Theoretical essay on the concept of territory presenting a debate on territory types and territorial disputes. Besides the classical meaning of territory, it seeks to analyze the concept of space in terms of governance and proposes a typology of territories based on bibliographical references and field research conducted in different countries. The aim is to broaden the discussion on the concept of territory and to advocate the idea that the term´s meaning and definition is a power relationship that should be debated constantly. With the emergence of the territory, now this power is used by institutions and scholars in research projects and rural territorial development involving millions of people in their habitat.
