the ovine adaptation to the environment on its grazing behavior. Animal browsing was similar in all treatments, with values means around 0,001 browsing per animal per grazing hour, and duration of 10 seconds per browsing. It was also evident in all treatments a typical grazing behavior, where the highest percentage of time was dedicated to graze- move, under the citrus tree canopy and although the animal moved around the entire area in search of food, more time was spent in the front and central sections of the paddock SELECTION OF WOODY SPECIES IN A TROPICAL DRY FOREST FOR ADULT BOVINES USING FECAL HISTOLOGICAL ANALYSIS http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692003000100006&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN Para determinar la selección del follaje de especies forrajeras leñosas en la dieta de vacunos manejados en silvopastoreo del bosque seco tropical durante el día y en potreros de gramíneas durante la noche, en la época lluviosa, se usó la técnica histológica del análisis fecal.
SUMMARY To determine the selection of forage woody species foliage in the diet of dual purpose cows handled as a agro forestry system in a tropical dry forest during the day and in grass paddocks during the night, in the rainy season, a histological techniques of the fecal analysis was used, it was compared the epidermal fragments present in the feces with the epidermal reference patterns elaborated with the foliage (adaxial and abaxial epidermis) of 17 species that for visual observation were consumed by the animals. A group of 28 dual purpose lactating cows was used. For the coloration of the epidermal fragments toluidina blue (1%) was used, and then for its identification the characteristics anatomical structures were taken in to account (presence of hair or trichomes, epidermal typical cells and size and form of the stomas). There was demonstrated that 12 reference species appeared in animals feaces, where Apidosperma cuspa resulted with the higher relative frequency, 15.5% of their fragments appeared in the feces. The possibly fact that some species could not be identified in the feces, It could be related to the absence of vegetable protective elements in its morphology during the traffic in the ruminants digestive tract or to the lack of refringence to the used coloring. The relative frequency in feces of the woody species turned out to be higher (83%) to the value found for the grass (17%) in these management conditions. The foliage of the tropical dry forest is an alternative resource for ruminant feeding. STRUCTURAL DIAGNOSTICS IN THE CATTLE DUAL PURPOSE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN THE MUNICIPALITY ALBERTO ARVELO TORREALBA IN THE BARINAS STATE OF VENEZUELA http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-72692003000100007&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar un diagnóstico estructural en 30 fincas de doble propósito en el municipio Alberto Arvelo Torrealba, estado Barinas, Venezuela.
SUMMARY The objective of this work was to carry out a structural diagnostic in 30 raising cattle farms under a double purpose system in the Alberto Arvelo Torrealba municipality, Barinas state in Venezuela. It was applied the methodology of technical, structural, functional diagnoses and continuous improvement in the systems of production of milk and meat with bovine. The data were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods using the factorial analysis of multiple correspondences and the upward hierarchical classification, in the statistical package CSTAT. There were considered the following variables: Income for milk, staying time of the producer in the property, females in the herd, cows with medium grade of European inheritance, calves with more than a half of European inheritance, size of the property, working capital, and the quality of the milk (acidity). The analysis generated three modalities with different intensities of milk production: 1) eight properties with directionality toward the meat production, defined as double purpose meat-milk, 2) eighteen properties with directionality for the production of milk classified as double purpose milk-meat, and 3) four properties with a tendency to look for a balance in the production of milk and meat, identified as indefinite double purpose. The variables with higher contribution for the conformation of the productive were: 24.50, 17.42, 14.03 and 12.69% for the calves with European inheritance, females in the herd, milk and working capital, respectively. The study showed that the systems of double purpose cattle raising in the area under study were structurally variable. The structural studies are indispensable for the knowledge in detail and the establishment of bases to foment the transformations and their continuous improvement
