X ray difraction shows presence of iron and aluminium oxides which participate in the exchange reactions. The protonation reaction generates 28.35 cmol (+) kg-1 of positive charges and the deprotonation reaction produces 35.35 cmol (-) kg-1 of negative charges. The analysis made upon the original materials shows cationic exchange capacities &#8220;CEC&#8221; ranging between 5 - 19 cmol (+) kg-1. Portion of the of the CEC used in the retention of calcium from water ranges 2 - 7% because of the bases saturation, so the amounts of calcium retained are associated with the empty CEC. The exchanging performance is improved by dislodging calcium from the exchanging sites with NaCl 0.05 N solution before reuses, obtaining up to 36% from the original CEC used. Results show that these materials could be used in water softening.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[En el presente trabajo se estudió la capacidad de retención de iones calcio por diversos materiales litológicos, provenientes de suelos del estado Mérida, Venezuela con contenidos de óxidos de hierro y aluminio, después de un tratamiento térmico progresivo desde 20ºC hasta 800ºC, durante 3 h. Los difractogramas de rayos X confirman la presencia de óxidos de hierro y aluminio, los cuales participan en las reacciones de intercambio. Por medio de la reacción de protonación se generaron 28,35 cmol (+) kg-1 de cargas positivas, mientras que por medio de la reacción de deprotonación se generaron 35,35 cmol (-) kg-1 de cargas negativas. Los valores de capacidad de intercambio catiónico, CIC, de los materiales originales son relativamente bajos (5 - 19 cmol (+) kg-1) y los porcentajes de la CIC utilizados en la adsorción de iones calcio del agua están entre el 2 y 7% debido a la saturación con las bases intercambiables por lo que las cantidades de calcio retenidas se deben a la CIC desocupada. Después de practicar un desalojo de la CIC por medio de una solución de NaCl 0,05 N el porcentaje utilizado se incrementa hasta 36%. Los resultados muestran que estos materiales pueden aplicarse al ablandamiento de aguas.]]></p></abstract>

[1, 2]. Estos grupos ox&#237;dicos  pueden disociarse o ser protonados, dependiendo del pH del medio, modificando  las cargas superficiales de las part&#237;culas</FONT><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2">, pudiendo generar tanto intercambio  cati&#243;nico como ani&#243;nico como resultado de reacciones con los protones o  iones hidroxilo del </FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> medio</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2">. En el caso de los &#243;xidos de hierro de tama&#241;o  coloidal se tiene: [3, 4]&nbsp;</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> </FONT> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n1/art07ecu1.gif" width="413" height="84"></P>     
<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Por este motivo, a este tipo de cargas se les denomina cargas variables,  a diferencia de las cargas ocasionadas por los defectos estructurales de  las arcillas, las cuales son permanentes.&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En el estado M&#233;rida, Venezuela, existen algunos suelos, particularmente  en la zona semi&#225;rida de Lagunillas, con contenidos importantes de &#243;xidos  de hierro y aluminio</FONT><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2">, que presentan fuertes limitaciones para el uso agr&#237;cola  ya que estos &#243;xidos deshidratados por el sol se endurecen irreversiblemente,  formando corazas ferruginosas. Sin embargo, los materiales provenientes  de estos suelos son ut</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">ilizados por &nbsp;artesanos para la alfarer&#237;a y sus productos  tienen gran demanda por la poblaci&#243;n tur&#237;stica que visita la regi&#243;n en  temporadas vacacionales. El objetivo del presente trabajo es investigar  la aplicaci&#243;n de estos materiales a la preparaci&#243;n de lechos adsorbentes  y su capacidad para la retenci&#243;n de iones presentes en el agua como calcio  y magnesio y su utilizaci&#243;n como intercambiador cati&#243;nico en el ablandamiento  de aguas y otras aplicaciones [5, 6].&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Parte experimental&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Los materiales se tomaron de minas ubicadas en el sector de Los Gu&#225;imaros  (2 tipos: G1 y G2) y &nbsp;en San Juan de Lagunillas (3 tipos: L1, L2 y L3).  La preparaci&#243;n del lecho intercambiador se efectu&#243; manualmente a trav&#233;s  de las siguientes etapas: trituraci&#243;n del material con martillo de goma,  tamizado a 0,8 mm, mezclado con agua destilada hasta obtener un lodo consistente.  Con la ayuda de una inyectadora de 60 mL se preparan unos &#147;filamentos&#148;  de aproximadamente 3&nbsp;mm de di&#225;metro los cuales se dividen en trozos de unos  5 mm de longitud y se dejan secar al aire por 24 h y a la estufa a 150&#176;C  por otras 24 h. Finalmente es calcinado en una mufla a unos 700&#176;C por 2&#189;  h. Esto garantiza que la fracci&#243;n org&#225;nica sea quemada por completo, de  manera que s&#243;lo la fracci&#243;n ox&#237;dica participa en las reacciones de intercambio  i&#243;nico. Por otro lado, el lecho calcinado no se dispersa</FONT><FONT COLOR="#ff0000" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"> </FONT> <FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> en el agua.&nbsp; </FONT></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Determinaci&#243;n de la porosidad&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Se determina el volumen de agua absorbida por una muestra de lecho pesando  la muestra seca y saturada con agua. Cuando la muestra est&#225; saturada, el  espacio de los poros es llenado con el agua salvo una peque&#241;a parte que  corresponde al aire que queda atrapado. De esta manera, el volumen de agua  en el lecho saturado constituye una buena aproximaci&#243;n del volumen de los  poros y se puede usar para aproximar la porosidad, la cual se calcula seg&#250;n:  % porosidad= (V</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2">H<SUB>2</SUB>O absorbida / V</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>Muestra</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">) x 100, donde el volumen de la  muestra se determina por medio del desplazamiento de agua en un cilindro  graduado de 50 mL. [8].&nbsp; </FONT> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Experimento de columna&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Las columnas, constan de un tubo de vidrio cil&#237;ndrico de 3 cm de di&#225;metro  interno y 70&nbsp;cm de longitud, con una llave de paso en la parte inferior  para el control del flujo de agua [9, 10]<I>.</I> El relleno de la columna se  efectu&#243; introduciendo un tap&#243;n de gasa en la parte inferior de la columna  como medio filtrante, seguido de una capa de arena de 2&nbsp;cm (0,5 &#150; 1mm </FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"> <FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"><i>&#1060;</i> </FONT> <FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>part&#237;cula</SUB></FONT></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">). Seguidamente un relleno con el lecho intercambiador y finalmente  una capa de arena de 2 cm, la cual funciona como repartidor del flujo de  agua a fin de que esta descienda de manera uniforme por la columna. &nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Para la activaci&#243;n de las cargas positivas y negativas en el material,  se hacen pasar soluciones de HCl 0,080 N y NaOH 0,089 M a trav&#233;s de la  columna de adsorbente y se analiza la concentraci&#243;n de H</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"><SUP>+</SUP> u OH</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>-</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">, seg&#250;n  el caso, a la salida de la columna cada 50 ml, por titulaci&#243;n &#225;cido base.  Cuando la concentraci&#243;n de salida llega a ser igual a la concentraci&#243;n  de entrada, se consideran activadas la mayor&#237;a de las cargas (+) o (-).  &nbsp;Esto permite conocer el n&#250;mero de milimoles &nbsp;de H</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>+</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> u OH</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>-</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> &nbsp;retenidos en  la columna y por ende la capacidad de intercambio generada, la cual es  expresada encmol (+) o (-) por kg de lecho.&nbsp;</FONT></FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Para la aplicaci&#243;n como ablandador de aguas, se analiza la cantidad de  Ca</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"><SUP>+2</SUP> + Mg</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>+2</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> a la salida de la columna cada 50 mL, desechando el primer  volumen hasta que su concentraci&#243;n retome el valor de la muestra de entrada.  En ese momento, el volumen total de agua pasado por la columna representa  el volumen de saturaci&#243;n de la misma. <body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Esta baja resistencia t&#233;rmica podr&#237;a producir cambios en la capacidad de  intercambio del material e igualmente puede traer p&#233;rdida de propiedades  mec&#225;nicas del material, lo que es importante en la fabricaci&#243;n del lecho  intercambiador e igualmente para el caso de la alfarer&#237;a.&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En el caso del material de Los Gu&#225;imaros (<a href="#fig1">Figura 1b</a>), se observa que este  material presenta una mejor resistencia t&#233;rmica, ya que hay m&#225;s similitud  entre los difractogramas respectivos. &nbsp;a&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En las <a href="#fig2">Figuras 2</a> y <a href="#fig3">3</a> se muestran las adsorciones de los iones OH</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"><SUP>-</SUP> y H</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>+</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">  &nbsp;al percolar soluciones de NaOH y HCl respectivamente para el caso del  lecho fabricado con el material de Lagunillas, L3. La reacci&#243;n de deprotonaci&#243;n  produjo 35,35cmol (-) kg</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>-1</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> de cargas negativas, que ser&#225;n responsables  del intercambio cati&#243;nico, mientras que la reacci&#243;n de protonaci&#243;n produjo  28,35cmol (+) kg</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>-1</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> de cargas positivas, que ser&#225;n responsables de el intercambio  ani&#243;nico.</FONT></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig2"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n1/art07fig2.gif" width="412" height="316"></a></P>

<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En la <a href="#fig4">Figura 4</a> se muestra la variaci&#243;n de la cantidad de calcio en funci&#243;n  del volumen percolado por la columna. Debido a que el magnesio representa  menos del 5% de la dureza total del agua utilizada, se puede decir que  las reacciones de intercambio cati&#243;nico est&#225;n gobernadas b&#225;sicamente por  el calcio. A medida que el agua percola por la columna entra en contacto  con el lecho y la reacci&#243;n de intercambio tiene lugar. Si la columna es  lo suficientemente larga y el flujo es lo suficientemente lento, entonces  la reacci&#243;n de intercambio tendr&#225; oportunidad de realizarse completamente  antes de que el agua emerja de la columna.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig4"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n1/art07fig4.gif" width="495" height="392"></a></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     
<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La Figura muestra que hay una reacci&#243;n de adsorci&#243;n inmediata, salvo en  el caso del material notado con L2, reteniendo casi el 80% del calcio en  los primeros 50 mL recolectados, estableci&#233;ndose los equilibrios de intercambio,  luego de los cuales comienza un proceso de saturaci&#243;n de los sitios disponibles  para el intercambio cati&#243;nico. La saturaci&#243;n completa de los lechos se  alcanza a diferentes vol&#250;menes de agua percolados por las columnas. Sin embargo, este  porcentaje se incrementa significativamente despu&#233;s de practicar un desalojo  de la CIC por medio del percolado de una soluci&#243;n de NaCl 0,05 N a trav&#233;s  del lecho intercambiador, (lechos L3* y G1*). &nbsp;tal como lo muestran las  <a href="#fig5">Figuras 5</a>, <a href="#fig6">6</a> y <a href="#fig7">7</a> lo que igualmente demuestra que la reacci&#243;n de intercambio  se da b&#225;sicamente con el i&#243;n calcio.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig5"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n1/art07fig5.gif" width="503" height="391"></a></P>

<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Conclusiones&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Las CIC de los materiales litol&#243;gicos originales, son peque&#241;as, por lo  que las arcillas presentes pueden contener &#243;xidos de hierro y aluminio,  cuya CIC est&#225; parcialmente ocupada por calcio del suelo. El estudio de  difracci&#243;n de rayos X realizado sobre los materiales estudiados muestra  al cuarzo como componente mayoritario y confirma la presencia de &#243;xidos  de hierro y aluminio, los cuales generan reacciones de intercambio ani&#243;nico  o cati&#243;nico seg&#250;n reaccionen con un medio &#225;cido o alcalino respectivamente.  Igualmente se evidencia una mayor resistencia al tratamiento t&#233;rmico por  parte del material de los Gu&#225;imaros, lo que le confiere mejores propiedades  mec&#225;nicas al lecho intercambiador fabricado con el mismo.</FONT><FONT COLOR="#ff0000" FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2"> </FONT> <FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> &nbsp;La capacidad que tienen estos materiales para retener el calcio de las  aguas, depende de la saturaci&#243;n de la CIC con el calcio del suelo, por  lo que la cantidad de calcio del agua retenida est&#225; asociada a la parte  de la CIC desocupada. Sin embargo, la eficiencia de la reacci&#243;n de intercambio  se incrementa por un factor de 4 aproximadamente, aplicando un procedimiento  sencillo de activaci&#243;n del lecho con NaCl para desplazar el calcio que  satura la CIC del material original.&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Los lechos intercambiadores de calcio as&#237; preparados con estos suelos podr&#237;an  ser adecuados para la construcci&#243;n de lechos intercambiadores de cationes  y aplicarlos al tratamiento de aguas duras, abaratando el costo del proceso  debido a su disponibilidad inmediata y f&#225;cil preparaci&#243;n.&nbsp; </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Igualmente, podr&#237;an ser utilizados en otras aplicaciones, por ejemplo como  adsorbentes de contaminantes en aguas servidas &nbsp;o como enmiendas para el  mejoramiento de los suelos con fines agr&#237;colas.&nbsp; </FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Agradecimientos&nbsp;</B> </FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Al Polit&#233;cnico &#147;Santiago Mari&#241;o&#148; Ext.
