ROQUEZ RAMOS, Asyuri del Valle  y  PAREDES DUGARTE, Solange Ysbeth. Evaluation of a coating made from industrial paint base and extract of Aloe saponaria exposed to marine atmosphere. Saber [online]. 2014, vol.26, n.3, pp.289-296. ISSN 1315-0162.

A base of industrial paint mixed with extract of plants of the genus Aloe was evaluated as a possible corrosion inhibiting coating. A phosphate buffered saline solution (BFS) was used to prepare the aqueous extract of Aloe saponaria and mixtures were prepared based industrial paint and the aqueous extract at different ratios (80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50). Plates of AA3003 aluminum alloy were coated and exposed to the marine atmosphere using the Sucre Atmospheric Corrosion Station I, located in the zone of Turpialito in the south of Gulf of Cariaco, Sucre State. To characterize the industrial paint base, extract and mixtures (base:extract), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used, while the evaluation of the coatings was carried out once a month by visual inspection, photographic record and optical microscopy. The results of FT-IR identified functional groups of esters and hydrocarbons in all mixtures (base:extract), which are also present both in painting and in extract. Coatings formulated with the base paint and Aloe saponaria extract exhibited better performance against the marine atmosphere compared to coating with paint alone, the latter having blistering degradation. This behavior suggests that the aqueous extract may be acting as a stabilizer in coatings (base paint:extract) against aggressive media and showed no blistering and maintained their consistency during the duration of the experiment..
