(10º17’N y 67º37’O).
To evaluate the nutritive value of hydroponics forage corn (HFC) and the effects on bovine weight change, it was carried out an experiment in experimental farm located in Maracay, Aragua state, Venezuela at 463 masl, 10º17’N and 67º37’W. The total annual rainfall was 1,013 mm with a mean temperature of 26ºC. The soils were loam texture with 12 ppm of phosphorous and pH 8.5. Ten growing bovines crossbreed 5/8 Holstein x Brahman were used, separated in different corrals (five animals/corral), under a stalled system. Two treatments were evaluated: Control, animals fed with grass only, and animals fed with 70% grass plus 30% of hydroponics forage corn. The animals were previously fed with the experimental diets for a period of 7 days and then for seven continuous weeks. The variables were: nutritive value of the grass and the HFC, nitrogen content in blood and semen, and weight change. The design was a complete randomize, where each animal was a repetition. The results showed that the nutritive value of the HFC was higher than the grass with a high protein content in the leaves and the whole plant (33.5 and 19.4%, respectively) (P<0.01). Also, higher mineral content was observed in the HFC. Significant differences were observed (P<0.05) between treatments for the consumption and use of the HFC. The nitrogen content in blood and semen of the animals showed no significant differences (1.3 and 0.7%, respectively) from the control. The weight gain was higher in the animals that consumed grass plus HFC (1.123 g/animal/d). It is concluded that the HFC could be a feeding alternative for the growing bovines in stalled conditions as a supplement in the base diet.
With the purpose of evaluating the effect of two phosphorus sources on pasture yield and beef production, it was carried out an experiment in the central savannas of Cojedes state, Venezuela. Treatments were randomly distributed as, T1: Control (no P), T2: 300 kg/ha of partially acidulated rock phosphate (PARP), and T3: 500 kg/ha of rock phosphate (RP). The variables were: dry matter pasture yield, crude protein, crude fiber content, calcium content, P content in grass, soil, blood and feces, and beef production by area. No significant differences were found among treatments (P>0.05) for any of the variables; however, it was observed an increase in y matter yield when pasture received P (2.4 and 2.6 t/ha/cut for PARP and RP, respectively), compared to control (2.3 t/ha/cut). Also, animal production by area was higher with PARP treatment (206.4 kg/ha). It was not observed a response to P fertilization, possibly due to the lack of some other macro and micro nutrients, mainly nitrogen. Phosphorus applications improved the balance of this element in the system, which would indicate the need of periodical P fertilization to avoid pasture degradation. Effect of grazing methods on modulated savannas: III.
The research was carried out in the Experimental Module at Mantecal, Apure state, Venezuela (7º35’ N and 69º10’ W), during the period 1984-1998, with the objective to evaluate the dynamic of weight changes of steers on hyperstational savannas with 5 months of water deficit and 5 months of excess of humidity. Two hundred hectares were assigned with similar proportions of upper, medium, and lower physiographic positions in the module to the following treatments: Continuous Grazing (CG), Deferred Grazing (DG) as the use of upper areas during the peak of the rainy season, the medium areas in the transition period rain-dry and dry-rain, and the lower areas during the dry period; and Deferred-Rotary Grazing (DRG) with similar grazing management than DG, but with three and six subdivisions in their medium and lower areas, respectively. The mean stocking rate was 0.50 AU/ha, constituted by herd cows and 12 steers of 220 kg of initial weight, which were changed annually and weighted every 45 days. Data were grouped in 1984-1989; 1990-1995, and 1997-1998 periods, considering the month of weight and analyzed as a completely random design. During the evaluated periods, there was not a significantly difference among treatments in the final animal weights. The mean weight was 85 kg/anim. and 48 kg/ha/year for first period. In the second period, it was 80.3; 76.8, and 88.7 kg/anim. and 37.7, 35.3 and 42.6 kg/ha/year in CG, DG, and DRG, respectively. During 1997 to1998 the productions were 121.1, 94.0, and 109.8 kg/anim. and 46; 36, and 42 kg/ha/year, in above order of treatments. At all times, the animals under CG lost weight for longest periods and significantly (P<0.50) than in DG, during dry season. Similarity between DG and DRG, when the later had a tendency to maintain the weight, resulting in greater efficiency in the dry period.
Recent research has demonstrated that ovine alternated grazing herbaceous cover under the fruit-bearing trees with the consumption of fruit of orange that fall to the ground, which did not seem to influence the preference of the ovine browsing citrus branches. Nevertheless, these animals did not find this fruit on the ground in other periods of the year which could increase the ovine browsing activities. In this trial we evaluated the influence of consumption of citrus by-product during grazing in the behavior of ovine integrated to citrus plantation. We used 24 Pelibuey lambs not adapte to browse citrus branch. These animals were distributed on a randomized design with two treatments with 12 replicates in each one. We recorded animal weight and behavior of browsing and grazing. The main results indicated that the consumption ad libitum of citrus by-product by lamb tended to increase the preference by browsing citrus branch. Also, the ingestion of citrus by-product did not influence the changes on weight registered in both group of lambs.
The hematological parameters, hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hb), blood cell count (RBCC), white blood cell count (WBCC), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were established for the marine fish Chaetodipterus faber. The microhematocrit, cyanomethahaemoclobin, and Neubauer coulter methods were used. The hematological range for were: Hct: 15-31%, Hb: 5.26-9.27 g/100 dl, RBCC: 1.7-2.4 x 106/mm3, WBCC: 2.03-4.7 x 104/mm3, MCV: 88.23-126.09 fl, MCH: 30.44-41.63 pg y MCHC: 26.67-39.95%. These data are considered as normal ranges in this species in healthy farmed fishes in Venezuela. The value for each hematological parameter showed significantly sex differences with higher values in males. Variation of the hematological parameters to environment changes or physiological status of fishes is discussed.
Early age thermal conditioning (TC) by exposing chicks to 40 ± 1°C for 24 hours with 5 days of age arise as an alternative to improve resistance of broilers chickens to heat stress and reduces mortality (M) during the finishing period. However, TC efficacy could be affected by several factors such as feed consumption. A design with a 2x2 factorial arrangement (2 feeding status: ad libitum (AL) and feed restriction (R) for 23 h during the TC and two environmental conditions: chicks exposed to TC and not exposed (N) was used. A total of 288 male day-old broiler chicks (Cobb) were housed in a semi controlled tropical environment chamber (SCE). Heat stress was applied at 42 days of age by increasing ambient temperature (TA) to 40°C for 8 hours in SCE. Body temperature (Tb) and body weight (BW) were recorded individually at 4, 5, 7 d of age and weekly from 14 to 42 d of age, as well as feed intake (FI). Mortality was recorded daily. The results showed that before TC, there were not differences of Tb among treatments. After TC (7 d of age), mean Tb of the TC chickens was significantly (P<0,0001) lower than those no exposed (N) (40.87°C vs. 41,15ºC). A significant effect of feeding status was evident on Tb. Average Tb of fed ad libitum chicks was 40.94°C when compared to R chicks (41.08°C). Although interactions between the feeding status and TC were not significant, Tb variations associated with TC were greater when chicks were fed compared to their counterparts whose food was withdrawn. Feed restriction reduced body weight gain in chicks exposed to TC (-10.56 g) and not exposed (-9.69 g). After TC (6-7 d) compensatory weight gain was appreciated. From 7-42 days, there were not significant differences among treatments for Tb, mortality (<1%), neither productive parameters. After heat stress at 42 days of age, Tb was lower in acclimatized chickens (42.48°C) compared to N chicks (43.07°C). Early age thermal conditioning to 40°C for 24 h at 5 days of age reduced the body temperature. Feeding restriction did not have effect in reinforcing the changes of Tb induced by TC.
An arrangement in sequences of Latin squares was demonstrated to be statistically efficient to detect the presence of residual effects in the experimentation with milk cows. With this purpose, the milk production of five cows was simulated in the application of three treatments during three periods of 15 days each. A program was generated to estimate the residual effects, and other three to be executed by the Proc GLM of SAS: one for a complete model where all the present sources of variation were included, other to detect at least a period with residual effect, and finally a model similar to a classic Latin Square without taking into account the residual effects. The sequence of Latin squares allowed to detect the residual effects of treatments and the calculation of the least squares means corrected by this effect.
