En el actual contexto venezolano, se requiere del planteamiento de medidas alternativas, como son las medidas antropométricas, tales como la circunferencia de cuello (CCu) y el índice cintura / /talla (ICT), entre otras, que son económicamente accesibles. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la CCu y el ICT como indicadores pronósticos del espesor del TAE y de factores de riesgo cardiometabólico (FRCM) en niños y adolescentes, mediante un estudio transversal, de 77 niños y adolescentes. Entre los principales hallazgos se tuvieron: el ICT fue significativo para predecir tanto el espesor del TAE, como la presencia de FRCM, con valores límites, para dicho índice, de 0,53 (p &lt;0,0001) y 0,55 (p&lt; 0,004), respectivamente. La CCu sólo fue predictor significativo del espesor del TAE, con un valor límite de 32,7 cm (p&lt; 0,002). Se concluye que el ICT fue la variable que más se relacionó, tanto con el espesor del TAE, como con la presencia de FRCM, lo que confirma la evidencia de que los trastornos nutricionales por exceso (sobrepeso y obesidad) son factores predisponentes para el aumento de la grasa epicárdica y de la presentación de FRCM. El ICT es una medida sencilla que puede ser utilizada en la valoración de la adiposidad visceral de niños y adolescentes, y detección de FRCM.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[SUMMARY: The thickness of the Epicardial Adipose Tissue is an emerging tool, predictor of cardiometabolic risk, in patients with overweight and obesity, related to infant morbidity and mortality. The current Venezuelan context, it requires the approach of alternative measures, such as anthropometric measures, by example: neck circumference and waist/height ratio, among others, that would be economically accessible. The objective of this research was to evaluate the neck circumference and the W/Hr as prognostic indicators of the thickness of the thickness EAT and of cardiometabolic risk factors, in children and adolescents, through a cross-sectional study, of 77 children and adolescents. Among the main findings were: the W/Hr was significant to predict, both the thickness of the EAT, and the presence of CMRFs, with limit values, for that index, of 0.53 (p &lt;0.0001) and 0.55 (p &lt; 0.004); respectively. While the neck circumference was only a significant predictor of the thickness of the EAT, with a limit value of 32.7 cm (p &lt; 0.002); It is concluded by establishing that the W/Hr was the variable that was most related, both with the thickness of the EAT, and with the presence of CMRFs, which confirms the evidence that excess nutritional disorders (overweight and obesity) are predisposing factors for the increase of epicardial fat; Therefore, W/Hr is a simple measure that can be widely used in the assessment of visceral adiposity in children and adolescents, for diagnose early cardiometabolic disease.]]></p></abstract>
