El estudio de la restauración de bosques tropicales se ha concentrado en la identificación de los factores que limitan la regeneración, cuyo manejo permitiría controlar y acelerar la sucesión secundaria. Entre éstos se incluyen: 1) la carencia de dispersión o de propágulos en el banco de semillas, 2) bajas tasas de germinación, 3) bajas tasas de reclutamiento debido a los efectos negativos de las enfermedades, depredación y competencia, o a condiciones físicas adversas. Con base en el análisis de la literatura de 20 años de investigación en la restauración de bosques tropicales, en este trabajo se evalúa el escenario actual y las perspectivas de esta disciplina. Se observa que 64% de los estudios se realizan en la selva húmeda, que 55% de ellos son fundamentalmente descriptivos y que en los estudios experimentales existe la tendencia a abordar uno o dos factores limitantes, en lugar de tener una visión integral y a largo plazo. Sin embargo, la situación resulta prometedora; los trabajos experimentales han crecido exponencialmente desde su inicio y es incipiente la inclusión del componente social en los proyectos. La restauración ecológica está en camino a consolidarse como una disciplina integradora, que incluya los aspectos ecológico, social, y económico, para lograr la recuperación y conservación de los sistemas naturales.]]></p></abstract>

The study of ecological restoration in tropical forests has concentrated on identifying the barriers that limit recovery, with the aim of accelerating secondary succession. These barriers include: 1) lack of dispersal or propagules in the seed bank, 2) low germination rates, and 3) low rates of seedling recruitment due to the negative effects of diseases, predation and competition, or adverse physical conditions. Based on the analysis of literature from the last 20 years on ecological restoration in tropical forests, this work reviews the state of the art and perspectives in this area of research. The analysis indicated that 64% of the studies have been conducted in tropical rain forests, that 55% of them are mainly descriptive, and that the experimental studies tend to evaluate only one or two limiting barriers, rather than concentrating on a long term integrative approach. Nevertheless, there is a promising future for restoration ecology; the experimental approach has grown exponentially and the social component is being included in the projects. Aceptado: 29/08/2003</font></P> <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">¿Por qu&eacute; los Bosques Tropicales?</font></P> </B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Los bosques tropicales son los m&aacute;s antiguos, diversos y ecol&oacute;gicamente complejos (Whitmore, 1997). Sostienen probablemente m&aacute;s de la mitad de todas las formas de vida del planeta (Myers, 1984) y brindan servicios ambientales como la captaci&oacute;n de agua, el mantenimiento del suelo, la fijaci&oacute;n de CO<sub>2</sub>; adem&aacute;s de contener innumerables especies con valor real o potencial. El aumento en la atenci&oacute;n que han recibido se ha debido principalmente a las implicaciones de la deforestaci&oacute;n (Brown y Lugo, 1994). &Eacute;sta genera a nivel regional la p&eacute;rdida del uso forestal, deterioro f&iacute;sico y qu&iacute;mico del suelo, alteraci&oacute;n del balance h&iacute;drico y desestabilizaci&oacute;n de cuencas; a nivel global altera el albedo y el balance de agua atmosf&eacute;rica, pudiendo afectar los patrones clim&aacute;ticos y contribuir al calentamiento global (Houghton, 1991; Lugo, 1992; Whitmore y Sayer, 1992; Whitmore, 1993, 1997). Otra de sus importantes consecuencias es la reducci&oacute;n del h&aacute;bitat y su fragmentaci&oacute;n (Meffe y Carroll, 1994; Murcia, 1995) con la consecuente p&eacute;rdida de la biodiversidad, y la eliminaci&oacute;n de variabilidad gen&eacute;tica, de poblaciones y hasta especies (Saunders <I>et al.</I>, 1991; Whitmore y Sayer, 1992; Brooks <I>et al.</I>, 2002). La degradaci&oacute;n suele comenzar con la sobrexplotaci&oacute;n, y se origina a partir de una compleja interacci&oacute;n de factores ecol&oacute;gicos y socioculturales (Bainbridge, 1990) como el crecimiento poblacional, las necesidades alimentarias, los patrones de uso de los recursos, y los conflictos pol&iacute;tico-econ&oacute;micos relacionados con el manejo de estos &uacute;ltimos. Frente a esta situaci&oacute;n ha surgido la idea de la restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica, como intenci&oacute;n de la reversi&oacute;n de los efectos degradativos de las actividades humanas (p.e<I>.</I> contaminaci&oacute;n, erosi&oacute;n, sobrexplotaci&oacute;n y agotamiento de recursos).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">La pr&aacute;ctica de la restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica en bosques tropicales se inici&oacute; hace varios a&ntilde;os. Fundamentalmente se ha centrado en el an&aacute;lisis de la problem&aacute;tica de la regeneraci&oacute;n secundaria y la reversi&oacute;n del proceso de degradaci&oacute;n. Pero, ¿cu&aacute;les son los factores que limitan la regeneraci&oacute;n y, qu&eacute; resultados se han obtenido hasta ahora?</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En el presente trabajo se describen los factores que limitan la restauraci&oacute;n de bosques tropicales y se analiza el enfoque actual de la investigaci&oacute;n acad&eacute;mica en restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica en estos ecosistemas. Para ello se revisaron revistas cient&iacute;ficas que incluyeran en su enfoque la investigaci&oacute;n en restauraci&oacute;n, ecolog&iacute;a b&aacute;sica, biolog&iacute;a de la conservaci&oacute;n, bot&aacute;nica, sistemas forestales, e ingenier&iacute;a ambiental (<a href="#tabl1">Tabla I</a>). Los per&iacute;odos de revisi&oacute;n fueron variables, principalmente dependiendo del acceso a las fuentes. El criterio de selecci&oacute;n de los estudios fue su orientaci&oacute;n a la recuperaci&oacute;n de ecosistemas, comunidades o paisajes degradados, e incluye actividades como restauraci&oacute;n de suelos y/o cobertura vegetal, aumento de la diversidad espec&iacute;fica y el enriquecimiento ambiental. Finalmente, y en funci&oacute;n de la revisi&oacute;n realizada, se describen algunos lineamientos generales para lograr la recuperaci&oacute;n de los bosques tropicales.</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="tabl1"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1112.jpg" WIDTH=578 HEIGHT=547></font></P>  <B>    
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Los Factores Limitantes en la Regeneraci&oacute;n de Bosques Tropicales</font></P> </B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">La Sociedad para la Restauraci&oacute;n Ecol&oacute;gica (SER, 2002) define restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica como &quot;el proceso de asistencia a la recuperaci&oacute;n de un ecosistema que ha sido degradado, da&ntilde;ado o destru&iacute;do&quot;. En este sentido, en la recuperaci&oacute;n de un bosque deber&iacute;an asistirse su regeneraci&oacute;n y otros procesos funcionales que lo sostienen. Bradshaw (1987) ha propuesto que los principios de la restauraci&oacute;n de ecosistemas terrestres son los mismos que los de la sucesi&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica. Bajo este supuesto, al analizar la potencial restauraci&oacute;n de un bosque tropical, debemos remitirnos a su din&aacute;mica intr&iacute;nseca, es decir: un mosaico de parches en distinto estado de sucesi&oacute;n y en constante cambio. En este contexto, un sitio degradado (p.e. un campo de pastura) podr&iacute;a considerarse como un gran parche potencialmente recolonizable. El proceso de regeneraci&oacute;n natural sobre sitios degradados ha sido observado, pero &eacute;ste resulta mucho m&aacute;s lento que en claros naturales (Uhl <I>et al.</I>, 1988; Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1990, 1991) y no responde a la escala temporal a la que suelen plantearse objetivos de restauraci&oacute;n. Los factores que limitan el establecimiento se definen de acuerdo a su acci&oacute;n sobre las distintas etapas de la regeneraci&oacute;n secundaria, y la importancia relativa de cada uno es altamente variable con el clima, el tipo de suelo, la vegetaci&oacute;n existente, y la historia y tipo de manejo de la tierra, dando particularidad a cada sitio de estudio. No obstante, pueden identificarse una serie de factores limitantes que operan a nivel general (<a href="#fig1">Figura 1</a>).</font></P>      ]]></body>

<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">El primer factor limitante en la regeneraci&oacute;n secundaria es la inmigraci&oacute;n de prop&aacute;gulos (<a href="#fig1">Figura 1a</a>). A medida que aumenta la distancia entre bosque y potrero, la lluvia de semillas sobre este &uacute;ltimo cambia en su cantidad y/o calidad con respecto al bosque. Con la distancia, el n&uacute;mero total de semillas puede disminuir hasta en 90% (Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Holl, 1999; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000) debido en general a la dispersi&oacute;n ineficiente por carencia de dispersores; por otra parte, la composici&oacute;n espec&iacute;fica de la lluvia, de acuerdo a los s&iacute;ndromes de dispersi&oacute;n, no representa la riqueza y diversidad del bosque (Uhl, 1987; &Aacute;lvarez-Buylla y Mart&iacute;nez-Ramos, 1990; Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Holl y Lulow, 1997; Wijdeven <I>et al</I>., 2000; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Cubi&ntilde;a y Aide, 2001). La lluvia de semillas, y consecuentemente el banco, suelen contener una mayor representaci&oacute;n de especies de pastos o de aquellas cuya dispersi&oacute;n es del tipo anem&oacute;cora, mientras que por falta de dispersores (ya que estos no ingresan ni atraviesan el campo) las especies de la selva, que suelen ser zoocoras, se encuentran sub-representadas.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">La matriz de pastos puede actuar como barrera f&iacute;sica e impedir la incorporaci&oacute;n de semillas al suelo. Una vez en el banco, la viabilidad y posterior germinaci&oacute;n depender&aacute;, por un lado, del periodo de latencia y de las condiciones ed&aacute;ficas, y por otro de la depredaci&oacute;n post dispersi&oacute;n y el ataque de pat&oacute;genos (Uhl, 1987; Nepstad<I> et al.</I>, 1990, 1991, 1996; Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Holl y Lulow, 1997; <a href="#fig1"> Figura 1b</a>). Los pastos pueden favorecer la germinaci&oacute;n al evitar la desecaci&oacute;n: reducen la temperatura absoluta del suelo y su variaci&oacute;n diaria (Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Gonz&aacute;lez Montagut, 1996; Holl, 1999; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000). La herbivor&iacute;a (Nepstad<I> et al.</I>, 1990, 1991, 1996; Holl y Quiros-Nietzen, 1999) y los pastos pueden afectar la supervivencia y crecimiento de las pl&aacute;ntulas emergentes al competir por nutrientes (Buschbacher <I>et al</I>., 1988; Uhl y Jordan, 1984; Uhl <I>et al.</I>, 1988; Nepstad <I>et al</I>., 1990; Reiners <I>et al</I>., 1994; Holl, 1998, 1999), agua y/o luz (Ashton <I>et al</I>., 1998; <a href="#fig1"> Figura 1c</a>). Janos (1996) ha sugerido que la ausencia de micorrizas en el suelo puede demorar la regeneraci&oacute;n en &aacute;reas degradadas; sin embargo, otros autores han reportado en sitios degradados niveles de infecci&oacute;n por micorrizas comparables a los del bosque (Fischer <I>et al.</I>, 1994; Allen <I>et al.</I>, 1998). Por &uacute;ltimo, los brinzales establecidos pueden llegar a modificar las condiciones microambientales y ed&aacute;ficas de acuerdo a sus caracter&iacute;sticas ecol&oacute;gicas (fijar nitr&oacute;geno, generar sombra, etc.; <a href="#fig1"> Figura 1d</a>).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">La estrategia m&aacute;s efectiva de restauraci&oacute;n deber&iacute;a tener en cuenta simult&aacute;neamente todos los obst&aacute;culos posibles en la regeneraci&oacute;n secundaria (Holl <I>et al.</I>, 2000), ya que el efecto de una sola sobre un factor puede ser neutralizado por la falta de control sobre otros factores. Al mismo tiempo, las variaciones en el crecimiento de una misma especie de acuerdo al tipo de suelo, clima, grado de degradaci&oacute;n y vegetaci&oacute;n existente, hacen recomendable la realizaci&oacute;n de proyectos a peque&ntilde;a escala (Holl <I>et al.</I>, 2000), que permitan evaluar y distribuir mejor los esfuerzos necesarios para lograr una restauraci&oacute;n m&aacute;s eficiente a escalas mayores.</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">El Enfoque de los Esfuerzos</font></P> </B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Los trabajos revisados se distribuyen en 13 pa&iacute;ses y describen 25 sitios de estudio, que representan distintos tipos de vegetaci&oacute;n. El 64% se enfoca al estudio de la selva alta perennifolia (selva h&uacute;meda); la selva alta subperennifolia representa 14%, el bosque mes&oacute;filo 13%, y los sistemas restantes menos del 7% del total (<a href="#fig2">Figura 2</a>). La atenci&oacute;n observada en los distintos ecosistemas en la literatura no responde a su representaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica (<a href="#tabl2">Tabla II</a>). La selva alta perennifolia se encuentra sobre-representada en un 20%, mientras existe una carencia de estudios en la selva alta subperennifolia y en la selva baja caducifolia (selva seca), cuya representaci&oacute;n en la literatura es 1/2 y 1/4 de su representaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica, respectivamente. Cabe destacar el caso de la selva baja, cuya extensi&oacute;n es comparable a la del bosque mes&oacute;filo, pero el porcentaje de trabajos que la estudian es casi 5 veces menor. Sin embargo, la extensi&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica de estos bosques se encuentra en constante cambio, y es dif&iacute;cil describir el proceso de deforestaci&oacute;n por la inconsistencia en su definici&oacute;n y en los tipos de bosque que se incluye en su an&aacute;lisis (Masera <I>et al.</I>, 1997), lo que dificulta la comparaci&oacute;n de las tasas de p&eacute;rdida (Sayer y Whitmore, 1991) y, consecuentemente la utilizaci&oacute;n de este variable como criterio de selecci&oacute;n de ambiente.</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig2"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1114.jpg" WIDTH=292 HEIGHT=433></font></P>

<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Por otra parte, la situaci&oacute;n pol&iacute;tica y econ&oacute;mica es altamente variable entre los distintos pa&iacute;ses, lo cual podr&iacute;a determinar la distribuci&oacute;n regional y pol&iacute;tica de los estudios. Si bien la mayor&iacute;a de los ecosistemas tropicales existen en pa&iacute;ses en desarrollo (casi la mitad de los bosques se encuentra en el neotr&oacute;pico, y junto a la porci&oacute;n africana contienen el 70% del total; Whitmore, 1993) se detectan algunas ausencias, como la del Amazonas Boliviano-Peruano, lo que podr&iacute;a deberse a carencia de recursos para su estudio. Esto se evidencia con la existencia de un sesgo geogr&aacute;fico (<a href="#fig3">Figura 3</a>) ya que al sumar los trabajos realizados en Costa Rica (29%) y Brasil (23%) tenemos el 52%, mientras el 48% restante se distribuye en 10% en Puerto Rico, 7% en Indonesia, 6% en Australia y Uganda, y 4% o menos para el resto (India, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, Nigeria y Rep&uacute;blica Dominicana). Como se indic&oacute;, la distribuci&oacute;n entre los pa&iacute;ses puede estar asociada con sus recursos humanos y econ&oacute;micos disponibles. Por ejemplo, los estudios en Costa Rica y Puerto Rico son realizados en estaciones biol&oacute;gicas pertenecientes o financiadas por instituciones estadounidenses, en muchos casos propietarias de los terrenos de estudio, lo que facilita la investigaci&oacute;n. Sin embargo, esta distribuci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica debe considerarse a la luz de la presente revisi&oacute;n, que no incluye la totalidad de las revistas cient&iacute;ficas existentes ni la investigaci&oacute;n realizada fuera de este &aacute;mbito.</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig3"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1116.jpg" WIDTH=295 HEIGHT=433></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En t&eacute;rminos de la duraci&oacute;n de los estudios, se observa una tendencia a trabajar en plazos de tiempo medianos a largos (<a href="#fig4">Figura 4</a>). Los trabajos de m&aacute;s de 3 a&ntilde;os alcanzan 22% y estudian la regeneraci&oacute;n natural o el establecimiento de nuevas especies (Uhl <I>et al.</I>, 1982; Parrotta, 1993, 1995, 1999; Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Parrotta <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Parrotta y Knowles, 1999; Montagnini, 2000; Hummell, 2000; Posada <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Carnevale y Montagnini, 2002), sea en sistemas naturales o bajo plantaciones comerciales. Los que duran entre 1 y 3 a&ntilde;os comprenden 29% y en general se enfocan al estudio del crecimiento y supervivencia de pl&aacute;ntulas (Montagnini, 1992; Gerhardt, 1993; Parrotta, 1993; Butterfield y Fischer, 1994; Guariguata <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Ashton <I>et al.</I>, 1997, 1998; Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Otsamo <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Viana <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Slocum, 2001; Otsamo, 2002), pero muy pocos a la competencia de &eacute;stas con pasturas o herb&aacute;ceas (Holl y Quiros-Nietzen, 1997; Otsamo, 2000a; Peterson y Haines, 2000), al fen&oacute;meno de herbivor&iacute;a (Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1996; Holl, 1998; Chapman <I>et al.</I>, 2002), o a las condiciones ed&aacute;ficas (Montagnini y Sancho, 1990). Los trabajos puntuales comprenden 25% y describen situaciones instant&aacute;neas; en algunos casos se compara el establecimiento bajo distintos tipos de plantaci&oacute;n o estados de sucesi&oacute;n (Kuusipalo <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Chapman y Chapman, 1996; Haggar <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Murcia, 1997; Powers <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Otsamo, 2000b; Zanne y Chapman, 2001), en otros las condiciones ed&aacute;ficas (Montagnini <I>et al</I>., 1995; Rhoades <I>et al.</I>, 1998) o microambientales en las que &eacute;stas crecen (Slocum, 2000). Tambi&eacute;n se observa el an&aacute;lisis de la estructura de los sitios de acuerdo a variables como riqueza y/o composici&oacute;n (Zahawi y Augspurger, 1999; Rivera <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Aide <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Parrotta y Knowles, 2001); estos trabajos no manipulan el sistema de estudio, m&aacute;s bien suelen ser los que brindan la informaci&oacute;n de base para posteriores experimentos. Los trabajos de menos de 1 a&ntilde;o de duraci&oacute;n (15%) analizan la lluvia y banco de semillas (Chapman y Chapman, 1999; Slocum y Horwitz, 2000; Wijdeven <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Cubi&ntilde;a y Aide, 2001), la germinaci&oacute;n (Ashton <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Ganade y Brown, 2002), la competencia (Sun <I>et al.</I>, 1995) y s&oacute;lo un trabajo analiza las tres variables en este per&iacute;odo de tiempo (Aide y Cavelier, 1994). Por &uacute;ltimo, un 9% no define claramente la duraci&oacute;n del estudio en sus escritos, pero en algunos casos se trata de trabajos que describen varios experimentos simult&aacute;neamente, y &eacute;stos tienen diferentes extensiones de tiempo (Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1990, 1991; Holl<I> et al.</I>,<I> </I>1999).</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig4"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1117.jpg" WIDTH=296 HEIGHT=355></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Existe una tendencia al estudio de pocos factores limitantes; la cantidad de trabajos decrece conforme aumenta el n&uacute;mero de factores incluidos (<a href="#fig5">Figura 5</a>). Esto se relaciona con la duraci&oacute;n de los estudios, ya que el an&aacute;lisis del proceso de restablecimiento requiere de un tiempo de seguimiento que pocos trabajos pueden completar. Los trabajos que incluyen mayor n&uacute;mero de factores son aquellos relacionados con la supervivencia de las pl&aacute;ntulas, y las condiciones en que crecen, sean bi&oacute;ticas como competencia (Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000) o abi&oacute;ticas como microclima y suelo (Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1996; Holl, 1999; Ganade y Brown, 2002). Destaca que 55% no estudia experimentalmente ning&uacute;n factor; en algunos casos describen la estructura y composici&oacute;n de bosques en un estado de la regeneraci&oacute;n natural, o bajo distintas plantaciones (especies nativas, ex&oacute;ticas, comerciales) en un tiempo dado (Uhl, 1987; Parrotta, 1993, 1995, 1999; Kuusipalo <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Chapman y Chapman, 1996; Ashton <I>et al.</I>, 1997, 1998; Haggar <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Murcia, 1997; Powers <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Otsamo, 2000a, 2000b, 2002; Posada <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Rivera <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Carl Leopold <I>et al.</I>, 2001; Zahawi y Augspurger, 1999; Zanne y Chapman, 2001; Carnevale y Montagnini, 2002). Sin embargo, su caracter&iacute;stica descriptiva no descalifica la informaci&oacute;n generada. Varios son los estudios sobre la regeneraci&oacute;n natural posterior a disturbio o uso humano, cuya orientaci&oacute;n no es expl&iacute;citamente la restauraci&oacute;n, pero brindan informaci&oacute;n pertinente para su desarrollo (Uhl, 1982, 1987; Uhl <I>et al.,</I> 1982). En otros casos se analiza la composici&oacute;n y densidad de los bancos o la lluvia de semillas (Toh <I>et al.</I>, 1999; Holl <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Slocum y Horwitz, 2000; Wijdeven <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Cubi&ntilde;a y Aide, 2001), o las caracter&iacute;sticas ed&aacute;ficas o microambientales de diferentes sitios (Montagnini y Sancho, 1990; Gichuru, 1994; Haggar y Ewel, 1994; Montagnini <I>et al.</I>, 1994; 1995; Rhoades <I>et al.</I>, 1998, Montagnini, 2001), como comparaci&oacute;n de la situaci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica de sitios degradados con el bosque primario, sin analizar la importancia relativa de los factores. Estos trabajos determinan asociaciones entre factores o componentes del sistema; por ejemplo, un mayor reclutamiento o germinaci&oacute;n bajo &aacute;rboles remanentes, donde la cobertura de pastos es menor, permite suponer la existencia de competencia (Peterson y Haines, 2000; Posada <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Chapman <I>et al.</I>, 2002).</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig5"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1118.jpg" WIDTH=294 HEIGHT=309></font></P>

<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Entre los trabajos que estudian los factores limitantes, en un contexto tem&aacute;tico, 38% monitorea la supervivencia y crecimiento de pl&aacute;ntulas, pero s&oacute;lo 29% estudia el microambiente en que &eacute;stas crecen (<a href="#fig6">Figura 6</a>). El 13% estudia el banco, la lluvia o depredaci&oacute;n de semillas, y apenas 10% estudia la competencia con la vegetaci&oacute;n remanente, y 10% el proceso de germinaci&oacute;n.</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig6"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1119.jpg" WIDTH=290 HEIGHT=608></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">De los 25 sitios de estudio, s&oacute;lo en 18 (72%) se brinda informaci&oacute;n sobre las caracter&iacute;sticas del suelo, lo que no se corresponde con el n&uacute;mero de trabajos, siendo necesario leer m&aacute;s de uno para conocer las condiciones ed&aacute;ficas de los sitios estudiados. Ninguno de los sitios presenta suelos de alta fertilidad (<a href="#fig7">Figura 7</a>). El nivel de fertilidad es bajo a moderado en 67%, moderado en 25% y moderado a alto en apenas 8%. Esto implica que las condiciones ecol&oacute;gicas del suelo ser&iacute;an limitantes para la recolonizaci&oacute;n; sin embargo, los trabajos muestran que el estr&eacute;s ed&aacute;fico no suele ser el factor m&aacute;s importante para este proceso (Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1990, 1991; Holl <I>et al.</I>, 1999).</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="fig7"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1120.jpg" WIDTH=292 HEIGHT=373></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Muchos autores han destacado la importancia de la integraci&oacute;n de la comunidad local en las actividades de recuperaci&oacute;n o conservaci&oacute;n de sistemas naturales (Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Viana <I>et al.</I>, 1997), as&iacute; como la restauraci&oacute;n de sistemas hacia una condici&oacute;n m&aacute;s productiva. Sin embargo, escasos estudios incluyen la aproximaci&oacute;n social. En general proponen la evaluaci&oacute;n de los costos y beneficios de los proyectos (Mesquita, 2000; Carnevale y Montagnini, 2002) de forma tal que a su objetivo de conservaci&oacute;n se sumen otros, con fines productivos para la comunidad (Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1991; Montagnini, 1992; Gichuru, 1994). Tambi&eacute;n se rescatan las ventajas del conocimiento local (Montagnini <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Rhoades <I>et al.</I>, 1998), y la participaci&oacute;n de instituciones locales (Montagnini y Sancho, 1990; Butterfield y Fisher, 1994).</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En resumen, existe una sobre-representaci&oacute;n de la selva alta perennifolia que no se relaciona con su extensi&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica ni su grado de amenaza, sino que se asocia al sesgo geogr&aacute;fico, es decir, a cuestiones pol&iacute;tico-econ&oacute;micas y a la atenci&oacute;n hist&oacute;rica que ha recibido frente a otros tipos de bosque. Por otra parte, los trabajos tienden a ser de plazo mediano a largo, con la ventaja de que permiten una mayor integraci&oacute;n de resultados, y la desventaja de no ajustarse siempre a la escala temporal de las prioridades de conservaci&oacute;n. Sin embargo, suelen enfocarse al an&aacute;lisis de la supervivencia y crecimiento de las pl&aacute;ntulas y, aunque soslayan los factores limitantes iniciales (inmigraci&oacute;n de prop&aacute;gulos, germinaci&oacute;n), obtienen resultados concretos a corto plazo. El 54% de los trabajos realiza experimentos de manipulaci&oacute;n, lo que permite establecer causalidades. El n&uacute;mero de este tipo de trabajos ha crecido exponencialmente en los &uacute;ltimos a&ntilde;os, con mayor velocidad que los del tipo descriptivo.</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Perspectivas a Futuro</font></P> </B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">El restablecimiento de bosques tropicales es factible ecol&oacute;gicamente ya que la recolonizaci&oacute;n natural se ha observado en varios trabajos (Uhl <I>et al.,</I> 1988; Nepstad <I>et al.,</I> 1990). Sin embargo, las necesidades ecol&oacute;gicas, socioecon&oacute;micas y a veces est&eacute;ticas no se satisfacen en la escala temporal en la que sucede tal recolonizaci&oacute;n.</font></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Existen distintas estrategias para superar las limitaciones en la recolonizaci&oacute;n de bosques en sitios degradados. Dada la variedad de disturbios y sitios en que ello ocurren, es necesario el desarrollo de t&eacute;cnicas f&iacute;sicas, qu&iacute;micas y biol&oacute;gicas que puedan ser utilizadas independiente y/o conjuntamente para alcanzar los resultados deseados a partir de diferentes condiciones iniciales, visi&oacute;n que es resumida por Wyant <I>et al.</I> (1995) como la generaci&oacute;n de t&eacute;cnicas que favorezcan: i) la estabilidad f&iacute;sica del sitio apropiada (flujo de nutrientes, r&eacute;gimen h&iacute;drico, etc.), ii) el desarrollo de suelo, y, iii) la facilitaci&oacute;n de la invasi&oacute;n de vegetaci&oacute;n nativa.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En algunos pastizales o campos ganaderos del tr&oacute;pico, se dejan &aacute;rboles remanentes para la utilizaci&oacute;n de sombra por el ganado. En estos casos se ha propuesto su uso (Guevara <I>et al.</I>, 1992, 1994; Guevara y Laborde, 1993), ya que pueden funcionar como &quot;facilitadores&quot; o &quot;catalizadores&quot; que aceleran el proceso de regeneraci&oacute;n (Rhoades <I>et al.,</I> 1998; Aide <I>et al</I>., 2000; Holl <I>et al.,</I> 2000; Hummel, 2000; Otsamo, 2000a, 2000b; Zimmerman <I>et al.,</I> 2000), pueden reducir la cobertura de pastos y su competencia, afectar aspectos f&iacute;sicos (mayor estructura y porosidad) y qu&iacute;micos (retenci&oacute;n de agua, transferencia de nutrientes y materia org&aacute;nica) del suelo y favorecer una mayor infecci&oacute;n por micorrizas (Montagnini, 1992; Montagnini, 2000; Montagnini y Sancho, 1990; Rhoades <I>et al</I>., 1998; Parrotta, 1999; <a href="#fig2"> Figura 2d</a>). Al mismo tiempo, pueden ser capaces de modificar el microclima atenuando la insolaci&oacute;n directa (Loik y Holl, 1999), las fluctuaciones diarias de temperatura y humedad relativa (G&oacute;mez-Pompa y Del Amo, 1985; Guevara<I> et al.,</I> 1992, 1994), adem&aacute;s de funcionar como atractores de agentes de dispersi&oacute;n, como aves y mam&iacute;feros (Guevara <I>et a</I>l., 1992, 1994; Guevara y Laborde, 1993; Estrada <I>et al</I>., 1993; Aide y Cavelier, 1994; Toh <I>et al., </I>1999; Slocum y Horwitz, 2000). Se ha observado que las semillas que llegan a las pasturas se concentran bajo estos &aacute;rboles (Nepstad <I>et al</I>., 1990; Guevara <I>et al.</I>, 1992, Guevara y Laborde, 1993; Mart&iacute;nez-Ramos y Soto-Castro, 1993; Vieira <I>et al</I>., 1994; Wijdeven <I>et al</I>., 2000), lo que se traduce en un aumento en la densidad, supervivencia y crecimiento de pl&aacute;ntulas respecto a los pastos (Uhl <I>et al</I>., 1982; Uhl, 1987; Vieira <I>et al</I>., 1994; Holl <I>et al</I>., 2000; Guariguata <I>et al</I>., 1995). Como segunda alternativa, se plantea el potencial de los cultivos forestales como frentes de regeneraci&oacute;n (Parrotta, 1992, 1995, 1999; Nepstad <I>et al.</I>, 1996; Ashton <I>et al</I>., 1997, 1998; Murcia, 1997; Parrotta <I>et al</I>., 1997).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En cualquiera de los dos casos, la identidad de las especies elegidas es un factor determinante sobre el ecosistema (Butterfield y Fisher, 1994; Cavelier, 1995; Montagnini <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Parrotta, 1995, 1999; Lugo, 1997; Powers <I>et al</I>., 1997; Montagnini, 2000; Slocum, 2001), ya sea a nivel bi&oacute;tico (cobertura de especies competidoras) o abi&oacute;tico (humedad relativa, temperatura, luz, fertilidad del suelo, etc.). La introducci&oacute;n deliberada de especies le&ntilde;osas podr&iacute;a ser entonces una herramienta conveniente para favorecer la recolonizaci&oacute;n en potreros (Vieira <I>et al.</I>, 1994; Sun <I>et al.</I>, 1995; Holl <I>et al.</I>, 2000; Zimmerman <I>et al.</I>, 2000) principalmente porque &eacute;stas actuar&iacute;an en la formaci&oacute;n de microambientes adecuados f&iacute;sica y qu&iacute;micamente para el establecimiento de nuevas especies (Bradshaw, 1987).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En los criterios de elecci&oacute;n del sitio a restaurar influyen factores que tienen que ver con su posici&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica y funci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica (<a href="#tabl3">Tabla III</a>). Las riberas, por ejemplo, pueden funcionar como corredores, as&iacute; como las islas pueden actuar como posteriores fuentes de prop&aacute;gulos hacia otras tierras. Por otro lado, existen limitaciones debidas a los reg&iacute;menes de propiedad de la tierra, los recursos econ&oacute;micos para solventar rentas o el capital humano, las condiciones legales o administrativas, y la disponibilidad de tiempo. En cada sistema de estudio, las condiciones ecol&oacute;gicas y el nivel de degradaci&oacute;n o amenaza tienen especial influencia en la elecci&oacute;n de la estrategia de restauraci&oacute;n. Una especie animal de gran porte, por ejemplo, requerir&aacute; grandes extensiones de h&aacute;bitat en buen estado de conservaci&oacute;n, mientras que determinados ecosistemas acu&aacute;ticos pueden sostenerse con peque&ntilde;as obras de ingenier&iacute;a, como canales para regular y restablecer los flujos h&iacute;dricos en un manglar. En los tr&oacute;picos, la cercan&iacute;a de un potrero a fragmentos remanentes de selva puede determinar su interacci&oacute;n con &eacute;stos, por lo que cualquier actividad que aumente la conectividad ser&aacute; beneficiosa.</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="tabl3"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1121.jpg" WIDTH=578 HEIGHT=460></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Como se indic&oacute;, en este tipo de situaciones se ha utilizado la siembra directa de le&ntilde;osas, cuya capacidad &quot;facilitadora&quot; depender&aacute; de sus efectos sobre las condiciones del sitio (Kuusipalo <I>et al.</I>, 1995), de forma tal que los criterios de selecci&oacute;n deber&aacute;n definirse en funci&oacute;n sus capacidades y de las necesidades de acuerdo al nivel de deterioro (<a href="#tabl4">Tabla IV</a>). Tambi&eacute;n deben tenerse en cuenta su procedencia o raza (Evans, 1999) de forma tal de utilizar la variedad gen&eacute;tica adecuada (Harrington, 1999). En sitios con suelos muy degradados pueden sembrarse especies capaces de mejorar determinada condici&oacute;n, como las asociadas con organismos fijadores de nitr&oacute;geno, otras que favorecen el aumento de materia org&aacute;nica en el suelo por su gran producci&oacute;n de hojarasca, o las que favorecen al aumento de la disponibilidad de cationes (Harrington, 1999). Las especies de r&aacute;pido crecimiento pueden reducir la cobertura de pastos y disminuir los niveles de insolaci&oacute;n, las zooc&oacute;ricas atraen dispersores que acarrean nuevas semillas. Otros criterios de selecci&oacute;n pueden relacionarse con la producci&oacute;n de, por ejemplo, frutos comestibles o alimento para animales. Tambi&eacute;n deben considerarse especies que, aunque no mejoren las condiciones ecol&oacute;gicas, presenten caracter&iacute;sticas que hacen necesaria su propagaci&oacute;n (raras, amenazadas, pobres dispersoras), o simplemente, aquellas que est&eacute;n m&aacute;s disponibles (Harrington, 1999).</font></P>      <P align="justify"><a name="tabl4"></a></P>      <P align="center"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/inci/v28n10/Image1122.jpg" WIDTH=578 HEIGHT=460></font></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En muchos casos puede resultar dif&iacute;cil establecer grandes &aacute;reas con objetivos &uacute;nicos de restauraci&oacute;n, y se plantea el uso de plantaciones forestales comerciales para alcanzar metas de conservaci&oacute;n (Parrotta, 1992, 1993, 1995; Lugo <I>et al.</I>, 1993; Chapman y Chapman, 1996; Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Parrotta <I>et al.</I>, 1997; Parrotta and Knowles, 1999, 2001; Otsamo, 2000b, 2002) ya que cumplen con tres importantes roles: generan productos, mejoran el suelo y aceleran la sucesi&oacute;n secundaria del bosque (Parrotta, 1993) con el consecuente aumento de la diversidad espec&iacute;fica. El &eacute;xito de estos proyectos parece ser dependiente de factores relacionados, en primer lugar, con la selecci&oacute;n de especies, su densidad de plantaci&oacute;n (Otsamo, 2002), y su disposici&oacute;n espacial; se plantea que la disposici&oacute;n agrupada es m&aacute;s eficiente que la disposici&oacute;n uniforme en la modificaci&oacute;n del microclima y en la atracci&oacute;n de dispersores (Harrington, 1999). En segundo lugar, pueden ser determinantes la ubicaci&oacute;n con respecto a fuentes de prop&aacute;gulos, la disponibilidad de agentes dispersores, y las aproximaciones de manejo (Parrotta, 1993). Por &uacute;ltimo, el componente social no puede ser despreciado. Es necesario considerar los beneficios biol&oacute;gicos potenciales de las plantaciones en conjunto con aspectos sociales, econ&oacute;micos y financieros.</font></P>  <B>    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Conclusiones</font></P> </B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Las tendencias observadas en las investigaciones sobre restauraci&oacute;n de bosques tropicales son prometedoras, a&uacute;n m&aacute;s teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones del presente estudio, que no incluy&oacute; trabajos existentes fuera de revistas cient&iacute;ficas, como informes de gobiernos, ONG’s u organizaciones privadas. La restauraci&oacute;n no se limita al &aacute;mbito cient&iacute;fico, y muchos de los resultados actuales se deben a proyectos que, aunque no incluyan la restauraci&oacute;n como concepto o parte del t&iacute;tulo, tienen objetivos afines. Tal es el caso de actividades de reforestaciones o de reintroducci&oacute;n de especies.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">En los trabajos revisados existe un sesgo hacia el estudio de la selva alta perennifolia, soslayando la importancia de otros tipos de bosque; pero esto no debe considerarse desventajoso, ya que no s&oacute;lo permitir&aacute; el avance del conocimiento sobre el funcionamiento de este ecosistema, sino que parte de los resultados podr&iacute;a ser extrapolado a otros tipos de bosque, aunque el l&iacute;mite de esta extrapolaci&oacute;n debe ser cuidadosamente establecido en cada caso.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Si bien la mitad de los trabajos se limitan a una perspectiva descriptiva, las correlaciones que se proponen pueden actuar como orientadores de experimentos posteriores, y esto es demostrado por la creciente presencia, a lo largo de los a&ntilde;os, de trabajos experimentales donde se establecen causalidades entre factores y variables.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Se ha discutido la factibilidad de la restauraci&oacute;n debido a varias razones. En primer lugar por la dificultad de reconstruir la enorme riqueza espec&iacute;fica de estos bosques. En segundo lugar, no conocemos por completo la composici&oacute;n espec&iacute;fica de la comunidad, ni el tama&ntilde;o relativo de sus poblaciones, ni los requerimientos de h&aacute;bitat de todas las especies. Adem&aacute;s, la complejidad de las interacciones entre &eacute;stas es tal, que puede resultar imposible predecir la evoluci&oacute;n del sistema bajo la elecci&oacute;n de cierto n&uacute;mero de especies. Por &uacute;ltimo, los fragmentos remanentes de bosque frecuentemente se localizan en las zonas menos productivas, por lo cual no son representativos del tipo original. Si a todo esto se agrega la naturaleza estoc&aacute;stica de la sucesi&oacute;n de los bosques (Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997), ¿podemos entonces lograr su restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica? ¿Y si podemos, c&oacute;mo lo hacemos?</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">El grado de amenaza que sufren los bosques tropicales es el resultado de la interacci&oacute;n de varios componentes: densidad poblacional, situaci&oacute;n socioecon&oacute;mica de la comunidad, intereses pol&iacute;ticos nacionales e internacionales que determinan el uso y abuso de los recursos, y existencia de recursos financieros o intelectuales para proyectos de conservaci&oacute;n. Todos estos componentes forman el complejo escenario de la restauraci&oacute;n, la cual, para ser exitosa, deber&aacute; contener no s&oacute;lo esta variedad de factores que act&uacute;an sobre los procesos de degradaci&oacute;n y reconstrucci&oacute;n, sino tambi&eacute;n la diversidad de situaciones de los sistemas naturales en cuanto a sus caracter&iacute;sticas ecol&oacute;gicas, socioculturales y condici&oacute;n de degradaci&oacute;n.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Por otra parte, no se puede despreciar el componente social de la restauraci&oacute;n. La participaci&oacute;n social es determinante, no s&oacute;lo por cuestiones &eacute;ticas. La restauraci&oacute;n requiere desarrollar m&eacute;todos para cuantificar los servicios que el ecosistema brinda y poder entonces demostrar el valor econ&oacute;mico de &eacute;ste, sea intacto o restaurado (Holl y Howarth, 2000). Los ec&oacute;logos dan por hecho que los beneficios ambientales de los bosques tropicales son evidentes, pero para las comunidades locales pueden no ser aparentes o ser insuficientes para superar los beneficios econ&oacute;micos de los sistemas productivos (Mesquita, 2000). Por ello es indispensable involucrarlas en cualquier programa (Lamb <I>et al.</I>, 1997, Viana <I>et al.</I>, 1997). El &eacute;xito depender&aacute; de las ventajas y desventajas de la presencia del bosque (Mesquita, 2000).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Los caminos para la restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica de los bosques tropicales son diversos, y depender&aacute;n en gran parte de la situaci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica, socioecon&oacute;mica y pol&iacute;tica del sitio en cuesti&oacute;n. A&uacute;n hace falta estudiar los factores que limitan la regeneraci&oacute;n de los bosques, pero las limitaciones pol&iacute;tico administrativas suelen ser las m&aacute;s frecuentes y determinantes. Sin pol&iacute;ticas p&uacute;blicas que apoyen una visi&oacute;n de conservaci&oacute;n del ambiente que incluya la conservaci&oacute;n y la restauraci&oacute;n y recuperaci&oacute;n de sitios improductivos o muy degradados, cualquier meta ecol&oacute;gica se ver&aacute; truncada por posteriores da&ntilde;os o abusos en el uso de los recursos.
