Objetivo: Recoger el conocimiento actual disponible sobre las causas, diagnóstico y tratamiento del bruxismo del sueño en niños para facilitar al odontólogo y/u odontopediatra su identificación y adecuado manejo en la clínica diaria.  Material y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica electrónica de artículos publicados en inglés entre los años 1986 y 2023 sobre bruxismo del sueño en menores de 14 años. Se seleccionaron 36 artículos.  Resultados: La prevalencia del bruxismo del sueño en niños oscila entre el 5 y el 46%. De etiología multifactorial, sus manifestaciones clínicas son tanto intraorales como extraorales. El diagnóstico, en la mayoría de los casos, no resulta fácil y debe realizarse evaluando no solo sus consecuencias sino también los elementos etiológicos implicados. El tratamiento integral requiere de un abordaje temprano y multidisciplinar combinando técnicas psicológicas y odontológicas. La evidencia disponible no avala el uso de férulas de descarga rígidas en niños.  Conclusión: El conocimiento actual sobre el bruxismo del sueño en niños busca centrarse en el diagnóstico temprano y en el tratamiento etiológico, pero todavía es necesario seguir realizando estudios para generar un protocolo estandarizado para el diagnóstico precoz que ayude en la toma de decisiones del clínico y mejore la calidad de vida del paciente a corto, medio y largo plazo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo  Introdução: O bruxismo é uma atividade parafuncional caraterizada pelo ranger ou apertar dos dentes tanto na população infantil como na população adulta.  Objetivo: Recolher o conhecimento disponível mais atual sobre as causas, diagnóstico e tratamento do bruxismo do sono em crianças, para facilitar ao dentista/ odontopediatra a identificação e correta gestão desta condição na prática diária.  Material e método: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica eletrônica de artigos em inglês, publicados entre 1986 e 2023, sobre bruxismo do sono em crianças menores de 14 anos. Foram selecionados 36 artigos.  Resultados: A prevalência do bruxismo do sono, em crianças, varia entre 5 e 46%. Com uma etiologia multifatorial, as suas manifestações clínicas são tanto intraorais como extraorais. Na maioria dos casos o diagnóstico não é fácil e tem de ser realizado avaliando não apenas as consequências, mas também os elementos etiológicos envolvidos. O tratamento integral requer sempre uma abordagem precoce e multidisciplinar combinando técnicas psicológicas e odontológicas. A evidencia disponível não sustenta o uso de goteiras de relaxamento em crianças.  Conclusão: O conhecimento atual do bruxismo do sono em crianças procura ficar centrado no diagnóstico precoce e no tratamento etiológico, mas ainda são necessários estudos para gerar um protocolo padronizado para o diagnóstico precoce que ajude na tomada das decisões clínicas e melhore a qualidade de vida das crianças afetadas a curto, medio e longo prazo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: Sleep bruxism is a parafunctional activity in which clenching and/or grinding of teeth occurs in both the pediatric and adult population.  Objective: To gather the most current knowledge available on the causes, diagnosis and treatment of sleep bruxism in children in order to facilitate the dentist and/or paediatric dentist's identification and appropriate management in daily clinical practice.  Material and methods: An electronic bibliographic search of articles published in English between 1986 and 2023 on sleep bruxism in children under 14 years of age was carried out. Thirty-six articles were selected.  Results: The prevalence of sleep bruxism in children ranges from 5 to 46%. Of multifactorial aetiology, its clinical manifestations are both intraoral and extraoral. Diagnosis in most cases is not easy and must be made by assessing not only its consequences but also the aetiological elements involved. Comprehensive treatment always requires an early and multidisciplinary approach combining psychological and dental techniques. The available evidence does not support the use of rigid splints in children.  Conclusion: Current knowledge on sleep bruxism in children aims to focus on early diagnosis and aetiological treatment, but further studies are still needed to achieve a standardised and protocolised early diagnosis that will help clinicians' decision-making and improve the patient's quality of life in the short, medium and long term.]]></p></abstract>
