The interest of scientists for ionic liquids has been growing up in recent years, which has been demonstrated by the large number of publications and patents on ionic liquids. Due to the advantages presented by them as an alternative to molecular solvents in the separation of ethanol-water mixtures, in this paper we present the main characteristics, properties and applications of these compounds. Furthermore, the results of the separation of the ethanol-water mixtures, with various ionic liquids used are displayed. Finally, the main advantages of ionic liquids compared to conventional solvents in the separation of the ethanol-water mixture are highlighted.
