Se uso un diseño de bloques al azar con 12 tratamientos y cuatro repeticiones. Se encontró correlación entre el peso del fruto total (PFT) vs potasio en el tejido foliar (KH) y/o potasio en la planta completa (KP) para todas las fincas. Se estudiaron las variables número de frutos por planta, tamaño de frutos, rendimiento y contenido de N, P, y K foliar y en la planta completa. Los resultados sugieren que para una máxima producción del melón, el óptimo contenido de N estuvo asociado con 3,75 g.kg-1 para la finca Puerto Rico 2001 (PR-2001). La máxima producción para la finca San Cristóbal 2001 (SC-2001) se encontró entre 5,5 y 6,0 g.kg-1 de KP y entre 2,0 y 2,5 g.kg-1 de KH. Para Puerto Rico 2002 (PR-2002), la máxima producción fue alcanzada con una concentración de KH entre 5,5 y 5,7 g.kg-1 y para Cartagena 2002 (CA-2002), el óptimo contenido de K en el tejido foliar fue 4,0 g.kg-1. En el 2002 L, no fue incluida en el estudio, por presentar comportamiento similar a C. La masa del fruto total también fue incrementado por la dosificación potásica, alcanzándose el máximo rendimiento con K3 (60 kg.ha-1 de K2O). Incrementos en las aplicaciones de K resultó en aumento en el rendimiento donde C y L fueron más efectivos en comparación a ELS.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Four field experiments were carried out with the purpose of studying the interrelation between chemical composition, potassium dose, way of placing fertilizer and yield of melon. Amounts of K applied were 0, 30, 60 y 90 kg.ha-1. Essay was made in Mara municipality belonging to Zulia state which is classified like dry tropical forest, with sandy loam soils, and Typic Haplargids. A randomized complete-block design with 12 treatments and four replicated was used. It was found correlation between total fruit weight (TFW) versus potassium at foliar tissue (PFT) and/or complete plant (KP) for every farm. Variables fruit number per plant, fruits size, yield and foliar N, P and K contents, and on complete plant. Results suggest that for a maximum production of melon, optimum content of N is associated with 3.75 N g.kg-1, for Puerto Rico 2001 (PR-2001) farm. The maximum production for San Cristobal-2001 (SC-2001) farm was found in KP between 5.5 and 6.0 g.kg-1 and between 2.0 and 2.5 g.kg-1 of KH. Estos suelos generalmente tienen baja capacidad de intercambio cati&oacute;nico  y baja retenci&oacute;n de humedad. Ocasionalmente excesivas lluvias o  periodos de sequ&iacute;as pueden causar excesiva lixiviaci&oacute;n de agua y nutrientes  o stress h&iacute;drico resultando en disminuci&oacute;n de la calidad del fruto y del  rendimiento con reducci&oacute;n de la rentabilidad. El manejo del agua y suelo y  el uso eficiente de los fertilizantes son cr&iacute;ticos para mejorar la  productividad de los suelos. Cuando se emplea el uso eficiente de los fertilizantes, su  colocaci&oacute;n juega un papel importante. En investigaciones en otros cultivos  como el tomate <I>Lycopersicum esculentum</I>, la colocaci&oacute;n por debajo de la  planta, aplicado antes de la siembra fue superior a la pr&aacute;ctica tradicional ya  que el rendimiento se increment&oacute; linealmente con esta pr&aacute;ctica (19).</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">La ventaja de aplicar los nutrimentos antes de la siembra,  en un lugar m&aacute;s accesible incluye un uso eficiente de los fertilizantes (12,  15, 19), mejora el control de la concentraci&oacute;n de nutrientes en la soluci&oacute;n  del suelo y la planta (4, 5), contribuye al ahorro de energ&iacute;a y flexibilidad en  la aplicaci&oacute;n de nutrientes (3, 10, 11, 15).</font>      <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Rodr&iacute;guez y Pire (20)  se&ntilde;alaron que para una producci&oacute;n de 28.440  kg de fruto en la zona de Tarabana, estado Lara el mel&oacute;n debe extraer  75 kg de N, 7 kg de P y 64 kg de K por ha. La respuesta de los cultivos al  uso eficiente de los fertilizantes tambi&eacute;n ha sido estudiada en pepino (7) y  tomate (6, 21). En estudios donde se midi&oacute; el impacto de la fertilizaci&oacute;n  con f&oacute;sforo y potasio sobre el rendimiento en alfalfa y otros componentes del  rendimiento, Berg <I>et al.</I> (2) concluyeron que incorporaciones adicionales de  P y K incrementaron el rendimiento, por estar asociada con una mayor  masa foliar.</font>      <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">De Gracia <I>et al.</I> (8)  demostraron la importancia del ajuste de los niveles de fertilizaci&oacute;n nitrogenada  y pot&aacute;sica para promover la  producci&oacute;n de flores y obtener altos  rendimientos en forma temprana en la  estaci&oacute;n de crecimiento. As&iacute; mismo  concluyeron que el K podr&iacute;a convertirs&eacute; en un factor limitante para el llenado de  los frutos en aquellos cultivos con una gran cantidad de flores  establecidas. En estudios del rendimiento en zapallito redondo de tronco en  funci&oacute;n de la relaci&oacute;n nitr&oacute;geno:potasio se  concluy&oacute; que los mayores rendimiento fueron obtenidos para una  relaci&oacute;n 50N: 100K como resultado de un mayor numero de frutos comerciales.  La presente investigaci&oacute;n fue conducida para estudiar el efecto de la dosis  del potasio, colocaci&oacute;n y composici&oacute;n  mineral sobre el rendimiento del mel&oacute;n.</font>     <P ALIGN="justify"><B><font face="Verdana" size="2">Materiales y m&eacute;todos</font></B>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los experimentos se hicieron en tres fincas: Puerto Rico (PR-2001 y  PR-2002, a&ntilde;os 2001 y 2002), San  Crist&oacute;bal (SC-2001) y Cartagena (CA-2002).  Las fincas est&aacute;n ubicadas en el municipio Mara y fueron caracterizados los  suelos taxon&oacute;micamente,  clasific&aacute;n-dose como Typic haplargids, presentando  un horizonte argilico entre 65 y 80 cm de profundidad (17, 23). Las  condiciones clim&aacute;ticas en la zona fueron de 500  mm anuales de precipitaci&oacute;n,  evaporaci&oacute;n media anual 1854 mm y 28,8&#186;C en  el a&ntilde;o 2001 y 618 mm anuales de precipitaci&oacute;n, evaporaci&oacute;n media anual  1662 mm y 27,9&#186;C en el 2002 (16).</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los tratamientos de  colocaci&oacute;n de fertilizante con respecto a la  posici&oacute;n de la planta fueron tres: 1. - Testigo (T) , en el cual se sigui&oacute; la  practica tradicional de la regi&oacute;n de  aplicar el fertilizante al lado y fondo del surco entre unos 12 a 15 d&iacute;as despu&eacute;s  de la siembra. 2.- Banda central (C), en el cual el fertilizante, se coloc&oacute;  para que quedara exactamente debajo de la planta, y 3.- Banda lateral (L), donde el fertilizante qued&oacute; debajo de  la planta y a un lado de ella. Los niveles de  K<SUB>2</SUB>O fueron de 0 (K1), 30 (K2), 60 (K3) y 90 (K4)  kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> en forma de cloruro de potasio. En todos los  tratamientos se aplic&oacute; 45  kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> de nitr&oacute;geno en forma de Urea y 46,7  kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> de P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5  </SUB>en forma de Hidrofos. Los tratamientos se distribuyeron en un  dise&ntilde;o de bloques al azar con 12 tratamientos y cuatro repeticiones. Se  estudiaron las variables numero de frutos por planta, tama&ntilde;o de frutos,  rendimiento y contenido de N, P, y K foliar y en la planta completa.  Para cada experimento y antes de la fertilizaci&oacute;n de las parcelas, se tom&oacute;  una muestra compuesta de suelo, entre 0 y 20 cm de profundidad para su  an&aacute;lisis. Al final del ciclo se tomaron muestras de suelo para cada  parcela experimental.</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Se tom&oacute; una muestra foliar  en el momento de la floraci&oacute;n inicial, considerando un 80% de floraci&oacute;n en  toda la parcela experimental. Se hizo un muestreo de la planta completa en  el momento de la cosecha. La textura del suelo se determin&oacute; por el m&eacute;todo  de Bouyoucos, el P y K por Olsen, la materia org&aacute;nica por combusti&oacute;n y  el pH en agua en una reacci&oacute;n 1:1.25 (14). Para tejido foliar y planta  completa se utilizo espectrofotometr&iacute;a de absorci&oacute;n at&oacute;mica (13).</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los datos recopilados fueron analizados estad&iacute;sticamente por  el paquete estad&iacute;stico Stadistical Anali-sis System (SAS), 1999 (22), se le  aplic&oacute; el an&aacute;lisis de varianza en el  caso de haber significanc&iacute;a entre los tratamientos. Los gr&aacute;ficos de  correlaci&oacute;n se realizaron con el paquete JMP-SAS, versi&oacute;n 4.04 (24).</font>     <P ALIGN="justify"><B><font face="Verdana" size="2">Resultado y discusi&oacute;n</font></B>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los resultados muestraron que  el potasio en el tejido foliar (KH) y en la planta completa (KP) estaban  estrechamente relacionados con el rendimiento  total del mel&oacute;n (kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP>) para la forma de  colocaci&oacute;n y dosificaci&oacute;n pot&aacute;sica (<a href="#c1">cuadro 1</a>).</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Ambos el tejido foliar y la  planta completa fueron &uacute;tiles para predecir la relaci&oacute;n entre el N y K y el  rendimiento. Para la finca Puerto Rico 2001 la producci&oacute;n total de fruto  fue predicha por el N contenido en el tejido foliar cuyas muestras fueron  recolectadas durante el periodo de floraci&oacute;n inicial. La ecuaci&oacute;n de  regresi&oacute;n lineal para producci&oacute;n total y  NH para colocaci&oacute;n del fertilizante fue Y= -11,785 + 16,88 NH. Los  resultados sugieren que para una m&aacute;xima producci&oacute;n de mel&oacute;n, el &oacute;ptimo  contenido de nitr&oacute;geno fue asociado con  3,75 g.kg<SUP>-1</SUP> N en el tejido foliar (<a href="#f1">figura 1</a>). Estos resultados no concordaron con los encontrados por Adam  <I>et al.</I> (1) donde evalu&oacute; la interacci&oacute;n entre N  y K en plantas de pepino donde concluyeron que un incremento en las  cantidades de N y K caus&oacute; un aumento en las deficiencias de Mg y  consecuentemente en perdidas en el rendimiento. Para la finca San  Crist&oacute;bal-2001 la producci&oacute;n total del fruto fue  predicha por el contenido de K en el tejido foliar y planta completa. La  ecuaci&oacute;n de regresi&oacute;n lineal para T  (testigo) fue Y= 48,63 -5,20 KH y para K2 Y= -26,83 + 13,71 KP. Los  resultados sugieren que para una m&aacute;xima producci&oacute;n, el contenido de K oscil&oacute;  entre 5,5 y 6,0 g.kg<SUP>-1</SUP> en la planta y  entre 2,5 y 3,0 g.kg<SUP>-1</SUP> en el tejido  foliar (<a href="#f2">figura 2</a>).</font> <B>     <P  ALIGN="center"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a name="c1"></a>Cuadro 1. La  regresi&oacute;n para PFT vs KH en el tejido  foliar fue significativa para la forma de colocación del fertilizante y la dosis  de potasio. La ecuación de regresión lineal para T fue Y =16,085 + 13,59 KH (<a href="#f3">figura 3</a>). Los resultados sugieren que para una máxima producción el contenido de  potasio oscila entre 5,5 y 5,7 g.kg<SUP>-1</SUP> en el tejido foliar. Para la  finca Cartagena 2002, PFT correlacionó con K en el tejido foliar. La ecuación de  regresión lineal para PFT vs KH fue Y = 146,57 13,57 KH (<a href="#f4">figura 4</a>). Los  resultados sugieren que para una máxima producción de melón, el optim&oacute; contenido de K en el tejido foliar fue 4,0  g.kg<SUP>-1</SUP>. Default (10) afirm&oacute; que el incremento del  rendimiento en el cultivo de mel&oacute;n por  aumento en el nivel de K no se debe a la obtenci&oacute;n de frutos con mayor masa sino  a un mayor numero de frutos cuajados favorecidos por una floraci&oacute;n  femenina m&aacute;s temprana.</font></p>     <p ALIGN="center"><font face="Verdana" size="2"><a name="f2"><img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rfaz/v24n1/a06fig2.jpg" width="429" height="714"></a></font></p>

Total of fresh mass (TFM) estimated of melon fruits testef  to different potassium levels at foliar tissue (FT) at the  fully plant in San Cristobal-2001 farm, for placing treatment, control and (K=2) 30 kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP>  dose.</font> </B>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Correlaci&oacute;n del tejido foliar</font>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">La correlaci&oacute;n entre la masa  del fruto total y la concentraci&oacute;n de N-hoja (NH) fue significativamente  positiva en PR-2001 (<a href="#c2">cuadro 2</a>). En otras palabras, cuando la colocaci&oacute;n del  fertilizante vari&oacute;, la masa del fruto total correlacion&oacute; con NH. Para esa  finca la correlaci&oacute;n con composici&oacute;n nutricional del Nitr&oacute;geno fue  consistente con el peso del fruto. Esto concuerda con Doikova (9) donde  se&ntilde;al&oacute; que el incremento en la aplicaci&oacute;n  de N, aplicado solo o en combinaci&oacute;n con P y K aument&oacute; la masa vegetativa  y el rendimiento, dependiendo del cultivar, tipo de suelo y nivel de  fertilizante aplicado.</font>      <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">En PR-2002 la correlaci&oacute;n  fue significativa para KH y para CA-2002 la correlaci&oacute;n fue significativa  para KH y KP. El nivel de concentraci&oacute;n de K-hoja (KH) y masa total del  fruto fue significativamente influenciada por la dosis de K aplicado al suelo,  independiente de su forma de colocaci&oacute;n, alcanzando el m&aacute;ximo  rendimiento con K3 (60 kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> de  K<SUB>2</SUB>O) y la mayor concentraci&oacute;n de potasio  con K4 (90 kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> de K<SUB>2</SUB>O) (<a href="#c2">cuadro 2</a>). Estos resultados fueron rese&ntilde;ados por Opapo y Razeto (18) en naranjo,  donde encontraron que la aplicaci&oacute;n de potasio como KCL incremento en contenido foliar de 0,11 a 0,15  g.kg<SUP>-1 </SUP>donde no hubo un incremento en el  rendimiento del fruto, pero si en el tama&ntilde;o de este. Para PR (2002) y CA  (2002) la mayor concentraci&oacute;n de potasio se alcanz&oacute; con K3. Mayores  concentraciones de K fueron encontrados en aquellas parcelas que recibieron  las mayores aplicaciones de K. Esto se cumpli&oacute; para las fincas evaluadas  el primer a&ntilde;o pero no para las evaluadas en el segundo a&ntilde;o, ya que la  m&aacute;s alta dosis corresponde a K4 pero para PR-2002 y CA-2002 disminuy&oacute;.  Como era de esperarse, los niveles de KH fueron mayores con altas  aplicaciones de K.</font>     <P ALIGN="justify"><B><font face="Verdana" size="2">Conclusiones</font></B>     <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Este estudio demuestra la importancia del ajuste de los niveles de  fertilizaci&oacute;n pot&aacute;sica adecuado y su  forma de colocaci&oacute;n para promover y obtener altos  rendimientos. Incrementando los niveles de K al  suelo, tambi&eacute;n resultaron en un incremento del rendimiento, alcanzando  valores m&aacute;ximos con K3 (60  kg.ha<SUP>-1</SUP> de K<SUB>2</SUB>O). Las concentraciones de NH y  KH est&aacute;n estrechamente relacionadas con la forma de colocaci&oacute;n y  dosificaci&oacute;n pot&aacute;sica.</font>      <P ALIGN="center"> <font face="Verdana" size="2"> <a name="f3"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/rfaz/v24n1/a06fig3.jpg" width="374" height="333"></a></font>
