MILLAN ISEA, Ronald E; FERRER, Maria A  and  PEREZ, Ligia. Human papilloma virus lesión on the lip of a child. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2007, vol.45, n.3, pp.450-454. ISSN 0001-6365.

ABSTRACT Human papilloma virus is a DNA virus that produces stratified squamous cell epithelium proliferation in skin and mucosas. There are more than 80 subtypes of this virus. They can be identified for the microscopic alterations at the epithelial cells detected by the light microscopy and more accurate through specialized procedures as inmunohistochemistry, in situ hibridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), where its DNA can be specifically identified. The transmission of the virus is mainly through sexual relations, from a contaminated mother to the fetus and for direct contact con active lesions. The incubation period is from 3 to 12 weeks. The infection period starts when the virus is joined to the cell membrane, it penetrates into the cytoplasm where is going to be replicated. The oral squamous papilloma is diagnosed mainly in patients between 30 and 50 years old, without sex predilection. It can affect different oral mucosa surfaces; however the most affected sites are tongue and soft palate. It is a painless lesion with numerous digitiform projections on its surface, similar to a cauliflower. It can be normal mucosa colour, red or white, depending on the keratinisation. Usually it is an isolated lesion and grows fast. Microscopically exhibits basal cell hyperplasia with mitotic activity. The treatment is the excision including its base, the recurrence is very low. The purpose of this presentation is to show the importance of the diagnosis and treatment with a transdisciplinary management of this pathology based on a actual bibliographic research
