This descriptive study was carried out using questionnaires to analyze the attitudes toward mathematics by engineering students at autonomous Venezuelan univer - sities. The population under study consisted of students studying in engineering faculties in the first Semester of 2004, giving a total of 5,931 students. To select the sample, a stratified sampling by conglomerates was applied accepting a level of reliability of 95%. The sample was thus reduced to 613 participants whose ages ranged between 15 and 30. The results obtained through factorial analysis of the main components of an exploratory nature with Varimax rotation pointed to a coherent and parsimonious structure made of three components: likes, difficulty and utility.
