Abstract

CARDOZO DE PARDI, Elba Inés. Mecanismos de  Defensa del   Hospedero  en  Estomatitis  Sub-Protesica Inducida  por  Candida. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2002, vol.40, n.3, pp.297-300. ISSN 0001-6365.

Denture Stomatitis (D.S.) is a disease that is usually found on palatal mucosa beneath the fitting surface of upper dentures of denture wearers. This pathology is more frequent in women than in men and is more frequent in subjects with ages between 25-90 years old. Several studies have reported that Candida species and other microorganisms are etiological agents of D.S, while other factors like trauma, certain systemic diseases and deficiencies of the immune system may be involved. Host reaction against the presence of D.S. induced by Candida is important to consider. Wherefore, in this article we describe the most important host defense mechanisms originated in D.S. induced by Candida. In this way, we make reference about two defense lines. The first one includes physical factors, salival components and interference of oral microorganisms. The second one includes cellular and humoral immune mechanisms in host tissues.

Keywords : Denture Stomatitis; host defenses; Candida; mechanisms.
