Encontramos 496 términos altamente específicos del lenguaje corporativo y variables en el tiempo. Los términos se clasificaron por frecuencia y funcionalidad. La frecuencia de uso del idioma inglés en la empresa estudiada se estimó en más de 90%, por muestreo al azar de reuniones, teleconferencias, presentaciones y correos electrónicos. Se encontraron 461 términos corporativos en inglés y 35 en español. La especificidad funcional mostró 67% de términos de negocios, 18% médico farmacéuticos y 16% generales. Los términos corporativos mostraron un alto nivel de especificidad departamental: Gerencia General 29%; Mercadeo 19%; Médica 18%; Administración y Finanzas 8%; Tecnología 7%; Recursos Humanos 2%. Se observó una alta simplificación y brevedad lingüística en el lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer ya que 44% de los términos fueron acrónimos en inglés. El análisis retrospectivo evidenció una alta tasa de recambio de la terminología corporativa, cuando se comparó con una investigación previa. El análisis prospectivo permitió verificar, in situ, la incorporación constante de nuevos términos al lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer Venezuela.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The main goal of this research was to analyze the peculiarities of Pfizer Venezuela’s corporate language, by analyzing internal and external oral and written communications, from March 4th to June 15th 2009. We found 496 highly specific and time-dependent corporate terms, from both functional and linguistic points of view, classified by frequency and function. The frequency of use of English as the main language at Pfizer Venezuela’s meetings, teleconferences, presentations and emails was estimated in more than 90%, through a random selection of events. Out of the total, 461 terms were in English, and 35 terms were in Spanish. According to their corporate function, the corporate terms were classified as Business (67%), Medical (18%), and General (16%), since they showed a highly specific departmental usage, as follows: General Management 29%; Marketing 19%; Medical18%; Finance 8%; Technology 7%; Human Resources 2%. A peculiarity of Pfizer’s corporate language is its tendency to shortness and simplicity, as 44% of the terms were acronyms in English. By retrospective analysis we found a high rate of turnover in corporate terminology, when comparing with a previous study. Constant additions of new terms in Pfizer Venezuela were checked in situ by prospective analysis.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="fr"><p><![CDATA[L’objectif principal de cette recherche a été celui d’étudier les particularités du langage corporatif au sein de la multinationale pharmaceutique Pfizer Venezuela, S.A. à l’aide de l’analyse de messages écrits et oraux réunis entre le 4 mars et le 15 juin 2009. 496 termes propres au langage corporatif variant au cours du temps ont été repérés pendant l’étude. Ces termes ont été classés par leur occurrence et leur fonctionnalité. La fréquence d’emploi de l’anglais à l’entreprise étudiée atteint le 90%, d’après un échantillon constitué au hasard de rendez-vous, téléconférences, présentations et courriels. L’on a trouvé 461 termes corporatifs en anglais et 35 en espagnol. D’après la spécificité fonctionnelle, 67% de termes sont liés aux affaires, 18% au domaine médical et pharmaceutique et 16% au domaine général. Les termes corporatifs sont très spécifiques en ce qui concerne les différents départements : gérance générale 29% ; commercialisation 19% ; médical 18% ; finances 8% ; technologie 7% et ressources humaines 2%. L’on a observé une simplification et une brièveté linguistique très marquées à Pfizer, vu que, par exemple, 44% des termes en anglais étaient des acronymes. Une analyse rétrospective a montré un taux de rechange élevé quant à la terminologie corporative par rapport à une recherche précédente. Encontramos 496 termos altamente específicos da linguagem corporativa e diferentes no passar do tempo. Os termos foram classificados por frequência e função. A frequência de uso da língua inglesa na empresa analisada se calculou em mais de 90% graças ao corpus aleatório obtido em reuniões, teleconferências, apresentações e correios eletrônicos. Foram encontrados 461 termos corporativos em inglês e 35 em espanhol. A especificidade funcional mostrou 67% de termos pertencentes ao campo dos negócios, 18% à medicina e farmácia e 16% gerais. Os termos corporativos mostraram um alto nível de especificidade de cada departamento: Gerência Geral 29%; Marketing 19%; Médico 18%; Finanças 8%; Tecnologia 7%; Recursos Humanos 2%. Actualmente está finalizando la Maestría en  Ciencias Fisiológicas de la Facultad de Medicina de la UCV. Ha sido gerente en  diversas empresas e investigador en las áreas de neuroquímica y lipoproteínas  (Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas – IVIC), lipidología,  cultivo celular y neuroendocrinología (UCV). Ha publicado trabajos de  investigación en las Jornadas de Investigación del Instituto de Medicina  Experimental (UCV). Es el idioma específico de la empresa y una parte esencial del comportamiento de las empresas ya que ejerce una influencia significativa en la identidad corporativa (interna y externa) y, por lo tanto, en la imagen corporativa (Gabler Wirtschaftslexikon, 2010). Un operador de la Bolsa de Valores, sea en Wall Street o en la Bolsa de Madrid, entiende que los  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">commodities </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">son materias primas o productos básicos que pueden ser negociados en precios  </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">spot</font></SPAN ><SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">, en futuros, o en opciones en las bolsas de productos. El término  </font> </SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-style:italic; font-weight:normal; color:#272526" ><font size="2">commodities </font></SPAN > <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">se usa en inglés aun por operadores de habla hispana y ese fenómeno se repite con muchos otros términos que son usados en el ámbito interno de las corporaciones transnacionales; tiene como objetivo cifrar la información en un entorno específicamente de negocios. Durante los procesos de fusiones de corporaciones transnacionales, suelen darse períodos de adaptación mutua a los códigos cifrados de comunicación interna. Esa jerga específica que suele conocerse como “lenguaje corporativo” es el objeto de este estudio, en el que se propuso, en una primera etapa de investigación, hacer un inventario de todos esos términos propios de una empresa transnacional —Pfizer, con base en Venezuela— y clasificarlos de acuerdo con sus características lingüísticas y su uso dentro de la empresa.</font></SPAN ></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">El lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer no escapa a las peculiaridades generales del lenguaje usado en otras corporaciones o en las finanzas internacionales, en cuanto a que no es entendible para los profanos. Además, posee estructuras semánticas propias, términos que codifican informaciones en el ámbito específico del negocio farmacéutico de esta empresa. En el caso de Pfizer, esta es la empresa farmacéutica más grande y con mayor inversión en investigación del mundo, con ventas superiores a los 48 mil millones de dólares en 2008 (Pfizer, 2009). Las comunicaciones verbales comprenden la variedad de discursos, mesas redondas, contactos telefónicos y escritos que actúan a nombre de la compañía. La comunicación organizacional es un aspecto efectivo del mercadeo así como de otros elementos utilizados en él, como la publicidad especializada y un despliegue directo ante el consumidor (Jennings y Churchill, 1991). La directiva empresarial es el principal comunicador corporativo en la tarea de evaluar el rendimiento de la inversión. Los resultados de las investigaciones de equipos multilingües que utilizan el inglés como lengua de comunicación muestran que son muchos los obstáculos que encuentran tanto los hablantes de la lengua nativa del país de la MNC como los hablantes de la lengua inglesa.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">En los estudios de la internacionalización de las empresas, el lenguaje ha tendido a ser incluido en cajas de distancia cultural y psíquica. Welch y cols. (2001) intentaron separar el impacto del lenguaje a través de (a) un examen de la manera en que el lenguaje influye en el modelo de expansión del mercado exterior, y (b) un análisis de cómo una empresa puede tratar de lidiar con la diversidad del idioma mediante la adopción de un lenguaje corporativo común. Llegaron a la conclusión de que los intentos de imponer un lenguaje corporativo común pueden obstaculizar o alterar los flujos de información, la transferencia de conocimientos y la comunicación.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Estos resultados son similares a los obtenidos por Andersen y Rasmussen (2004), quines describen el proceso de la comunicación corporativa de empresas que tienen sucursales en el extranjero, en estudios realizados en empresas de Dinamarca con sucursales en Francia, mostrando la problemática que representa el escoger el inglés como medio de comunicación entre la casa matriz y la filial en Francia. A los empleados que usaban el inglés se les hacia difícil ser entendidos por sus colegas franceses debido a su fluidez en el idioma, rapidez al hablar y vocabulario. La decisión de adoptar el inglés como lenguaje de la compañía no eliminó los problemas de comunicación con las filiales.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Margulis y Rattia (1997), por su parte, sugieren que el éxito de una MNC en un país extranjero está supeditado a que los gerentes de la organización aprendan a adaptarse a sociedades con distintas formas de pensar y planificar, con culturas que tienen conceptos de formalidad y cortesía que no son similares a los de la MNC.De acuerdo con Laurent (2006), el empleado o empresario expatriado que trabaja para una MNC por lo general procura reafirmar su propia cultura, aun cuando deba adaptarse a la idiosincrasia de otro país. Esto pudiese ser una fuente de nuevas expresiones para el lenguaje corporativo.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Tietze (2007), investigadora de la Universidad de Bradford, también aborda la problemática del lenguaje comunicacional en la gerencia internacional, para tratar de entender y manejar el comportamiento humano en contextos laborales y sostiene que, mediante el lenguaje, se ha comenzado a explorar la relación entre el mismo lenguaje y las prácticas organizacionales. Afirma que tanto el campo de los negocios internacionales como los estudios de gerencia han experimentado un giro lingüístico. La investigación de Pittaluga (2004) va en la misma dirección: de acuerdo con esta autora, cuando la gerencia tiene que negociar con mercados internacionales, se hace imperativo incorporar expresiones específicas del mercadeo, la tecnología y la informática. OBJETIVO</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo general estudiar las peculiaridades del lenguaje corporativo en una transnacional farmacéutica: Pfizer de Venezuela, S.A. Los objetivos específicos fueron: (1) realizar una recopilación de todos los términos utilizados por todas las categorías de empleados de Pfizer Venezuela,(2) clasificar los términos recopilados de acuerdo con su funcionalidad departamental en Pfizer Venezuela, (3) traducir los términos recopilados del lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer Venezuela y (4) realizar un análisis retrospectivo prospectivo de los términos encontrados en junio de 2009 en comparación con aquellos encontrados en junio de 2004 y noviembre de 2009, respectivamente.</font></SPAN ></p>     ]]></body>

METODOLOGÍA </font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Se realizó un diseño de investigación de campo, en el cual se recolectaron los términos específicos del lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer Venezuela desde el 4 de marzo de 2009 hasta el 15 de junio de 2009. La investigación fue de tipo longitudinal retrospectivo y prospectivo, ya que se compararon los resultados obtenidos en este período con los obtenidos por Corti y Marra en junio de 2004 y con los obtenidos con posterioridad, durante octubre y noviembre de 2009.  </font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Se analizaron unos 200 documentos (entre correos internos, memorandos, notas de prensa y boletines informativos) y se llevó un diario de novedades durante la asistencia a nueve reuniones corporativas. La investigación se realizó con el apoyo logístico de la Asistencia Administrativa de la Gerencia General, donde se monitoreó el uso de los términos corporativos, en inglés o español, utilizados por los empleados dentro de la empresa.  </font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Una vez listados todos los términos corporativos, se usaron cuatro criterios de clasificación y análisis: (1) por tipo de términos: de negocios, farmacéuticos y generales; (2) por tipo de departamento: Gerencia General (G.G.), Gerencia de Mercadeo (G.Mdo./O.C.), Gerencia Médica (G.Mca.), Gerencia Administración y Finanzas (G.A/F.), Gerencia de Tecnología (G.T.) y Gerencia Recursos Humanos (G.RRHH); (3) por acrónimos y expresiones (en inglés y en español) y (4) por orden alfabético.  </font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="color:#272526; font-family:Verdana; font-style:normal; font-weight:bold" ><font size="2">4. RESULTADOS Y DISCUSIÓN </font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">A continuación se presentan los resultados de la investigación. Se encontraron 496 términos específicos del lenguaje corporativo mediante el análisis de la comunicación escrita y oral, interna y externa, de la empresa Pfizer de Venezuela (ver  <a href="#cua1">cuadros 1</a> y <a href="#cua2">2</a> en el Apéndice para una lista de algunos de los términos más relevantes utilizados en el lenguaje corporativo de la empresa, con su correspondiente traducción al español).</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Los términos se clasificaron por frecuencia y funcionalidad. La frecuencia de uso del idioma inglés en la empresa estudiada se estimó en 93% (ver  <a href="#gra2">gráfico 2</a>) con base en el hallazgo de 461 términos corporativos en inglés y 35 en español. La especificidad funcional de los términos del lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer fue la siguiente: 67% de términos de negocios, 18% médico farmacéuticos y 16% generales. Los términos corporativos mostraron un alto nivel de especificidad departamental: Gerencia General 29%; Mercadeo 19%; Médica 18%; Administración y Finanzas 8%; Tecnología 7%; Recursos Humanos 2% (ver  <a href="#gra3">gráfico 3</a>). Asimismo, se observó una tendencia a la simplificación y brevedad lingüística en el lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer ya que 44% de los términos fueron acrónimos en inglés (ver  <a href="#gra4">gráfico 4</a>).</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="center"> <a name="gra2"> <img border="0" src="/img/fbpe/nu/v22n27/art03gra2.gif" width="446" height="442"></a></p>

Si bien el objetivo de aquella investigación no fue específicamente la recopilación de términos corporativos, se usó como referencia, tomando como inventario los términos usados en ese trabajo de investigación como una muestra de los —seguramente— muchos más términos corporativos usados en Pfizer para ese año. Esta data se tomó como parte de un análisis longitudinal retrospectivo para los efectos de esta investigación.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; Es altamente específico desde el punto de vista funcional, ya que los términos recolectados tenían un uso que se circunscribía a cada uno de los departamentos de la corporación, con predominancia de tres: Gerencia General, Mercadeo y Farmacéutica.</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"><font size="2"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" >El lenguaje corporativo de esta empresa tiende a la simplificación, expresada en acrónimos, la mayoría en inglés. CONCLUSIONES</font></SPAN ></p>     <p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">El lenguaje corporativo Pfizer no escapa a las características de cualquier lengua viva en tanto que es dinámico e incorpora constantemente nuevos términos que van decantándose y depurándose hasta ser finalmente incorporados. Sin embargo, el objetivo de esta investigación fue resaltar lo que es específico de esa forma de utilizar la lengua dentro de una corporación estadounidense localizada enVenezuela,que le es específica en tanto que solo se habla dentro de los linderos físicos y organizativos de la empresa. Es decir, el personal de Pfizer puede reconocer una serie de términos para el uso corporativo y una persona ajena a la empresa no sabría reconocerlos; es como una especie de lenguaje cifrado en el cual no solo hay una proliferación de acrónimos en idioma inglés sino que existe una forma única, propia de Pfizer, de entablar la comunicación dentro de la empresa con objetivos corporativos específicos.</font></SPAN ></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p ALIGN="justify"> <SPAN style="font-family:'Verdana'; font-weight:normal; color:#272526; font-style:normal" ><font size="2">Partiendo de los hallazgos de esta investigación, se podría concluir que las peculiaridades del lenguaje corporativo de Pfizer Venezuela son las siguientes:  </font></SPAN ></p>     <p align="justify"><font SIZE="2" COLOR="#272526" face="Verdana">1) Simplicidad  de las expresiones orales y escritas, quizás debido a la necesidad de ahorrar  tiempo en las comunicaciones y agilizar la dinámica organizacional en pro de la  eficiencia corporativa.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font SIZE="2" COLOR="#272526" face="Verdana">2) Dinamismo,  ya que, al igual que las lenguas vivas, no es estático sino que constantemente  incorpora nuevos términos para denotar nuevas realidades económicas, nuevas  prácticas gerenciales o nuevas estrategias de identificación de objetivos de  mercadeo, finanzas o farmacéuticos.</font></p> <font FACE="Verdana" SIZE="2" COLOR="#272627">     <p align="justify">3) Adaptabilidad, ya que solo sobreviven aquellos términos  que se adaptan a las necesidades del entorno corporativo en un momento dado, y  se da un proceso de selección y eliminación de aquellos términos que dejan de  cumplir una función de utilidad en la corporación.</p>     <p align="justify">4) Utilitarismo, ya que se enfoca en los aspectos prácticos y  concretos del negocio corporativo, con énfasis en la investigación  médico-farmacéutica, la penetración de nuevos mercados, la consolidación de los  existentes y la maximización de la rentabilidad de los accionistas. </p>     <p align="justify">5) Uniformidad, ya que al ser una corporación mundial, se  asegura un lenguaje propio “universal” que pueda ser entendido con rapidez y  precisión dentro de cualquiera de sus filiales. </p>     <p align="justify">6) Codificado, porque los términos poseen una semántica  propia, un código de información que solo es manejable por el personal de la  corporación. </p>     <p align="justify">7) Sectorializado, porque cada departamento tiene sus propios  términos de uso preferente.
