En ellos se busca observar cómo el poeta logra producir un concepto de identidad del yo caribeño en relación con los otros. Para lograrlo se recurre a la deconstrucción de los textos, según los planteamientos de Jonathan Culler (2000) y Bárbara Johnson (1980), y a una dialéctica de conciliación. El diálogo entre las oposiciones binarias presentes en los poemas revela al final un punto intermedio en el cual el yo y los otros se vuelven un nosotros. Los textos seleccionados ya son, en sí mismos, una aplicación de deconstrucción que hace Walcott a su propia identidad. Finalmente, las conclusiones incluyen una breve comparación entre el sujeto caribeño conciliador propuesto por Walcott en sus poemas y las imágenes del colonizador blanco y las del esclavo negro presentes en la obra de Saint-John Perse y Aimé Césaire, respectivamente, con el fin de reinscribir a los tres sujetos en el devenir histórico del nosotros caribeño.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This paper is an analysis of “Ruins of a Great House” and “Verandah”, two poems written by Caribbean poet Derek Walcott. Its aim is to observe how the poet manages to produce a concept of identity of the Caribbean I in contrast to the others. To achieve this, the texts will be deconstructed, following Jonathan Culler (2000) and Barbara Johnson (1980), and then a dialectic of conciliation will follow. The dialogue between the binary oppositions present in the poems eventually reveals a middle point at which the I and the others become a we. The texts chosen for the analysis are themselves a deconstruction exercise applied by Walcott to his own identity. Finally, in order to reinscribe all three persons in the historical becoming of the Caribbean we, the conclusion includes a brief comparison between the reconciling Caribbean person proposed by Walcott in his poems and the images of both the white colonizer and the black slave present in poems by Saint-John Perse and Aimé Césaire, respectively.]]></p></abstract>

Para isso, ele recorre à desconstrução dos textos, segundo os enfoques de Jonathan Culler (2000) e de Barbara Johnson (1980) e a uma dialética de conciliação. O contraste entre as oposições binárias existentes nos poemas evidencia, no final, um ponto médio onde o eu e os outros se tornam um nós. Os textos selecionados são per se uma aplicação de desconstrução que faz Walcott a sua própria identidade. <body><![CDATA[<p align="right"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Aimé Césaire, </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">Cahier d’un retour au pays natal</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">¿Quiénes y cuáles somos?, pregunta retórica que Césaire se formula en torno a la identidad del sujeto caribeño. Su respuesta es una metáfora que construye en torno a una metamorfosis al mejor estilo ovidiano: el sujeto caribeño se convierte en un árbol que ha echado raíces profundas en estas tierras y que a fuerza de explotación, esclavitud y miseria ayudó a forjar ciudades que se alzan sobre los huesos de sus antepasados. Son palabras muy duras que vienen del corazón de un hombre que quiso rescatar su identidad cultural africana, esa que parecía haber sido sepultada durante la construcción de las diferentes naciones antillanas, conjuntamente con las osamentas de los primeros esclavos africanos que llegaron a trabajar en las plantaciones. Según Lulú Giménez, la idea de la  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">négritude </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">sugerida por Césaire —junto a otros movimientos que pretendían rescatar la identidad africana— implicaba “una revaloración de los componentes culturales defendidos por los esclavos y sus descendientes, bien en la clandestinidad, o camuflados entre las formas culturales impuestas por los colonizadores” (1991: 144).</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">El discurso de Césaire es tan punzante como necesario en la búsqueda de una identidad caribeña que es muy escurridiza y que tanto teóricos como poetas intentan delinear en sus escritos y composiciones. Entre ellos encontramos a Derek Walcott, el gran poeta caribeño renovador de la lengua inglesa contemporánea, quien, siguiendo los pasos de SaintJohn Perse y de Aimé Césaire, logra establecer un diálogo entre el verso más conservador del poeta de Guadalupe y el más dramático del poeta martiniquense. La dialéctica de Walcott finalmente evoluciona hacia unos versos catárticos y conciliadores que, si bien reconocen las complicaciones de tiempo y espacio vividas por los poetas que lo antecedieron, al mismo tiempo se alimentan del devenir histórico y de todos los elementos culturales disponibles a partir de ese entonces para  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">construir </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">una nueva identidad caribeña.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">En tal sentido, en el presente estudio se analizan dos poemas deWalcott:“Ruins of a Great House” y “Verandah”</font><Sup><font size="2">2</font></Sup><font size="2">.En ellos se busca observar justamente cómo logra el poeta producir su concepto de identidad del yo caribeño y cómo se ve a sí mismo en relación con  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">los otros</font></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">, que son </font> </SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">distintos</font></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">. Cabe preguntarse también: ¿cómo dialoga el </font> </SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">yo lírico </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">con </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">el otro </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">o </font> </SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">los otros </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">personajes presentes en los dos poemas?, ¿desde qué perspectiva? Es probable que el poeta haya enfrentado este dilema con la misma pregunta que se hace Césaire, presentada en el epígrafe, solo que adaptándola a su realidad, su espacio y su tiempo. En tal sentido, en este trabajo se abordan dichas interrogantes a través de una  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">dialéctica de conciliación</font></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">, tal y como se plantea en el título. Si bien no es evidente en forma categórica o estructural, el análisis incluye la deconstrucción de algunas oposiciones binarias en los poemas, entre ellas las de europeo/africano, blanco/negro, amo/esclavo. Esta herramienta de análisis permite llegar finalmente al  </font> </SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">yo caribeño </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">que el poeta construye en su obra.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Un enfoque deconstructivo deja abierta la posibilidad de que una definición sea replanteada constantemente. Al respecto, Jonathan Culler señala que:</font></SPAN ></p>     <blockquote> 	    <p align="justify"> 	<SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Deconstruction is most simply defined as a critique of the hierarchical oppositions that have structured Western thought: inside/outside, mind/body, literal/metaphorical, speech/writing, presence/absence, nature/culture, form/meaning.To deconstruct an opposition is to show that it is not natural and inevitable but a construction, produced by discourses that rely on it, and to show that it is a construction in a work of deconstruction that seeks to dismantle it and reinscribe it —that is, not destroy it but give it a different structure and functioning</font></SPAN ><SPAN style=" font-weight:normal; font-family:CROQG D+ Gill Sans,Gill Sans,serif; font-style:normal" ><Sup><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">3 </font></SPAN ></Sup></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">(2000: 126).</font></SPAN ></p> </blockquote>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Por su parte, Barbara Johnson (1980) añade que, como modelo de lectura, la deconstrucción implica desmontar fuerzas que están en conflicto dentro de un texto, es decir, es una investigación sobre la tensión entre distintos modos de significación o dimensiones del lenguaje.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">La disparidad entre categorías de oposiciones binarias se basa en una represión de diferencias menos contundentes que se encuentran dentro de las entidades estudiadas. Por ejemplo, el europeo y el africano —como sujetos históricos de la época de las colonias— tienen en común el hecho de que llegaron a América a través del (tristemente) famoso Triángulo del Atlántico</font><Sup><font size="2">4</font></Sup><font size="2">. Esto significa que ambos son extranjeros en el Caribe, ninguno es nativo de las islas. Los nativos de las islas (arahuacos, taínos y caribes), que no tenían lugar dentro de la oposición binaria construida en suelo antillano a partir de la última década del siglo XV, serían exterminados y reemplazados por estos nuevos pobladores foráneos.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Otro factor que tienen en común las categorías citadas (europeo/africano, blanco/negro, amo/esclavo) —las cuales aparentemente se oponen en forma radical— es el hecho de que ambos sujetos en la oposición tuvieron que asumir roles para los que no habían sido preparados. Por un lado podía darse el caso de un campesino o un artesano europeo que de repente, al llegara las islas del Caribe, se convertía en colono, jefe de plantación y amo de esclavos. Por el otro, se observaba la llegada de africanos (principalmente occidentales) que provenían de distintas tribus (algunas eran enemigas en su país natal), hablaban distintos idiomas e incluían a veces jefes de tribu y miembros de la nobleza africana. De la noche a la mañana estos últimos fueron reducidos simple y llanamente a la condición de esclavos de plantación.</font></SPAN ></p>     ]]></body>

He allí el juego de otredad en el que Walcott tiene mucho éxito. En este caso la casa grande sigue en pie, pero sus antiguos propietarios son solo almas en pena  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">que deambulan </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">por la veranda sin descanso eterno. Igualmente, cuando el sujeto lírico tiende la mano a sus amigos fantasmas de la época de las colonias y las plantaciones, está confirmando la creencia de que el lugar de sus ancestros o antepasados es el “hogar verdadero”.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Walcott explora de este modo la mezcla de razas producto de la violencia y el abuso, un tema engorroso de la sociedad y la historia caribeña, pero lo hace a través de personajes cotidianos, sin nombres rimbombantes ni contextos extraordinarios: la épica que Walcott nos regala en este poema lleno de pasión y resentimiento, pero también de amor y perdón, no puede ocurrir en otro lado sino en el Caribe, pero al mismo tiempo tiene ecos en la historia y la literatura universal.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="color:#272526; font-family:Verdana; font-style:normal; font-weight:bold" ><font size="2">3. EL DEVENIR DEL </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; color:#272526; font-weight:bold" ><font size="2">NOSOTROS </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="color:#272526; font-family:Verdana; font-style:normal; font-weight:bold" ><font size="2">CARIBEÑO: CONCLUSIONES</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Los dos poemas de Walcott analizados revelan cómo el poeta logra salirse de la visión dicotómica que predominaba en los trabajos de poetas como Saint John Perse y Aimé Césaire. Esto se debe al ejercicio de deconstrucción que Walcott lleva a cabo en sus poemas, el cual le permite decirle al sujeto caribeño (pero también al resto del mundo) que hay que dejar de pensar en el  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">yo </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">como un individuo opuesto al </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">otro</font></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">, pues esto solo lleva a un callejón sin salida. Los poemas plantean la necesidad de ir más allá del resentimiento hacia el otro, ofreciendo como alternativa no solo la esperada compasión hacia el esclavo, sino también una sorpresiva compasión hacia el amo.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Atrás queda el Caribe en blanco y negro planteado por los poetas que antecedieron a Walcott. Esto no significa que haya alcanzado una especie de utopía donde ambas razas puedan vivir sin complicaciones. Lo que hace el poeta es presentarnos las contradicciones de la vida y plantear la búsqueda conjunta de salidas en el  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">devenir </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">de la historia, no estancados en el pasado sino mirando hacia el futuro. Así, el poeta anglohablante puede incorporar a su estilo imágenes y símbolos, temas y reflexiones de los poetas que lo antecedieron, pero modificando los presupuestos desde donde parten: Perse presenta el mito del amo y dueño de hacienda que cree que la esclavitud nunca va a pasar; Césaire inventa el mito de la negrería que entra de pie en un barco de regreso al país natal.
