<self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100302&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100302&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100302&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se ha descrito que el virus SARS-CoV-2 tiene predilección por el receptor ECA II (Enzima Convertidora de Angiotensina II) presente en neumocitos, enterocitos y en las células trofoblásticas de la placenta. Estudiamos seis casos de placentas de gestantes PCR positivas para SARS-CoV-2. Cinco, con, antecedentes patológicos importantes se infectaron en el tercer trimestre. El peso placentario fue menor de 750 gramos en cuatro. Los hallazgos morfológicos fueron inespecíficos: envejecimiento placentario, hemorragia intervellosa, corioamnionitis aguda. No observamos trombos. ACE II fue positivo en la decidua y en el endotelio en cinco de los seis casos. Las células del trofoblasto resultaron negativas. Dos casos tuvieron malformaciones congénitas, dos casos fueron dados de alta luego de observación, un caso presentó hipoxia neonatal atribuido a insuficiencia placentaria (la madre presentó preeclampsia) y un caso fue muerte fetal intrauterina (la madre se infectó en el segundo trimestre, la placenta presentó villitis crónica inespecífica y las membranas mostraron corioamnionitis aguda). Consideramos que estos hallazgos sugieren la presencia del virus en los tejidos maternos y no en las vellosidades coriales. Sin embargo la perfusión placentaria si se comprometió en estos casos estudiados. Estudios posteriores de las placentas nos permitirán conocer la fisiopatología de ésta enfermedad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract SARS-CoV-2 virus has a predilection for the ACE II receptor (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme II) present in pneumocytes, enterocytes and trophoblastic cells of the placenta. We studied six cases of placentas of pregnant women positive for PCR for SARS-CoV-2. Five cases had significant pathological histories and were infected in the third trimester of pregnancy. Placental weight was below 750 grams in four placentas. Morphologic changes were unspecific: placental aging, intervillous hemorrhage, and acute coriamnionitis. We did not observe thrombi. Immunoreactivity for ACE II was positive in decidual cells and endothelial cells in five of the six cases. We did not observe positivity for ACE II in trophoblast cells. Two cases had congenital malformations, two cases were discharged after observation, one case presented neonatal hypoxia attributed to placental insufficiency (the mother presented preeclampsia) and one case was intrauterine fetal death (the mother was infected in the second trimester, the placenta presented chronic nonspecific villitis and the membranes showed acute chorioamnionitis). We consider that these findings suggest the presence of the virus in maternal tissues and not in chorionic villi. However, placental perfusion was compromised in these cases. Subsequent studies of the placentas of pregnant women will allow us to better understand the pathogenesis of this disease.]]></p></abstract>
