Dyslipidemias are an essential cardiovascular risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis, taking a high incidence at the moment and it is one of the main centers of action in clinical metabolic control of the susceptible subjects, including apparently healthy individuals. It was raised, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of dyslipidemias in a group of apparently healthy individuals in order to provide data for the promotion of early diagnosis and timely treatment of risk factors for CVD. We evaluated 100 patients with ages between 18 and 50 years old, whom they found triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-c) and atherogenic index of Castelli I and II. The dyslipidemia more common in the studied group was hypercholesterolemia (43%), followed by hypertriglyceridemia (32%), and decreased levels of HDL-c (31%). It was observed a low frequency in the increase in the atherogenic index and mixed dyslipidemia (18%). In conclusion, the reported percentage of dyslipidemia suggests to strengthen the design and implementation of preventive programmes to reduce the incidence of not only these biochemical alterations but also the rest of modifiable risk factors leading to cardiovascular disease. Depression in pregnant women in the second trimester of gestation and its impact on blood pressure http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1316-71382013000100004&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt La enfermedad hipertensiva durante el embarazo es una patología compleja multifactorial que conlleva a elevada morbimortalidad materno fetal.
Hypertensive pregnancy disease is a complex multifactorial pathology which leads to elevated fetal and maternal morbidity. The objective was to determine the variation in values of blood pressure with the states of humor through the Center Epidemiology Scale Depression (CES-D) test and its association with socio-economic and demographic variables. Prior informed consent, a transversal and descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 168 pregnant women during the second trimester of pregnancy. 50% of pregnant in layer IV of Graffar Méndez-Castellano (Graffar M-C) presented depressing state. The incidence of depression was 40.9% in pregnant with male fetuses and in female fetuses was 25%. The values of systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were higher in pregnant women with age ≥ 35 years. The DBP was significantly higher in pregnant women without partners, there was no significance to the SBP. The DBP was higher in the stratum IV Graffar M-C and the SBP in the stratum II. Pregnant with female fetuses had SP significantly larger than the male fetuses. There was a negative and significant low correlation between the values of SBP and SBP with the score of the CES-D test. The set of variables to consider in relation to disorders hypertensive during pregnancy would be the maternal age, marital status, the Graffar M-C stratum and fetal sex. Insulin resistence, obesity and metabolic síndrome.
Obesity is a chronic disease, a public health problem, with high morbidity associated to the insulin resistance (IR). Metabolic syndrome (MS), predicts cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, being obesity and IR the main risk factors. HOMA, is a simple validated marker for IR, non invasive and inexpensive. The objective was to estimate IR and its relation with the nutritional status of canarian-venezuelan adults with and without MS. The sample was comprised of 67 adults (20-84 years old), born in canaries islands and their children older than 19 years of age living in Venezuela, 23 with MS and 44 controls. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, fasting glucose, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin were performed in each individual. Subjects with obesity showed significantly higher values of HOMA (3,63 ± 1,27 vs 2,33 ± 0,52, p<0,001) as well as abdominal circumference, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, glucose, insulin and triglycerides/HDLcholesterol, when compared to the eutrophic subjects,. The Chi² test showed a highly significant association (p<0,001) between HOMA and MS. MS subjects had 4.7 times more risk for IR, being this finding statistically significant. To establish the correlation between variables was performed Pearson analysis demonstrating a significant correlation between HOMA and body mass index (BMI), abdominal circumference, triglycerides and triglycerides/ HDL-cholesterol. Obesity showed a high association with insulinresistance. Concluding that obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and high index triglycerides/HDL-cholesterol are high parameters for RI.
In the present study the hygienic-sanitary quality of raw and pasteurized milk from various areas of the State of Carabobo, Venezuela, was assessed. Following the methodology described by the APHA and COVENIN, 100 pasteurized milk samples and 40 raw milk samples were analyzed. Counts of aerobic mesophilic bacteria, total coliforms, thermotolerant (faecal) coliforms, molds and yeasts were determined for pasteurized milk; for raw milk, only counts of mesophilic aerobic bacteria and methylene blue reduction test (MBRT) were carried out. The presence of Salmonella spp. was also investigated. Test results of pasteurized milk indicated that 92% of samples met the limits set for mesophilic aerobic bacteria established by COVENIN; however, 45% of samples were above the limit allowed in the Standard for total coliforms, and 72% of them exceeded the limit of acceptance in terms of thermotolerant coliforms; Salmonella spp. was not observed. With regard to raw milk, 72.5% of the samples had aerobic mesophilic bacteria counts above the limits, contrary to the MBRT results, which claimed that only 30% of samples did not comply with the norm. These findings strongly suggest the need for the country’s health authorities to implement more stringent sanitary control measures on milk from dairy farms and on the regional dairy industry, since the high microbiota found in raw milk and high counts of total coliforms and thermotolerant in pasteurized milk, in addition to diminishing the milk lifetime, could represent a potential risk to the consumer’s health.
The purpose of this focused ethnography was to explore the beliefs and values of diabetic women with the purpose of unveiling the meanings on breastfeeding practice and to build a theoretical model of breastfeeding care based on these findings, following Madeleine Leninger’s Sunrise Model. Spradley’s ethnographic analysis was used for data processing. For data collection, in-depth interviews were carried out using Leninger’s observation-participation and reflection method. The sample 12 diabetic women attended at the Diabetes and Pregnancy Unit of “Dr. Enrique Tejera” Hospital City, from three municipalities of Carabobo State, Venezuela. Six domains were identified: 1) motherly satisfaction as a value is the way to strengthen breastfeeding; 2) inaccurate beliefs on diabetes is the cause for avoiding breastfeeding; 3) bottle-feeding is a way of keeping the baby from starving; 4) the family’s positive perception is a condition for the practice of successful breastfeeding; 5) indiscriminate promotion of mother’s milk substitutes is one of the causes for early abandonment of breastfeeding; 6) poor information and constraints on breastfeeding discourage the will to breastfeed. It was concluded that constructing a theoretical model of care contributes to bring into the caring field some tools that allow nursing practitioners to use health care practices culturally congruent with diabetic women’s beliefs and Comparison between permutation and asintotics tests applied to unordered rxc dimension contingency tables used in biomedical surveys http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1316-71382013000100008&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Se realizó un estudio comparativo entre pruebas de permutación y asintóticas, aplicadas a tablas de contingencia de dimensión R×C no ordenadas, utilizando como medida de comparación la diferencia entre el p-valor exacto y asintótico.
A comparative study between permutation and asymptotic tests applied to unordered R×C dimension contingency tables was carried out, using the difference between the exact p-value and the asymptotic one as comparison measurement. Five (05) biomedical research-paper results based on unordered contingency tables were examined from international scientific literature, analyzing how different or equivalent they appear using Pearson, Likelihood ratio and Freeman-Halton independency tests. Results revealed that both methodologies, exact and asymptotic, behave depending on sample size, dimensions, balance and dispersion of the contingency table, as well as on the test applied. The exact and asymptotic p-values showed striking differences for small sample sizes mainly in unbalanced and sparse contingency tables, but they converged as the sample size and table dimensions increased.
