A study of the mortality and relative yield for recruit of Plagioscion squamosissimus was carried out in the region of the middle Orinoco river in Venezuela, between January of 2000 and December of 2002; using the longitude of fish captured in the main channel of the river and in one of its flood lagoons. The rate of total mortality was determined by a curve of capture, while the relative yield for recruit was estimated by the model of Beverton and Holt (1966). The rate of total mortality was of 0.710 year^-1, with a natural mortality of 0.480 year^-1 and mortality for fishing of 0.230 year^-1. The rate of exploitation of the species at the moment was 0.324, while the estimated to reach the maximum yield for recruit was 0.880. The results of the yield for recruit indicated that the species show a moderate exploitation.
