The system was integrated by two combined bioreactors, the first was used for nitrification (SBBR) and the second for denitrification (SBR). The typical sequence of operation used for both bioreactors was as follows: 15 min for filling up; 270 min for reaction; 45 min for sedimentation; 15 min for discharge, and additionally an aeration-stirring phase of 15 min was included in the second reactor (SBR) before sedimentation. The synthetic wastewater was distributed between both reactors, a fraction (&#945; = 0,5) was supplied to the SBR to generated enough carbon for the denitrification reaction and the other fraction (1-&#945;) was supplied to the SBBR for the nitrification reaction. The system was operated for 4 cycles/day. The nitrification reached 91% in the SBBR with a surface reaction rate of 12 mg NO3-N/m².h. The denitrification in the SBR reached 99% with a specific rate of 2.0 mg NO3-N/Kg MLSS.h. The NO3-N and total nitrogen (Nt) concentrations in the effluent were 0.06 and 21.6 mg/L, respectively. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Se evaluó un sistema biológico, a escala de laboratorio, operado por ciclos e intermitente para remover nitrógeno de agua residual sintética, constituido por dos biorreactores acoplados, el primero de crecimiento microbiano adherido: Reactor por Carga Secuencial de Biopelícula (RCSB) para nitrificar y el segundo de crecimiento suspendido: Reactor por Carga Secuencial (RCS) para desnitrificar. La secuencia de operación para ambos subsistemas (RCSB y RCS) quedó así: llenado, 15 min; reacción, 4 h y 30 min; sedimentación, 45 min; descarga, 15 min; adicionalmente se incluyó una fase de “pulido” (aireación/agitación) de 15 minutos en el RCS antes de la sedimentación. El agua residual se distribuyó entre ambos biorreactores, tal que, una fracción (&#945;= 0,5) se envió al RCS para garantizar carbono durante la desnitrificación y el resto (1-&#945;) al RCSB para nitrificar. El sistema operó 4 ciclos/día. La nitrificación alcanzó 91% en el RCSB y la tasa superficial de formación de nitrato 11,6 mg NO3-N/m².h; la desnitrificación en el RCS alcanzó 99% y la tasa específica de desnitrificación 1,99 mg NO3-N/kgSSLM.h. Se obtuvieron concentraciones de NO3-N y Nitrógeno total (Nt) en el efluente del sistema de 0,06 mg/L y 21,6 mg/L, respectivamente. <body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Palabras clave:&nbsp;</B>Remoci&#243;n biol&#243;gica de nitr&#243;geno, nitrificaci&#243;n-desnitrificaci&#243;n, biorreactores  acoplados, reactor por carga secuencial.</FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Recibido el 10 de Diciembre de 2008</FONT></P>    <P ALIGN="justify"> <FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En forma revisada el 13 de Julio de 2009</FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Introducci&#243;n</B></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Las aguas residuales dom&#233;sticas producidas en Venezuela tienen caracter&#237;sticas  propias, entre otras, su concentraci&#243;n que permite calificarlas como d&#233;biles  (concentraci&#243;n diluida) y su composici&#243;n que no sigue el patr&#243;n t&#237;pico  de otras regiones, los cuales generalmente dan la pauta a los ingenieros  ambientales del pa&#237;s, con respecto a par&#225;metros de dise&#241;o y operaci&#243;n,  a falta de valores propios. Por ello la experimentaci&#243;n con l&#237;quidos representativos  de la realidad del pa&#237;s permite llenar tales vac&#237;os.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Por otra parte, la remoci&#243;n de nitr&#243;geno de efluentes de biotratamientos  es cada vez m&#225;s obligante, por los problemas de eutrofizaci&#243;n asociados  a la presencia de formas oxidadas de nitr&#243;geno en tales efluentes, especialmente  si su destino final son cuerpos de agua l&#233;nticos, y por el aprovechamiento  y reuso de aguas residuales. El nitr&#243;geno org&#225;nico es transformado en amonio  por acci&#243;n bacteriana; posteriormente con la intervenci&#243;n de bacterias  espec&#237;ficas (<I>Nitrobacter y Nitrosomomas)</I> sucesivamente pasan a nitritos  y a nitratos [1, 2].</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La desnitrificaci&#243;n biol&#243;gica es ampliamente aceptada por la comunidad  cient&#237;fica al ser aplicable a un amplio espectro de condiciones y a costos  generalmente inferiores a los de procesos f&#237;sicos y qu&#237;micos, al reducir  necesidad de ox&#237;geno y por ende de energ&#237;a [3-5]. En el proceso de biodesnitrificaci&#243;n,  los nitratos son reducidos a formas de nitr&#243;geno gaseoso (&#243;xidos de nitr&#243;geno  y nitr&#243;geno elemental) por bacterias facultativas (<I>Pseudomonas, Achrobacter,  Bacillus, Micrococus</I>, entre otras), las cuales ejecutan un mecanismo respiratorio  en donde reemplazan el ox&#237;geno libre por el nitrato como aceptor de electrones  [2]. As&#237; las bacterias no requieren condiciones anaer&#243;bicas estrictas sino  una condici&#243;n ambiental intermedia que acepta bajas tensiones de ox&#237;geno  o ausencia del mismo [1]. La trayectoria metab&#243;lica seguida por estas bacterias  es una variante de la respiraci&#243;n aer&#243;bica y es conocida como respiraci&#243;n  an&#243;xica.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La biodesnitrificaci&#243;n puede llevarse a cabo en diferentes tipos y combinaciones  de reactores: de lecho m&#243;vil con crecimiento suspendido (tanques de mezcla  completa, flujo pist&#243;n e h&#237;bridos), o en lechos fijos y m&#243;viles de crecimiento  adherido (lechos biopercoladores, torres de relleno, biodiscos, entre otros);  en r&#233;gimen de flujo continuo o por carga. El escoger la configuraci&#243;n apropiada  requiere de consideraciones de factibilidad econ&#243;mica, problemas operacionales,  grado de tratamiento requerido y flexibilidad de adaptaci&#243;n a condiciones  cambiantes de operaci&#243;n [2, 5].</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En este sentido se han realizado varias investigaciones sobre los factores  y aspectos que afectan el proceso de biodesnitrificaci&#243;n, tales como: temperatura,  pH, acidez, alcalinidad, ox&#237;geno disuelto; tiempo de aireaci&#243;n; relaci&#243;n  carbono/nitr&#243;geno; carga org&#225;nica choque; relaci&#243;n NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>&#150;</SUP>/NO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>2</SUB><SUP>&#150;</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">; desnitrificaci&#243;n  endog&#233;nica; sedimentabilidad de los lodos biol&#243;gicos y su relaci&#243;n con  la tasa de respiraci&#243;n, al igual que sobre tipos de reactores usados para  efectuar la desnitrificaci&#243;n como son: reactores de lecho adherido con  flujo ascendente y descendente, y de lecho suspendido como mezcla completa,  flujo pist&#243;n e h&#237;bridos [6-10].</FONT></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Por lo anteriormente planteado, se presenta como alternativa para la remoci&#243;n  de nitr&#243;geno una configuraci&#243;n particular que incluye una torre de relleno,  es decir un reactor de biopel&#237;cula, operado con flujo descendente y bajo  la modalidad por carga secuencial para nitrificar el l&#237;quido residual,  muy ventajoso por los costos reducidos de aireaci&#243;n y cuyo efluente servir&#225;  de alimentaci&#243;n a un reactor de crecimiento suspendido operado tambi&#233;n  bajo la modalidad por carga secuencial que promover&#225; la desnitrificaci&#243;n  hasta alcanzar valores que cumplan la normativa vigente. En este sistema  se considera la ventaja de los biosistemas de lecho adherido que favorecen  a las bacterias nitrificantes, cuyas tasas de crecimiento son bajas y adicionalmente  son menos suceptibles a lavado cuando crecen en biopel&#237;culas.</FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar, a escala laboratorio, la eficiencia  de la remoci&#243;n biol&#243;gica de nitr&#243;geno de un agua residual sint&#233;tica d&#233;bil  utilizando una configuraci&#243;n particular de dos biorreactores acoplados,  operada por ciclos e intermitentemente, constituida por un reactor por  carga secuencial de biopel&#237;cula (RCSB) para nitrificar y un reactor por  carga secuencial de crecimiento suspendido (RCS) para desnitrificar.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Metodolog&#237;a</B></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El sistema usado en esta investigaci&#243;n est&#225; constituido por dos modelos  previamente dise&#241;ados, construidos y evaluados desde el punto de vista  hidr&#225;ulico por trabajos precedentes a este [6-10], los cuales fueron acoplados  para este estudio. El primer modelo es un reactor de biopel&#237;cula denominado  reactor por carga secuencial de biopel&#237;cula (RCSB) conformado por una columna  de 214 cm de altura, y 9 cm de di&#225;metro interno utilizando anillos de pl&#225;stico  tipo Raschig, de 1,27 cm &#215;1,27 cm, como material de relleno hasta una altura  de 192 cm y cuya relaci&#243;n (altura de relleno)/di&#225;metro, igual a 21, constituye  un lecho biopercolador de super alta tasa. El reactor de biopel&#237;cula favorece  el proceso biol&#243;gico de nitrificaci&#243;n llevado a cabo por bacterias aut&#243;trofas.  Este RCSB fue acoplado con un reactor de crecimiento suspendido, denominado  reactor por carga secuencial (RCS), conformado por un tanque de 10 litros  con agitador y operado durante la etapa de reacci&#243;n en condiciones an&#243;xicas,  para favorecer la desnitrificaci&#243;n. El sistema fue operado por ciclos y  en forma intermitente. Cada ciclo estuvo constituido por dos subciclos;  el primero llevado a cabo en el RCSB (nitrificaci&#243;n) y el segundo, realizado  en el RCS (desnitrificaci&#243;n). Para controlar la disminuci&#243;n de materia  carbonosa &#150;asociada a la operaci&#243;n del reactor de biopel&#237;cula&#150; y requerida  por las bacterias heterotr&#243;ficas desnitrificantes para formar su biomasa,  la alimentaci&#243;n del reactor de crecimiento suspendido fue completada con  una fracci&#243;n volum&#233;trica del agua residual sint&#233;tica a, restante de la  fracci&#243;n (1-</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Symbol">a</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">) de agua residual sint&#233;tica utilizada para el llenado del  reactor de biopel&#237;cula. Este trabajo fue realizado con una fracci&#243;n </FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Symbol"> a</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> =  0,5. La <a href="#fig1">Figura 1</a> muestra un diagrama de flujo del sistema combinado citado.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig1"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n3/art05fig1.gif" width="572" height="377"></a></P>     
<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Cada fase de operaci&#243;n de los dos subsistemas estuvo conformada por las  operaciones t&#237;picas de los reactores secuenciales: llenado, reacci&#243;n, sedimentaci&#243;n,  descarga y per&#237;odo muerto opcional. Los tiempos de operaci&#243;n utilizados  en este estudio fueron para la fase de nitrificaci&#243;n: llenado instant&#225;neo  15 min, reacci&#243;n aer&#243;bica con reciclo de s&#243;lidos 4 horas, 30 min., sedimentaci&#243;n  45 min, descarga 15 min, reposo 15 min y para la fase de desnitrificaci&#243;n:  llenado instant&#225;neo 15 min, reacci&#243;n an&#243;xica/agitaci&#243;n 4 horas y 30 min,  aireaci&#243;n/agitaci&#243;n-pulido 15 min, sedimentaci&#243;n 45 min y descarga 15 min.  Los tiempos de cada secuencia se establecieron a partir de valores &#243;ptimos  obtenidos y publicados en trabajos precedentes [6-10].</FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El sistema de alimentaci&#243;n consisti&#243; de un tanque de almacenamiento del  l&#237;quido residual sint&#233;tico crudo utilizado como alimentaci&#243;n del sistema,  el cual fue enviado a un tanque provisto con agitador y bomba que adem&#225;s  de alimentar el RCSB permiti&#243; la recirculaci&#243;n del l&#237;quido bajo tratamiento  durante la primera fase. El RCSB oper&#243; en forma intermitente. Al finalizar  este 1&#186; subciclo el efluente nitrificado fue al RCS conjuntamente con una  fracci&#243;n volum&#233;trica del agua residual sint&#233;tica como fuente de carbono  para la desnitrificaci&#243;n que se llev&#243; a cabo durante el 2&#186; subciclo, el  cual tambi&#233;n fue intermitente. El RCSB inici&#243; en forma independiente un  nuevo ciclo de nitrificaci&#243;n al terminar de alimentar con su efluente al  RCS. De la misma forma el RCS, una vez completadas sus operaciones, inici&#243;  un nuevo subciclo. El sistema oper&#243; 4 ciclos por d&#237;a, con una relaci&#243;n  C/N &#150;a la entrada del RCS&#150; aproximadamente igual a 7 expresado en mg DQO/mg  N. No fue necesaria la purga de lodos durante el per&#237;odo de experimentaci&#243;n.  La fracci&#243;n de agua residual sint&#233;tica cruda a enviada al RCS fue de 0,5.  La <a href="#fig2">Figura 2</a> ilustra la operaci&#243;n secuencial de ambos subciclos durante  24 horas.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig2"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n3/art05fig2.gif" width="525" height="475"></a></P>     
<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El agua residual utilizada en esta investigaci&#243;n se prepar&#243; diluyendo leche  en polvo (1,7 g), pectona (1,7 g), cloruro de amonio (0,4 g), almid&#243;n (1,7  g) y otros nutrientes en 19 litros de agua del chorro, representativos  de un agua residual de composici&#243;n d&#233;bil, recomendados por investigadores  precedentes [11, 12]. El agua residual sint&#233;tica present&#243; una concentraci&#243;n  promedio de 135 mg/L de Demanda Bioqu&#237;mica de Ox&#237;geno a los cinco d&#237;as  (DBO<SUB>5</SUB>), 308 mg/L de Demanda Qu&#237;mica de Ox&#237;geno (DQO), 29 mg/L de nitr&#243;geno  total Kjeldahl (NTK), 5,8 mg/L de f&#243;sforo total y 125 mg CaCO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">/L de alcalinidad.</FONT></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Los par&#225;metros fisicoqu&#237;micos se determinaron seg&#250;n los m&#233;todos y t&#233;cnicas  recomendados para an&#225;lisis y preservaci&#243;n de muestras por APHA <I>et al.</I> [13]:  pH (potenciom&#233;trico), alcalinidad (potenciom&#233;trico y titulaci&#243;n), ox&#237;geno  disuelto (electrodo de membrana), DQO (oxidaci&#243;n con dicromato a reflujo  abierto), DBO<SUB>5</SUB> (diluciones), s&#243;lidos suspendidos en el licor mezclado (SSLM)  y s&#243;lidos suspendidos totales (SST), por gravimetr&#237;a, &#237;ndice volum&#233;trico  de lodos, IVL (t&#233;cnica del cilindro); nitr&#243;geno org&#225;nico (digesti&#243;n Kjeldahl),  nitr&#243;geno amoniacal (destilaci&#243;n Kjeldahl) y nitritos (colorim&#233;trico);  con excepci&#243;n del par&#225;metro nitrato, determinado por el m&#233;todo colorim&#233;trico  recomendado por la Environmental Protection Agency, EPA [14]. El programa  de muestreo llevado a cabo para evaluar el desempe&#241;o del sistema consisti&#243;  en la captaci&#243;n de muestras a la entrada y la salida del RCSB y del RCS  y al inicio y al final de cada ciclo evaluado (totalizando 8 muestras),  respectivamente. Se realizaron 11 muestreos durante un lapso de 14 meses  de operaci&#243;n continua.</FONT></P> </MULTICOL> <MULTICOL GUTTER="39" COLS="2">     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El an&#225;lisis estad&#237;stico de los datos incluy&#243; el c&#225;lculo del valor promedio,  la desviaci&#243;n est&#225;ndar, el coeficiente de variaci&#243;n y el rango.</FONT></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Adicionalmente, para conseguir un perfil del comportamiento de los par&#225;metros  m&#225;s relevantes para este trabajo, se captaron y analizaron muestras a:  0; 0,5; 1; 2; 3; y 4,5 horas de iniciada la reacci&#243;n, tanto en el RCSB  como en el RCS. Tales estudios de perfiles permitieron calcular tasas de  reacci&#243;n actuales <I>in situ </I>y ayudan a la comprensi&#243;n de los mecanismos envueltos.  Para obtener el perfil del comportamiento de las diversas formas de nitr&#243;geno  y de la DQO durante la etapa de reacci&#243;n se realizaron barridos por triplicado,  determin&#225;ndose estos par&#225;metros a los tiempos anteriormente se&#241;alados.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Resultados y Discusi&#243;n</B></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En las <a href="#Tabla_1">Tablas 1 y 2</a> se presentan los resultados estad&#237;sticos de los par&#225;metros  utilizados en este trabajo para evaluar el RCSB y el RCS, respectivamente.  Muestran valores a la entrada y salida del reactor. Se presentan tanto los porcentajes de formaci&#243;n  de nitratos y remoci&#243;n de amonio y NTK como las tasas de formaci&#243;n de nitrato  y de remoci&#243;n de amonio en forma absoluta y por &#225;rea superficial. En primera  instancia la nitrificaci&#243;n conseguida en el RCSB alcanz&#243; 91% de formaci&#243;n  de NO<SUB>3</SUB>-N, valor bastante alto y comparable a los citados en la literatura  para reactores por carga secuencial de biopel&#237;cula. Yilmaz y Ort&#252;ck [15],  reportaron valores de nitrificaci&#243;n entre 35 y 99%, dependiendo de la carga  org&#225;nica. La tasa absoluta de formaci&#243;n alcanz&#243; el valor promedio de 3,12  mg NO3-N/L.h y la tasa superficial de formaci&#243;n result&#243; 11,6 mg NO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">-N/m</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>2</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">.h;  este &#250;ltimo valor est&#225; por encima del conseguido por Jones <I>et al.</I> [11]  quienes trabajaron con un sustrato semejante al usado en este trabajo y  consiguieron una tasa promedio superficial de formaci&#243;n de 6,6 mg N/m</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUP>2</SUP></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">.h. En cuanto a las tasas de remoci&#243;n  de amonio, el valor encontrado en este trabajo que alcanza a 2,9 mg NH<SUB>4</SUB>-N/L.h  es superior al obtenido por Ganesh <I>et al</I>. [16] quienes trabajaron con un  residual semejante al usado en este trabajo y consiguieron valores de la  tasa absoluta de remoci&#243;n de amonio de 1,3 mg/L.h. Estas comparaciones  sustentan la afirmaci&#243;n de que fue exitosa la nitrificaci&#243;n en el RCSB.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La <a href="#Tabla_4">Tabla 4</a> muestra los valores promedio de algunos par&#225;metros caracter&#237;sticos  del desempe&#241;o del RCS y del sistema RCSB-RCS. La remoci&#243;n de nitr&#243;geno,  considerando todas las formas de nitr&#243;geno (Nt), alcanz&#243; 57% en el subciclo  correspondiente al RCS, valor menor al reportado por Jones <I>et al</I>. [11].  Mientras que, en el efluente del sistema RCSB-RCS se obtuvo una concentraci&#243;n  de Nt de 21,6 mg/L, valor alto para cuerpos de agua l&#233;nticos [19]. Por  otra parte, si se hace el balance con los nitratos procedentes del RCSB  su remoci&#243;n alcanza 99%, valor que indica el excelente desempe&#241;o de este  reactor referido a la desnitrificaci&#243;n, refrendado por el valor de NO<SUB>3</SUB>-N  alcanzado de 0,06 mg/L. Adicionalmente, la tasa espec&#237;fica de desnitrificaci&#243;n  obtenida fue de 1,99 g NO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">-N/kg SSLM.h, mucho mayor a la obtenida por Silverstein  y Schroeder [17] de 0,014 g NO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">-N/kg SSLM.h y menor a la obtenida por Ganesh  <I>et al.</I> [16] de 6,24 g NO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">-N/kg SSLM.h, valor que reitera el buen comportamiento  del RCS para remover nitratos. La aparente contradicci&#243;n entre la remoci&#243;n  exitosa del nitrato y la menor del Nt puede explicarse porque &#233;ste &#250;ltimo  est&#225; influido fuertemente por la fracci&#243;n volum&#233;trica preestablecida (a)  a&#241;adida al RCS, la cual cumple satisfactoriamente el objetivo de suministrar  donantes de electrones a las bacterias desnitrificantes, pero tambi&#233;n incorpora  NTK. Los nitritos muestran, en el RCSB y en el RCS, una curva de  crecimiento y posterior disminuci&#243;n, t&#237;pica de su car&#225;cter de forma intermedia  de nitr&#243;geno. La <a href="#fig4">Figura 4</a> muestra el perfil de los nitratos en ambos reactores  y permite observar que en el RCSB aumentaron cumpli&#233;ndose la nitrificaci&#243;n  esperada y alcanzando 16 mg-N/L. En el RCS, que recibe adem&#225;s del efluente  del RCSB a una fracci&#243;n de agua residual sint&#233;tica puede observarse que  en apenas una hora ya los niveles de nitratos han descendido a 2,2 mg NO<SUB>3</SUB>-N/L,  indicador de una desnitrificaci&#243;n excelente, cuesti&#243;n que se corrobora  al t&#233;rmino de la etapa de reacci&#243;n cuando se alcanzan 0,06 mgNO</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Bookman"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" FACE="Verdana"><SUB>3</SUB></FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">-N/L.</FONT></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="center"><a name="fig3"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rtfiuz/v32n3/art05fig3.gif" width="558" height="359"></a></P>

<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La concentraci&#243;n de las distintas formas de nitr&#243;geno obtenidas en el efluente  del sistema permiten afirmar que la normativa del pa&#237;s [18] para descargas  en cualquier cuerpo de agua se cumple, tanto la relativa a nitr&#243;geno total  (40 mg-N/L), como la relativa a nitritos + nitratos (10 mg-N/L), obteni&#233;ndose  19 y 0,44 mg/L, respectivamente. No obstante, la normativa espec&#237;fica para  la cuenca del Lago de Valencia [19], t&#237;picamente un cuerpo de agua l&#233;ntico,  y referida &#250;nicamente a nitr&#243;geno total (10 mg/L) es sobrepasada. Por consiguiente,  existe un compromiso entre el valor que se ha establecido para la fracci&#243;n  volum&#233;trica </FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Symbol"> a</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> y la normativa del pa&#237;s para cuerpos l&#233;nticos. Es necesario  buscar un valor de a que sea aceptable para desnitrificar el nitrato producido  en el primer reactor al aportar el carbono necesario para el crecimiento  de las bacterias desnitrificantes y que al mismo tiempo no incorpore NTK  en cantidades tales que al terminar la reacci&#243;n el contenido de Nt sobrepase  la norma [19].</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En general, la remoci&#243;n de materia org&#225;nica (medida como DQO) result&#243; aceptable;  disminuy&#243; en el RCSB de 308 a 59 mg/L (81%) y en el RCS de 190 a 35 mg/L  (82%), alcanzando la remoci&#243;n de DQO del sistema global un 89%.</FONT></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Conclusiones</B></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> La combinaci&#243;n propuesta de un RCSB y un RCS es promisoria para remover  nitr&#243;geno de aguas residuales de composici&#243;n d&#233;bil, obteni&#233;ndose concentraciones  de NO<SUB>3</SUB>-N y Nitr&#243;geno total (Nt) en el efluente del sistema de 0,06 mg/L  y 21,6 mg/L, respectivamente.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> En el RCSB se alcanz&#243; una formaci&#243;n de nitrato de 91% con respecto al inicial  y una remoci&#243;n de amonio del 82%. Mientras que, en el RCS se obtuvo un  99% de desnitrificaci&#243;n y una tasa espec&#237;fica de desnitrificaci&#243;n de 1,99  mg NO<SUB>3</SUB>-N/ kgSSLM.h.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> El Nt presente en el efluente del sistema combinado sobrepasa la norma  para cuerpos de agua l&#233;nticos, mas no sobrepasa la regulaci&#243;n nacional  de cuerpos de agua. Podr&#237;a esperarse que trabajando con un valor &#243;ptimo  de la fracci&#243;n volum&#233;trica (</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Symbol">a</FONT><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana">) pueda alcanzarse una concentraci&#243;n aceptable  de nitr&#243;geno de acuerdo a las normas vigentes en Venezuela.</FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> <B>Agradecimiento</B></FONT></P>     <P ALIGN="justify"><FONT COLOR="#1f1a17" SIZE="2" FACE="Verdana"> Los autores agradecen al Ing.
