Os antigos processos de colonização e migração humana e a recente tendência de globalização são os principais responsáveis pela transposição das barreiras geográficas e introdução de espécies em regiões fora de sua distribuição original. Na designação das espécies introduzidas, a terminologia adotada eventualmente pode levar uma falta de operacionalidade das definições confundindo a interpretação dos paradigmas relacionados ao processo de invasão. De acordo com a literatura, os seguintes critérios, i) biogeográfico, ii) crescimento da população e iii) dispersão na nova área, deveriam ser tomados em conta para evitar interpretações subjetivas. A maioria dos modelos apresentados se encontram incertos nos mesmos paradigmas para explicar os estados do processo de invasão (chegada, estabelecimento e invasão) embora cada modelo tenha seus próprios conceitos. Muitos autores consideram tanto as características das espécies invasoras, como as características dos ambientes invadidos para explicar o sucesso das espécies e o estabelecimento. O uso de claros, bem estabelecidos uso de conceitos e não subjetivos de espécie introduzida e invasora bem como de seus derivados, é crucial para unificar os paradigmas do processo de invasão.]]></p></abstract>

The ancient processes of human migration and settlement, and the recent globalization trends are the main responsible factors for the transposition of geographic barriers by organisms and species introduction in regions outside their original distribution range. In order to designate introduced species, the adopted terminology may eventually lead to a lack of operational definitions, misleading the interpretation of paradigms concerning the invasion process. According to the literature, the criteria i) biogeographic, ii) population growth, and iii) spreading in the invaded region, should be taken into account as a manner to avoid subjective interpretations. Most of the presented models are inserted in the same paradigms to explain the status of the invasion process (arrival, establishment and invasion), although each model has its own concepts. Many authors consider both characteristics of the invader species and of the invaded environments to explain species success and establishment. The use of clear concepts, well established and non subjective concepts of introduced and invading species as well as its derivatives is crucial to unify the paradigms of the invasion process.]]></p></abstract>

Em geral a maioria das esp&eacute;cies nos continentes confina-se a tipos particulares de ecossistemas, estas s&atilde;o conhecidas como esp&eacute;cies end&ecirc;micas (McNeely, 2001).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">As barreiras geogr&aacute;ficas durante muito tempo limitaram o movimento das esp&eacute;cies nativas ou ind&iacute;genas, ou seja, aquelas encontradas historicamente em uma regi&atilde;o ou ecossistema. Por exemplo, filtros biogeogr&aacute;ficos tais como glacia&ccedil;&otilde;es e barreiras geogr&aacute;ficas evitam que algumas esp&eacute;cies colonizem certos corpos de &aacute;gua ou regi&otilde;es elevadas. As esp&eacute;cies que passam por estes filtros s&atilde;o capazes de tolerar as condi&ccedil;&otilde;es abi&oacute;ticas (filtro fisiol&oacute;gico), passando a interagir com as esp&eacute;cies presentes (filtro bi&oacute;tico) (<a href="#fig1">Figura 1a</a>). Desta forma, ao contr&aacute;rio do esperado se todos os continentes fossem somente um, as barreiras proporcionaram uma riqueza muito maior para o planeta (Vermeij, 1996; Rahel, 2000). Com o surgimento do istmo do Panam&aacute;, aproximadamente tr&ecirc;s milh&otilde;es de anos, acelerou-se um massivo evento de invas&otilde;es biol&oacute;gicas entre a Am&eacute;rica do Norte e do Sul, conhecido como o grande interc&acirc;mbio bi&oacute;tico Americano (GIBA; Vermeij, 1991). Neste interc&acirc;mbio, nem todos os t&aacute;xons foram igualmente bem sucedidos, nem as faunas de ambos continentes foram igualmente afetadas (Rodr&iacute;guez, 2001).</font></P>     <P align="center"><a name="fig1"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/inci/v32n9/art04fig1.jpg" width="445" height="376"></a></P>     
<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Os primeiros processos de coloniza&ccedil;&atilde;o e migra&ccedil;&atilde;o humana para os diferentes continentes, h&aacute; mais de 100 mil anos (McNeely, 2001), foram os principais respons&aacute;veis pela transposi&ccedil;&atilde;o das barreiras geogr&aacute;ficas e introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cies em regi&otilde;es fora de sua distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o original (Elton, 1958). O recente processo de globaliza&ccedil;&atilde;o acelerou ainda mais a dispers&atilde;o das esp&eacute;cies. Com as exporta&ccedil;&otilde;es agr&iacute;colas, o com&eacute;rcio de animais, o controle biol&oacute;gico, a manipula&ccedil;&atilde;o de ecossistemas, a recrea&ccedil;&atilde;o e mesmo introdu&ccedil;&otilde;es acidentais incrementaram progressivamente o movimento de esp&eacute;cies que alcan&ccedil;ou no s&eacute;culo passado, n&iacute;veis sem precedentes (Moyle e Ellsworth, 2004).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Dessa forma, a introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cies constitui um grande problema para a ecologia dos ecossistemas, afetando os principais tipos de intera&ccedil;&otilde;es interespec&iacute;ficas como: preda&ccedil;&atilde;o, competi&ccedil;&atilde;o, herb&iacute;vora, parasitismo e mutualismo (Fuller <I>et al</I>., 1999).</font></P>  <B>    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Terminologia Associada aos Organismos Introduzidos</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">As introdu&ccedil;&otilde;es,<B> </B>tanto intencionais como acidentais implicam<B> </B>na movimenta&ccedil;&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cies (potencialmente invasoras) efetuada pelo homem para outro ecossistema ou regi&atilde;o onde estas n&atilde;o s&atilde;o historicamente encontradas (<a href="#fig1">Figura 1b</a>).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para designar esp&eacute;cies introduzidas s&atilde;o utilizados termos tais como i) esp&eacute;cies n&atilde;o ind&iacute;genas (ENI),<I> </I>ii) alien&iacute;genas,<I> </I>iii) n&atilde;o nativas, iv) estrangeiras, v) ex&oacute;ticas, vi) transplantadas, e vii) al&oacute;ctones. Entretanto, dependendo da zona geogr&aacute;fica de origem da esp&eacute;cie, dois tipos de termos s&atilde;o reconhecidos: ex&oacute;tico, para designar os organismos provenientes de outro pa&iacute;s, e transplantado (Fuller <I>et al., </I>1999) ou al&oacute;ctone (Agostinho e J&uacute;lio Jr, 1996)<I>,</I> que se refere aos organismos deslocados de sua zona geogr&aacute;fica nativa, dentro do mesmo pa&iacute;s (Shafland e Lewis, 1984; Fuller <I>et al., </I>1999; Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Gido <I>et al</I>. (2004) classificaram as esp&eacute;cies de peixes introduzidos na Am&eacute;rica do Norte como: ex&oacute;ticas, as esp&eacute;cies provenientes de outros pa&iacute;ses (ex.<I> Cyprinus carpio</I>); esp&eacute;cies regionais n&atilde;o nativas, aquelas de distribui&ccedil;&otilde;es nativas na Am&eacute;rica do Norte, por&eacute;m introduzidas em outros Estados (ex. <I>Morone americana</I>); e esp&eacute;cies de outras bacias de drenagem, aquelas nativas de algumas bacias dos estados do Kansas e Oklahoma, por&eacute;m introduzidas em outras (ex. <I>Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis e Pimephales vigilax)</I>. Com o objetivo de padronizar a nomenclatura, os termos esp&eacute;cies regionais n&atilde;o nativas, e esp&eacute;cies de outras bacias de drenagem<B> </B>podem ser substitu&iacute;dos por al&oacute;ctone, ou seja, deslocadas dentro do pa&iacute;s.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Os termos alien&iacute;gena,<B><I> </I> </B>n&atilde;o nativa,<B><I> </I> </B>estrangeira e ex&oacute;tica<B><I> </I> </B>s&atilde;o utilizados como sin&ocirc;nimos para definir qualquer tipo de esp&eacute;cie introduzida, levando a uma confus&atilde;o de terminologia. Segundo Mack <I>et al</I>.<I> </I>(2000), toda esp&eacute;cie introduzida poderia ser chamada de esp&eacute;cie n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena (ENI), especialmente quando a proced&ecirc;ncia desta &eacute; incerta. Al&eacute;m de claro e entend&iacute;vel e por sugerir que toda ENI &eacute; retirada de sua &aacute;rea de distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o natural, esse termo &eacute; amplamente encontrado (Fuller <I>et al</I>.,<I> </I>1999; MacIsaac, <I>et al., </I>2001; Ross <I>et al</I>., 2001; Rahel, 2000; Colautti e<I> </I>MacIsaac,<I> </I>2004) e n&atilde;o tem uma conota&ccedil;&atilde;o subjetiva e antropoc&ecirc;ntrica como os termos mencionados no come&ccedil;o deste par&aacute;grafo. Neste sentido, preferimos usar o termo esp&eacute;cie n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena (ENI) para designar qualquer classifica&ccedil;&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cie introduzida.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">O que deve ser levado em conta &eacute; que toda esp&eacute;cie introduzida &eacute; potencialmente invasora, mas nem toda esp&eacute;cie introduzida &eacute; invasora. Por esse motivo &eacute; importante saber a diferen&ccedil;a entre uma esp&eacute;cie introduzida (esp&eacute;cie n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena - ENI) e uma invasora. A possibilidade de que uma ENI se torne invasora depende de suas caracter&iacute;sticas fisiol&oacute;gicas e ecol&oacute;gicas para aclimatar-se ao novo ambiente.</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Origens da Ecologia de Invas&atilde;o e o Problema com a Terminologia</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">O termo invas&atilde;o foi utilizado pela primeira vez (Simberloff, 2003) em um contexto ecol&oacute;gico por Goeze em seu livro <I>Pflanzengeographie f&uuml;r G&auml;rtner und Freunde des Gartenbaues</I>, em 1882<I>,</I> no qual reportou a invas&atilde;o da <I>Mangifera indica</I> L. (mangueira) na Jamaica como exemplo de uma invas&atilde;o ben&eacute;fica. Dessa forma, o termo foi utilizado sem nenhuma rela&ccedil;&atilde;o com os impactos negativos ou positivos do processo. Palmer, em 1899, foi o primeiro a chamar a aten&ccedil;&atilde;o sobre aspectos negativos das esp&eacute;cies invasoras, observando que porcos, cabras, coelhos e gatos haviam devastado a biota nativa nas &Iacute;ndias e ilhas do Pac&iacute;fico. Howard, em 1898, escreveu sobre a amea&ccedil;a de insetos introduzidos e Marlatt, em 1917, advertiu sobre o impacto potencial dos insetos introduzidos e seus pat&oacute;genos em plantas do g&ecirc;nero <I>Castanea</I> (castanha) e <I>Picea glauca</I> (pinheiro branco). No entanto, a promo&ccedil;&atilde;o da ecologia da invas&atilde;o como uma nova disciplina ocorreu apenas por Elton (1958), com o lan&ccedil;amento de seu livro sobre invas&otilde;es de plantas e animais. Apesar de n&atilde;o definir os termos invas&atilde;o ou invasores, Elton empregou o termo invasor referindo-se ao interc&acirc;mbio de fauna no Pleistoceno, desenvolvendo duas correntes no conceito de invas&atilde;o: uma relacionada &agrave;s caracter&iacute;sticas das esp&eacute;cies invasoras e outra sobre as caracter&iacute;sticas do habitat invadido. De acordo com Vermeij (1996), a biologia da invas&atilde;o atualmente tem recebido contribui&ccedil;&otilde;es de diferentes disciplinas, tais como a ecologia, a biogeografia e a biologia evolutiva, atraindo a aten&ccedil;&atilde;o de ec&oacute;logos em todo o mundo. Neste sentido, autores tais como Brown (1989), Pimm (1989) e Lodge (1993), forneceram modelos conceituais centrados tanto em caracter&iacute;sticas biol&oacute;gicas e ecol&oacute;gicas das esp&eacute;cies invasoras, como tamb&eacute;m na vulnerabilidade dos ecossistemas &agrave;s invas&otilde;es.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Os termos relacionados com a ecologia da invas&atilde;o, assim como alguns da ecologia (Peters, 1991; Power <I>et al</I>., 1996), s&atilde;o criticados pela sua natureza amb&iacute;gua. Segundo Davis e Thompson (2000), a maioria dos termos empregados na ecologia da invas&atilde;o n&atilde;o est&atilde;o definidas, e se est&atilde;o, nem sempre s&atilde;o defini&ccedil;&otilde;es consistentes. Devido &agrave; ampla gama de termos, os problemas com a terminologia da invas&atilde;o refletem um dilema mais geral na ecologia: a falta de operacionalidade, com o abuso de termos inconsistentes e imprecisos (Peters, 1991).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">A ecologia da invas&atilde;o tem apresentado uma r&aacute;pida prolifera&ccedil;&atilde;o de termos para definir os processos, sendo que a maioria destes evocam freq&uuml;entemente conceitos antropoc&ecirc;ntricos como agress&atilde;o,<I><B> </B></I>assalto,<I><B> </B></I>ataque,<I><B> </B></I>usurpa&ccedil;&atilde;o,<I><B> </B></I>incurs&atilde;o,<I><B> </B></I>transgress&atilde;o,<I><B> </B></I>ataque severo e<I><B> </B></I>invas&atilde;o (Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000). Por exemplo, se aceita geralmente que os adjetivos como nocivo e<I><B> </B></I>praga<I><B> </B></I>impliquem em efeitos prejudiciais aos seres humanos. O uso destes termos pode n&atilde;o ser o mais indicado para descrever fen&ocirc;menos ecol&oacute;gicos, tendo em vista a j&aacute; mencionada origem antropoc&ecirc;ntrica assim como suas associa&ccedil;&otilde;es subconscientes com termos pr&eacute;-concebidos, que est&atilde;o abertos a interpreta&ccedil;&otilde;es divergentes e subjetivas de cada autor (Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004).</font></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Termos como n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena<I><B> </B></I> (Crawley, 1986; Fuller <I>et al., </I>1999; Mack <I>et al., </I>2000; MacIsaac <I>et al., </I>2001; Ross <I>et al., </I>2001; Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004), ex&oacute;tica<I><B> </B></I> (McNeely, 2001; Gido <I>et al., </I>2004), alien&iacute;gena (Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000; Richardson, 2001; Pyšek <I>et al., </I>2004), foram utilizados alternativamente para descrever o mesmo conceito. Pelo contr&aacute;rio, um mesmo termo &eacute; utilizado, para descrever diferentes processos ecol&oacute;gicos, como por exemplo: invasora (IUCN, 1999; Davis e Thompson, 2000; McNeely, 2001), naturalizada<I><B> </B></I> (Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000; Richardson, 2001; Pyšek <I>et al., </I>2004), importada<I><B> </B></I> (Williamson e Fitter, 1996a). O termo invasor tem sido empregado por diferentes autores para identificar uma determinada esp&eacute;cie em vez de descrever o fen&ocirc;meno ecol&oacute;gico associado &agrave; esta (Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000; Daehler, 2001). Este termo pode ter uma conota&ccedil;&atilde;o amb&iacute;gua, relacionando-se tanto aos impactos causados pela esp&eacute;cie como pela sua dispers&atilde;o e estabelecimento no novo ambiente. Esta falta de consenso faz com que este termo seja confuso e de dif&iacute;cil interpreta&ccedil;&atilde;o, da mesma forma, que invas&atilde;o.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Tamb&eacute;m o termo invas&atilde;o,<I><B> </B></I>em algumas disciplinas biol&oacute;gicas tem sido usualmente associado com algum efeito no ambiente, sobrepondo-se freq&uuml;entemente com o termo invasor (Rejm&aacute;nek <I>et al., </I>2002). Tentativas recentes em redefinir a invas&atilde;o e seus derivados somente t&ecirc;m refor&ccedil;ado a divis&atilde;o entre ecologistas da invas&atilde;o (Davis e Thompson, 2000; Richardson <I>et al., </I>2000; Daehler, 2001; Rejm&aacute;nek <I>et al., </I>2002).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000) destacam que o termo naturalizado &eacute; igualmente confuso, sendo empregado como sin&ocirc;nimo para os termos: alien&iacute;gena, invasora e estabelecida, ou especificamente para a ENI.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Este ac&uacute;mulo de termos conduz ao agrupamento de diversos fen&ocirc;menos diferentes e &agrave; separa&ccedil;&atilde;o de termos similares, o que torna dif&iacute;cil ou at&eacute; mesmo imposs&iacute;vel &agrave;s tentativas de padroniza&ccedil;&atilde;o da terminologia. Uma das causas dessa contradi&ccedil;&atilde;o &eacute; que os significados s&atilde;o baseados em interpreta&ccedil;&otilde;es filos&oacute;ficas e individuais, sendo inveross&iacute;mil que um &uacute;nico crit&eacute;rio seja desenvolvido abrangendo todas as situa&ccedil;&otilde;es (Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004). Estas interpreta&ccedil;&otilde;es divergentes tornam-se problem&aacute;ticas e confusas na hora da conceitualiza&ccedil;&atilde;o e utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o para a descri&ccedil;&atilde;o dos processos que se referem &agrave; invas&atilde;o biol&oacute;gica, produzindo no p&uacute;blico, consider&aacute;vel confus&atilde;o e emprego inadequado da terminologia (Peters, 1991; Simberloff, 2003; Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004). Como resultado, a atual terminologia, al&eacute;m de confusa e imprecisa, contribui pouco no desenvolvimento da compreens&atilde;o mais aprofundada da invas&atilde;o biol&oacute;gica (Shafland e Lewis, 1984; Richardson <I>et al</I>., 2000; Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004).</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">A falta de operacionalidade das defini&ccedil;&otilde;es &eacute; prejudicial para uma correta interpreta&ccedil;&atilde;o, pois um consenso sobre as mesmas serviria para evitar generaliza&ccedil;&otilde;es e predi&ccedil;&otilde;es equivocadas. Tal consenso reduziria a confus&atilde;o entre os pesquisadores e facilitaria a aproxima&ccedil;&atilde;o necess&aacute;ria para encontrar generaliza&ccedil;&otilde;es, melhorando a compreens&atilde;o dos processos associados &agrave;s invas&otilde;es biol&oacute;gicas.</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para reduzir a confus&atilde;o destes termos, Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000) entre outros, prop&otilde;em defini&ccedil;&otilde;es dos seguintes termos: invasora, estabelecida e naturalizada.</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Conceitos para Descrever os Processos de Invas&atilde;o Biol&oacute;gica</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Recentemente, Davis e Thompson (2000) propuseram crit&eacute;rios para denominar uma esp&eacute;cie de invasora. Estes autores concordam para que uma esp&eacute;cie seja reconhecida como invasora, ela deve ser nova na regi&atilde;o (crit&eacute;rio biogeogr&aacute;fico), e tamb&eacute;m causar um grande impacto. Esta defini&ccedil;&atilde;o apresenta uma conota&ccedil;&atilde;o conservacionista e tem conseguido renome em algumas organiza&ccedil;&otilde;es internacionais de conserva&ccedil;&atilde;o como a IUCN (1999). Entretanto Vermeij (1996), Rejm&aacute;nek (1999), Richardson <I>et al</I>. (2000), Richardson (2001), Kolar e Lodge (2001; 2002); Rejm&aacute;nek <I>et al</I>. (2002) e Pyšek <I>et al.</I> (2004), al&eacute;m do crit&eacute;rio biogeogr&aacute;fico, baseiam-se tamb&eacute;m no crit&eacute;rio de crescimento da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o e dispers&atilde;o, sem considerar explicitamente o crit&eacute;rio de impacto para definir uma esp&eacute;cie invasora. Estas defini&ccedil;&otilde;es capturam os processos ecol&oacute;gicos gerais que podem ser confirmados com simples medi&ccedil;&otilde;es da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o. Todos esses autores concordam em definir como esp&eacute;cie n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena (ENI) toda esp&eacute;cie que se dispersa do seu ponto de introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o, tornando-se abundante.<I><B> </B></I> Segundo Daehler (2001), a defini&ccedil;&atilde;o de Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000) &eacute; prefer&iacute;vel por n&atilde;o incluir crit&eacute;rios subjetivos, como acontece com a defini&ccedil;&atilde;o de Davis e Thompson (2000).</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Segundo Heger e Trepl (2003), as defini&ccedil;&otilde;es dependem do contexto da investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o. Para estes autores, as defini&ccedil;&otilde;es propostas por Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000), s&atilde;o inadequadas para os estudos estritamente ecol&oacute;gicos centrados no organismo. Segundo estes, uma defini&ccedil;&atilde;o deve ter justificativa ecol&oacute;gica para distinguir entre as invas&otilde;es biol&oacute;gicas e os fen&ocirc;menos ecol&oacute;gicos similares tais como nomadismo ou a dispers&atilde;o cont&iacute;nua de esp&eacute;cies. Em se tratando de plantas invasoras, Heger e Trepl (2003) defendem a seguinte defini&ccedil;&atilde;o: uma planta invasora &eacute; qualquer esp&eacute;cie que ocorre em uma localidade fora de sua &aacute;rea de origem; a ocorr&ecirc;ncia da esp&eacute;cie pode ter sido prevenida no passado por uma barreira, evitando sua dispers&atilde;o, e n&atilde;o pelas condi&ccedil;&otilde;es no novo habitat. A defini&ccedil;&atilde;o utiliza o termo <I>qualquer esp&eacute;cie</I> para acentuar que n&atilde;o importa se no passado a barreira geogr&aacute;fica p&ocirc;de ou n&atilde;o ter sido transposta com interven&ccedil;&atilde;o do homem.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">A defini&ccedil;&atilde;o de Vermeij (1996) para esp&eacute;cie estabelecida implica que a nova popula&ccedil;&atilde;o pode se auto-sustentar.<B> </B>Isto consiste em vencer a resist&ecirc;ncia ecol&oacute;gica, ou seja, a intera&ccedil;&atilde;o entre a resist&ecirc;ncia ambiental bi&oacute;tica e demogr&aacute;fica. Esta defini&ccedil;&atilde;o &eacute; similar &agrave;s de Williamson e Fitter (1996a, b) e Pyšek <I>et al. </I>(2004) que igualmente empregam os termos naturalizado e estabelecido como sin&ocirc;nimos, j&aacute; que ambos os termos referem-se aos organismos que estabeleceram popula&ccedil;&otilde;es auto-sustent&aacute;veis. Mas, e concordando com Falk-Petersen<I> et al.</I> (2006), &eacute; prefer&iacute;vel usar o termo estabelecido, pois o termo e naturalizada assim como ex&oacute;tico tem uma conota&ccedil;&atilde;o subjetiva e antropoc&ecirc;ntrica.</font></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Segundo Rejm&aacute;nek (1999) a invas&atilde;o ecol&oacute;gica ocorre quando<B> </B>em<B> </B>um ambiente s&atilde;o introduzidas ENI<I><B> </B></I>(potencialmente invasoras) que conseguem vencer a resist&ecirc;ncia ecol&oacute;gica, estabelecer-se, podendo proliferar e se dispersar mantendo uma popula&ccedil;&atilde;o vi&aacute;vel ao longo do tempo. Uma vez que a ENI est&aacute; estabelecida, &eacute; chamada de esp&eacute;cie invasora. A velocidade com que uma esp&eacute;cie invasora se dispersa depende dos atributos individuais e populacionais. Segundo Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000) o intervalo entre a expans&atilde;o e o crescimento da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o, para uma planta invasora, segue tipicamente o padr&atilde;o mostrado na <a href="#fig2">Figura 2</a>, isto &eacute;, existe freq&uuml;entemente uma fase lenta entre a chegada do organismo no novo habitat e a invas&atilde;o.</font></P>      <P align="center"><a name="fig2"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/inci/v32n9/art04fig2.jpg" width="373" height="229"></a></P>      
<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Algumas esp&eacute;cies n&atilde;o se estabelecem, isto &eacute;, falham na invas&atilde;o, e sua popula&ccedil;&atilde;o pode extinguir-se, ou n&atilde;o, ou ainda permanecer latente (esp&eacute;cies n&atilde;o invasoras), at&eacute; que ocorra alguma mudan&ccedil;a favor&aacute;vel no clima ou por repetidas introdu&ccedil;&otilde;es, tornandose abundantes (a maioria das invas&otilde;es bem sucedidas ocorre desta forma). Como resultado, a esp&eacute;cie invasora modifica caracter&iacute;sticas na nova comunidade, geralmente associada &agrave; exclus&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cies nativas, tanto por competi&ccedil;&atilde;o como por preda&ccedil;&atilde;o. Este processo traz como conseq&uuml;&ecirc;ncia o fen&ocirc;meno chamado homogeneiza&ccedil;&atilde;o bi&oacute;tica, que se refere ao incremento da similaridade entre as biotas causando a substitui&ccedil;&atilde;o de esp&eacute;cies nativas por n&atilde;o nativas (Mack <I>et al</I>., 2000). A homogeneiza&ccedil;&atilde;o bi&oacute;tica resulta em diminui&ccedil;&atilde;o da diversidade das comunidades causada por fatores como extirpa&ccedil;&atilde;o, hibrida&ccedil;&atilde;o, tanto intra como interespec&iacute;fica (Rahel, 2000; Simberloff, 2003), modifica&ccedil;&atilde;o do habitat e de intera&ccedil;&otilde;es ecol&oacute;gicas que n&atilde;o ocorreriam naturalmente com a mesma velocidade (Rahel, 2000; Latini e Petrere, 2004). Exemplificando para peixes neotropicais, a introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o de pisc&iacute;voros tais como <I>Cichla monoculus</I>, <I>Astronotus ocellatus</I> e <I>Pygocentrus nattereri</I> em lagos da bacia do rio Doce, Brasil, reduziu a riqueza e diversidade da ictiofauna nativa (Latini e Petrere Jr., 2004). Tanto este trabalho, assim como o de Zaret e Paine (1973), mostram que a introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o de <I>Cichla</I> cf. <I>monoculus</I> tem conseq&uuml;&ecirc;ncias negativas sobre a estrutura da comunidade, e causam homogeneiza&ccedil;&atilde;o bi&oacute;tica. As esp&eacute;cies deste g&ecirc;nero s&atilde;o consideradas invasoras e atualmente ocupam quase todas as bacias hidrogr&aacute;ficas brasileiras.</font></P> <B>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Modelos</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Colautti e MacIsaac (2004) desenvolveram um modelo baseado em Carlton (1985); Williamson e Fitter (1996<SUP> </SUP>a); Richardson <I>et al. </I>(2000) e Kolar e Lodge (2001). Todos estes modelos baseiam-se no conceito de press&atilde;o do prop&aacute;gulo, centrado no n&uacute;mero de prop&aacute;gulos invasores e na freq&uuml;&ecirc;ncia com a qual os mesmos s&atilde;o introduzidos (Williamson e Fitter, 1996a, b). Sob este paradigma, os invasores potenciais passam atrav&eacute;s de uma s&eacute;rie de filtros que podem impossibilitar a transi&ccedil;&atilde;o das etapas subseq&uuml;entes. Os prop&aacute;gulos invasores come&ccedil;am como residentes em uma regi&atilde;o doadora (etapa 0), alguns dos quais s&atilde;o transportados como vetores (etapa I), geralmente por seres humanos. Se estes prop&aacute;gulos sobrevivem ao transporte e chegam a introduzir-se (etapa II), ent&atilde;o tem o potencial para estabelecerse (etapa III) no novo ambiente (Colautti e MacIsaac, 2004). Neste modelo, a separa&ccedil;&atilde;o da press&atilde;o do prop&aacute;gulo e de outros fatores (intera&ccedil;&atilde;o da esp&eacute;cie, disponibilidade de recurso), implica em quatro categorias de esp&eacute;cies estabelecidas, baseadas em dois filtros: dispers&atilde;o local e conveni&ecirc;ncia do ambiente e da comunidade. A dispers&atilde;o local ou regional dos indiv&iacute;duos (isto &eacute;, a press&atilde;o do prop&aacute;gulo) determina que as esp&eacute;cies da etapa III alcancem a etapa IVa (amplamente dispersa), e que esp&eacute;cies da etapa IVb (dominante) alcancem a etapa V (amplamente dispersa e dominante). Os fatores ambientais e das comunidades relacionadas implicam que as esp&eacute;cies da etapa III alcancem a etapa IVb (dominante) ou que esp&eacute;cies da etapa IVa alcancem a etapa V. Sob estes crit&eacute;rios, uma esp&eacute;cie ENI pode ser localizada e numericamente rara (etapa III), dispersa, mas rara (etapa IVa), localizada mas dominante (etapa IVb) ou amplamente dispersa e dominante (etapa V).</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Atributos de Invasores Bem Sucedidos</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Invas&otilde;es de esp&eacute;cies oferecem aos ec&oacute;logos e evolucionistas um paradoxo interessante. Como podem estes organismos adaptar-se ao novo ambiente, estabelecer-se e, &agrave;s vezes, deslocar esp&eacute;cies nativas? Ao se deparar com esses questionamentos, muitos autores consideram tanto as caracter&iacute;sticas das esp&eacute;cies invasoras que as tornam bem sucedidas, como as caracter&iacute;sticas dos ambientes invadidos, suscet&iacute;veis ao estabelecimento. Atualmente, o principal objetivo no estudo das invas&otilde;es biol&oacute;gicas tem sido entender porque alguns organismos tornam-se invasores not&oacute;rios, em detrimento de outros (Rejm&aacute;nek e Richardson, 1996; Rejm&aacute;nek, 1999; Kolar e Lodge, 2001).</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para Moyle e Ellssworth (2004), qualquer esp&eacute;cie pode ser introduzida e, portanto, todo ecossistema pode ser invadido com sucesso. Segundo Rejm&aacute;nek (1999), para descobrir quais caracter&iacute;sticas ou combina&ccedil;&otilde;es s&atilde;o respons&aacute;veis pela invasibilidade, primeiramente &eacute; necess&aacute;ria a distin&ccedil;&atilde;o entre as esp&eacute;cies nativas e as invasoras. Por&eacute;m, &eacute; sumamente importante que fiquem claros os conceitos empregados nesta &aacute;rea de estudo. Geralmente, &eacute; mais f&aacute;cil obter uma lista das esp&eacute;cies invasoras do que daquelas que n&atilde;o o s&atilde;o. Isto se deve ao fato de se conhecer mais acerca de esp&eacute;cies que tiveram &ecirc;xito na invas&atilde;o, al&eacute;m de, ser muitas vezes dif&iacute;cil a distin&ccedil;&atilde;o entre uma ENI e uma esp&eacute;cie nativa.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para ajudar a entender quais habilidades s&atilde;o importantes para que as ENI tornem-se invasoras, alguns estudos t&ecirc;m focalizado as caracter&iacute;sticas da hist&oacute;ria de vida da esp&eacute;cie como, por exemplo, a predisposi&ccedil;&atilde;o a um r&aacute;pido crescimento populacional, fecundidade (Wootton, 1998) e sua integra&ccedil;&atilde;o com a comunidade (Kolar e Lodge, 2000). Outros t&ecirc;m investigado como as caracter&iacute;sticas gen&eacute;ticas podem promover grande plasticidade fenot&iacute;pica ou potencial para uma r&aacute;pida altera&ccedil;&atilde;o evolutiva (Sakai <I>et al</I>., 2001). Caracter&iacute;sticas como <I>r</I>-estrategista (uso pioneiro do habitat, curto tempo de gera&ccedil;&atilde;o, altas taxas de crescimento e corpo pequeno), a capacidade de altern&acirc;ncia entre as estrat&eacute;gias <I>r </I>e <I>K, </I>e flexibilidade ecol&oacute;gica, s&atilde;o importantes determinantes para o &ecirc;xito da invas&atilde;o. Em novas situa&ccedil;&otilde;es, os indiv&iacute;duos podem ajustar-se fisiol&oacute;gica ou morfologicamente, mesmo durante a fase do estabelecimento, determinando assim seu &ecirc;xito como invasor (Baker, 1965; Vermeij, 1996; Rosecchi <I>et al., </I>2001). O estudo de B&Oslash;hn <I>et al. </I>(2004) ilustra que durante uma invas&atilde;o, uma popula&ccedil;&atilde;o pioneira em um novo ambiente impulsiona o desenvolvimento para um novo padr&atilde;o de hist&oacute;ria de vida, proporcionado pelas condi&ccedil;&otilde;es e o potencial de mudan&ccedil;as evolutivas. Ent&atilde;o, as esp&eacute;cies que apresentassem v&aacute;rias destas caracter&iacute;sticas teriam maior probabilidade de serem altamente invasoras em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave;quelas que apresentavam apenas algumas delas. Entretanto, suas suposi&ccedil;&otilde;es ainda carecem de comprova&ccedil;&atilde;o, pois existem poucos dados emp&iacute;ricos para refutar ou sustentar essas hip&oacute;teses (Kolar e Lodge, 2001).</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Segundo Ehrlich (1989), a maioria dos vertebrados invasores bem sucedidos apresenta associa&ccedil;&atilde;o estreita com os seres humanos. Exemplos de esp&eacute;cies bem sucedidas na invas&atilde;o biol&oacute;gica &eacute; <I>Rattus norvegicus, </I>a qual &eacute; uma competidora superior com elevada abund&acirc;ncia em sua &aacute;rea nativa, pequeno tamanho, amplo nicho tr&oacute;fico e curto tempo de gera&ccedil;&atilde;o, em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave;s esp&eacute;cies nativas (Moyle e Ellssworth, 2004). Adicionalmente, organismos bem sucedidos apresentam grande variabilidade gen&eacute;tica, h&aacute;bito greg&aacute;rio, capacidade de altern&acirc;ncia entre as estrat&eacute;gias <I>r</I> e <I>K</I> (peixes), vagilidade, capacidade das f&ecirc;meas de armazenar esperma e habilidade de sobreviver em um amplo espectro de condi&ccedil;&otilde;es f&iacute;sicas e ecol&oacute;gicas (Blatz e Moyle, 1993; Crawley, 1986; Moyle e Light, 1996; Rejm&aacute;nek e Richardson, 1996; Kolar e Lodge, 2002). Esp&eacute;cies com estrat&eacute;gias reprodutivas m&uacute;ltiplas (reprodu&ccedil;&atilde;o vegetativa, por sementes e autofecunda&ccedil;&atilde;o), comuns em plantas, s&atilde;o consideradas colonizadoras bem sucedidas (Baker, 1965). A experi&ecirc;ncia de Blatz e Moyle (1993) e Moyle e Light (1996) nos rios da Calif&oacute;rnia, sugerem que, se os fatores abi&oacute;ticos s&atilde;o apropriados para as ENI provavelmente &agrave; invas&atilde;o ter&aacute; &ecirc;xito, sem importar a composi&ccedil;&atilde;o da biota local. Geralmente, as falhas s&atilde;o atribu&iacute;das mais &agrave; inabilidade de aclimata&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave;s condi&ccedil;&otilde;es abi&oacute;ticas do que a resist&ecirc;ncia bi&oacute;tica da comunidade receptora.</font></P>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Al&eacute;m das caracter&iacute;sticas acima mencionadas, a literatura tem reportado um aumento no crescimento e condi&ccedil;&atilde;o dos indiv&iacute;duos ap&oacute;s a introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o (Baker, 1965; Blossey, 1993). Este padr&atilde;o &eacute; atribu&iacute;do &agrave; aus&ecirc;ncia de inimigos naturais (competidores, predadores e pat&oacute;genos) presentes na nova &aacute;rea (Crawley, 1986; Wolfe, 2002). A hip&oacute;tese do escape do inimigo natural postula que a regula&ccedil;&atilde;o da redu&ccedil;&atilde;o por inimigos naturais resulta no incremento da abund&acirc;ncia e distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o seguida da introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o. Esta hip&oacute;tese avalia o papel das intera&ccedil;&otilde;es espec&iacute;ficas. O estudo de Wolfe (2002) fornece fortes argumentos em favor desta hip&oacute;tese. Sem d&uacute;vida, &eacute; poss&iacute;vel que outros fatores tenham um papel mais dominante em uma invas&atilde;o bem sucedida (Sakai <I>et al., </I>2001).</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Caracter&iacute;sticas dos Ambientes Invadidos</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Quando os ec&oacute;logos se perguntam se uma regi&atilde;o &eacute; mais suscet&iacute;vel &agrave; invas&atilde;o que outra, est&aacute; claro que temos que perguntar se a regi&atilde;o &eacute; intrinsecamente mais suscet&iacute;vel &agrave; invas&atilde;o e n&atilde;o somente se existem mais esp&eacute;cies n&atilde;o ind&iacute;genas (ENI) na regi&atilde;o. A invasibilidade de uma regi&atilde;o consiste em saber quais de suas propriedades intr&iacute;nsecas podem afetar ou n&atilde;o o estabelecimento e principalmente a sobreviv&ecirc;ncia da ENI (Lonsdale, 1999).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Como os sistemas ecol&oacute;gicos s&atilde;o muito complexos, &eacute; extremamente dif&iacute;cil predizer onde as esp&eacute;cies introduzidas ser&atilde;o bem sucedidas. Geralmente as principais caracter&iacute;sticas dos ambientes invadidos incluem: isolamento geogr&aacute;fico e hist&oacute;rico, baixa diversidade de esp&eacute;cies nativas, altos n&iacute;veis de dist&uacute;rbio por atividades antr&oacute;picas, aus&ecirc;ncia de inimigos co-adaptados, incluindo competidores, predadores, parasitas e doen&ccedil;as (Elton, 1958; Blatz e Moyle, 1993; Wolfe, 2002; B&Oslash;hn <I>et al., </I>2004).</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Charles Elton em seu livro <I>Invas&otilde;es de plantas e animais</I> (1958), concluiu que os invasores s&atilde;o mais prov&aacute;veis de se estabelecer nas &aacute;reas que foram alteradas por seres humanos e nas &aacute;reas com comunidades relativamente simples, como ilhas (Moyle e Ellssworth, 2004). Atualmente, est&aacute; bem documentado que os habitats antropicamente alterados s&atilde;o mais rapidamente invadidos em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o aos &iacute;ntegros, principalmente em fun&ccedil;&atilde;o da altera&ccedil;&atilde;o ambiental para as esp&eacute;cies nativas (Elton, 1958; Lodge, 1993; B&Oslash;hn <I>et al., </I>2004). Este fator explica provavelmente os n&uacute;meros mais altos de esp&eacute;cies introduzidas nas &aacute;reas densamente povoadas (Moyle e Light, 1996). Por exemplo, os peixes introduzidos na Calif&oacute;rnia podem rapidamente estabelecer-se nos reservat&oacute;rios novos que se formam depois que as represas s&atilde;o constru&iacute;das, mas freq&uuml;entemente demoram a invadir os rios acima dos reservat&oacute;rios, enquanto os rios permanecem dominados pelos peixes nativos, incapazes de sobreviver no reservat&oacute;rio (Moyle e Light, 1996; Moyle, 1999). Tais rios apresentam uma elevada resist&ecirc;ncia ambiental &agrave; invas&atilde;o.</font> </P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">As comunidades simples s&atilde;o invadidas facilmente porque existem poucas esp&eacute;cies nestas &aacute;reas (ilhas e dunas do deserto) que evolu&iacute;ram na aus&ecirc;ncia de outras esp&eacute;cies, n&atilde;o possuindo as adapta&ccedil;&otilde;es necess&aacute;rias para escapar da competi&ccedil;&atilde;o ou preda&ccedil;&atilde;o das esp&eacute;cies invasoras (Moyle e Ellssworth, 2004).</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Considera&ccedil;&otilde;es Finais</font></P> </B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Embora a sociedade acredite que as introdu&ccedil;&otilde;es da maioria das ENI sejam ben&eacute;ficas, estas a&ccedil;&otilde;es s&atilde;o coletivamente prejudiciais para toda a sociedade, tanto econ&ocirc;mica como ecologicamente. O uso de um conceito entend&iacute;vel de esp&eacute;cie introduzida e de esp&eacute;cie invasora assim como de seus derivados &eacute; crucial quando se trata de unir os paradigmas do processo da invas&atilde;o. Portanto, &eacute; necess&aacute;rio padronizar estes conceitos de forma a diminuir as interpreta&ccedil;&otilde;es divergentes para os fen&ocirc;menos associados &agrave;s invas&otilde;es biol&oacute;gicas. O modelo apresentado por Colautti e MacIsaac (2004) &eacute; um claro exemplo de que &eacute; preciso utilizar os mesmos conceitos de forma a diminuir a falta de operacionalidade e assim compreender melhor a din&acirc;mica das esp&eacute;cies invasoras.</font></P>     <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Evidentemente, al&eacute;m de saber quais s&atilde;o as ENI potencialmente invasoras e sua biologia, o estudo do processo da invas&atilde;o ainda exige uma compreens&atilde;o mais cuidadosa dos fatores que regulam este processo, ou seja: a chegada, o estabelecimento e a dispers&atilde;o. Concordando com (Puth e Post, 2005), a disparidade conhecida entre os ec&oacute;logos demonstra que existe a necessidade de ampliar esfor&ccedil;os e incluir maiores investiga&ccedil;&otilde;es sobre o processo de chegada, pois o transporte de potenciais invasores &eacute; pass&iacute;vel de controle pelos &oacute;rg&atilde;os fiscalizadores. A necessidade de elaborar legisla&ccedil;&otilde;es que forne&ccedil;am conceitos claros e de aplica&ccedil;&atilde;o direta s&atilde;o extremamente desej&aacute;veis para evitar, ou pelo menos minimizar a introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o e posterior invas&atilde;o biol&oacute;gica. A Portaria do Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renov&aacute;veis (IBAMA) Nº 145-N, de 29 de outubro de 1998, apresenta diversos termos para denominar esp&eacute;cies introduzidas, o que levou &agrave; confus&otilde;es t&eacute;cnicas na elabora&ccedil;&atilde;o de seus artigos. Para esclarecer e melhorar esta portaria recomendamos a utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o do termo esp&eacute;cie n&atilde;o ind&iacute;gena, n&atilde;o importando se a esp&eacute;cie &eacute; proveniente de outro ou do pr&oacute;prio pa&iacute;s.</font></P>  <B>    <P align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Agradecimentos</font></P> </B>    ]]></body>
