Objetivo: Demostrar la relación entre la carga ácida de la dieta y la velocidad de crecimiento en niños de 6 meses - 11 años.  Métodos: Se calcularon peso y talla/longitud para la edad y velocidad de crecimiento (VC) de peso y talla/longitud. Se estimó la Carga Ácida Potencial Renal (CAPR) mediante un cuestionario de frecuencia de consumo utilizando el método de Remer y Manz. Estos parámetros fueron evaluados en 58 pacientes en una primera consulta cuando se impartieron recomendaciones con fines de disminuir la carga ácida de la dieta y luego en una consulta de control 3 a 18 meses después.  Resultados: La CAPR disminuyó significativamente entre las dos consultas (p&lt;0,0001), no así el contenido energético de la dieta ni el peso o talla/longitud para la edad. Quince de 21 pacientes mejoraron su VC o la mantuvieron normal, mientras que 6 la disminuyeron. La correlación entre la CAPR y las VC fue negativa en todos los casos.  Conclusión: La CAPR de la dieta disminuyó significativamente con la intervención nutricional. La VC mejoró o se normalizó en 15 de 21 pacientes, a pesar de que hubo un descenso en la media para VC (cm/año) en la muestra total y en el grupo de las niñas. La correlación entre la CAPR y las VC fue negativa, aunque sólo significativa para la VP en las niñas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract When acid precursor foods predominate over alkaline foods, dietary acid load increases with unfavorable consequences for growth in children.  Objective: To demonstrate the relationship between dietary acid load and growth velocity in children from 6 months to 11 years of age.  Methods: Weight and height/length for age and growth velocity (GV) of weight and height/length were calculated. Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) was estimated by means of a consumption frequency questionnaire and the method by Remer and Manz. These parameters were evaluated in 58 patients in a first consultation when recommendations were given to reduce dietary acid load. A second evaluation was performed in a second consultation 3 to 18 months later.  Results: PRAL decreased significantly between the two consultations (p&lt;0.0001), which was not the case for the energy content of the diet. Fifteen of 21 patients improved or normalized their GV, while it decreased in 6 of them. The correlation between PRAL and GV was negative in all cases.  Conclusion: Dietary PRAL decreased significantly with the nutritional intervention. GV improved or normalized in 15 of 21 patients, despite the fact that there was a decrease in the mean for GV (cm/year) for the total sample and for the girls. The correlation between CAPR and VC was negative, although only significant for GV for weight in girls.]]></p></abstract>
